A few observations on the
Land Patent Records of Christian County,
Missouri:
For the past couple of
months, I have worked on the Land Patent records
of Christian County from
the Bureau of Land Management’s General Land
Office website. I truly
appreciate the ability to print out copies of
the patent records and to
search in a variety of ways to locate
records.
I especially appreciate the
records re-appearing after their long
absence and the improved
“printer-friendly features”. But, after a
while, the inability to
have the persons’ name, the size of the
property, the date the deed
was final and the location of the land on
the screen at one time got
to me enough to set out to pull this
together
so I could see when land
was granted and which neighbors might have
known each other, that I
decided to put it in a database. Apparently,
they never intended for
anyone to do that - because it was a challenge
in capital letters - but
possible.
There’s still lots of work
to do, but I though someone might like enjoy
some observations.
NUMBER
2,702 records exist for
land now in Christian County. 2,599 are for
individuals. 103 list more
than one land owner.
Several of these are
probably for partnerships. Note that some
"partnerships"
are a man who began a patent, his widow who completed it
and sometimes this widow's
new married name.

SIZE
1) Individual patent
sizes varied from 19.8 acres patented
by Calvin
D.
Bray in Section 14 of 25N 20W on 01 Mar 1860 [one of fifteen land
patents he obtained in
Christian County] MO5680__.379 19.8 to
648.92
acres patented by Ezra
Kinne in Section 3 of 25N 20W Sec 03 on Mar
10
1886 Mar [one of nineteen land patents he obtained in
Christian
County]
2) A total of 216,164.52
acres were patented. Since there’s 564 square
miles or 360,960 acres,
that’s just under 60% of the land in Christian
County.
3) A total of 7,554.93 acres or almost twelve square miles
was
patented
by Ezra Kinne. Apparently,
he never lived in Christian County.
4) Far and away the most
common size of a patent was for forty acres.
1,175 of the 2,702 patents
were for exactly forty acres. Another 516
were for exactly 80 acres;
369 for exactly 160 acres; 141 for exactly
120 acres; 7 for exactly
320 acres; 2 for exactly 240 acres; 6 for
exactly 280 acres; 3 for
exactly 640 acres; 2 for exactly 600 acres;
and
1 each for exactly 400
acres, 480 acres, and 560 acres; and . Nearly
500
were for odd numbers. Some
of these were so close to a standard size,
that you have to wonder if
a cemetery, school, road or church had claim
to part of the land before
the patent was granted. For example Richard
A. Morrow’s 17 Jul 1890
patent in Section two of 27N 19W was a
mere
200
square feet short of a full
quarter section. MO5930__.365 159.995.
Even
if that’s a cemetery,
that’s about a 10’ X 20’ piece of land - room for
maybe 8 - 10 graves if they
are REALLY close? Even today, that land
does
not have a road going to
it, and no cemetery is marked on maps.
