I'm looking for information about the WAGENER (WEGNER) family in St. Louis in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Adelheid Wagener b. 26 Jule 1821 in Germany and d. 14 Sep 1886 in St. Louis. She was married to Gerhard SENDFELD. In 1915 John WEGNER was the baptismal sponsor for one of my uncles and in 1919 Bernard WEGNER was sponsor for another uncle. I'm thinking that John and Bernard were nephews of Adelheid. Any help in clarifying this puzzle is very much appreciated.

J Maurath 17 Dec 1997
I'm looking for a top-notch, professional Civil War researcher for a very difficult case. Denis MAURATH, was born in 1840 and was the son of Felix MAURATH from Baden, Germany and Josephine JACOB from Lorraine, France. Felix and Josephine lived in the Frenchtown area (now known as the Soulard Market area), which was a volatile area during the Civil War in St.Louis. Frenchtown was staunchly divided between the Germans, who were pro-Union, and the French, who were pro-Confederate. Denis first joined the Union Army for three months in 1861, joining under his own name. But then, for some reason (he was supposedly offered more money by the Rebs) he joined the Confederacy, and most probably under an alias name. We do not know if he joined-up in St.Louis or where. He was shot and killed by a bushwacker (right between the eyes, as family legend goes), and again, we don't know where. The family supposedly received written notice from the government of his death. In 1864 the family moved out of St.Louis, away from the hostilities to a farm near Millstadt, Illinois. I would like to find out which alias Denis used to join the Confederacy, and when and where he was killed. Any professional researchers out there willing to take this on? Please contact me.

John Louis Maurath 27 Nov 1997
Felix MAURATH was born in the Black Forest village of Unzhurst (old German for "our forest")in the state of Baden in 1815. He first came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1833 when he was 18 years old, and worked as a "riverman" on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. He came to St. Louis in 1842 and bought a home right behind St.Vincent dePaul's Catholic Church, located at 9th and Park. That part of Soulard was then known as "Frenchtown". Between 1842 and 1845, he married Josephine JACOB, who was born in Lorraine, France in 1825, and who came to America at the age of 17 in 1842. They had 12 children, descendants of whom still live in the St.Louis area. Josephine's mother, Johanna SCHULER (or SCHUELER and sometimes SCHULDER) lived with the family. She was born in Lorraine in 1790. Felix later became a "drayman", supposedly some time after the fire along the river in 1849. He either had, or worked for a ferry business on the Mississippi. Their oldest son Denis was killed during the Civil War, and their oldest daughter Cecelia, supposedly died at 3 during the 1849 St.Louis cholera epidemic. Since the Frenchtown area was staunchly divided between the North and the South during the Civil War, and because of the intensity of hostilities there, it is believed the family was forced out of the area, and they moved across the river to Millstadt, St.Clair County, Illinois in 1864 for the safety of their young children still living at home. They had a 200 acre farm, located southwest of present-day Eckert Orchards. Felix died there in 1897 and Josephine in 1907. Several of their children came back to St. Louis around the turn of the century, and their descendants have been in St.Louis ever since. We would like for those descendants with whom we have lost touch, to contact us. Please contact John Louis Maurath at conlaeth@juno.com Visit our Maurath Family Home Page at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/a/u/John-L-Maurath/index.html

Searching for any information on William SEWING, born in Prussia November 1836, came to St. Louis as a child. Married first wife ??? BUSCH (said to be connected to the brewery family) probably before 1865. She died of small-pox. They had three children Annie, Vinnie, and William. All children had small-pox scars on face. William SEWING married again, to Wilhelmina MITTENDORF (probably about 1869). Wilhelmina and William moved to Pottawattamie Co., IA sometime between 1882 and 1887. It is said the BUSCH family would have nothing to do with William after the second marriage as they felt he married "beneath them". Searching for information on any of the SEWING or BUSCH descendents, especially those that may have stayed in the St. Louis area. Will be happy to share information.

