Clinton MO - Mrs. Adelia H. Bradley is no more. She has fulfilled the mission that was allotted her, and using her life's burden for a pillow, she has laid down to that rest from which none are disturbed. She was conscious that her life had been well spent and she had left nothing undone that God had designed and intended for her. She knew the hour for her final departure was nearing and she calmly called her husband to the bedside Monday night about 8 o'clock and said: "Kiss me goodbye. I can't remain with you any longer, I have to give up. Treat the children well." And to the children, she said: "Be good boys, be good to the baby." Then she said: "It is getting darker, darker, Oh for the last breath." Then she fell into that dreamless sleep that kisses down the eyelids and all that was mortal of Mrs. Bradley passed from earth to that glittering sanctuary beyond the dark river of death. Her maiden name was Christian and she was born in Pettis County and was 38. She joined the Christian Church in Leesville in 1867 and was married to John A. Bradley in 1870. She leaves four boys, the youngest being only three weeks old, and a kind and affectionate husband to mourn her loss. After the funeral at the Christian Church Wednesday, March 31, 1886, the remains were consigned to the Englewood Cemetery, followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and relatives.

He was a trustworthy employee; proven many times by the bond of friendship and confidence which existed between these two as long as Mr. Hinton lived. It was while he was employed on this farm that he met Miss Ida May Nelson who made her home with the Deightons who lived on the adjoining (north) farm. Wednesday, March 12, 1980, at the Manor. She had celebrated her 100th birthday February 12, just one month before. Although Ida May Nelson, daughter of Francis and Catherine Nelson, was born in Albert, Kansas in Rush County, she had spent most of her life in Missouri. Her mother passed away when Ida was two years old and she was reared in the home of an uncle, Richard Deighton. Later when they left Kansas and came to Missouri in a covered wagon, they settled in the Shawnee Mound community, north and west of the Shawnee Mound school. She received her elementary education at the Shawnee Mound School. On January 11, 1905, she was united in marriage to C. C. (Crit) Bradley at the William Hinton home in the same community. There were three grandchildren, Dorothy Marie, Robert Allen and Frederick Nelson. The grandchildren have tenderly cared for Ida throughout these years, watching over her needs while she remained in her home at 919 N. 2nd Street. After she became unable to stay in her home alone, she was placed in Westwood Manor, and they continued to keep in touch with her there. They planned and had charge of the open house there on her 100th birthday. The in-laws were as dear to her as the grandchildren. BRADLEY, Laura Ellen JORDAN
b: Oct 27 1846, Howard Co, MO
d: Jan 31 1925, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Springfield Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Laura Ellen Jordan, daughter of William and Elizabeth Jordan, was born in Howard county, Mo., Oct. 27, 1846, passed away Jan. 31st, 1925. This noble family moved to Henry county when she was about 13 years old and her mother died the following year. She often spoke of those times when she was young that she would do the spinning and weaving, as they owned slaves and the burden of keeping house didn't have to fall on her young shoulders so heavily. Those colored people were as dear to her as her own relatives and she spoke many times of home she and her brother would steal way to the kitchen and eat with them. Her father was one of those honest, kind men, and in those days when a troop of soldiers came thru he would always say to cook and give them all they wanted to eat, no matter how many, so they always had the good will of the men. Her mother's name was Elizabeth Drake and she often spoke of visits back to Howard county across the country in the wagon to the old home place. She often told of her father and the older Drakes sending one of the relatives back to England to see about their interest in the Sir Francis Drake estate, as they clamed to be direct descendants of him, but this relative was never seen or heard from again. Jan. 4, 1866, she was married to Barton Stone Bradley, who had just returned from the Civil War, and who has preceded her to the other side just two years and 5 months. Eight children were born to this union, the three oldest dying from that dreadful disease, diphtheria, in less than two months time; also a little sister; then her father sickened and died at the same time, so her troubles were almost too much to bear, as those were the only children at that time. The other five are: Woodie, Tillie, Anna, Creath and Joseph, who were with her to the last. She also leaves four brothers - George of Sedalia; Will of Los Angeles, Calif.; John of Calhoun, and James of Windsor; and four dear grandchildren. A beautiful short service was conducted at the home and then her body was taken to Mt. Olivet. Then she was laid to rest beside her dear husband. She united with the Christian church early in life and remained a faithful Christian until death.

