        1.  Clayton Morgan7 STOCKTON  (Daniel6, Joseph5, Richard4, Richard3, John2, Owen1) was born 20 Aug 1768 in Princeton, Mercer, NJ, and died 25 Jan 1858 in Greenfield, Dade, MO.  He married Nancy PATTON 20 Jan 1790 in Stokes Co, NC, daughter of Thomas PATTON and Nancy MORGAN.  She was born 22 May 1770 in New Jersey or North Carolina, and died 15 Jan 1855 in Greenfield, Dade, MO.

OCCUPATION:  Farmer, owned 150 acre farm in Wayne Co, KY.

PUBLIC SVC:  Surveyor in Wayne Co, KY in 1811.

RELIGION:  Born a Quaker, but joined the Pigash Baptist Church in Meigs Co, TN about 1830.

1830 US CENSUS:  Rhea Co, TN.   Clayton Stockton age 60-70, wife age 60-70, son 10-15 (Thomas),    son 15-20 (John), son 20-30 (Isaac), dau 10-15 (Sarah).

1840 US CENSUS:  Jackson Twp, Polk Co, MO, Clayton Stockton age 70-80, wife age 70-80.

1850 US CENSUS:  Dade Co, MO.   Clayton Stockton 82, farmer, born NJ, Nancy 80, born NJ.

BURIAL:  Both Clayton and his wife Nancy were buried in the Stockton Cemetery in Dade Co, MO.

FAMILY:  Before coming to Missouri, he crafted two fiddles and their cases in the shape of coffins, plus coffins and headstones for himself and his wife Nancy.  He died at his son John's home in Greenfield.  His grandchildren called him "Toddy Grandpop"

        2.  David D8 STOCKTON (Clayton Morgan7, Daniel6, Joseph5, Richard4, Richard3, John2, Owen1) was born 30 Jul 1807 in Wayne County, KY1, and died 4 Oct 1872 in Halltown, Lawrence, MO.  He married Mary Lavina Polly HALL 28 May 1827 in Rhea County, TN2, daughter of George HALL and Nancy (HALL).  She was born 15 Aug 1805 in Lincoln Co, KY or Europe, and died 16 Apr 1890 in Bolivar, Polk, MO.

 

Notes for David D STOCKTON:

RESIDED:  Came to Greene Co, MO in 1833 with several other Stockton's, all of whom helped organize Polk County in 1835. 

PUBLIC SVC;  Elected and served a two year term as Sheriff of the county 1844-1846.  After being released from the Army due to his injuries, he was elected and served one term in the State Legislature from 1864-1866. 

MILITARY:  Served during 2 wars.

1.  Mexican War:  Two companies were formed, the second, Company K, was organized 12 Jun 1847 under Captain B. F. Smithton, succeeded shortly thereafter by Captain David D. Stockton, who remained its commander until the company was disbanded. They formed a part of Col. Ralls' 3rd Missouri Regiment of the Mounted Volunteer Cavalry.  They marched to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they were stationed for the duration of the war, and were not engaged in any battles of that war. They did have several engagements and skirmishes with hostile Indians, and foraging parties of the enemy. At the battle of Wagon Mound one man was killed and three wounded.  David was mustered out in Oct 1848.

2.  Civil War:  Enlisted as Captain in Union Army for service in Civil War.  Placed in charge of Stockton's Company in the Mounted Missouri Militia, later changed to Company A, 8th Regt., Missouri Militia Cavalry.  Sent to Pittsburg, KS to protect companies being recruited for servcie.  fought in the skirmish at Humansville, MO between 20 Mar and 26 Mar 1862, just a few miles from his home.  Wounded on the 25th by a rifle ball just below the knee, breaking his leg.  First sent home to recover, then to Jefferson City.  Assigned to Provost Marshall duty 24 Dec 1862 but problems with his wound forced him to resign his commission 25 Apr 1862.  He was not officially mustered out of the Army until 25 Jun 1865.

1860 US CENSUS:  Marion Twp, Polk, MO fam 242.   David Stockton 52, wife Mary 55, children Rebecca   19, Joseph C 17, William 15, Charity 13, Mary L 10, Eliza 10.

1870 US CENSUS:  Ozark Twp, Lawrence, MO.   David Stockton, farming, sons William and Joseph, three young children Mary 2, Arsetta 2 and Martha 7 mos; daughter Emily Chaney and her 5 children and a Sarah Cotter 19.

DEATH:  He supposedly died from lingering effects the wound he suffered during the Civil War.

