James Russel Hedgpeth

Again the great master has visited our midst and called home the beloved infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hedgpeth.
James Russel Hedgpeth age 1 year, 10 months and 27 days died July 31st 1923. On the night of July 31st, after five days
of the most painful suffering and all that living hands and kind Drs. Wasson, Robertson and Hultz could do as the
clock pointed to the hour of nine, death stealing down, kissed the pale, sweet brown and the little sufferer returned
home. Russel was a child loved by all who knew him. His bright and sunny disposition won for him many friends.
Although the dear mother and father are heartbroken over their loss, but to them it is comforting to known that
although Russel cannot come back to them, they may go to him and their loss is heaven’s gain. Jesus said, “Suffer the
little children to come unto me, for such is the kingdom of heaven. Russel leaves a father and mother with
grandfathers and grandmothers and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. He was laid to rest in
Payne Cemetery, B. F. West conducting the funeral service.
The golden sun is shining upon the loved one’s grave
The one we loved so dearly and tried so hard to save
And when we lost our dear one, we lost our dearest babe
We love you and we miss you and we ever shall
So rest in peace dear Russel, safe in heaven’s tower
The day we shall meet grows nearer every hour
His eyes were like skies of glad summertime
His heart was full of sweetness
His face was home of smiles so sweet
               To us he surely belonged
So God took him away, took our little Russel
And the days are empty and long
Sadly missed by his mother, daddy, grandmother and all

Shrilda (Rains)Henry

IN MEMORY OF SHRILDA HENRY Born July 25th, 1830. Departed this life February 21, 1923 at the age of 92 years, 6 mos., and 26 days. Four living children mourn her death.

We hear the soft wind sighing, Through every bush and tree, Where now her form is lying, Away from love and me. Tears from our eyes are streaming, And sorrow shades our brow, Oh weary was our arting, We have no mother now. We see the pale moon shining, Upon the white head stone, The rosebush around it twining, Is here, like we, alone. And just like we are weeping, Those dewdrops from the boughs, Short time has she been sleeping, We have no mother now. Our hearts are ever lonely, Our life is drear and sad,‘ Twas her dear presence only, That made our spirits glad. From morning until evening. Care rests upon our brow She’s gone from us to Heaven, We have no mother, now.(Christian County Republican, 02 March 1923). Contributed by Bill Goss.

CARD OF THANKS We would thank our friends and neighbors for every generous deed and for all their kind assistance in our hour of need during the illness and death of our dear mother Shrilda Henry. The Selmore W. C. T. U. we wish to thank for the beautiful flowers that was placed on mother’s grave. Her Children(Christian County Republican, 02 March 1923). Contributed by Bill Goss.

Helen (Bishop)Henry

GOD GIVETH AND TAKETH AWAY. One beautiful Sabbath morning July 26, 1903 into the care and home of Mr. and Mrs. George Bishop, God gave little Helen, a darling baby girl. How their hearts thrilled with joy and swelled with pride over the birth of this new born babe. Helen was an affectionate loving child and as she grew to womanhood all along the pathway of life she was a ray of sunlight where e’re she went and was loved and admired by all whom knew her. On February 2, 1923 at 12:30 a.m., after an illness of three days, God in his wisdom and glory seen fit to take her away. She was a bride of but twelve days, having been married January 20, 1923 to Mr. Clarence Henry of Hannibal, Mo., where the couple resided at the time of the death. The remains were returned and laid away in the Highlandville cemetery February 4, 1923. On account of an attack of the “flu” the bereaved husband was unable to accompany the body to its last resting place. Deceased leaved a husband, father, mother, four brothers, five sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn their loss. Words cannot express the deep sorrow we felt upon hearing of her death. Our hearts go out in sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

