Mary Isabel Miller was born in Green county, Ind., April 20, 1860, and moved to Missouri with her grandparents by train. At that time the end of the railroad towards Springfield was at Rolla. She lived with her grandparents until their death after which she made her home with an uncle until her marriage to Francis Marion McHaffie on Feb. 12, 1878. Four boys were born to this union, Charles A. McHaffie, Oliver N. McHaffie, James D. McHaffie and Marion A. McHaffie, all of whom are living and were present during her last illness. Besides her four sons, she leaves nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, several other near relatives and a host of friends. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 49 years and became a member of the Christian church and lived a consistent Christian life until her death. She was loved by all who knew her. She had been in poor health for the past few years and her passing was not unexpected. She bore her afflictions with much patience and was a cheerful and loving mother as well as a good neighbor. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 5, at the Temple Hill church at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Williamson officiating at the services. Interment was made in the McHaffie cemetery under the direction of the B.C. Klepper Funeral Home of Ozark. The above sketch of Aunt Mary Huffman’s life, as she was most generally called, was handed the writer by her sons. He having boarded in their home almost a half century ago, and on account of the splendid courteous treatment he received at the hands of not only Aunt Mary but the entire family, owes them at least this feeble tribute and thinks as he remembers her work in the home such as knitting, sewing, putting up winter supplies and otherwise caring for her people that her kind of women are the answer to Solomon’s question when he asked “Who can find a virtuous woman?” Then he tells us the answer, among other things, “She provideth raiment for her family and riseth while it is yet dark to give meet to her household.” Aunt Mary welcomed visitors but made no elaborate preparations for the more fortunate but I hardly recall a day when some poor person was not fed from her table or housed for the night if they cared to stay. Truly I am sure the day’s work is well done and a good woman has gone to rest.—A friend.

Several months ago he began to fail rapidly, being able to be at his place of business only part of the time. About ten days ago he became worse, both physically and mentally, and succumbed to death early Sunday morning, Aug. 1. Mr. Hunter came to Ozark at the time the railroad was just coming into town. He camped at a point near where the railroad trestle passes over Highway 15 between Ozark and Nixa. His experience in the mercantile life of Ozark was varied. For almost 25 years he was associated with the Vaughan Grocery & Market as a meat cutter. He later associated himself in a partnership business with the firm known as Hunter & Garrison and later as Hunter & Webb. His entire life with the exception of a short time in Springfield and about two years in the west was spent in Ozark. About seven years ago, after the death of his wife, he returned to Ozark and associated with his son-in-law, Chas. Roper, in the grocery and baking business. Later he entered the independent business of new and second-hand furniture and was thus engaged when taken by death. Although in falling health for several months, his hurried death was the result of hardening of the arteries and pneumonia.