BURIAL:  Wann Family Cemetery, Lawrence County, MO. 

 

Notes for Mary Lavina Polly HALL:

FAMILY:  Emily (Stockton) Chaney told this story about her mother Mary Hall to her granddaughter.  As a young girl, she was kidnapped from her parents in a European Country and brought to America by the Captain of a Dutch Trading Vessel.  When they landed the girl refused to marry her abductor, so he "bound her out" to work for wages in a New England family, collecting her earnings to pay her passage across the Atlantic.  Eventually she earned her freedom from bondage and married David D Stockton. So far as her descendants can remember, she never contacted her own people in Europe, so nothing is known of her origin.  (No explanation is giving on how she got to Tennessee where she met and married David Stockton). 

RESIDED:  Mary was living at Bolivar, Polk, MO on 24 May 1887, having moved there seven years after her husband died.

BURIAL:   Wann Family Cemetery, Lawrence County, MO.  Her tombstone reads 1815 for her date of birth.

        14               i.    Mary Lavina9 STOCKTON, born 16 Dec 1849 in Polk Co, MO; died 4 Apr 1890 in Halfway, Polk, MO.  She married John Hardin HADLOCK 24 Feb 1869 in Lawrence Co, MO3; born 30 Aug 1849 in Woodford Co, IL4; died Abt. 1897 in prob Missouri.

 

Notes for John Hardin HADLOCK:

RESIDED:  Took his family to Oregon by covered wagon in the early 1870's, joining his brother George.  He did not like Oregon, and soon returned to Missouri.  Census records supports this, showing son Nova born in Halfway, MO in 1872, daughter Mary Elizabeth born in Idaho in 1875, and daughter Naomi Belle born in Halfway in 1877. 

DEATH:  Nothing has been found on his death, and neither he nor his wife were buried in any of the Hadlock cemeteries in the area.  Some say he or his wife died from tuberculosis and may have removed to a larger city or sanitarium for treatment.  His wife died in 1890, after which their children were sent to live with relatives rather than staying with the father.

1860 US CENSUS:  Ozark Twp, Lawrence, MO.  Stephen, wife Catherine, son Emsley and daughter Mary, notes that Catharine can not read or write.

1910 US CENSUS:  Lincoln Twp, Lawrence, MO.  Stephen, widowed, living with sister Rebecca P Johnson, age 69, notes Rebecca had 3 children but only 1 still living.

1920 US CENSUS:  Lincoln Twp, Lawrence, MO.  Steven A Stockton living with son-in-law William T. Raydon,  61 and his daughter Mary A. Raydon, 60.

BURIAL:  Both Stephen and his wife Catherine were buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, Lawrence Co, MO.

 

        17             iv.    Elizabeth Jane Stockton, born 16 Jan 1831 in Rhea Co, TN; died 13 Jun 1903 in Pendleton, Umatilla, OR.  She married Henry James Hampton 11 Feb 1845 in Polk Co, MO; born 18 May 1826 in Henry Co, VA; died 27 Apr 1901 in Pendleton, Umatilla, OR.

RESIDED:  Came to Amity, Oregon in 1875 by covered wagon.  Their daughter Martha died will crossing the plains.  Their son Thomas was already in Amity, living with his aunt Emily Chaney.

1860 US CENSUS:  Polk Twp, Dade Co, MO.  James Henry and Elizabeth and 7 children, farming.

1870 US CENSUS:  Polk Twp, Dade Co, MO.  James H and wife Elizabeth, farming, 10 children.

1880 US CENSUS:  Amity, Yamhill, OR.   James, wife Elizabeth, farming.  Children Francis, Stephen, Nancy, Elizabeth, Emma, James and Viola, and granddaughter Martha J Douglas, 5, born Idaho.

BURIAL:  Both Elizabeth and her husband Henry were buried in the Olney Cemetery in Pendleton OR.

 

        18              v.    Nancy Morgan Stockton, born 17 Dec 1832 in Greene County, MO; died 14 Dec 1911 in Independence, Polk, OR7.  She married Newton Putnam 14 Jan 1852 in Bolivar, Polk, MO; born Abt. 1830 in Tennessee; died Jul 1897 in Oregon.

1910  US CENSUS:  South Independence, Polk Co, OR.  Nancy Putman, widow, living in home of son        Winfrey and his family.

MILITARY:   Newton  Putman served in the US Army, Co C, 14th Missouri SM Cavaly.  Filed for an Invalid Pension 28 Nov 1882 in Oregon.  His widow filed application as his widow 17 Jul 1897 in Oregon.

