The Courthouse burned in SEPTEMBER 1864, fortunately only a few records were lost.

County Clerk has birth & death records 1883-1887.

Circuit Court Clerk Reocrder has marriage records from 1821, divorce & court records from 1872,
land records from 1827,
national records from 1877 & military records from 1918;

Circuit Court Probate Division has probate records from 1860

The CHARITON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY extends a warm welcome for anyone who is interested in Chariton County research to come and visit. The Museum is open from mid-April through mid-October, Tuesday, through, Saturday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. They usually close in October for the season. For other times, please call for an appointment. They have available for research: obituaries, federal census, county atlases, cemetery records, family files, family records, county school and church items, newspaper clippings, town histories, county probate records and much more. If you need a researcher, please contact the society to make arrangements. Presently they charge $10.00 per surname, plus copying, for research. Membership dues are $15.00 per year. A newsletter is printed, quarterly. Dues are to be mailed to the Historical Society, which holds meetings quarterly on the third Sunday of Jan., Apr., Jul. and Oct.
