Clinton Eye, June 1939 - Mrs. J. T. Cheatham died at 10:30 a.m. June 16, 1939, at her home on East Franklin Street following an extended illness during which she bore with beautiful courage and cheer the intense pain from a malignant disease. In failing health the past year and half, she became worse last November and in April was taken to a Kansas City hospital where her condition was found incurable. She returned home to be with her husband and other loved ones who never tired of making her as comfortable as possible, and their daughter, Mrs. Guyn Gilbert was constantly by her mother's bedside. September 22, 1889, she was united in marriage with J. T. Cheatham and to them were given two children, James Thomas ("Dude" to his family and friends) who died in France, October 8, 1918, and Julia, now Mrs. Guyn Gilbert. The latter survives to comfort her father, also five grandchildren, Mrs. Forest Groff of Clinton; Mrs. A. C. McGlade, Jr., Mary Ruth, Lucille and Paul Gilbert of Deepwater and one great-grandchild, Wayne Groff, who was a favorite of his grandmother. She was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren, giving them courage to face life anew with her own indomitable power for searching out the silver lining in spite of life's dark clouds. Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Eye, June 1920 - Dude Cheatham's Body Brought From France And Buried In Englewood - James T. Cheatham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cheatham, of Garland, was born Oct. 21st, 1892, near Garland, and died in Brest, France, of pneumonia, Oct. 8th, 1918. Dude, before leaving the U.S. was a soldier in training at Camp McArthur, stationed at Waco, Texas, and would not have left at that time had he not persuaded his captain to let him join the leaving company for France. Dude's every hope was "I want to be a soldier." He had written to his parents telling them that he was going to the top in the army if it was in his power, but death came to him before he had completed his desire in his work, but God said, Dude come up higher. I have need of thee. At the time of his death he had entered a new field of labor, for the salvation of others and his country. Before leaving his home he would sit and sing for hours at at time: "Said a feeble lad to his aged mother: I must cross the deep, deep sea and perhaps in some distant climate there is health and strength for me", but on June 11, 1920, his body arrived at his old home in Garland, where there was a large number of friends gathered to spend these last hours with him. Funeral services were conducted at the Garland church Saturday, June 12. He leaves to mourn his loss his parents and one sister, Mrs. Guynn Gilbert. The remains were laid to rest in Englewood.

CHEATHAM, Jemima Jane HERST
b: Dec 1 1846, Columbia, Adair Co, KY
d: Jan 4 1937, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Consalus Funeral Homes, Clinton & Urich, MO

Mrs. Jemima J. Cheatham, widow of the late Claude E. Cheatham, passed to the more abundant life at 2:30 Monday, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Black, near the Sparrow store. Mrs. Cheatham, who was in her ninetieth year, had the hardihood and strength of pioneer ancestors, so her passing was a surrender of the strong and not a submission of the week. Women of her type are the exception and not the rule in the nervous, high-tensioned world of today and generations have lost some of their vital forces in the passing of such noble, Christian womanhood. Jemima Jane Herst was born December 1, 1846, in Columbia, Ky., Adair County, the child of Campbell Herst and Sally Sharp Herst, staunch Southerners, who were slave owners and people of the soil. When Jemima was a child of two years, her family moved to McDonald County, Ill., where they lived until she was ten years old. In 1856 they were lured to the west, and stopped in Missouri as they had relatives here. To the ten year old Jemima, the tedious, slow journey in two wagons, one drawn by three yoke of oxen and the other by a stout span of horses, was a trek, fraught with all the thrills and romance of real adventure. The waving prairie grass that lined their path of fell as they crushed it under foot, the wild and timid deer or howling wolves that were numerous in those early days were impressed on the mind of the child and always remained a part of the fascination of this country of which she never tired. The ferry across the Mississippi at Warsaw, Ill., and across the Missouri at Boonville were experiences that tried the courage and valor of many a pioneer family but endeared the new acres to them. As a child she attended the old pay school that lasted only a few months each winter and the singing school that were such important parts of community life. Later when the war clouds between North and South broke with three brothers in the southern army and themselves the victims of guerrilla warfare, the pictures of that memorable struggle were indelibly stamped on her memory. As a girl of 15, one day when she was alone at home with her mother, who was ill in bed, a Union Captain and 10 of his company came to their farm, demanding their dinner. The mother, unable to get up, suffered grave anxiety while her inexperienced daughter prepared and served the meal. Despite her fear, Jemima was equal to the emergency and so well did the hasty meal satisfy them that on departure they thanked her courteously. Less gratifying were the experiences with the border raids when their meat and supplies, cattle, hogs and crops were carried off by the marauders. Freedom Church was organized in 1867 when Mr. and Mrs. Herst were among its founders, being charger members and their daughter, Jemima, was one of the first to be baptized on a cold March day when one inch of ice had to be broken in the creek near Bethlehem school for the service. Among other organizers was a young man, Claude E. Cheatham, who had come to the neighborhood from Fulton, Mo., and at the singing school the romance with Jemima Jane Herst began, which culminated in their marriage October 4, 1868, on a rare Sunday in Indian summer. Rev. Wm. Birge of the New Freedom Church read the service. Mr. Cheatham was an elder in the church over 50 years and superintendent of the Sunday school many years. Theirs was a splendid Christian home, worthy of exemplification, always an inspiration to better community life. Three children blessed their union, Mrs. Ben Campbell, deceased in 1923; Mrs. Joe Black of Sparrow, with whom her mother made her home three years, and Dr. C. L. Cheatham of Clinton, Claude Edwin and Lila Jane Cheatham are the only grandchildren surviving. In the fall of 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Cheatham moved to Clinton, making their home at 613 East Grand River street adjoining the home of their son and there on June 13, 1930, Mr. Cheatham was called Home. Mrs. Cheatham continued living in Clinton till her health failed about three years ago. Her daughter was all kindness and devotion to her beloved mother, whose splendid qualities of mind and character and fine Christian principles are a priceless heritage to her children. Funeral services were Tuesday at the Consalus and Peck funeral home and the body was laid to rest in Englewood beside her late husband.