1870 US CENSUS:  Ozark Twp, Lawrence, MO.  Emily, head of household and children only.

1880 US CENSUS:  Amity, Yamhill, OR.  Emily with children Robert, Joseph, Bailey and Charles renting a  house in Amity.  He nephew Thomas Hampton was also living with them.

1910 US CENSUS:  Monmouth, Polk, OR.  Emily (Hagey) living in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, David Hampton and Rebecca J. Chaney Hampton.

BURIAL:  Fir Crest Cemetery, Monmouth, Polk, OR.  Her first husband was buried in Missouri, her second husband Levi Hagey was buried in the Dundee Cemetery, Dundee, Yamhill, OR.

HUSBAND:  Her first husband John Chaney was from the south and a southern sympathizer during the Civil War.  His son Robert can remember his father and uncle hiding out in their corn field during the war.  His mother would sneak food to them at night.  After about a week when his mother took them food, they were gone.  No bodies were ever found.

 

        20            vii.    Martha Sarah Stockton, born 17 Feb 1836 in Polk County, MO; died 10 Mar 1915 in Damascus, Clackamas, OR.  She married (1) John Drennon 18 May 1856 in Polk County, MO; born Abt. 1834.  She married (2) William F Coulter 21 Jun 1874 in prob Polk County, MO; born Abt. 1834.

1910 US CENSUS:  Sheridan, Yamhill, OR.  William and Catharine and son Roy farming.  Roy listing as   Civil Engineer, Surveying and owning his own business.

1920 US CENSUS:  Sheridan, Yamhill, OR.  Catherine, widow, and son Roy (as head of household), farming land he owns.

MILITARY:  Civil War, Union Army.  Served as a Private in Co A, 11th Missouri Cavalry.  He filed an application for an "Invalids Pension" on 9 Dec 1879 in Missouri, refiled the application on  19 Dec 1891 in Oregon.  His widow filed for his pension for her on 3 Dec 1918 in Oregon.

1910 US CENSUS:  Marion, Polk Co, MO.   Henry, wife Charity, farming land they own.  Son Timothy        divorced, daughters Una and Lucy, granddaughter Fay 13 (Timothy's daughter). Son Samuel and wife Anita and family living next door. 

1920 US CENSUS:  Sandy, Clackamas Co, OR.   Charity, widow, boarding with daughters Una and Lucy,  Lucy working as stenographer in Law Office.

1930 US CENSUS:  Salem, Marion Co, OR.   Charity living with daughter Lucy and her husband Roy F.     Campbell and famiuly.  Twila Stockton, 20, listed as boarder.

MILITARY:  Civil War, Union Army. Served in Company F, 15th  Missouri Cavalry.  Discharged with rank of Bugler.   On 5 Dec 1919 his widow Charity Gunn, filed for Civil War Pension for Henry's service while  living in Oregon.

BURIAL:  Both Charity and her husband Henry are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Polk Co, MO.

Notes for William Wann, Jr:

RESIDED:  Settled in Ten Mile Valley that would become part of Meigs County.  They removed to Ozark Twp in Lawrence Co, MO in 1847.  

OCCUPATION:  Commissioner for the Decatur Academy at Meigs.

PUBLIC SVC:   Elected the first sheriff of Meigs County in 1836.  Resigned in 1839 to serve Meigs and Rhea Counties in the State House of Representatives, serving from 1839 to 1845.  Was appointed Justice 8 Nov 1854 by the Governor.

DEATH:  He killed his brother-in-law Jessie McLain, then was caught by a posse the next day and shot and killed by Jesse's son, Isaac McLain, only sixteen at the time.

Notes for Thomas Patton Stockton:

RESIDED:  He was the only son of Clayton who did not settle in Missouri.  He remained in Meigs County until after 1840, and after living in Missouri for a short while, removed to Rusk County, Texas sometime before 1850.   He live in Boone County, Arkansas for a while after the war, then apparently returned to Texas.

TRIAL:  Arrested and arrainged for the murder of Zachariah Harrel in Smith Co, TX on 23 Oct 1855.  He was released on bail put up by Giles Boggess (probably his father-in-law).  He was found not guilty on 2 Jun 1856 and after that returned to McMinn Co, TN.

MILITARY:  Served in the 1st Tennessee Calvary during the Civil War, fighting at Chickamauga and Tunnell Hill, Georgia.  He was part of the retreat from Dalton to Atlanta with Ashby's Bridgade.
