Cole County, Missouri was named, in 1820, in honor of Capt. Stephen Cole, who erected Cole's Fort where the town of Boonville now stands, during the War of 1812, as a protection against the British Indians or allies. The county seat is Jefferson City, which is also the State Capitol of Missouri. More History . . .

I live in Union County, Illinois and my interest in Cole County is through my ggggg-grandfather Christopher Casey who died in Cole County in 1840. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and Cole County Coroner. He came to Cole County in the 1820's with his son Hardin and daughter Cassandra Casey Gordon wife of John Churchill Gordon. Christopher Casey is buried in Jefferson City, Missouri.

My link to Cole County is through my ggg-grandparents Anton and Maria Goser who came to Cole County from Wuertemburg, Germany in 1855. My gg-grandparents William James and Martha Jane McCollough Smith lived in Cole County in the 1890's where their son William Oscar Smith married Anton and Maria Goser's granddaughter Amelia Goser (daughter of Paul and Margaretha Hoelrich Goser). My grandfather Robert Antone Smith, Sr. was born in Osage City in 1897.
