BROCK, Ema Katherine SHADWELL
b: Mar 12 1915, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
d: Dec 19 1994, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery BR-BY, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Ema Katherine Shadwell was born March 12, 1915, in Clinton, the daughter of Wray Tillman and Hattie Brecher Shadwell. She died Monday, December 19, 1994, at the Westwood Nursing Center, Clinton. Katherine spent many fond years as a child raised in a loving home. Her fondest memories were of her grandparents who owned the telephone company in Brownington around 1920. As a child she visited with them during the summers and played with their tamed wolves and helped run the switchboard. She recalled, it was fun because the local people always knew when she was on the switchboard. They often teased and made phony complaints to keep her busy. In school she was most popular in her home economics class and graduated from the Clinton High School. She was united in marriage to Barkley Brock, a local attorney with Poague and Poague in 1941. They were blessed with three children. Barkley preceded her in death in 1978. As a young woman and homemaker, Katherine prided herself in helping with community affairs. She actively participated in the Parent Teachers Association, the local Chapter For the Handicapped, Gray Ladies, the Henry County Historical Society, the Cemetery Board, Unit 14 of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She loved to tole paint and won a blue ribbon at the County Fair in 1980 and her friends cherished her paintings she often gave as gifts. Katherine was a member of the First Christian Church of Clinton, the American Association of Retired Persons and a Silver citizen. She was an active board member for the Heart of America Walking Horse Association for many years and the local county saddle club. Both she and Barkley and the Poagues' shared quite an interest in the county rides and shows. Many of their summers were spent riding their matching spotted walkers, Sun's Midnight Son and Setting Sun's Lady. They were often teasingly referred to as Mr. Gunsmoke and Kitty. She is survived by two sons Baird Brock, Warrensburg, and Craig Brock, Clinton; one daughter, Kristine Brock, Clinton; one brother, Franklin Wray Shadwell, Jefferson City; two grandsons, David and Christopher Brock and one granddaughter, Hattie Pasley, Clinton. BRONAUGH, Adalaide E. "Addie" DAVIS
b: 1845, Maryland
d: Nov 24 1908, near Calhoun, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Death of Mrs. C. C. Bronaugh - Addie E. Davis was born in Maryland, in 1845; departed this life Tuesday morning, November 24 1908, at her home near Calhoun, MO., the fatal malady being internal cancer. In 1889 she was united in marriage to C. C. Bronaugh. Their wedlock was without issue, but of constant devotion, one to the other. Mrs. Bronaugh about three years ago became afflicted with a cancerous growth, and was taken to St. Louis for treatment. But the ravages of disease were only stayed, not conquered. Unto the end medical skill, a husband's constant care, the ministrations of loving relatives and friends, could only alleviate her sufferings. And on Tuesday morning her life of loving service closed. Wednesday funeral services were held at the Baptist church. Her best eulogy being the very large crowd assembled to witness the last sad rites. The somber casket was garlanded with beautiful floral tributes. At the conclusion of the services many sought a last look at the pallid features of the departed loved one, ere she was borne to her last earthly home in Calhoun cemetery. Deceased is survived by her husband, an elder sister, Mrs. H. K. Davis, Mt. Sterling, Ill., and three brothers - Hon. W. H. Davis near Windsor, J. Richard Davis, Kansas City, Chas. W. Davis, near Calhoun. The brothers were present at the funeral obsequies. Our acquaintance with the deceased dates back nearly forty years, when we entered upon the printer's trade in the office of her brother, the Hon. W. H. Davis, at Clinton. The family then comprised an invalid father, herself and three brothers. Her girlhood days were days of household cares, loving and cheerfully performed. Not one, but countless tears to her memory.