b: Aug 7 1869, St. Clair Co, MO
d: Mar 4 1949, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery BR-BY, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Another page was turned in the Book of Life when death came and closed the eyes and ended the earthly sufferings of L. R. Bradley at his home at 7:26 a. m., Friday. Lewis Richard Bradley, a son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Bradley, was born August 7, 1869, in St. Clair County, Missouri, and entered the great beyond March 4, 1949, making his span of life almost 80 years. His parents moved to a farm east of Quarles and Lewis found work in the Shawnee Mound neighborhood, where he met the girl of his choice, Miss Alice Moore, to whom he was married on November 27, 1901. This union was blessed with three children, all of whom survive: Richard of Colorado Springs, Colo., Finis E. and Mrs. Ralph Helphrey of Clinton. Mr. Bradley was devoted to his family, always performing the little kindnesses that go to make a happy home. He was also a faithful worker for his Lord, having professed Christ as his Savior and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Shawnee Mound in December 1894. He taught a Sunday School class for 26 years, his influence reaching so far that none can measure his accomplishments for the Kingdom of God. He was first a deacon in his church and then an elder, in which capacity he served at the time of his death. Mr. Bradley was one who bore his sufferings cheerfully and through his prolonged illness he kept up his spirit and faith. A short time before his death, a relative expressed a wish for his welfare. Realizing his condition, he replied with the courage so characteristic of him, "As for me, I can only grin and bear it, and I'm to grin just as much as I can". He always had an interest in those about him, both young and old, and though he knew his time here was limited he spoke to his friends about his readiness to go whenever God saw fit to call him. Besides his companion and children he leaves five grandchildren, two brothers, C. C. of Shawnee Mound and Ernest of Creighton, and one sister, Mrs. Vina Clark, also of Shawnee Mound, besides a host of other relatives and friends. His kindly words and smile will be missed by all who knew him. Funeral services for this good man were held Sunday afternoon at the Shawnee Mound Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he had given such happy and cheerful service. The large crowd of sympathizing friends and neighbors attested to his worthy character and the floral offerings were a symbol of the love and esteem accorded him. Burial was in Englewood.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Noel Vance Bradley was born August 23, 1910, at the home on the family farm near Calhoun, to Clyde and Lula Bradley. He graduated from the Roseland Grade School. Noel married Opal Frances Hall on October 8, 1932, in Warrensburg. Along with Opal, he is survived by their four children, Harold of Fallbrook, California, Donnie of Independence, Gary of Overland Park, Kansas, and Melva Slack of Richmond. Noel and Opal were blessed with 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Virgil, of Clinton. As was typical for Midwestern families during Noel's early adulthood, close family ties were developed between the family, friends and neighbors, many of whom lived near Leesville and Roseland. Noel lived all of his life in or near Calhoun and had many close, trusting, lifelong friends. He and Opal bought this farm home a short time after their marriage and have lived there through their entire 62 years of marriage. Close neighbor ties were also developed as folks worked to scratch a living from their farms. Those ties heightened during harvest season when threshing crews moved from farm to farm with teamwork sharing large lunchtime meals, and during hog and beef butchering time in early winter. Noel was typical of many of the farmers being a jack of all trades and skilled as a carpenter and mechanic. Most today will have only a vague notion of what farm life was like during the 30s and 40s. Tools and equipment were primitive by today's standards and required intense physical labor. During winter months when farm labor reduced, Noel supported the family farm income by working in a strip coal mine on the WPA, and as a corn fodder ages ranging from 50 cents to $1 per day. The work ethics and frugal money-spending practices necessary during this period have carried over throughout his life and to some extent have been instilled into his children's lives. Noel's life wasn't just work on the farm. He often spoke fondly of family reunions, picnics, and fishing trips to White Sulfur Springs. Later he was a staunch supporter of his children's baseball and basketball sports endeavors, attending as many games as possible and allowing time out from hay bailing and harvesting for them to participate. Noel's primary vacation each year, and a true joy in his life, was his attendance at the State Fair in Sedalia. He worked at the fair for 26 straight years. As assistant parking superintendent, he managed to find jobs for his sons and neighborhood boys parking cars each year. He served for many years as a planner for the Agricultural Department of the Calhoun Colt Show and won ribbons for his best crops in the competitions each year. Noel also loved raising Angus cattle and would fatten the calves through the winter to sell in the spring. Noel accepted Jesus as his Savior at a young age and was a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church for many years. He served in church offices and enjoyed gospel singing. He especially enjoyed attending and participating in "singspirations" at various community churches. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Clinton. Everyday of his life he practiced and instilled in those around him a sense of honesty and integrity. One of his prime beliefs was, "If you give your word, then keep it." He was always firm in his belief of the way he wanted things done. Funeral services were Friday, June 2, at the Consalus Chapel, Clinton. Burial was in Calhoun Cemetery.