CHEATHAM, Mary ENGLAND
b: Jan 8 1877

bur:
Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Missouri, Sept 1903 - We were sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Harry Cheatham, which occurred at her home near Piper. She was Miss Mary England before her marriage. Her parents moved to Bethlehem township when Mary was quite young. At the death of her mother, she took upon her young shoulders all the responsibilities of her father's household but never did she falter in doing what was right. She was the idol of her father and brothers and her invalid sisters adored her. Her death was indeed sad, as she leaves three little children, one a babe nine days old, to grow to manhood and womanhood without a mother's guiding hand and love. To her husband, her death was a sad blow, as he not only had to give up his young wife and companion, who was so dear to him, but also must be separated from his little children. She said on her death bed, "We will all meet again."

CHEATHAM, Mollie E.
b: Feb 10 1859, Johnson Co, MO
d: Jan 22 1887, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Bethlehem Cemetery, Bethlehem Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Eye, Jan 1887 - Another home that was but a short time since all bright and lovely is now shadowed with darkness and gloom. On the morning of the 22nd, the angels of death took from our midst to dwell in the better land, Mollie, beloved wife of C. E. Cheatham. Was born Feb. 10, 1859, in Johnson County, Mo. Her mother moved to Henry county when Mollie was six years old. She attended school in the county until about 15, then went to Clinton and finished her education under Prof. Cook. While there she first met Mr. Cheatham and was united in marriage with him Dec. 10, 1878, this being her 19th birthday. Their home was blessed with three children, the oldest a girl, and the other two boys, the youngest one being a little babe but eight days old. Mrs. Cheatham united with the Christian church when she was 15 and had the Master's work ever near her heart. In her last hours, she had a clear evidence of God's mercy to her and was ready to be called. Her request was that her children might be brought up in the nuture and admonition of the Lord. Her remains were taken to Bethlehem church for services and to be laid to rest.

Her home was her world and her family was her chief interest, having her greatest satisfaction in their happiness and welfare. Flowers and gardening were hobbies. She was clever, too, as a seamstress, often fashioning from a scrap a neat, new garment for a toddler. Thrifty and industrious, she taught many lessons by examples, all the while pointing the way to the worthwhile things of life. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Anna Manning of Jefferson City; Mrs. Ida Backman of St. James, MO; and Miss Ruby Tubbesing of Kansas City; and two brothers, Garrett of Blairstown and Henry of Clinton. Her parents and one brother, Charles, preceded her in death.

