This unusual census was ordered by the Clinton City Council and taken by C. W. Mercer and Theodore Thompson, who completed it on November 5th 1895. They found the number of city residents to be 6045. It is a very simple census, listing only the name, sex and age of each person. Family members generally appear one after the other, but there were no breaks in the writing between households. The listing is in the same order as it was written in the original ledger. The handwriting was very poor and the spelling was even worse. Be sure to check every surname variation you can think of when searching for your ancestors.