BRAMELL, Addie May STEPHENS
b: Aug 21 1875, Schuyler Co, IL
d: Nov 13 1902, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Stones Chapel Cemetery, Walker Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Missouri, Nov 15 1902 - The spirit of Mrs. D. R. Bramell left the frail body a little after 8 a.m. Thursday. She had been ill a little over two weeks, from a complication of diseases, when pneumonia set in and hastened her death. She leaves a husband and infant daughter, a little over one year old, to mourn her untimely death. Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George Stephens, reside in LaDue and her brothers and sisters are George, Emma, Charles, Sam, Frank and Martha. Her maiden name was Addie Stephens and she had been married between 6 and 7 years. She was a member of the Northern Methodist Church in LaDue and was but 27 at the time of her death. The funeral was conducted from the residence 1 1/2 miles south and 1 mile west of Mt. Carmel and the remains laid to rest at Stones Chapel. - Mrs. Addie May Bramell, nee Stephens, wife of D. R. Bramell, was born in Schuyler county, Illinois August 21, 1875, died of pneumonia November 13, 1902. It seems but a few years since she, now sleeps beneath the sod, was a bright little school girl, doing all she could to make the lives of her associates happier. She had a bright smile and a pleasant word for everyone and in those happy school days at Old Franklin she won the admiration and love of teacher and schoolmates and altho those classmates are now scattered in many parts of the world, there is not one but what will weep for Addie, who has gone to join the school up younder. Addie was a dutiful child, a bright and studious scholar, a pleasant companion, a true friend, an accomplished lady and a noble earnest Christian, who joined the M. E. Church early in life. In 1896, she pledged her love in happy marriage to D. R. Bramell and to gladden their home, two little girls were given. One died when a year old and the other, about a year old now, is the only ray of light left in the now clouded home. A new house had just been completed and everything needed for comfort and worldly pleasure was there, but alas death is no respector of homes or circumstances and claims its victim regardless of broken hearts and buried hopes. Her illness lasted two weeks, during which she was very patient. Physicians Barr and Gibbins of Clinton did all that medical skill could do to restore her to health. She died as she had lived, trying to cheer those around her. To her relatives she talked prettily, saying just before death: "I love my Savior and everybody," and then she sang in a clear, musical voice "Bringing in the Sheaves" and then she closed her eyes in death - there was no struggle; she just went to sleep on earth to awaken in heaven. Burial in Stone's Chapel.

Clinton MO - The community of Glenwood and surrounding territory was shocked early Friday morning when news spread of the sudden death of Roy Bramell. Thursday night Roy went to bed in highest glee, as usual joking with his parents, then went upstairs and had a wrestle with his brother Ernest with whom he always slept. At 12 o'clock Ernest thought he was having a nightmare, when he could not rouse him, he called his father, who, when he also failed to rouse him rushed downstairs with him, but all efforts to revive him were in vain. The angel of death had already called on Roy and took him away. He had suffered with heart trouble since he was a small child. Roy Orlando Bramell, the third child of Russell and Nannie Bramell was born at Deepwater, departed this life December 28, 1933, at the home of his parents, 6 miles west of Deepwater, at the age of 15 years, 9 months and 3 days. He is preceded in death by an infant sister, Mattie Ellen, who died 17 years ago. He was a home loving boy when not helping his father he was by his mother's side. Just the day before his death he was with his father at his work. Although he suffered much, he bore it with a smile. About a year ago he was very ill and had not been as well since. He could not stand things like other boys of his age. He always told his parents he would not live long, but he desired to live to be an old man. He enjoyed being with his playmates and was jolly and agreeable. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and relatives. Although Roy's place at the home fireside is vacant his parents have the consolation that "There's nothing terrible in death; Tis but to cast our robes away and sleep all night without a breath. To break repose till dawn of day." Funeral services were held December 31, at Stones Chapel west of LaDue. Burial was made in the cemetery near Stones Chapel church by the side of his infant sister. He is survived by his grief stricken parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Bramell, four brothers, Wesley, Ernest, Junior and Earl Bramell, all of west of Deepwater. Also two grandmothers, Mrs. W. O. Bramell at Deepwater, Mo., and Mrs. N. E. Whitfield near Appleton City, Mo. And a host of other relatives and friends.