BRONAUGH, Columbus Columbus "Lum"
b: Mar 13 1841, near Buffalo, WV
d: Jul 20 1924, Calhoun, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Columbus C. Bronaugh was born March 13, 1841, near Buffalo, West Virginia. Came to Missouri at age (obit cut...) what is now known as the Hargrave place, later moving to the old Bronough place. Mr. Bronaugh continued to live on the old homestead until about the year 1910, moving to Springdale, Arkansas where he lived four years. Coming back to Missouri he lived the few remaining years of his life in his modest little home in Calhoun where he died July 27th, 1924, age 83 years, 4 months and 14 days. Mr. Bronaugh was one of the followers of Gen. Robt. E. Lee and gave himself unstintingly to the cause of the South. At the close of the war he accepted defeat like the man that he was and had proven himself to be, and came back home to take up again his life on the farm. Was married in Oct. 1889 to Miss Addie Davis who has preceeded him some 15 years to that home which hath foundation - whose builder and maker is God. To this union there was no children. Joining the Baptist church in early manhood, he lived a faithful Christian life - translating his belief in his Lord into deeds of service and love and helpfulness to his fellowmen. Of the large family born in his father's house, only one brother survives him - David Bronaugh of this city. Such is the biography we find written of the life of Columbus C. Bronaugh. Dr. Luke's characterization of his friend Barnabas "He was a good man" might well be applied to him. So in grateful remembrance of his many good qualities, we write upon his tombstone, this simple but sufficient epitaph - "He was a good man." The funeral was held in the Baptist church of Calhoun Sunday afternoon.

BRONAUGH, David H.
b: Oct 24 1843, near Buffalo, WV
d: Jun 27 1926, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Another pioneer passes in the death of David H. Bronaugh last Sunday, another respected pioneer of this vicinity has passed away. David H., son of Thomas H. and Nancy H. Bronaugh, was born near Buffalo, West Virginia, October 24 1843. He came to Missouri at the age of two years with his parents who settled on what is now the Hargrave farm, later moving to the old Bronaugh homestead, two miles north of Calhoun. He was the fourth son and fifth child of a family of five sons and two daughters, all of whom have preceded him to the Better Land. Because of delicate health, many years of his life were spent in California. During the years 1910 and 1914 he lived with his brother, C. C. Bronaugh in Springdale, Arkansas. Coming back to Missouri, he spent the remaining years of his life here, where he died June 27th, at the age of 82 years, eight months and three days. In early life he became a Christian uniting with the Baptist church, of which he was a faithful member to the last. His faith was unwavering, his character above reproach, his spirit humble and the end was a fitting climax to his quiet, unostentatious life. No sickness or disease caused his death. Failing strength compelled him to spend much of the last few weeks in bed. He was just tired. Without pain, with out a struggle, amid the loving ministrations of a nephew and wife, he fell asleep in the quiet hours of the Sabbath morning as the church bells were summoning the worshipers to the study of God's word. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church and interment was in Calhoun cemetery, Monday afternoon.

Clinton MO - Frank Bronaugh, gentleman of the old school and last of a proud and dignified Henry County family, that for many years held an important place in town and country life, laid down his burden of years and altered fortunes at 3:00 a.m. Monday, passing quietly to Life More Abundant. Frank Bronaugh, son of the late C. C. Bronaugh who came to Missouri in 1837 from West Virginia, and his wife, Anna E. Waters Bronaugh, was born November 23, 1850 on the Bronaugh farm eight miles northeast of Clinton, that in those days was one of the pretentious country homes of the county, hospitable and large, friendly and inviting known as Bronaugh Place. He was christened Francis William and spent all his life with the exception of a few years on the old homestead where he was born. He traveled some but always returned to Bronaugh Place, and for four years had the whole care of his beloved mother who was helpless from a fall. He was the soul of honor, a man of fine feeling and nicety of judgment, a lover of good horses and in his youth was quite a beau in Clinton, where he had many warm friends. He lived a short time in Johnson County and while in Knob Noster joined the Methodist Episcopal church, South, under the preaching of Rev. Nat Golbert in 1872. After coming back to Henry County he and his brother, W. C. Bronaugh, were instrumental in building Bronaugh church near their home. He and his brother always paid half the preachers salaries and entertained them while in the neighborhood. J. F. Robb, King, Hogan, Flummer, Appleby, Strong, Hunter, Pew, Shackelford, Alexander and Wolfe were some of their outstanding preachers. They always had preaching services twice a month and it was a great distress to Mr. Frank when after the World War the church had to be closed as the neighborhood was then so thinly settled. Being deeply religious Mr. Bronaugh moved his membership to the Franklin Street Methodist church in Clinton, and his church was ever his bulwark and shield. The large family of eleven brothers and sisters is now entirely gone. Six nephews, "The Bronaugh Brothers" of St. Louis, one niece, Mrs. Daisy, also of St. Louis, and some great nephews and nieces alone remain. Being ill, he came to Clinton in 1934 and for some months had rooms at the old Dr. Salmon house on North Main street, now owned by J. S. Arnold. He was nursed by Ted Hunt and given faithful and constant attention by his nephew, Warren Bronaugh, who was never far from his bedside. After several months Mr. Hunt moved Mr. Bronaugh to his home on East Franklin street, where he has since been, gradually growing weaker, spending most of the days in bed, and at times suffering greatly with bronchitis. Until a few weeks ago, however, he was able to go to the Franklin Street Methodist church, where he ad his membership. Driven there in the car by Mr. Hunt he would meet his nephew and together they attended services. Mrs. J. P. Daisy of St. Louis, niece of Mr. Bronaugh, arrived in Clinton Tuesday morning to complete arrangements for the funeral, which was Wednesday morning at the Wilkinson Funeral Home.

