CASEY, George M.
b: Apr 3 1837, Harden Co, KY
d: Apr 14 1904, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Missouri, Apr 14 1904 - George M. Casey, who has been in poor health for some time, passed away at his beautiful farm home north of Clinton early Thursday morning. He was born in Hardin county, Ky. April 3, 1837 and in 1842 moved to Henry county and his farm home is known as Tebo Lawn and contains about 1200 acres. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Co. F., Sixteenth Mo. Infantry, of the Confederate service and remained in action till the close of the war. He was an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Shawnee Mound and loved by all who knew him. Funeral services were at the home. The body was then tenderly laid to rest in Englewood. Mr. Casey was fifth in a family of 7 children and was the father of ten children, with two sons and six daughter surviving him. He had been married almost 47 years, his wife being Miss Lucy Crosswhite of Ralph? county, this state. Though a man of affairs and of great undertakings, his associates knew him first as a Christian gentleman who carried religion into his business and took God and his conscience into all dealings. He was a soldier, having fought on the losing side from Lone Jack to Appomatox but he was just as courageous; and faithful and gentle in war as in peace and no soldier, friend or foe, ever asked to share with him the contents of his knapsack that the request was not granted. He did more than any other one man to make Henry County famous. Pictures of his pure bred shorthorn cattle adorn the walls of almost all the great hostleries in the United States where cattlemen congregate and the name of "George M. Casey, fine Short-Horn cattle, Henry County, MO." are as familiarly spoken by them as is his honesty, integrity and fair dealing, which were always subjects of remark among them. Nor was he a prophet without honor in his own country. His nearest and lowliest neighbor gives of him the same report. Had the misfortune of business overtaken him and divested him of every vestige of this world's goods, he still would have been successful and a great help to the community in which he lived. The world is richer for his having been in it.

bur:
Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Daily Democrat, Monday, March 11, 1895 - Squire Cashman Is Dead - A Well Known Clinton Citizen Passes Suddenly Away. Esquire W. C. Cashman is dead. This good old man who was well known to so many people in Henry county, quietly breathed his last 8 o'clock this morning. For many years his strength has been sapped by the ailments and weaknesses incident to his excessive obesity. He has long been noted as the largest man in this portion of the State, and in July, 1894, attained his maximum weight of 424 pounds. Life was almost a burden to him as the slightest exertion caused him intense suffering from an aggravated form of asthma and lung trouble. Yet he was always kindly and good natured and greeted his friends as pleasantly as of yore in spite of the tortures he must have endured. His lung trouble increased in severity, and during the past winter he has been confined to his home a large part of the time. He was not a patient man in sickness, and upon the slightest convalescence would venture out of doors, especially if the day was at all pleasant. His weight gradually decreased to about 378 pounds, which was his avoirdupois at the time of his death. Last week he went out of doors several days, and on Saturday went as far away form his home as the square-the block and a-half being quite an exertion for him under the circumstances. Sunday his trouble grew worse and he experienced great difficulty in breathing. And his death occurred suddenly and almost without any warning. W. C. Cashman was born in Breckinridge county, Ky., December 7, 1833, and was consequently 61 years, 2 months and 4 days old. In Mercer county, Illinois, on October 30, 1856, he was married to Miss Amanda Eleanor Scott, who survives him. To them were born nine children, of whom one died in Illinois and two in Missouri. Four daughters and two sons survive. He came to Missouri in 1868 and has lived here ever since. He served four terms as justice of the peace and won the respect of all during his tenure of office. His remarkable weight was acquired during the last ten years. Previous to this time when leading an active life he was noted for his bodily strength, and local annals record many incidents of his muscular prowess. The funeral services will be held at the family residence tomorrow afternoon. - Daily Democrat, Tuesday, March 12, 1895 - The funeral services over the remains of Esquire Cashman were held at the family residence on South Washington street this morning. The house and yard were filled with friends of the deceased, who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect. The ceremonies were simple and unostentatious, and at their conclusion the remains were followed to Englewood cemetery and were laid to rest. The size and weight of the deceased made it necessary for several others to volunteer their assistance in the removal of the casket, which was taken out of the house through a window, form which the sash had been removed. The casket was made to order by Undertaker W. W. Jackson, and was covered with black felt, ornamented with silver trimmings. It was the largest ever constructed or sold by Mr. Jackson in his long experience. Its dimensions were: Length at bottom, 6 feet 3 inches; length at top, 6 feet 5 inches; width 26 inches; depth 28 inches.