Clinton MO - Thursday, August 22, at 3:30, the sufferings of Henry Bratzler were ended. He died as happy as he lived and as he slept his last sleep, there was a smile on his face radiating to friends that his spirit was unconquered by disease and pain. He now sleeps in Englewood - a happy sleep beneath the grass, trees and flowers he loved. He had been in poor health some months before he or his family realized how sick he was. He was then taken to Kansas City by his sons to specialists and was in the hospital two different times. At the end of the second visit the surgeons told his loved ones that skill had done all possible, just to make him as happy as possible thru the days left. He came home to live those last days among his friends who were numbered among all stations of life. He gave smiles, jest and good fellowship to all, so in turn received it. His home was steadily visited by friends all those last months, where he jested and laughed while pain gripped his life. He was conscious to the last and never gave up, but that he was to live and his and his friends know that he was gone to the Eternal city, as he practiced the kindness of the Master in his daily life. He was a member of the Lutheran church. He was born December 23, 1864, in Menzingen, Baden, Germany, coming with his parents to Clinton when he was 19 years of age, also his young brother, Alec. His brothers, Herman Schmidt, and Rudolph Bratzler had been in this county for several years. He learned the shoemaker's trade in his youth, which he followed for several years after his arrival here. He was miller at the White Swan mill for about twenty years. He loved flowers and nature and kept his own place exquisitely. He was united in marriage with Miss Lena Schellman, October 29, 1893, who survives him with their two sons, Albert and Gussie, both of Clinton. One child died in infancy. He also leaves two brothers, Rudolph and Alec Bratzler and half brother, Herman Schmidt. Henry Bratzler's friends called him "Dutch". He like his home and politics. He took an active part in all elections, being a strong partisan, knowing all the leaders of the Democratic party so he could call them by their first name. He visited the big political conventions and had a front seat. He was often at Jefferson City, getting on the inside of things. He served Clinton as councilman, giving h is personal attention to the committee work of the council. Christmas time was his special delight and well do the children remember him at that time as he was always there to help at the treat the Elks give each year. His funeral was conducted at the Baptist church last Saturday morning.

Clinton MO - Mrs. Henry Bratzler, whose life thread had gradually grown weaker the past two weeks, reached the end of her life's journey at 8:30 Sunday morning. She had been confined to her bed practically helpless the last three years, at the home of her younger son, Gus Bratzler, on West Franklin street. Mrs. Bratzler had been given every care and consideration that her devoted sons could supply and the love and attention of her daughter-in-laws also blessed her failing days. Lena Schellman, the daughter of native born German parents, was born August 12, 1858 in the suburbs of Chicago. As a small child she came to Prairie City, Mo., with her parents, where she spent her girlhood and attended school. As a young woman she came to Clinton, seeking employment and for ten or fifteen years was the efficient and expert housekeeper at the home of the late Judge McBeth on South Second street. There by thrift and good management she accumulated some property and October 29, 1893 she and Henry Bratzler were united in marriage at Prairie City, at the home of her parents. Mr. Bratzler as a boy of 17 years had come to Clinton, direct from Germany. Homemaking, Mrs. Bratzler's supreme art, was beautifully manifest in the creation of her new home and the rearing of the two sons, Albert and Gus, that completed their family circle. She was a quiet, retiring type of woman, who lived for her family, especially her boys. She was devoted to the Lutheran Church which was the denomination of her childhood's belief, and to which she was ever loyal, attending when there were services in Clinton or when she was able. She became a widow August 22, 1929, when the late Henry Bratzler died and since that time made her home with her son, Gus, whose love brightened her days and where her older son, Albert, faithfully and regularly visited his mother. She was also very much endeared to a small circle of friends which were always sufficient for her happiness and diversion. Other than her two sons, Mrs. Bratzler is survived by two sisters, Misses Mary and Lizzie Schellman, of Omaha, Neb., and one brother, John Schellman, of Kansas City, Mo. The funeral services were held at the Gus Bratzler home, 314 West Franklin street on Tuesday. The body was taken to Englewood to rest beside her husband. Consalus and Peck in charge.