He was married to Miss Leona Knox, Dec., 25 1860 and settled in Calhoun. To this union were born seven children, two dying in infancy. the wife died August 26 1890. On April 2 1896 he was married to Mrs. M. V. Davis, who faithfully ministered to him in his months of illness. In early manhood he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Presbyterian church of Calhoun. He was elected rulling elder in 1886 in which capacity he served faithfully until his death. He loved the church and its services were his delight. His seat was always filled unless Providentially hindered, when he would say to us, "Don't forget that this is prayer meeting might, be there on time." At the family altar he ever remembered the church and pastor. For almost fifty years he was a practicing physician, competent, conscientious and faithful. He considered his calling a sacred trust from God, and I have often heard him speak of asking Divine guidance as he went among his patients. While he ministered to the wants of the body, he was ever ready to minister to the needs of the soul; and who can estimate the good accomplished by this Christian family physician. He passed to his reward on the evening of Jan. 14, 1920 surrounded by his wife and children in the home he had hallowed by his faithful Christian life.

bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Johnnie F. Bronaugh, youngest child of Dr. J. W. and Georgia Bronaugh, was born May 11, 1873, and departed this life Dec. 12 1885, aged 12 years, 7 months and 1 day. Johnnie was a bright little boy, loved by all who knew him. He had been afflicted for about a year with consumption, but during his entire affliction was never heard to murmur or complain. Everything that could be done by loving parents and kind friends for his recovery was done; but all was in vain. God had use for little Johnnie in the other world, so He said to him; It is enough; come up higher. Just the day before his death he called his Pa and Ma to his bedside and talked freely to them about his condition. He said he would like to get well and live with them, if it was God's will; but said God knew best, and would take care of him. He said he was ready and willing to die, if it was God's will. He then spoke of an elder brother who was not religious, asking them to talk to him and tell him to meet him in heaven. Afterward his brother came in, when Johnnie called him to his bedside, telling him to be a good boy and meet him in heaven. He spoke to his Ma about a brother and sister who had gone on before. He said he was going to meet them, and asked her if she thought they would know him. He then made a division of his toys, and some property which he had, giving something to each one of the family, also to some relatives and friends. Thus passed away in the morning of life one that we all loved. On Sunday morning, Dec. 13th, his remains were taken to Calhoun, after which a long procession followed the remains to the family burying ground where they were laid to rest till God shall bid him rise. Johnnie leaves a father, mother, three brothers and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Sorrow not, dear friends to mourn his loss. Sorrow not, dear friends, as those who have no hope; but remember that while another chair around the fireside is vacant, that one more seat in heaven is filled. Remember that you have one more tie in the glory land than ever before. Then look forward to the time when you shall see dear little Johnnie again; not a lifeless corpse, but with that body which suffered so much on earth changed and fashioned like the son of God. Brother and sister Bronaugh wish to extend to the good people of Shawnee Mound and vicinity their heartfelt thanks for the continued kindness shown to them and little Johnnie during his entire sickness.

