BRUBAKER, Bertha
b: Jun 11 1883, near Maxwell, Story Co, IA
d: Jun 7 1899, 2.5 mi W of Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Fields Creek Cemetery, Fields Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Jun 24 1899 - Bertha, only daughter of John C. and Mrs. Edith A. Brubaker, was born near Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, June 11, 1883 and died June 7 at the home of her parents, two and one half miles west of Clinton, of that fatal malady known as consumption. She was 15, a bright, loving child, the pride of her parents. All was done that loving parents, kind neighbors and a skilled physician could do but no one could conquer the terrible enemy called death. No one knows how she suffered, being confined to her bed since last Dec. 19th. Her papa was sitting by her death bed when she whispered, "Papa sing ..." and he sang for her until she passed into eternal rest. Remember, fond parents and loving brothers and sisters, that Bertha cannot come back to you but you can go to her. God never makes mistakes and doeth all things well. She leaves a father, mother and two brothers. Laid to rest in Fields Creek Cemetery.

bur:
Englewood Cemetery BR-BY, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Eye, Dec 1936 - Mrs. H. N. Buchannan Died - At her home at 310 West Wilson Street at 1:40 p.m. December 7, from complications. She had been in failing health for two years and had an attack of pneumonia. She was bedfast only five days previous to her death. Mahala Cruzan was born march 29, 1859, in Indiana, where she grew to young womanhood. April 2, 1881, she gave her heart and hand in marriage to Harvey N. Buchanan. soon afterwards the couple moved to Kansas for a short time, where he followed the carpenter trade, then to Missouri, then to Clinton in 1904, where they lived until death claimed them, the present house their home for the last 26 years. Their family of seven children, three boys and four girls was reared with a firm, guiding hand to point to the right and wrong. They were thoroughly taught the basic principles of Christian life, and although never affiliated with any church, Mrs. Buchanan preferred the Methodist, South, and knew the joy of learning her children's choice of churches as they became mature men and women. Mrs. Buchanan was always busy. A fine housekeeper during her active years, she turned into profit her moments when she could not get about, by piecing quilts, knitting, or doing other needle work. She had a strong character, and an independent spirit. After the death of her husband Easter Sunday, in 1934, she preferred to live alone in her home as long as she was physically able to manage her housework. This fall, however, she said to one of her daughters, "I think that I'll go live with my children for six months," but was more satisfied when Mr. and Mrs. Lester Howard, her daughter and family, came to assist with the house and to lend their strength to her aging years. Mrs. Buchanan came from a strongly constitutioned family. Besides a brother who died in infancy, the death of her sister, Mrs. Lizzie Allis, two years ago October 27, was the first of her brothers and sisters. Her other sister, Mrs. Lucy DeMoss, Kansas City, older than Mrs. Buchanan, and twin brothers, Albert Cruzan, Deepwater, and Al Cruzan, Caplinger Mills in Cedar County, mourn her passing. Death visited her immediate family when in August, 1928, her eldest son died in San Francisco. The six living are: Mesdames Lester Howard and J. C. Cummings, Clinton; Miss Floy Buchanan, Kansas City; Arlie Buchanan, east of Clinton and Lester Buchanan, Stormlake, Iowa. There are 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Daugherty, Fairmount, Mo., only child of the eldest son, Leroy, made her home with her grandparents since childhood, and was like another daughter, lavishing on them her affection and receiving, in turn like love.