Clinton MO - Death of Business Man - Rudolph Bratzler Had Conducted Shoe Repair Shop in Clinton For Over 45 Years - Clinton has lost one of its best business men in the death of Rudolph Bratzler, a man of high honor, who gave the best he had to those about him every day of his life. He was devoted to his wife and his love of beauty, thrift and order made his home on the corner of Jefferson and Fourth streets most attractive. Although 70 years old and a business man here for nearly 46 years, he was young of spirit and was in accord with every progressive step. Death came at about 1:30 p.m. April 6, 1938, at the Clinton General hospital, where he had undergone an emergency operation the evening before for a congestion of the intestinal tract. It was also found the appendix had ruptured. He had not been well for some time but worked until Monday evening when he went to the Elks Club, then home and early Tuesday morning began to suffer. When the pain became intense, he called his physician, who called the brother, Alex Bratzler, and later after an examination, advised an operation. Mr. Bratzler refused to be operated on until his wife, who had an eye operation in Kansas City hospital, was able to be present. She was at a sister's, Mrs. Lena Mullens', and her niece, Mrs. Edna Johnston, of Clinton, went after her Tuesday afternoon, bringing back Mrs. Mullens, also. Their only son, Frank Bratzler, at Rifle, Colo. was notified of his father's serious condition, and started immediately, calling them from Denver Wednesday morning that he expected to reach Kansas City Thursday (today). He was unable to leave by plane because of a storm, it being just four degrees above zero. Rudolph Bratzler was born January 20, 1868, in Germany, and in the spring of 1883, when he was 14 years old, came to the United States, and on to Henry County, where an uncle, Fred Schmidt, and half-brother, Herman Schmidt, lived. He was followed by his parents and their family the next year, and lived with them on their farm, southeast of Clinton until they came here in 1892. Mr. Bratzler worked for the neighboring farmers for another year, then joined his father and brother Alex, who had started their shoe shop on East Jefferson street. About two years later the two brothers moved their shop to its present location, across the railroad tracks on East Jefferson, where through the years they have given expert service, always with a smile. Mr. Bratzler was versatile, striving always to accommodate his customers, though it would mean inventing other means than the ordinary, but with a keen mind and clever hands, he and his brother have always achieved their desired result. Mr. Bratzler was married to Miss Mecie Gaupp, May 26, 1892 and to them was born one son, Frank, who, with his mother, survives, also one grandson, Billy. There is also one brother, Alex, and half-brother, Herman Schmidt, near Clinton. Deceased was a member of the Elks and W.O.W. lodges. He belonged to the German Evangelical church in Germany in which faith he was taught until coming to the United States, and faithfully attended the First M.E. church in Clinton, where he worshipped with his wife. Funeral services, pending the arrival of the son, will be under direction of Consalus & Peck.

Clinton MO - In memory of a sweet and innocent baby, who left only memories pure, tender and sweet. Little Kathryn Lee Braun was born December 29, 1921, being the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Braun. Three short years were her life's span and her whole brief history can be summed up in the word - love. She was the loving little thing - demanding love and giving it, without stint. She was sweet, obedient and very appreciative, loving beauty and craving tenderness. Even strangers felt her charm. A heart like hers would have been broken many times in an ordinary span of life, but she has been spared all these disappointments and disillusionments, and has been allowed to step into the land of everlasting love. Wee Kathryn Lee was a lovely little rosebud just ready to open to its fullest beauty in paradise. Everything that finite minds could conceive or human hands execute was done to cure, but to no avail - she was not of this prosaic old earth with its sorrows and sufferings, she belonged to the land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign, and her spirit took its flight to that habitation Tuesday evening at 8:30 p.m. Five weeks before she had had an attack of diphtheria and she had apparently recovered until about ten days before her death, when her nose started to bleed and altho every possible remedy was used, the hemorrhages came at intervals until all vitality was sapped from the little body. She leaves her beloved parents, a sister Mildred, age 8; a brother Eugene past four. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Mitchell and grandmother Mrs. Braun of near New Harmony, besides other sorrowing relatives and friends. The funeral was conducted Thursday at the family home, three miles north of Clinton on the Munsen farm. Interment in Englewood.