BROOKS, LaVeer
b: abt 1930
d: 1945

Clinton Eye, Clinton MO, Oct 25 1945 - LaVeer Brooks, 15 years of age, high school youth and son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brooks, east of Brownington and his uncle, Rollo J. Myers, a minister of North Kansas City were drowned in Grand River not far from the Brooks home Saturday morning when the boat in which they were riding capsized. Mrs. Myers, wife of the minister and Kathryn Brooks, sister of LaVeer, miraculously escaped drowning by sheer grit and courage and the timely advent of Charley Nichols, who effected the rescue. Mrs. Myers is a sister of Mrs. Brooks and these relatives thoroughly enjoyed the outing and visit at this ideal season of the year. Fishing and boating appealed particularly to the younger members of the group. The four had launched forth in a boat which was too small for the weight of the motor it carried, causing it to capsize, throwing the men who were in the rear far out in the water. The women came up beneath the boat and were able to grasp it. The aged father of Mesdames Brooks and Myers had accompanied the quartet to the river, where he was digging bait when the fatal accident occurred. Realizing he could be of no assistance, he went hurriedly to summon the parents. Mrs. Brooks ran to the highway where Charley Nichols and family were passing en route to Clinton. With extraordinary presence of mind, Nichols secured rope and equipment and rushed to the river, about a mile distant. Meantime, Mr. Brooks had visited the scene and was searching frantically for some means of rescue. The steep, slippery condition of the banks retarded Nichols and his wife in their lifesaving work. With a rope tied about him Nichols, a good swimmer swam out and carefully pulled the boat to shore with the help of Mrs. Nichols and Mr. Brooks, who lost his footing and plunged into the river. The women were all but paralyzed with nearly two hours in the icy water and had to be carried to safety. The bodies of the men were recovered about 2:30 in the afternoon by Kenneth Rufenacht, a neighbor, using a grapple hook. The boots worn by young Brooks were found near his body, indicating the two had removed them in the efforts of Myers to save the boy and himself. Of the party of four, only Mr. Myers could swim. The Brooks family moved to the farm near Brownington two years ago, LaVeer was a typical, happy-hearted farm boy with a zest for play and work and enjoyed fully the wholesome, clean fun to be had in the out-of-doors. He was a student in the Deepwater High School and funeral services were held there Monday in the high school auditorium. Surviving LaVeer is the sister, Kathryn and the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brooks to whom many a heart beat goes out in sympathy in their irreparable loss. Another son preceded in death a few years ago. Mrs. Brooks is the valued correspondent of the Eye in the Hay Creek community where she teaches her children by precept and example the value of Christian living and good citizenship. The body was taken to Ainsworth, Nebraska, for burial. Mr. Myers, a minister from North Kansas City was not well known in the community. Indicative of his character was his well worn Bible, which he had left open in his room, with a designated passage for reading and study. He must have lived near his Master. Funeral services for Mr. Myers and burial were in Kansas City.

He specially enjoyed arrowhead hunting and at one time had a large collection of arrowheads he had found himself. He loved dogs and had a few that were very special in his life, Zach, Slater and Pokey. Jason was a true warrior. Jason also dearly loved his family and friends. He had a way of finding happiness and friendship in most trying of situations and circumstances. One of Jason's friends said that he glowed with an inner light, which was true. Jason had an exceptional and extraordinary spirit. He was one of those special people that other people immediately like and feel drawn to. He was warm and funny and interested in others and made you feel special too, just by being around him. Jason lived through a lot of trials and tribulations in his short life and sometimes it seemed he may have seen his worst enemy (Blink 182), but he had a way of always looking on the bright side and encouraging others to do the same. He was an inspiration and a living example of positive thinking for everyone he knew. Everyone who knew and loved Jason - his family and all of his many friends, will remember him as a kind, loving good-hearted generous person and friend who brought much happiness into their lives. We will miss him terribly and will never, ever forget him. Memorial services were held January 5 at Consalus-Bradley Funeral Home.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Jan 16 2008 - Shirley Ann Stoneking Brown was born December 15, 1941, to Lee Roy Stoneking and Ruby Ruth Akers Stoneking of rural (Henry County) Chilhowee, one of 13 children - including half-brothers and half-sisters. She grew up in a loving, nurturing atmosphere and her family ties were unusually strong. She received her schooling from Norris, Shawnee Mound, briefly at Laramie, Wyoming, and Windsor grade schools, Warrensburg High School and Clinton Vo-Tech. Shirley married and moved to the East Coast at the age of 17, never realizing the heartache that being away from the family she loved so much would cause. She was to spend the next 20 years there, raising a family of three sons. Visits were three to five years apart. Promises to move back to Missouri went unfulfilled and as the emotional scars took their toll, she eventually moved back to Missouri and divorced. She later married Jim Houk Sr. of Clinton and was happily married until his death in January of 1987. After a year and a half of widowhood, she