My ggrandmother Sarah Frances GILLIAM and her father George T. GILLIAM, MD. are said to have lived in St. Louis, MO. or East St. Louis, IL. We have them residing in Allegheny County, PA. in the 1850 and 1860 census. After that time it is believed they moved to St. Louis. Sarah Frances GILLIAM was born in 1857 in PA. and we believe she may have studied music while residing in St. Louis, which places her studies in possibly the 1870's or 1880's. Sarah Frances GILLIAM later married William Jasper CUMMINGS of IN. but we do not know where. George T. GILLIAM was said to have practiced medicine in St. Louis, MO. or East St. Louis, IL. and it is said he treated the slaves. Other children of George T. GILLIAM are Robert W., Georgiana, Henrietta, Josephine, Amanda, Eliza and George. Can anyone help me with the GILLIAM'S and does anyone know a researcher in that area? Thank you.

Looking for information on the SCOLLARD family and the McSWEENEY family -- both living on O'Fallon St. in St. Louis at the time of the 1880 census. Michael and Mary SCOLLARD and sons Jeremiah and Thomas and a daughter, Ellen (SCOLLARD) McSWEENEY. Ellen married Miles McSWEENEY and thay had several (5?) children before she died and Miles left town. The kids went to local orphanages or relations. As adults, the kids generally used the name SWEENEY. Michael SCOLLARD died before 1885. Mary SCOLLARD went to the poorhouse and was there in 1900. Thomas disappeared and Jeremiah was a local blacksmith for a while into the 1900s. Among the McSWEENEY children, Edward spent time in the city workhouse. May (Mary Ellen?) married Ed Podgen. Sadie married Charles Miller. Myles kept the name McSWEENEY and moved to Michigan. Nothing is known of Michael McSweeney or of any other children. Any information would be helpful especially immigration dates for the SCOLLARDs and Miles McSWEENEY's parents. What became of Thomas and Jeremiah SCOLLARD or the McSWEENEY boys?.

I am trying to locate a divorce decree and a marriage certificate from St. Louis county. The divorce decree I am trying to locate would have been between Jeremiah Patrick DERMODY and Edna Cora CLAY. The time date would be 1909 - 1911. Jeremiah DERMODY was living in Valley Park, MO at the time and I have reason to believe the divorce decree might have been granted there, even though he and Cora were married in Clay County, IL and his wife (Edna CLAY) was living in Illinois at the time.

I am also trying to locate a marriage certificate between Jeremiah Patrick DERMODY and Ethel McKINNEY, again circa 1909 - 1911. I believe they were married in St. Louis county, in or near Valley Park. Looking for information on the DALTON family. James DALTON married Mary "Nora" BORDEN (or BRESNAHAU) prior to 1850 in Ireland. They emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then moved to Keokuk, Iowa, and finally settled in St. Louis, Missouri. I suspect they settled in St. Louis in the late 1850s or the 1860s. The only known children are George DALTON, born 23 April 1853, and Clara DALTON. They were Catholic. Interesting note: atage 14, George ran away from home and went to Tennessee, never contacting the family again. George is my husband's great-grandfather. Any help is appreciated.

I am researching the surname, HERZIG. My great great grandfather was Geroge Peter Herzig, born about 1810/1813 in Canton Aargau, Switzerland. I need his death date. The last record I have is a St. Louis County Court Record of 1868. I have not found him in the 1870 census. He married Susan Catherine (?????) in Louisiana about 1833/34. (First child, Louis, born 24 Dec. 1834 in Louisiana). Family tradition says he left Susan Catherine after 1850 St. Louis County census and never returned. He became a citizen of the USA on 5 June 1847 (Circuit Court, St. Louis, MO, Volume 17, page 612). I will be glad to share what I have on the HERZIGS and am willing to pay for time and expense for any information concerning George Peter Herzig's death date.

LaCROIX, KNOTT, WIDEN:
Seeking info on family of my ggfather, Anaclet L. LaCROIX, (~1821-1902) b. in IN and lived in St. Louis from (at least) 1860 until he died. He married Virginia KNOTT (1835-1879) ca. 1853-58 and in 1860 lived in the 5th Ward with his wife, their first child Stephanie (later "Fanny") and mother-in-law, Louisa KNOTT, b.~1815-1818 in MO. They had further children: Elise (1865), Lucille (1862), Louis (1870), Anaclet J. (1874) and Wilfrid (1879). Virginia apparently died in or shortly after Wilfrid's birth in 1879. Anaclet was census taker in the second St. Louis enumeration of 1880.