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Oct 5 2005 - Cleeta Belle Cates, 82, Clinton, died at Westwood Nursing Center, Clinton, Thursday, September 15, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Johnnie Breshears; two brothers, Dewell and Pearlie, and one sister Dorothy. She leaves behind one son, Bill Cates and wife Janet, Clinton; a daughter Brenda Wilson and her husband Bill, Bates City; four grandchildren, Jaime, Travis, John and Shana; six great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Austin, Christian, Hunter, Jessie and Tacy. Cleeta was born in Paron, Arkansas, on July 13, 1923. Paron was a backwoods town with not a lot of activity. People, mostly, just survived. Good people helping each other. The school was across the road from her home and she liked school. In 1939 she met John Cates who was, at that time, in CCC camp up the road from Paron. They married June 21, 11940. John went off to war and Cleeta stayed in Paron. After the war in 1947, John began building electric lines throughout the south so they traveled in a 30-foot trailer. In the following seven years they lived in 52 different places. They settled permanently in Clinton in 1954. For many years Cleeta was busy sewing the family clothes, gardening, church, Bible study, VBS, campfire leader, women's circle, quilting and fishing with John. She always shared her abundant garden and helped many people who needed a little extra support. Cleeta always had a full car for every ball game or any activity where a kid needed a ride. She helped chaperone all-night bunking parties, cooking what anyone requested. She always had goodies for anyone who dropped in. Cleeta had a way with animals, from the cat she taught to roll over for her milk, to a squirrel she gave artificial respiration when it almost drowned. She willingly watched anyone's kids when they needed an emergency sitter. Recently she fell in love with her caregiver's granddaughter Joey. She looked forward to every moment with her. Cleeta loved to travel and continued to do some adventurous traveling until her health began to fail. Recent years have found her busy quilting. She belonged to the local quilt club and managed to have a handmade quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. She knew Jesus as her Savior and one of her greatest desires was to see her family and others come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Her love knew no bounds. We will miss her more than words can say. We love you, Mom, and we'll see you soon. Funeral services were held at Vansant-Mills Chapel Monday, September 19. A private family burial was held in Englewood Cemetery Tuesday, September 20. Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Monday, September 19, at Vansant-Mills Chapel. Citizen Struck By Car And Fatally Injured - W. E. Chapman, of Near Lewis Station, Only Lived Short Time After He Was Hit by Car When Crossing Highway at Calhoun - Death came to W. E. Chapman, well-known Lewis Station farmer, at his home north of Lewis Station at 6 p.m. Saturday, November 24, a few hours after he was struck in Calhoun by an automobile driven by an old acquaintance, Scully Mayhugh, near Calhoun. Mr. Chapman and his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Yount, went to Calhoun on business Saturday soon after lunch and upon arrival left their wagon just off the highway. Later, when he was nearly ready to go home, Mr. Chapman started across the highway to the Farmers' Exchange for a cream can when Mr. Mayhugh's car struck him. Although he was taken immediately to Dr. Pollard's office for treatment, and friends and loved ones gathered to give him every tender care they could, he only lived until six o'clock. He suffered, among other injuries, three broken ribs and an injured back and hip. Mr. Mayhugh has been confined to his bed with a nervous collapse since the accident and has not been told of the death of his friend. Mr. Mayhugh has been in very poor health for several months. William Edgar Chapman was born in Putnam County, West Virginia, April 1, 1856, and came to the Bear Creek neighborhood near Montrose as a lad. In young manhood, he moved to Lewis Station, where he met Laura Belle Johnson, whom he married October 20, 1878, and they spent 56 years of happy married life together. Their 56th anniversary was celebrated this fall with a dinner at their home which was attended by all their children but one. For six years after their marriage, the Chapmans lived in Lewis Station but for the past half century their home has been on their farm, 1 1/2 miles north of Lewis Station. Mr. Chapman was an excellent farmer, having an extensive knowledge of his occupation, and he made a comfortable attractive home for his family. He was most devoted to his children and gave them every possible advantage in education and the other things of life. Perhaps the greatest thing Mr. Chapman had to give to his sons and daughters was the example of a perfect Christian life that he set for them. He belonged to the Drakes Chapel Methodist church, which he joined fifty years ago and where he was a steward for many years, and a faithful attendant at the services. He worshipped the Father most sincerely by living daily as He commanded, ever ready to speak the words that would win others to the Christian way and to praise Him. His children, as a result of this early training, are all active church members. His life was devoted to his home, his God, and to his fellowman, leaving to his children a rich heritage of Christian love. To his last day, Mr. Chapman kept abreast of modern improvements and enjoyed life to its utmost. Although he no longer farmed, he made a garden each spring and usually kept the table supplied with a procession of vegetables from early spring to late fall. He also raised a flock of chickens each year. By temperament, Mr. Chapman was quiet but friendly and interested in everything about him. He went in his car to see friends and neighbors and keenly enjoyed these trips. Surviving him are his beloved companion of 56 years and their five children: Rev. F. R. Chapman of Warrensburg; R. A. Chapman of Kansas City; Mrs. Etta Clarke of Wichita, Kans., and George Chapman and Mrs. Pearl Yount, near the old home. There are also eight grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Dalton and Mrs. Ida Jones of Lewis Station. The funeral services were held Monday at Drakes Chapel. Burial was in the cemetery nearby under the direction of Wilkinson Funeral Service.
