The Daniel James McCabe Ramsey Family

Research indicates that Daniel James McCabe Ramsey was probably born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  His birthday was December 4, 1850.  Many years of research has finally proven his father to be Richard Ramsey, but as of this date, his mother is unknown.  Daniel and his brother, John William Ramsey, were orphaned by their parent’s deaths possibly of Typhoid probably in Kentucky.  Their grandparents were Daniel Francis and Mary Donaho Ramsey who lived on what was known as the “Ramsey Farm” near Mt Vernon in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  When the two boys lost their parents, they were said to have joined the army during the Civil War as water and drummer boys for food.  Henry Owsley Cable was Guardian of the boys as his wife was Elizabeth Ramsey, sister of Richard, their father.  After the end of the war, our family records indicate Daniel left Kentucky with his family in a wagon train about 1868.  Traveling in the wagon train was William “Billy” Estes and wife Malinda “Lindy”, their children and spouses.  Also traveling was Malinda’s mother, Nancy Pence and members of the Adam’s families.  They arrived in Greene County, Missouri southeast of Springfield around 1868.  Daniel is found first on the 1870 Greene County, Missouri Federal Census living with the Dr. T. J. Watts family as a Farmhand.  November 19, 1871 Daniel married the sister of Dr. Watt’s wife, Mary Jane Hedgpeth.  Mary Jane was the daughter of Wiley and Charlottie Edwards Hedgpeth of Nixa, Christian County, Missouri.  In 1881 Daniel and family are found on the personal tax records in Christian County, Linden Twp., Missouri.  It seems they were poor farmers who tried to clear and clean up rented farms.  They moved around a lot as Daniel never owned any land.  Personal tax records show them moving between Linden, Galloway and Finley townships until 1896.  I have not been able to locate the family again until 1898 when they were living in Schofield, Polk County, Missouri.  I believe at that time Daniel received a small inheritance that he had been pursuing for many years from his parent’s and grandparent’s estates.  I believe that is when he paid off his bills in Missouri and started to Kansas.  Daniel and Mary’s children were D. Ramsey b. November 5, 1872 and died 1874 (I believe to have been little Daniel Jr.); Lenna Ann b. March 10, 1874 Christian Co.; Sally Myrtle Elizabeth b. December 18, 1878 Christian Co.; John Jasper b. January 23, 1881 Christian Co.; Charley Ulman b. September 4, 1882 Greene or Christian Co.; James b. March 2, 1887 Christian Co., died 1888 Christian Co., MO..

Son, John Jasper recorded a diary on their trip to Kansas.  He states that on May 31, 1899, with four teenage children, the family left Missouri just southeast of Springfield near Palace or Rogersville with two covered wagons, four horses and a dog.  June 18, 1899 they arrived in Sumner County, Kansas.  June 20 they moved in with the C. W. Donley family on a farm located about fifteen miles southeast of Wellington.  They later rented a farm one mile east of that location.  They finally settled on a rented farm 3 miles west of Geuda Springs or one and a half miles west of Ashton.  There they lived until Daniel’s death August 1, 1913.  Mary Jane sold their belongings at a farm sale and lived the rest of her days with her children until her death January 26, 1937 in Wellington, KS..

Lenna Ann Ramsey married Charles M. Fogg in Wellington February 28, 1903 where they raised their children Charles, Hattie and Hester and lived until their deaths. Lenna died February 22, 1966 in Wellington.   Sally “Myrtle” married John Wartick, raised her daughter Inez in Wellington and remained a part of the community until her death June 25, 1959 in Wellington. John Jasper married Flora May Hoobler October 25, 1905 in Dallas County, Missouri, brought his new wife to Wellington where they remained and raised their children Jane, Forrest, Bernice and Maynard until about 1918.  They settled in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas for the remainder of their years.  He died February 12, 1971 in Wichita.   Charley “Ulman” married Stella Sharpsteen October 22, 1905 in Sumner Co. where they lived and raised their children George, W. Glenn, Carl, Ernest, Floyd and Lloyd near Geuda Springs.  Ulman died December 16, 1949 in Sumner Co. KS..