married her current husband Ernest Brown Sr. of Galena, and had made her home there until the present time. Ernest and Shi-Ann (or Shirley) were solidly convinced that the Lord worked a miracle in their lives when He got the two of them together. And what a blessing! They were unbelievably happy throughout their marriage, so devoted to each other. On June 18, 1988, past, present and future families all united to witness Ernest, Shi-Ann and the Lord make a marriage bond together that could be separated only by death. It truly was a marriage made in Heaven. Shirley was blessed with multifaceted natural talent. She played a variety of musical instruments, most notably the piano. She wrote poems, songs and short stories. She h ad had her own cake baking and decorating business and made jewelry for awhile. In later years, inspired by her youngest son Clint, she took up pastels and oils and spent many happy hours standing at her easel, painting landscapes for family and friends. During the time she was making jewelry, she advertised her products as being "From The House of Shi-Ann". The name stuck and almost all her friends knew her by that name. Shirley loved the Lord. She accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 10. Her first membership was with the Corinth Baptist Church at Petersburg. Later, membered at Allen Street Baptist Church in Clinton, then College Lakes Baptist in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and finally at Elsey First Baptist Church near Galena. Shi-Ann and Ernest placed their memberships with Elsey First Baptist in 1994. Shi-Ann loved her church family there. She and Ernest were active members in the church and unless illness or overtime hours prevented, they were there for every service. She often played piano there. She worked behind the scenes, helping with music for the youth or drafting certificates for the little ones. She served as an adult Sunday School teacher. Since her marriage to Ernest, she had encouraged her husband, her children and stepchildren in the Lord and she was able to see all of the adult members of her family and all but the very youngest children come to the Lord and baptized. This blessed her greatly. Shirley was a devoted mom and loved her children with a passion. Her natural sons, Nelson, David and Clint Gill, were her very life for more than 20 years. They were all that kept her going during her darkest hours in a place so far from home. Even after she returned to Missouri, they continued to constitute the biggest part of her life. She and her children remained very close despite the miles between them. Their hearts were never very far apart. When she married Jim Houk, she became stepmother to his three children, Debbie, Cheryl and Jim Jr. It wasn't long before they attached themselves very deeply into her heart, establishing bonds that continued to this day. Likewise, when she married Ernest Brown, his two sons, Berry and Junior (whose mother had deserted them) immediately became her own. The ties were so strong, that some two and half years later when Junior was getting married, he "forgot" to tell his bride-to-be that Shi-Ann was his step-mom and not his real mom. (A situation that created quite a stir for a few minutes.) It as a situation that thrilled the heart of a step-mom, nonetheless. Loving children, stepchildren, grandchildren and step-grandchildren kept her life full of joys; her only desire having been that she might have been able to spend more time with them (especially those faraway). It was so hard to be so faraway. Shirley's mother was a loving woman and she showered her children with love. It rubbed off on the children and the bonds of the children were such that they remained very close after the loss of their parents. The closeness shared with her brothers and sisters was very important to Shirley. (She always claimed, "Half counts whole" where half-blood was concerned). There was always lots of love to go around and sisters and brothers-in-law were often as close as natural kin, as well. Sadly however, the love that meant so much to her also caused her the greatest pain. Due to the tremendously close bonds with her parental family, she spent the first half of her adult life distraught because she was unable to be with them. Yet after she returned to Missouri, she spent the second half of her adult life in separation from her children and their families whom she loved so much - except for biannual visits. It seems no matter where she lived, she lived a life that was torn and that was very difficult for her. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Ruby Ruth Akers Stoneking and Lee Roy Stoneking; half-sisters, Dixie Lee Moretine, Elberta Christine Houk, Leona Mae Thomas and Arvilla Ruth Fitterling; half-brother Ervin E. Stoneking. Shi-Ann is survived by her husband Ernest Brown Sr. of the home in Galena; her three sons, Charles Nelson Gill of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, David Lee Gill of Henderson, North Carolina, and John Clint Gill of Macon, North Carolina; two stepsons, Berry Lynn Brown and Ernest Brown Jr., both of Crane; also stepchildren by the late Jim Houk Sr., Debbie Withrow of Blue Eye, Cheryl Motley of Deepwater and Jim Houk Jr. of Clinton; as well as one brother Carl Elbert Stoneking of Blairstown; two sisters, Mary Jane Milligan of Pleasant Hill and Judy Joy Merlino of San Marcos, Texas; one half-brother Fred Eugene Stoneking of Springfield and one stepsister Mable Fay, Seeley Lake, Montana. Also surviving is her stepmother Thelma Stoneking of Clinton and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends and extended family members too numerous to mention. Funeral services were held at Vansant-Mills Chapel on Wednesday, December 26. Interment was in Salem Cemetery, Blairstown.