How we miss our darling Helen, No more on earth to roam; One sweet thought again we’ll meet her, On the Resurrection morn, She was converted when eleven years old and united with the 1st Central Baptist church. Oh! The joys of that morning, when our loved ones we meet; With songs of the Saints, we each other shall greet. News Articles: After waiving formal arraignment, Francis Henry, Highlandville service station operator faced preliminary trial before magistrate Herbert Taylor at Ozark Thursday morning and was bound over to the May term of Christian County circuit court on second degree murder charges in connection with the death of Ward “Cotton” Hedgpeth of Nixa. Hedgpeth’s death occurred the night of February 20, at Henry’s service station, a short distance east of the 65-160 junctions in Highlandville. A coroner’s request last week determined that Hedgpeth “died as a result of felony committed by the hand of one Francis Henry” Hedgpeth died a few minutes after being struck in the left chest by a blast from a 12-gauge shotgun. The incident occurred inside the service station in Highlandville. After hearing the testimony of witnesses at the preliminary Thursday morning, Magistrate Taylor reduced the charges from first degree murder and bound the defendant over to circuit court. Bond was placed at $10,000 which was provided. The defendant was originally charged with manslaughter by Prosecuting Attorney Sam Appleby, but later evidence prompted Appleby to file a first degree murder charge. Witnesses heard at the Thursday preliminary included Oren Eugene Ball and Charles Edward Blevins, Hedgpeth’s companions on the night of the shooting., Sheriff Clay Hodges of Christian County and Dr, David F. Gorelick, Springfield pathologist for the prosecution; Ozark City Marshal Buff Lanb, Sheriff Glen Hendrix of Green County and Prosecutor Appleby for the defense. Murder Trial Nears End at Marshfield. Henry Testifies in Own Defense. The jury is expected to begin deliberation this afternoon at Marshfield in the second degree murder trial of Francis Henry, 60-year-old Highlandville cafe and service station operation, charged with the slaying last February 29 of Ward “Cotton” Hedgpeth, 28, of Nixa. Henry is charged with killing Hedgpeth with a 12-guage shotgun in the Highlandville restaurant. He testified Wednesday afternoon in his own defense, and stated that the killing was accidental – that Hedgpeth has been causing trouble, cursing and fighting, just before the shooting, and that he (Henry) walked out from behind the counter with the gun with the intention of hitting Hedgpeth, not shooting him. Henry then testified that Owen Ball began grappling with him, and the gun was discharged, killing Hedgpeth almost instantly. Other defense witnesses who have testified include persons who were in the cafe at the time of the shooting. The trial began Tuesday morning in Webster County Circuit Court at Marshfield, where it was transferred on change of venue. The prosecution rested its case Wednesday morning, after introducing several witnesses.            City Marshal L. E. “Buff” Lamb of Ozark testified he was the first officer to reach the scene after the shooting and that Henry admitted killing Hedgpeth. He also testified that Henry had earlier threatened to kill Hedgpeth. Sheriff Clay Hodges of Christian County also testified that Henry admitted killing Hedgpeth. Charles Blevins of Nixa, Hedgpeth’s companion at the time of the shooting, testified that Henry said that he shot Hedgpeth and said after the killing that he meant to kill him. A transcript of Owen Ball’s testimony at the preliminary hearing was that Henry admitted to the killing and said he intended to kill him.      Thursday morning is expected to be spent hearing rebuttal witnesses, and the case will go to the jury following arguments by counsel for the prosecution and defense.

Hedgpeth, Daniel Franklin, Dr.

 4 Dec 1862 - 16 Jul 1938 CCR 21 Jul 1938 p1

[Note: Son of Ervin Immanuel & Lorena "Laura" Jane (Farmer) Hedgpeth; married 8 Apr 1898 CCM Bertha L. DeBrunner 29 Aug 1874 - 24 Sep 1966]

