Historical Account
George Washington Lansdown, a physician from Virginia who moved to Central Missouri in 1836, probably built the large two-story log house located at 5240 Tanner Bridge Road about 1840. He moved with his wife, Mary, and brothers-in-law William and Walter Bolton and their wives. Lansdown sold the 360-acre farm to Joseph and Ellen Higgins in 1842. They sold the farm to William Riggins, who continued to farm on the site while also operating a mill in Jefferson City. The farmstead passed from old-stock American to German hands in 1854, when Riggins sold the farm to Simon Kerl, who had immigrated with his parents from Germany to the Osage City area in 1838, when young Simon was about 7. Kerl died in the house on Tanner Bridge Road. Simon Kerl's widow, Katherina Maria Sommerer, remained on the farm after her husband's death and eventually married his half brother, Markus. He who took over the farm in 1879 and it was auctioned at the courthouse steps. It was purchased by Katherina Maria's father, Matthias Sommerer, who divided it between his two sons, Matthias Jr. and John Adam...(This is an abstract from an article written by Gary Kremer, a profesor of history at William Woods University in Fulton, MO, titled "Sommerer farmstead stayed in same family for 142 years" page 2B, September 15 1999. It was taken from the News Tribune, Jefferson City. Please e-mail me if you would like a more detailed version.) Other names mentioned: Edward Bates, Anna Ziegler, Fred Sommerer, Emma Celeste Kaufmann, Harold Sommerer.

RLDS Branch
On September 12, 1999, the local branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Chrust of Latter Day Saints celebrated its 75th anniversary. According to an article in the Jefferson City News Tribune, "Sixteen pastors have led the Jefferson City branch in the past 75 years: August Wintermeyer, Ross Mortimer, Joseph Brown, John Puckett, John Guinnee, Rudy Grechus, Merrill Sindt, Robert Hayes, Duane Wheatley, Warren Conway, Frank Lloyd, Garland Land, Duane Graham, and current pastor Rob Ryder." The branch was organized in 1924 by Wintermeyer. He served as a pastor for 23 years, according to the News Tribune. Meetings had been held in members' homes until 1930. Then the Jewish Synagogue was rented until a church was purchased at 1400 Monroe St. in 1934. It was sold in 1943 and services were held in the City Hall Building, then the Labor Temple Building. Lots were purchased in 1957 on Southwest Blvd. Construction began in 1963. The first service in that church building was held December 6, 1964. Mortimer was the pastor at that time. The church was sold in December 1980 and three acres of land at 1620 Vieth Dr. was purchased. Members met at a local hospital until the first service on December 13, 1981, with Land as the pastor. This information was taken from the News Tribune, Jefferson City.