CHIPMAN, David

bur:
Avery Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Saturday, April 8, 1911, we were reminded of the uncertainty of life, that the old must and the young may be called at any time to try the realities of that country, the coast of which we are nearing day by day, to make us feel, at the close of day when the sun sinks beneath the horizon, we are one day nearer home than we've ever been before. One by one our friends are crossing over; the gush from the bleeding heart is hardly stayed, till another comes "to tear agap the healing wound afresh." Words, of mine, are inadequate to express my feelings, when going to call on my friend, David Chipman, expecting to enjoy a pleasant visit with an old pupil whom I had not seen since December, to enter his house, no crepe upon the door to warn me and find him a corpse. I visited awhile with the heartbroken widow, then returned to my home, a sadder if not a better man. David Chipman, the subject of this sketch, is a native Missourian, born in Lafayette county, July 4, 1854, lacking from April 8th to July 4th of being fifty-seven years old. The intimacy of a teacher with a kind, polite and studious pupil can only be appreciated by those who have sustained a like relation, suffice it to say that a close intimacy has subsisted between us unbroken, till death brought the change, the parting of ways. David was a good man, a kind friend, an excellent neighbor, an intelligent businessman, one who was loved by all who knew him. He was married to Miss Mary Avery Dec. 20, 1882. To this union were born three children, Avery, who died in boyhood, a nameless child died in infancy, and Gertrude, who survives him. The Chipman family moved to Henry county in 1867, the writer taught in that district in 1872, when this pleasant acquaintance began and this sacred fellowship awakened. A few friends assembled at the residence to pay their last sad token of respect on the morning of the 10th, at which the Rev. James A. Challenner read the scriptures and prayed, then Rev. L. H. Eakes of the M. E. South, church, preached a sermon of warm sympathy and consolation, after which the remains were taken to the Avery burying grounds for interment. We close by extending to the stricken wife and daughter our deepest and heartfelt sympathy and prayers in which we believe the entire community will join. - W. T. Shivel

Tragic Death At Calhoun - Three-Year-Old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Chipman Accidentally Shoots Himself - The young life of William Lee Chipman, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chipman of Calhoun, was cut tragically short Tuesday evening when he accidentally shot himself with a revolver. Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Mar 17 2004 - Bert Ambrose Chrisman died February 2, 2004, at Golden Valley Hospital following a courageous 12-year battle with cancer. He was just six days shy of his 84th birthday. Born on a farm near Harrisonville to Josie and Ambrose Birtrus Chrisman February 8, 1920, Bert was the seventh of eight children. His years on the farm brought him great joy in spite of three to four hours of chores before riding his horse to school several miles away. Brothers Dale, Alva, Clyde and Jimmy, and sisters, Connie, Opal and Mildred, rounded out this happy and hard-working farm family. On the farm, Bert breathed the grit of the Dust Bowl and lived leanly through the Depression years. Moving from the farm to Clinton at about age 15, he attended the old Clinton High School and was a 1937 graduate. Following graduation, Bert attended the Rolla School of Mines before joining the service where he served in the Philippines as a sergeant in the proud and brave 1st Calvary. As a pioneering and demolition specialist who was exposed to hostile fire, he was offered a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant, but elected to return home to his family. It was in these early years - December 25, 1940, to be exact - that he married his childhood sweetheart, Frances Louise Adkins. Readers should note that Frances caught Bert's eye following drives past her on his way to school in the car he borrowed from his brother, Clyde, for just these purposes. His planning paid off, as he caught Frances' eyes as well. They were married some four years later and remained together 63 years. Until even recently, Bert could be seen in his shop crafting the finest furnishings available anywhere. More than a builder, he was a true artist and charged a mere fraction of the actual time spent in his labors. Take a, walk through the Henry County Museum sometime and you will begin to appreciate the creativity and care he brought to every project he took on. For example, have you heard of the "Miracle Staircase" in New Mexico - the one that supposedly defines the laws of gravity just by standing? Bert visited it a few years ago and proclaimed, "No big deal..! could've built it." Indeed, Bert worked, miracles throughout his career as one of the most trusted well-known and admired builders in our area, with many of the finest homes of Clinton to his credit. Bert had been in the battle for his life during the course of the past 12 years. But throughout chemotherapy and radiation treatments, he never missed a single day of work. Told not to expose his skin to the sun while taking chemo, he did it his way by working through the pain. He spaded and hoed his vegetable garden in 100+ degree weather, wearing layers of garments to shield the sun so he could continue. Perhaps it is this attitude that resulted in him becoming one of the nation's longest living survivors of his particular form of cancer. Certainly, it is a testament to the undying will and extreme mental toughness he acquired form his mother, Josie. (Readers should note that it was Josie Chrisman, who at age 83 and blind, spent her last years caring for the caretaker who had been hired to care for her.) Bert Ambrose Chrisman is survived by wife, Frances, Clinton; son, Col. Dr. Stephen Bert Chrisman and his wife, Jennifer (San Antonio, Texas); daughter, Janice Kelly Ozgunay and her husband, Ike, Clinton, and son, David Adkins Chrisman and his wife, Barbara (Pacific, Missouri). In addition, Bert was the patriarch of 18 grandchildren/great-grandchildren. Bert's brothers, Jim Chrisman (Houston) and Clyde (Springfield) are still living. Graveside services were held at the Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, on Thursday, February 5.