Dr. D.F. Hedgpeth, prominent retired physician and banker of Christian county, passed away at his home in Ozark early Saturday morning, July 16, after a lingering illness. The following obituary and eulogy was read by Chas. F. Boyd at the services held Sunday afternoon at the Chaffin Funeral Home. Daniel Franklin Hedgpeth, the son of Emanuel and Laurana J. Hedgpeth, was born one mile north of Sparta, Missouri, December 4, 1862. His father died when he was only ten years old. He attended common school at Bethlehem Church near Sparta, Arno in Douglas county, MO, Henderson in Webster county and the Marionville college. He taught school for five years in Christian and Greene counties. In 1885, he entered the Missouri Medical College in St. Louis, and graduated in 1888. After his graduation he returned to Sparta and started his practice, which extended over several counties in Southwest Missouri. In 1890 he took a post graduate course in New York. In 1892 he went abroad with his brother, Doctor John Hedgpeth, and did further post graduate work in England and Germany. The untimely death of his brother, Dr. John Hedgpeth, on February 9, 1893, soon after their return from the trip to Europe, had a tremendous effect on all the future life of the deceased. The two brothers had been closely associated and the loss was hard for him to bear. Again in 1896, Doctor Hedgpeth entered medical studies in the Chicago Medical College. He was married to Bertha L. DeBrunner in April 1898. To this union one son was born, John Fredrick. Dr. Hedgpeth was elected County Clerk of Christian County, Missouri, in the November election of 1902, which office he held for a term of four years. After his election as County Clerk he moved to Ozark, MO, where he continued to live until his death. He served as Christian County Health Officer for fourteen years. In 1908 he became cashier of the Ozark Savings Bank, a position he held until he became ill on July 24, 1935. The reading of the above statement of the life of Doctor Hedgpeth suggests to me, and I am certain it does to everyone, that a very busy life has ended. An orphan, because of the death of his father, he was compelled to make his own way in life, along with his brother, whose name was suggested in the brief statement of his life, and whose friendship and love he valued so highly. He made his way through school, not at home as would be possible for most boys today, but by chance catches at a church near home and in many places in other localities. His early education was truly one of struggle and ambition. His success was very apparent. At the early age of twenty-six years, he graduated in medicine and begun his work as a practicing physician in his childhood home town. He did not content himself with being a licensed physician, but continued his educational research in great schools, not only in his native land, but in foreign lands as well. Testimony of people who know gives to Dr. Hedgpeth credit for being not an ordinary practicing physician, but a man of very extraordinary ability in his chose field of endeavor. Unavoidable events in the life of men cause us often to take different courses in life to that originally planned, and that seems to have been the case of Dr. Hedgpeth. The early and tragic death of his beloved brother had a profound influence upon his life and may have changed its course very materially. Dr. Hedgpeth was a friend to man. In the truest sense he made himself a friend that could be appreciated. As a teacher he spent five earnest years instructing young people in the ways of right and wrong living. As a doctor he was conscientious, honest and proficient, and many of the older people will recall that he and his skill were greatly in demand and greatly needed. As County Health Officer, his opportunity to help those unable to help themselves was great and one he had appreciated greatly, I can speak from personal knowledge of his work in this field. Many times he has put himself out physically, when not able to do so, to help some poor person not able to help themselves. In his work as a banker few men in this community will think of Dr. Hedgpeth as anything but a good friend. His opportunities there for service were many and he gladly accepted his responsibilities and helped many of his fellow men. Doctor Hedgepeth was a man in whom a friend could repose the greatest confidence and trust. To have such a friend is one of the highest delights; to be a friend is one of the noblest and most difficult undertakings. Friendships depend not upon fancy, imagination or sentiment, but upon character. There is no man so poor that he is not rich if he has a friend; there is no one so rich that he is not poor without a friend. Real friendship is abiding. Like charity, it suffereth long and is kind. Like love it vaunteth not itself but pursues the even tenor of its ways, unafrighted by ill report, loyal in adversity, the solvent of infelicity, the shining jewel of happy days. Friendship has not the iridescent joys of love, though it is closer than is often known to the highest truest love. Its heights are ever serene, its valleys know few clouds. To aspire to friendship one must cultivate a capacity for faithful affection, a beautiful disinterestedness, a clear discernment. Friendship is a gift, but it is also an acquirement. It is like the rope which climbers in the mountains use to bind themselves for safety, and only a coward cuts the rope when a comrade is in danger. From Cicero to Emerson, and long before Cicero, and forever after Emerson, the praises of friendship have been set forth. Even fragments of friendship are precious and to be treasured. But to have a whole, real friend is the greatest of earth’s gifts save one. To be a whole real friend is worthy of high endeavor, for faith, truth, courage and loyalty bring one close to the Kingdom of Heaven. To my mind the little poem by Sam Walter Foss, “Let Me Live in a House by the Side of the Road,” suits this occasion and the life he lived. “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Rev. Corum officiated at the services and burial was in the Ozark Cemetery under the direction of T.B. Chaffin.

[Note: Son of Arthur B. & Edith (McTeer) Hesterlee; married 29 Jul 1935 Louise Seals]

Leonard Hesterlee, 19, son of Arthur Hesterlee, county assessor, died Wednesday morning at Sparta at 6 o’clock from a shotgun wound, self-inflicted, about 10 o’clock the evening before. Bereaved relatives are at a loss to understand the boy’s act, and although he had periods of consciousness between the time he shot himself and his death, he made no statement. He had been in Springfield Tuesday and that evening hired a taxi, driven by Thetis Wise, to bring him home. Jack Smith of Ozark accompanied them. When they arrived at the boy’s home, he told Wise and Smith he was going to go into the house for a minute. When they heard the shot they rushed into the house and found the lad mortally wounded. They rushed him to his father’s home at Sparta, where he died the following morning. Hesterlee leaves his widow, Mrs. Louise Seals Hesterlee, and a 10 month old son, Keith. Also surviving are a brother, Glenn, who lives on an adjoining tract, and a sister, Kathleen. The assessor had recently given his sons farms, and a new house on Leonard’s place had just been completed. “If he had trouble of any kind, I can’t find out what it was,” Arthur Hesterlee said. Funeral services were held in the Sparta Baptist church at 2 p.m. Thursday, followed by burial in the Sparta cemetery.