Fanny later married Edmund J. WIDEN b.~1856 and they had at least 8 children, six of whom survived to 1910 (Leon, Elmer, Marie, Eleise, Ralph, Joseph). Elmer, Marie and Elise were born in Iowa, while the others were born in MO. In 1910, Edmund was an architect and they lived at 1103 Channing Avenue. In 1860, Edmund's family also lived in the 5th Ward St. Louis, headed by father Joseph WIDEN, b.~1822, with mother Ellen b~1839, elder daughter Eugenia b.1854 and Edmund. Would appreciate additional info on each family.

Linda(Bangert) Hoaglin 22 Sep 1997
I am trying to find information on my maiden name BANGERT. I believe that my ancestors moved to St Louis from Quincy Illinois in the late 1870's or 1880's. The only information that I have is that John and Louisa SCHNEIDER Bangert were residents of Adams County until sometime after 1860. At some point they moved to St Louis, possibly near the breweries. Louisa Bangert died October 16, 1908 and is buried somewhere in St Louis. The couple had three children. John M. Bangert, Jake (probably Jacob) and an unknown daughter. The unknown daughter apparently married and had a child named Josephine who married a VAHRENHORST in St. Louis.

Jake was killed as a young man in St Louis by a team of runaway brewery horses. I estimate this to be in the 1880's. No other information is known except he is buried in St Louis.

John M. married Mary MEYER or Meyers and their children were May ( who did marry and had a child which died as a baby), Frank Bangert (who was married to Emma ? and had 5 children: Joe, Dorothy, Virginia, and the other two are unknown at this time), Francis (who married a GOUKER and moved to Decatur, IL), and Helen Ella(who is believed to have married twice, once to a Wilkinson, and she had one daughter Lucille DAVENPORT who is buried in St. Louis) and the fifth child died at birth along with the mother, Mary. John M. Bangert then married Mary KELLER, daughter of Johann and Barbara Blum KELLER, in St Louis at St Peter and Paul Church on Feb 4, 1894. They had an additonal ten children, the first being John Henry Bangert who was b. 7-23-1895 in St Louis and was baptized 8-11-1895 at the Holy Trinity Church of St Louis, Mo. If anyone can fill in any of my missing information, I would love to hear from them. Thanks in advance.

I am looking for anyone who is researching these surnames: BECKER, PIEL, STRUNK, VAUGHAN. I would also like to know where I can find a 1870 St. Louis City Map. I am looking for the street Columbus. On a current map it has Columbus north of Belle Fountaine near the Spanish Lake County Park. I was wondering if there could have been another Columbus St. closer to downtown St. Louis. Maybe the name Columbus was changed to another street name. I think that my Becker's were from N. St. Louis. I'm not sure how far N. St. Louis was in 1870. Thanks to anyone who can help.Thank you!

Dr. Colleen Johnson 11 Sep 1997
I am looking for information about my grandfather, believed to be named Bert COOK. We know little about him. We are not sure where he was born, but we know for certain that he was in the St. Louis area in the years immediately prior to and including the year 1918, and that he left St. Louis for New Orleans in either 1918 or 1919. In New Orleans, he married Annie GORDY, fathered two children (including my dad) and then left the children after Annie died in 1924. It is believed that he then returned to St. Louis in the mid 1920's, though this cannot be confirmed at the present time. The only other clue we have about his life is that he might have been some sort of "contractor."

