An excerpt from the book, "The Union Cause in St. Louis In 1861", by Robt. J. Rombauer, 1909. The Pacific Battalion was among the patriotic organizations of St.Louis County, during the Three-Months' Union Service of 1861.

Company B, Pacific Battalion, United States Reserve Corps
(Also known as the Home Guards)

was formed at Allenton, Mo., being part of the Command of Major Wm. Inks
of Franklin County. The chief service of the Company was to guard the
railroad bridges from June 8th to the 28th at Fox Creek, and after that
date at Glencoe. The Company made two larger scouts into Jefferson
County, infested at the time by notorious bushwacker Sam Hilderbrandt.
The first of these scouts, under Lieutenant-Colonel Holmes, and the
second under Captain Robert C. Allen, were undertaken to secure safety to
Union people, arrest marauding bands, and seize contraband of war. The
organization was mustered out of service by Colonel Chester Harding on
Sept. 18th, 1861, receiving a nominal pay of $10.00, not having been
