CARDER, Benjamin
b: Sep 28 1842, St. Louis Co, MO
d: Mar 29 1900, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Good Hope Cemetery, Bethlehem Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Mar 1900 - On last Thursday, March 29, Benjamin Carder, old and respected citizen of the Gaines neighborhood, died of pneumonia. Mr. Carder was born in St. Louis county September 30, 1842 and came to Henry County with his parents about 50 years ago. He died at the Carder homestead settled by his father. He united with the Christian Church some 25 years ago and attempted to carry out the principles of his religious conviction without ostentaiton or show in his daily life. He married Margaret Prewett in 1866. They raised a family of five children, two sons and three daughters, all at home but one, Mrs. T. J. Martin, who lives in the neighborhood. As one by one the pioneers of our county are laid away and covered with the clods of the valley, we fell more lonely and the reflection is more vivid and real that 'ere long those of us who first began to subdue the natural conditions here 50 years ago will have passed from the memory of man. Other men will till the soil first brought into subjection by the pioneer's plow.

Clinton MO, 1938 - Death, unannounced, stepped beside J. E. Carleton of Leesville as he returned to his home Sunday, up the little lane about a quarter of a mile from the house and left him there, but the side of the road, lifeless and unprotected from the terrific heat of what remained of the Sabbath Day and Monday. A neighbor, Mr. Bell, going home about 7:30 p.m. Monday, passed that way and to his distress found the body. The coroner, Dr. S. B. James Edgar Carleton, son of James and Isabelle Carleton, was born March 5, 1870, near Leesville, and spent his entire life in that community, farming when he became a man, as had his father before him. He was one of 11 children of his parents, all of whom have been called back into the Great Beyond, except one brother, W. P. Carleton, also of the community, his only survivor. He was united in marriage to Sally Dukes, Dec. 12, 1893. To this union one son, Hugh Alvin, was born to brighten the home, but passed away at the age of 32, leaving his father alone as the wife and mother had died just two years earlier. He was converted when a young man and joined the Methodist church at Leesville, remaining steadfast in that faith until death. d: Apr 18 1935, near Leesville, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Tebo Church Cemetery, Leesville Twp, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO - Mary Helen Miller, daughter of William and Caroline Miller, was born in Calloway county, Mo., November 4, 1858 and died at 12 o'clock noon, April 18, 1935, being 76 years, 5 months and 14 days of age. She was one of a family of seven children. She is survived by the following sisters, Mesdames Will Walker and Betty Junod of near Ft. Lyon and Mrs. Jennie Carleton near Leesville. October 16, 1881, she was united in marriage to John Stranger Carleton of near Leesville. He died February 2, 1932. To this union four sons were born. Surviving are: Curtis and Homer of near her home. She also leaves three grandchildren, Hazel and Bobby Gene Carleton of Leesville and Mrs. Leo Shanks of near Centerview. Since her marriage she spent her entire life northeast of Leesville. When she and her husband were first married they lived just across the road from her husband's brother-in-law Henry Carpenter and wife. Elbert Sell and wife now live on the Carpenter farm, but nothing remains of the Carleton's first home except some large lilac bushes that were set out by her. It was at this place their sons were born. From there they moved to Leesville, where her late husband in partnership with his brother Will, had a general store for eighteen years. While in Leesville they lived in the brick house now owned by Ivan Smith, later moving to the place now owned by Jim Logan. On account of her poor health they sold their store and to be near their son Curtis, bought a farm adjoining his. Here the husband cleared the timber and erected the farm buildings. 