Surnames: HOLMES REGISTER CRAIG FALLIS?
Submitter: Carol Wilkerson (CarolWilk@aol.com )
Date: 05 May 1999
I am researching the surname HOLMES in DeKalb County. I have a
copy of an 1872 letter written by my 3rd G-Grandfather John
HOLMES in which he mentions his brother David HOLMES who had been
living in Missouri. In this same letter, John mentions David's
sons: Paul, Simon and Samuel. Another son to David was living in
Oregon. I have since found land records showing that all four men
purchased land in DeKalb County: David as early as 1838. I would
like to contact anyone who might know of these HOLMES men and
their families. I would mostly like to know David's birth and
death dates, and who his parents were, who his wife was, etc. We
are trying to establish the parentage of the three HOLMES
brothers: John, David and Thomas. John lived in Roane County, TN;
Thomas in Noxubee County, Mississippi, and this David might have
actually lived in Harrison County, MO. But it seems too
coincidental to find the names in the 1872 letter all buying land
in DeKalb county, and then they would not be "our"
HOLMES. John HOLMES daughter, Malinda Holmes BOWMAN lived in
Harrison County, MO and John says in his letter that she would
have the address for David's sons.

Date: 03 Apr 1999
In 1833 or 1834 my ggggrandmother Mary Schallus Judy left her
family and the farm with a neighbor Abraham Burkholder. According
to a book on family genealogies of Somerset Co. PA, they rode on
horseback from Somerset Co. to Maysville, Calope Co. MO. I can't
find Calope Co. but hope that the Maysville reference is correct.
They would have both been in their 40's when they left and that
must have been quite a ride. I don't have much hope of tracking
them but if anyone has information it would be much appreciated