He worked for Lindstrom, Bush, and Booth hatcheries. He later had a small hatchery business of his own. Uel Brown was a faithful employee of Sherman Plumbing and Heating Co. for 42 years. A good example of his dedication to his job and customers he served was back a number of years ago. Carl and Hazel Sherman were going to Kansas City early in the morning and at 5:30 a.m. Carl drove past the store and noticed someone inside. He immediately circled the block and entered the store to find Uel "Brownie" there and starting up the coffee pot, but most importantly he had a customer who was out of water and he wanted to repair his water pump and reinstall it as quickly as possible so they would have water service that day. "Brownie" was always faithful and dedicated in his work and to Sherman's. His mind was very alert for a man of 92 years. Carl often took Uel for rides and sometimes out in the country to places he remembered in early days. One day Carl failed to check the fuel gauge in the car and he ran out of gas on Highway 13 north of Clinton. Several times after that the first thing upon entering the car, "Brownie" would ask or lean over and look at the gas gauge and say "How much gas do we have?" One time he suggested that Carl carry a gallon can of gasoline just for emergencies. He was loved by his daughter, relatives and close friends and respected by anyone who knew him. Funeral services were held at the Vansant-Mills Chapel, with burial in the Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.

Clinton Eye, May 2 1891 - Drowning of Henry Brownsberger - About six o'clock Tuesday evening, the little town of Montrose was thrown into blazing excitement at the terrible news of the drowning of Henry Brownsberger, a well-known businessman at that place. About 2:30 in the afternoon, a party of young men, consisting of Jos. Debold, Herman Lennartz, John Kirn, Henry Welling, Ed Bundy and Henry Brownsberger, left Montrose in a spring wagon for Deepwater creek, where they expected to go seining. After about two hours, Mr. Brownsberger remarked to the other boys, "Let us make another across this hole", then started to swim across the stream, holding the seine rope in his hand. He had almost reached the middle when stricken with a cramp. He began to struggle. John Kirn immediately plunged in to rescue the drowning man but, alas! fate baffled his attempt and before he had reached Brownsberger, he felt, to his horror, that his own muscles refused to assist him and narrowly escaped himself, being caught by Ed Bundy. Further efforts were in vain and the body was not recovered until about an hour later. Funeral services were at the Catholic church and every business house in Montrose closed its doors. Mr. Brownsberger was 31 and a man of splendid business qualities and liked by all. He had lived in Montrose 13 years, 11 of which were spent in the employ of Sol Kahn and he has been a partner in the firm of Kahn and Brownsberger for two years. He leaves a wife and aged mother, almost prostrated with grief, and three little children who will call for Papa with but echoes for their reply.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Oct 15 2004 - On October 7, 2004, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Leroy Lawrence Brownsberger began to sing his Ave Maria in Heaven. He is mourned by Dorothy Jean (Duewel) to whom his first words were "I won't let you fall." Through 63 years of marriage, he bore out these words by unwavering fidelity, heartfelt love and intimate devotion. His brother Martin, still living on the farm in Germantown where Leroy was born on September 1, 1917, is witness to Leroy's impeccable honesty and exemplary work ethic. His children, Marsha and Walt, have had in their father a vivid reflection of god's own paternal love for them. Edie, Brenda, John, Bill, Donna and Nick have been profoundly marked by their grandpa's life. By his self-sacrifice, they have been given many opportunities in life. In his example, they have seen how life should be lived. Leroy is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Jon, Nicole, Madeline, Joseph, Noah, Marcello, Mariella and as-yet unnamed Dodson. Having lost his own father at the age of six, Leroy, the youngest of nine children, overcame drought and the Depression to succeed beyond expectation in farming. He considered himself blessed to have spent his life on the land that he owned and loved. All who have known him will miss his twinkling blue eyes and his witty asides. Funeral services were held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Montrose, Monday, October 11. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Montrose.
