Did you know???
In March of 1972, a group of interested persons met with the Community
Betterment Association in Mound City, to draft plans for a Holt County
Historical Society. The goal would be to kindle and keep alive the history
of the county and to promote interest with publications, programs, and
observances to discover, collect and preserve articles, artifacts and

throughout the county.
A committee of nine was selected to pursue these goals and organize a
society: Carolyn Gaffney Kent, Billie Jo Reynolds Ripley, Esther Nauman
Field, Edith Chuning Derr, Erma Smith Hinkle, Dorothy Minton Dodson, James
Broker, Bruce Thomas, and Silas Allen.
The first Society officers elected on May 26, 1972, were: President - Erma
Hinkle; Vice- President - Esther Field; Secretary - Edith Derr; Treasurer
- Helen Hatch; 3 year board member - Eloise True; 2 year board member -
Jay Cotton, and 1 year board member Silas Allen. By June 1972, the
organization had grown to 365 members.