Anthony Casillo 11 Sep 1997
I have been researching St. Louis resident & businessman of the 1880's - 90's
named Godfrey H. LASAR. The son of Henrey S. Lasar, a consul, who was said to be a friend of U.S. Grant, which is how he is said to have become a consul. Godfrey's brother Fredrick was the founder of the Lasar - Letzig Manufacturing Company of St. Louis. But my main subject is Godfrey H. Lasar and the Lasar Typewriter Company of St. Louis around this time period. Lasar Typewriter Co. was only in business for a year or two and managed to manufacture at least one model typewriter. The firm mysteriously disappeared but they were listed in Gould's directory for one year, 1892 (I believe the year to be correct). I have also been told there is a photo of the "Lazar Family" (notice the letter change to lazar) in a publication called "St. Louis Memories" volume III p. 15. I have been unable to procure this book here in New York. Most important to my research is obtaining any photos of the Lasars and possibly of the typewriter company or any typewriter subject matter, if this is even possible. Can you please help? If not, is there somewhere else that I can turn. Please advise. I thank you in advance.

Jim Oke 13 Aug 1997
I am researching a number of Oke families who settled in Canada and the United States during the period 1830-1900. One family settled near Sparta, Ontario about 1857. I have seen a diary by one son of the family, named John Harry Oke, which includes the statement "offered a job by eldest brother, manager of a large furniture factory in St. Louis, Missouri". No date is given but the context would place the time about 1875. John's eldest brother was named Samuel Oke, born in Devon, Eng. about 1843. Can anyone comment on a Samuel Oke who managed a furniture factory in the St. Louis area in the 1870s ? Seeking where abouts of Samuel and/or descendants.

(By the way, John Oke declined his brother's job offer and became a Methodist preacher in rural Ontario for the rest of his life which is another story.)

I am searching for any available information about Israel MILLER(1860- ?) and his wife Bertha (1860- ?) The Millers lived in downtown St Louis--near the Convention Plaza between 1884 or 1886 until at least 1902. He had butcher shop in that neighborhood (Information from the city directories). His name disappeared from the city directory in 1903 (Death? Moved?). In 1912 two of his children appeared in the city directory giving their home as Maplewood. One suspects that the family moved out there as a result of the development of Maplewood in the 1890s. Maplewood Public Library has copies of a Maplewood city directory for the years 1912 and 1915. Does anyone know whether there is a more extensive run of the Maplewood directories and what library might have them?

My mother's family is from St Louis and I believe originally from Hungary and/or Czechislovia. Her maiden name was YANAK. Father Alexander mother Emily KRENN (could be Kren). I know they had cousins in New Jersey. The Yanak name has mystery surrounding it because her father never spoke about his family. Name was probably spelled Janak or Janek originally. He served in the Army and died in a VA hospital of TB. Should be buired in a St Louis national cemetary. I believe he died about 1936. George Krenn was Emily's brother. I know they attended the 1904 World's fair. So I'm guessing they were born in late 1800's or Emily may have been born in 1900. My mother lived on Bamberger street when I was born in Lutheran Hospital. My mother has a sister Mary Margaret who married a Walter Gray. My mother's name was Ann Marie YANAK. My mother and father, Charles L.SUTTON were married in a Lutheran church somewhere in St Louis. Any help you can give is appreciated.

I am seeking any information regarding Jonathan and Wilhelmine Kunze. They arrived in Baltimore via the ship Medora on July 24, 1834 from Hannover, Germany. They were probably members of the Geissener Society. Jonathan was 32, his wife Wilhelmine was 28, and their son Hermann was 4. United Church of Christ records for Femme Osage twnshp has a record of a (possible) son of theirs being born in Augusta St. Charles Co. July 10, 1836. And Marriage certificates (St. Charles Co.) show that Hermann married Luisa Rithorst on July 28, 1853 in the city of St. Charles. I seek any information pertaining to these individuals.

My family "appeared" in Kirkwood Mo. over 100 years ago. My grandfather was Arthur Joseph Anth and had 12 siblings supposedly. He bought property when they arrived, but NO where can anyone tell me where they came from, its as if they never existed before they got here. The ssdi lists only 10 Anths. Most of whom I know about. The listings were in Glencoe, Bridgeton, St. Louis City & County. A couple ladies were in Fla. must have retired there. The family had no info to offer. Either they dont know or wont say. My father never knew his mother she died 3 days after he was born. And amazingly enough he doesnt remember having grandparents. This has been most baffling most of my life. And I would love to find out some info. Thanks.
