Mrs. Enloe Succumbs After Lengthy Illness---
Mrs. Dorothy Marie Enloe, widow of
Dr. Newton Thomas Enloe, died late last
night at the hospital her husband founded here January 11, 1937. Death
came after an extended illness. Dr. Enloe died December 21, 1954 at the
age of 82. Mrs. Enloe through most of her life was prominent in community
activities here. She was born November 15, 1895 in Palermo to Ida Adell
and Joseph E. Schram. On her graduation from Orville High School, Mrs.
Enloe attended the University of California at Berkley, graduating in
1916. This year she celebrated the 40th anniversary of her graduation from
the university. She then began her teaching career at the Alexander High
School in Oakland and later taught at Chico High School, when it was
located on First Street at the Central school site. On February 8, 1922,
she and Dr. Enloe were married. To them were born two sons, Dr. Thomas S.
Enloe of Chico and the late N.T. Enloe, Jr. and two daughters, Mrs. Nancy
Adell Hodges of Washington D.C., and Miss Ida Marie Enloe of Chico. Mrs.
Enloe was prominent in numerous community activities and was president of
the Soroptimist Club, the American Legion Auxillary and Past Presidents
Club, the Chico Art Club, the American College Club and the Butte-Glenn
Medical Auxilary. In addition, she belonged to the Annie K. Bidwell
Parlor, Native Daughters of the Golden Commerce, was president of the
Board of Education, past guardian of Jobe Daughters, organizer and past
Secretary of the Northern California Hospital Conference, was patronese
for many years of the Delta Sigma, belonged to the Chico Business and
Professional Women's Club, the Library Board, the American Cancer Society,
Beulah Rebekah Lodge No. 60 of Chico, the Butte County Historical Society,
the Amateur Iris Growers, the American Association of University Women,
was past president of the Butte County Federation, and belonged in the
Bidwell Council of Camp Fire Girls, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Chico
Auxillary No. 218, and was also a member of the Bidwell Memorial
Presbyterian Church. In addition to her three children, Mrs. Enloe is
survived by seven grandchildren, Christian Anne, Gayle Lin, Thomas Schram,
Jr., and John Michael Enloe, children of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas S. Enloe;
Newton Thomas Enloe III and Mrs Arrill Darby, son and daughter of the late
Newton Thomas Enloe, Jr. and Pam Hodges, daughter of Nancy Adell Hodges.
Great grandchildren are Sharrie Elizabeth and Celia Patricia Darby and
Timothy, Thomas and Terry Enloe. Funeral arrangements are being completed
by the Bruise Funeral Home and the time of services will be announced
later. Friends may send flowers of contribute to the Dr. N.T. Enloe
Memorial Fund in c/o John Robinson of Dayton Road.