'Twas on this farm they both spent their remaining days. Not many years after her marriage she and her husband were both converted during a revival meeting held in the old Leesville school house. The revival was held by Rev. Harney. When the present Methodist church of Leesville was built she and her husband united with it, and remained a member until death. "Aunt Mollie" as she was better known, loved flowers. As long as she was able to care for them her yard and garden were a profusion of blossoms from early spring until late autumn. Her bouquets brightened many a sick room. She enjoyed cooking and preparing sweets for her loved ones and the children. She loved to tell jokes and play pranks in her younger days when health permitted. Her sense of humor remained during her failing years. Hers was always a giving hand to the needy and those less fortunate than she. Her contributions to the poor have been many and varied. Her love for her grandchildren was manifested in everything and she and her husband were always so happy when they were in their home. She had been in poor health for a great many years. Stomach trouble had been her main illness, but she tenderly cared for her husband during his years of declining health and passing. Since his departure she has lived in a part of her house on the farm but always said she was so lonely. Chronic bronchial trouble caused her death, which occurred at the home of her sister, Mrs. Jennie Carleton. She went there two weeks before for a visit. While there she became ill and after one week's illness in bed she died. Everything that loving hands could do was done for her comfort and recovery. She was conscious until the last moments and strength was given her to tell the loved ones standing around her bed that she knew and saw them and she could also see heaven, Jesus, her happy husband, but some faces she couldn't see. She said she was so happy and ready to go for heaven was so beautiful. She then quietly passed into Eternity. Funeral services were conducted Friday at Tebo church. Interment in the Tebo Cemetery beside her husband. On September 15, 1888, he was united in marriage to Susan Jane Miller, who has proven a true companion and helpmate throughout their years together and is now left to mourn his departure. Though the parting is very sad for her, yet she weeps not as one who has no hope, for her husband is one who early put his faith in God and ever trusted in Him. At the age of 12 years he was converted and united with the M. E. church at Leesville of which he was a faithful member until death. During the early years of their marriage they lived in Benton County east of Leesville. On account of ill health he quit farming and for awhile they lived with his brother John and wife in Leesville while he was under a doctor's care. He then purchased a farm north of Leesville where they resided until his death with the exception of part of a year 1918-1919 they spent in Excelsior Springs, Mo., where he went for his health. For the last eight months he had been confined to the house and bed most of his time and was never free from suffering. Clinton MO - Nancy Carpenter was born in Henry County August 4, 1860. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Carleton. She died at her home one mile north of Leesville May 11, 1897. Joined the M. E. Church in 1875 and lived an exemplary Christian life until death. She married Henry Carpenter June 13, 1878. Two children blessed the union and, with a loving husband, an aged and decrepit mother, three sisters and six brothers, mourn her loss. She was a patient suffering with tumorous cancer. Home physicians and city specialists did all they could to alleviate her sufferings but nothing could stay the hand of death. During the last month, her sufferings were almost beyond endurance but she bore them with the greatest fortitude. Her only regret was leaving her husband and children. Johnny, her only son, is just entering manhood and will miss his loving mother sadly. Little Laura is too young to fully realize her great loss but as she grows older will know that she has been denied the greatest blessing earth can bestow. Funeral was at the Tebo church.

bur:
Blairstown Cemetery, Big Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - R. W. Carrington, well-known Blairstown citizen, dropped dead on the sidewalk Sunday about 9 am. as he went to the lodge hall in Blairstown to build a fire for a Masonic meeting. He was taken immediately to a doctor's office, but life was extinct. Dr. W. T. Jennings, County Coroner, was called and he pronounced Mr. Carrington's death due to heart trouble, with which he had been troubled more than a year. No further investigation was deemed necessary. Robert Wiley Carrington, age 57, was born and reared in the Blairstown vicinity and kept his home there practically all his life. For many years he was salesman for a company that bought and sold hay, and during certain seasons he had to be away from home many weeks at a time, but as soon as possible he always returned to his home town to enjoy his family, his home and the wealth of friends which he possessed. When heart trouble caused his health to fail, he resigned from his salesman's position and the past year had helped with papering