During the weeks of his illness, his suffering was great, but he bore it with patience and fortitude, never murmuring. He called his loving wife, children, and grandchildren as they tenderly cared for him, and told them what he wanted done and said good-bye. He was ready to go, for he feared not to meet his Maker. Clinton MO - Henry C. Churchill, Oldest Mason In Missouri, Died Here Saturday - Pioneer Citizen and Business Man Had Lived In Windsor for Over Sixty-five Years - With the death of Henry C. Churchill, which occurred Saturday, July 11 1936, Windsor has lost the last of its old line pioneer citizens and business men. Mr. Churchill came to Windsor February 1, 1871, as a young man twenty-five years of age, when Windsor was only a small trading center, and opened a hardware store, and from that day until his recent failure in health, he has identified himself with every progressive movement for the betterment of the city. He disposed of his hardware business in 1876 to W. J. Colbow, and purchased a drug store which he operated until 1886, and then disposed of it to join his brother-in-law, the late R. N. Owsley, in the operation of a flour mill, located at the present site of the Windsor Ice Plant. This was destroyed by the explosion of the boilers in 1891, and he then assisted in the organization of a company to build a new mill near the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad, which was afterwards acquired by Ed Willoughby, and later destroyed by fire. Space will not permit to detail all of the activities of Mr. Churchill's life, but it can be said that he was actively connected with every progressive community and business activity for the past sixty-five years. He was Mayor of Windsor for one term, was City Clerk one term, served on the School Board fourteen years, was a charter member of the Windsor Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and had been an active member of the Masonic Lodge for sixty-eight years. Mr. Churchill had the distinction and honor of being the oldest Mason in the state of Missouri. He was a charter member and active in the organization of the Retail Druggist Association for the State of Missouri, and was the first vice-president of the State organization; was active in the organization of the first bank in Windsor in 1877, and was also Secretary of the first Building and Loan Association organized in Windsor. In his home he was a typical Southern host, and his greatest pleasure in life was to entertain and enjoy the fellowship and companionship of his friends. Henry C. Churchill, the son of A. L. and Rebecca C. Churchill, was born in Union County, Kentucky, August 31, 1845, and came to Johnson County, Missouri, with his parents and two sisters in 1866, where he lived until he moved to Windsor in 1871. He was married November 20 1866, to Miss Virginia Owsley, in Johnson County, Missouri, and to this union were born, Armstead L. (now deceased), Eliza (now Mrs. R. H. Garrett) and Florence (now Mrs. J. Parks Ball). Mrs. Virginia Churchill died June 24, 1879, and in October, 1881 Mr. Churchill was married to Miss Missouri Campbell, and to this union were born two children, Samuel Barber and Mary J., who survive him. Mrs. Missouri Churchill died November 29, 1889. He later married Mrs. Sarah E. Barber, who preceded him in death on November 20, 1912. Since her death he and his daughter, Mary J., have made their home on Tebo street in Windsor, where he departed this life on Saturday evening at ten o'clock. In August, 1866, at a revival service conducted by Rev. B. F. Lawler and Rev. Frank Goodwin at old Hickory Point church in Johnson County, he was converted and joined the Hickory Point Baptist Church and has lived a faithful, consistent and active Christian life from that time to the time of his death. In addition to his children, all of whom were with him at the time of his death, he leaves one sister, Mrs. Fannie Calmes, of Windsor, two grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Slack of Sikeston, Mo., and Homer Churchill of Newark, New Jersey and one great grandchild, Churchill Slack of Sikeston, Mo. In his passing it can be truly said that Windsor and community has lost its outstanding pioneer citizen, who has given unselfishly of his time, energy and money to make his town and community a better place in which to live, and he will be remembered by the present generation was one of our most dependable and outstanding citizens. The funeral service was held from the home on Monday morning. The beautiful and impressive Masonic burial service was held at the grave side and he was laid to rest in the family lot in Laurel Oak Cemetery.
