HOLT COUNTY POOR FARM

@ OREGON, MO

In the spring of 1873 the Holt County Commissioners selected 145 acres owned by Jephtha Martin, near the town of Oregon, for the Holt County Poor Farm. It was chosen for the timber and luscious fruit trees.  Construction of a large two story brick building began right away by Moses Bennet, owner of the Oregon Brick Yard. A part of the building still stands today. Nearby burial grounds contain an unknown number of unmarked graves. On Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 2 pm in the courtroom of the Holt County Courthouse in Oregon the Holt County Historical Society will take a trip back to the beginning of the establishment and recall the many who lived and died there. This is the Annual meeting of the Society and will include the election of 2015 officers. The Society welcomes photographs, histories, and memorabilia to display. Anyone interested is invited to attend this free program.

***Be sure to Check out the “What Do You Remember” column in the  Mound City News each week! Thanks to Publisher Adam Johnson for providing the space for the Holt County Historical Society to recall Holt County memories along with finding answers to queries and to identify historical photographs!