and painting to occupy his time. When a young man, Mr. Carrington and Miss Verna Swaggart were united in marriage and they were given two daughters, Mrs. Virgil Quillen, now of Chilhowee and Mrs. Robert Stewart, Poplar Bluff, both of whom attended the funeral with their families. Mrs. Carrington died and later he married her sister, Miss Lou Swaggart, who survives with their one son, Bobby of the home. A big, energetic man, always good-natured and happy and never complaining, Mr. Carrington made friends wherever his work took him. For many years he was a member of the Methodist Church in Blairstown, living each day of his life in a Christian way and always ready to do anything to help his church and its work. He was also a prominent Mason. He was one of a family of 10, of which two brothers and two sisters survive. One brother, Dick Carrington, who has been in Excelsior Springs for his health, was at the funeral with his wife. Miss Mabel Horn of Kansas City, niece of Mrs. Carrington, also attended the funeral and those from Clinton were J. B. Swaggart, who went to Blairstown Sunday; Mrs. Swaggart and daughter Nancy Belle, and Mrs. Loyd Munday who went Tuesday for the funeral. The funeral was conducted Tuesday at the church and burial was in the Blairstown cemetery with Masonic ritual.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Jamie Erin Carroll was born March 7, 1988, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, the daughter of Johnnie Ray Carroll and Sandra (Jones) Carroll, and passed away Wednesday, October 2, 1991, at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, being three years, six months and 25 days old at the time of her death. During her short lifetime she was able to accomplish many things. Things the doctors never gave her any hope of doing. She took them as a challenge and more often than not she succeeded. She attended Children's Therapy Center in Sedalia from October 1989 to January 1991, and Share & Care Center for Special Needs from January 1991 to July 1991. Much of her success is attributed to the efforts of her many fine teachers at these schools. She enjoyed being with her family and friends. When she wasn't at home or school, she was happily sitting on her grandparents' lap or playing with her brother and her cousins. In July she was hospitalized for open heart surgery. Many complications arose and she struggled to fight them off. She was cared for by many great nurses and doctors. Jamie was well known by a lot of the hospital staff. She will be greatly missed by all those that loved her. It is comforting to know that her suffering is over and that she now lives in a place that she will hurt no more. Jamie is survived by her parents, Johnnie and Sandy Carroll; a brother, J. R.; her grandparents, John and Deloris Carroll and Darrel and Connie Jones; two great-grandmothers, Mrs. Jewell Jones and Mrs. Gertrude Keller, all of Clinton; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many special friends. Clinton Missouri, Sep 20 1902 - Mrs. Lula Carroll, beloved wife of George W. Carroll, was born in Carthage, Mo. February 24, 1869, being 33 at the time of her death, which sad event took place in the afternoon at her home, 1 1/2 miles southeast of Lewis, Tuesday, the 9th of September, 1902. When quite small, her parents moved to the Indian Nation, where she grew to womanhood. Her parents died, leaving quite a large family of children. She married Mr. Carroll and they had one boy and three girls, now ranging in age from 10 months to eight years, a part of whom will never know mother, much less a mother's love. Sister Carroll leaves two brothers and two sisters to mourn her, all residing in the Indian Territory, only one of her brothers being present at her bedside at the time of her death. About five years ago, during a camp meeting at Lewis, she gave herself over to the Lord, uniting with the M.E. Church. Like Tabitha, she was full of all good works. She had been a long sufferer from cancer and other ailments and was confined to her bed for six weeks before the end came to relieve her of her suffering, always cheerful and full of hope and sunshine, believing that she would yet get well. After many wearing weeks, suffering had reduced her emaciated from to a mere shadow and it was not until then that she gave up all hope of ever recovering and began to confer with her husband as to the future of her little ones, who she would very soon have to leave behind. She told him to try to keep the children together if possible and, amid intense suffering, with a smile on her pallid face, she passed away, her spirit going to the god that gave it. Funeral at Drake's Chapel and burial in a cemetery nearby.

