Museum is Getting a needed facelift!

Your help is needed!

The Holt County Historical Society Methodist Church Museum in Fortescue is getting a new coat of paint!  Board member Dennis Buckles of Quality Restoration and Sealants is repairing and painting the 117 year old historic building.

Funding for the project includes a charitable gift of $3,000 from the Harry and Helena Messick Trust and some personal donations.  Additional donations are still needed for completion.  Please help!  The supplies are being purchased from McIntire Lumber in Mound City.  Just a $30 contribution can buy a gallon of paint!  Donations can be mailed to: Karen Frede, Treasurer, Holt County Historical Society, Box 55, Mound City, MO 64470.

The beautiful old church, built at Craig in 1896, has quite a history!  It served the Methodist Episcopal South congregation until in the late 1940's. In 1952 the brick Fortescue Methodist Church burned. As the Craig building was no longer in use, it was moved in sections to Fortescue. Bathrooms, a furnace and water system, along with a large fellowship hall and kitchen, were added. The Fortescue United Methodist Church merged with the Mound City UMC congregation in 1997 and the building and grounds were given to the Society.

A new roof was added in 2009.  Volunteer Bob Nickols, Oregon, completely updated the electricity.

In 2012 Gene and Betty Poynter, Mound City, repaired the “Jesus Saves” neon cross, and had it returned to the roof of the building. It was originally added to the old church by Betty's brother, J.W. Stone.  Saved from the burning brick structure, it was added the frame building, but time and weather had damaged it.

Memorial donations to the Society in honor of deceased members, Warren Morris, Linda Elton and Kelly Scarbrough have been used to purchase lightweight tables for the Fellowship Hall. The Scarbrough funds also purchased a new storm door for the building. A memorial gift in honor of Thad Daly will be used to purchase paint.

Located at 115 Ada St. in Fortescue, the Museum is filled with artifacts and histories from the entire county. A Sunday afternoon opening is planned when repairs and restoration are complete.