Clinton, MO - Dead - passed away forever - was the sad intelligence whispered from friend to friend and the bell pealed mournfully for all that was mortal of Mary L. Means, wife of G. W. Carroll. For more than five years she has been a constant sufferer from a tumor and on the 23rd of November, she submitted to a very difficult operation, performed by Dr. Prewitt of St. Louis, assisted by Drs. Shankland, senior and junior, and Gray and Holcomb, who removed the tumor, which weighed six pounds but the next day at 3 p.m. her wearied spirit was freed forever from the agonies of suffering which she was undergoing and passed to God who gave it. Mary Carroll was born in Henry county Feb. 24, 1855. George W. Carroll, whose heart now bleeds because she has been taken from him, sought and won her love, and on October 27, 1883, they were married. In 1885, at a protracted meeting conducted by Rev. Galbreath, she gave her heart to Jesus and joined the M. E. Church. She leaves an aged father, five brothers and two sisters to mourn her loss. Her mother, Mary O. Means, preceded her to that better world three years ago last September. Funeral at the Lewis M. E. Church and her body was given to the cold, dark ground, from whence it came, in the Lewis cemetery.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Billie G. Carter, 74, Clinton, died Sunday, February 22, 1998, at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. Funeral services were held February 27 at the First Christian Church, Clinton. Burial was in Clinton Memory Gardens Cemetery. Billie Carter was a good ol' boy by small town standards. A man who was always willing to do more and give more than he ever received. Billie could be described as a teacher, a leader and a person who loved to work with his hands. He particularly took pride in building cabinets and other wood projects and in working at the church, whether it was cooking and serving dinners or maintenance. He was involved in a number of community activities which included leader in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, elder of the First Christian Church, board member and chairman of many departments at the church, driving force during the building of the church, ex-POW group, member of VFW, cook and organizer of community dinners and active member of the Fair Board. He was also a man with a great passion for the outdoors. He spent many happy hours hunting and fishing until his health failed. When visitors came, he especially enjoyed showing them God's work, whether in Missouri or Arizona where they spent the last 12 winters. Billie was born February 7, 1924, to Earnest and Isa Cowan Carter in rural Henry County. He was the third of six children, Leonard (deceased), Thelma (who died in infancy), while Glenn, C.B. and Dorothy continue to be devoted members of the family. Billie joined the Armed Forces in February 1943 during WWII. He was united in marriage to Maurita Snow in Columbus, Kansas, on February 5, 1944. Billie soon reported for overseas duty in Germany, returned home after spending nearly six months in a German POW camp and was discharged in November 1945. After returning home, Billie was a meat cutter at Kimball's Locker and Peckenpaugh's Grocery. He later worked at the post office where he retired after 26 years. Family was important to Billie. He visited his mother Isa daily as long as his health permitted. During his visits he would do errands and upkeep as well as share a cup of coffee. He welcomed Maurita's mother, Mattie (Martha) into their home following her husband, Fayette's sudden death in 1946. Mattie continued to live with Billie, Maurita and the family until her death in 1973. Billie was always patient, appreciative, understanding and above all, loving to Mattie. Those same attributes were shared with his entire family, but most evident in his devotion to Maurita. Billie and Maurita lived most of their 54 years of married life in Clinton as devoted parents and members of the First Christian Church and community. Two of their four children, Marilyn and husband Paul Nold, Karen and husband Jim Munsterman, live near Montrose, while Ron and wife Brenda reside in Lee's Summit, and Stacey and wife Barbara live in Springfield. Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Jun 7 2007 - Bradford Wayne Carter, 30, Lee's Summit, left this life to be in the comfort of the Lord Almighty on June 5, 2007. Brad was born in Clinton on July 31, 1976, to Brenda and Ron Carter. He resided with his parents in Clinton and attended Holy Rosary Catholic School. He graduated from Clinton High School. The family resided in Rolla a brief time before moving to Lee's Summit in 1996. From the beginning, it was evident that Brad was a special person who was given to this earth to carry out special needs and to brighten the lives of all that he touched. Maybe it was his heritage, being born from the union of two strong families, or maybe it was the realization that living with a chronic disease can only bring, but whatever the reason Brad was always an ambassador of good will. He never ever let the fact that he had Cystic Fibrosis lessen his abilities. After moving to Lee's Summit, Brad became interested in fitness and body building. With a strong mentor, brad started to work his frail body into shape and became a model we could all envy. Brad moved on to become a personal trainer and later started his own personal training firm, where he consulted, recommended a diet regiment and supplement program along with a workout regiment. He competed in numerous body building competitions and won awards on Power Shack, Mr. Missouri two years running in different classes and also 10th in the nation in Las Vegas. Most recently, due to health restrictions, Brad worked as a surgical operations tech for SOSI, maintaining customer accounts and equipment for numerous hospitals in the Kansas City area. Brad is survived by his parents, Ron and Brenda Carter, Lee's Summit; his paternal grandmother Maurita Carter of Clinton, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. Clinton MO - Martin Carter died at his home at the Clinton Hunting and Fish Lake, at the southwest corner of the lake, just southwest of Clinton, between 6:30 and 1 a.m. last Saturday morning, blowing out his brains with a shotgun. He had been ill since May 16, 1927, with Bright's disease, heart trouble and other complications. For nearly three months he was bedfast, suffering intensely, only resting day or night under the influence of drugs. He had worried about his condition, knowing he could never be well again, but had gotten better. In fact, so much better, that he and his daughter, Miss Agnes, were staying alone, having done so for some days. He had laughed and joked the night before and had been much better, in fact, that morning was the first time he had dressed himself alone and Agnes jokingly asked him where he thought he was going. She had fixed his favorite chair and left him resting there when she started to feed her chickens, being nearly there, when she heard the gun. Knowing something was wrong she ran back to find the tragic end. She, poor child, met the terrible scene alone. She had given him devoted care every minute of his sickness, assisted by her sister and brothers. She was his homemaker, also his assistant as caretaker of the lake. He had held this position for seven years. Everything was always kept in order and young and old most carefully looked after all hours of the day and night there by him. When he was not well enough to attend to his duties Agnes filled his place. She is a fearless and tireless worker and a capable girl. His children had tried to persuade him to go to their homes and live, but he did not like to give up his work and be of no use in the world. The officers of the lake knowing how he felt, arranged so that Agnes could take care of the work, and it seemed all was well - when no doubt dread filled his mind, which had been so pain racked for so many weary days and nights, that he committed the deed. He was honest and upright in his dealings with men, who were his friends in all walks of life. He had the regard and the respect of his employers - the officers and shareholders of the Club Lake. During his last illness he confessed to believe in his Savior to Rev. A. N. Lindsey, who visited his home. He was anxious that his children should attend church. He was born in Vermont, August 12, 1865. About 39 years ago he married Miss May Frances Woody, who died 16 years ago March 7th. After that he lived with his children until he came to the Club Lake. His married life was blessed with eight children, six of whom survive as follows: Ora and Ernest Carter, who live northwest of Clinton; Henry Carter, who lives on South McLane street; Philip Carter and Mrs. C. S. Middaugh, who live near Golden Gate. Miss Agnes Carter, at home. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Buttener, of Springfield. The body was brought to Sims-Wilkinson undertaking rooms and prepared for burial and taken Sunday afternoon to Field's Creek church, where the services were conducted. Interment in the cemetery near by.

Clinton MO - "In the midst of life we are in death." God has again sent the reaper of death to the ripe fields of harvest and gathered a sheaf more precious than all the world. Golda Mable, only daughter of Charles and May Correll, was born May 15th, 1904, on the old Cruce place, near Delmar, and passed away at the home of her parents, south of Urich, Mo., June 25, 1925, at 10:25 p.m., at the age of 21 years, 1 month and 10 days. She was united in marriage to Everett Carver, of Appleton City, February 15, 1925, who with her father, mother and one brother, and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn her departure. Deceased was a member of the Methodist church at White Oak, having been converted in early girlhood. She was their pianist for some time and was ever willing to do what she could. She had been sick for about ten weeks, and bedfast about seven weeks. All that a devoted husband, loving parents, a kind physician and faithful friends could do was done to relieve her suffering, but all could not stay the hand of death. Golda was a dear, sweet girl, a devoted wife, a loving and obedient daughter, a kind sister and a real sunbeam to all. She bore her intense suffering with great patience and was so hopeful that she would get well and could return to her own home, which she and Everett had planned only four short months ago. Funeral services were conducted from the White Oak church on June 26th, after which the pallbearers, who were classmates of hers in Sunday School, bore her gently and lovingly to the cemetery nearby. Her Sunday School teacher and girls of her class carried the profusion of beautiful flowers, which testified of the love for this sweet girl.
