CLARK, David Russel
b: May 26 1842, near Clay City, KY
d: Jun 14 1924, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery CA-CL, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
The reaper came Saturday, at 2:30 p.m., June 14, 1924, and called David R. Clark to his reward. David Russel Clark was born May 26, 1842, near Clay City, Ky. He was a son of William and Miriam Clark. His boyhood days were passed on a Kentucky farm and while only a lad of 18 summers, enlisted in the forces of the Southland in the great Civil strife, remaining in service until near the close of the war when he was captured in Ohio, and spent 18 months in the prison camps. On his release he returned to his native state and at the age of twenty was married to Celie Kimbrell. In 1868, he came to Henry county, and settled on and near the place of his death. David R. Clark was twice married. To the first union three children were born, one dying in infancy. Several years later the wife passed away leaving two little daughters. Only one now survives him - Mrs. Fannie Gilliam, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two grandchildren - Mrs. Celia Howell, of Yakima, Wash., and B. C. Phillips, of Oakland, Calif. Two great-granddaughters survive. The second marriage was to Mrs. Sarah C. Light, of Humansville, Mo. Two sons were born to this union - Elmer, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Edgar, whose home was near the old home place, 8 miles northwest of Clinton. Two grandchildren - Arthur David and Mary Catharine, who was the pride and joy of his heart, survive. Having lost his dear wife by death Feb. 15, 1924, Edgar, the younger son, and good children moved to the home of his father that they might care for and comfort and cheer him in his hours of loneliness and sorrow, which was so much appreciated by the dear, good father. Mr. Clark leaves to mourn his loss two sons and one daughter; also a stepdaughter and son, G. N. Light, of Lajunta, Colo., and Mrs. S. G. Vanscoye, of Lamar, Colo.; also three brothers - Dan and George, of near Clay City, Ky., and Henry, in Oklahoma. Uncle Dave, as he was often called by those who knew and loved him best, was a true American, a good citizen, farmer, stockman, neighbor and friend; always ready to lend a helping hand to promote the growth of a good cause; a faithful and devoted follower of the meek and lowly Jesus, a member of the Garland Baptist church since 1894, being elected deacon in 1896, and filled the office well. The Christian rank is broken and none can fill the vacant space. His home was a place of welcome to his pastor; he loved to learn of Him, that he might know just how to serve his God. Mr. Clark had made preparation to visit his old home state and was to have left the day he died, but God bade him to cross over the silent stream and today he is with his Savior and the loved ones who have gone before. The funeral services were conducted at his home by Rev. D. F. Risk, pastor of the Clinton Baptist church. Masonic and K.K.K. services were conducted at the graveside in Englewood, which were beautiful and impressive. The floral offerings were beautiful, as was the character of our beloved brother and friend.

Samuel Leonard Clark was born September 14, 1899, in Henry County, MO, and departed this life at his Shawnee Mound home on August 7, 1980. Leonard was one of ten children born to Samuel Harper and Levina Bradley Clark. In 1902, the family moved to Shawnee Mound to run the General Store there until 1911. The family then moved to Brownington, where Mr. Clark died the next year. The family then moved back to Shawnee Mound to the home where Leonard spent the rest of his life, with the exception of the three years he lived with his sister and husband, Elizabeth and Harry Tubbesing at Latour. Leonard remained at home to help his mother care for the younger children and to care for her until her death in 1954. Leonard farmed for many years both for himself and helping many farmers in the neighborhood. Later he worked as custodian for the Shawnee School. This was a happy time for hom. He loved all little children, and they always counted on Red, as he was affectionately known, as a true friend in time of need. His happy disposition caused him to have a hearty laugh. No one loved a joke better than he did. He has often remarked about the many graves that he helped dig in the church cemetery, when graves were always dug by the neighbors. He was always one of the first ones there with a pick and shovel. During the last years of his life, his loving sister, Elizabeth Tubbesing of Latour, came to help him every week. She bought his food and medicine for him. Funeral services were held Monday, August 11 at Shawnee Mound Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery.

George Ernest Clary Suddenly Called Home - George Ernest Clary, who lived on the Gaines farm, 11 miles west of Clinton, died at 7 p.m. Sunday with heart failure. He had spent the day in Clinton at the home of his wife's relatives, and had gone home about six o'clock. He had milked one cow and was coming out of the stall, when he screamed and fell. His neighbors, Ora Knight and Bill Ritter had just driven up, and they rushed to him, also his father, A. V. Clary, who was sitting on the porch. He told his father he was dying and asked him if there was anything they could do for him. He had suffered with an attack of influenza several months ago and had not been able to do much since, only having taken up the farm work a few days previous to his death. He had had spells of semi-paralysis. He had had a premonition of his death some weeks before, but both he and his wife had become much encouraged over his condition lately. He was born at the home farm, 5 miles south of Urich, November 27, 1879, and spent his life in White Oak Township. December 26, 1909 he married Miss Ella Cruce. To this union three children were born: Robert Lee age 7 and Kenneth age 2. The little daughter, Geneva Elizabeth, died when but a month old. He also leaves two brothers, John Clary, of Clinton; Ola Clary, of Walker Township; half brother, E. F. Sevier, of Urich; half sister, Mrs. Dora Martin of Springfield. All were here but Mrs. Martin. He was converted in his youth and joined the M. E. Church, South. After his marriage he joined the Christian church with his wife. He was a good husband and father, and interested in farming and stock raising, which was his life work. His death falls most heavily on his dear little wife, who with heavy heart and tear dimmed eyes, must take the place of both parents in the hearts and lives of her two small sons. For her and the other loved ones we can but pray that the Comforter may come in this the saddest hour of their life. May the little ones ever be guided by the wise council of this little mother of theirs. The funeral was conducted at the White Oak church by Rev. A. N. Lindsey, Monday afternoon. Interment in the cemetery by the side of his little daughter.

Clinton MO - The character of which we are about to write was a Christian mother. She wrought on the stage of life, not as a star performer, but as a servant behind the scenes, labors that the drama in which she plays may glorify the Ruler of human destiny. The curtain has fallen and the drama in which she played so noble a part has ended in tragedy if she had no hope. But she had more than hope. She had an abiding faith in Him who is able to save her soul and death came not as a conqueror but as a deliverer to prepare her tired body for its long and quiet rest. The subject of this sketch, Mary F. Dunn Clary, was born October 8, 1847, in Cooper county, Mo., and came with her parents to Henry county just previous to the Civil war. Her father, Major Dunn, was a pioneer settler in the Hickory Grove neighborhood and she spent her life within a few miles of the hold home. January 4, 1868, she was united in marriage to George A. Sevier, who passed away April 13, 1874, leaving her with four small children, Jas. W. Sevier, who died in October, 1921, Rosa Williams died in August, 1907, E. F. Sevier, of Urich, and Mrs. W. G. Martin, of Springfield, survive her. January 27, 1877, she was united in marriage to A. V. Clary, who with three sons, John E., of Clinton, George E. and Ola, of Urich, together with one brother, J. N. Dunn, survive her. She departed this life at her late home 5 miles south of Urich, March 21, 1924. Age 76 years, 5 months and 15 days. Funeral service was conducted at the Presbyterian church, of Urich. Interment in Hickory Grove cemetery. The funeral sermon was based on 2nd Timothy 4:7: I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. These words were appropriate since her life confirmed to the highest Christian principles. Sublime indeed, is the service of mother, for no pen nor picture can portray the secret ministries that spring from a heart full of love, our minds are incapable of its full measure. When hearts are aching with sorrow and memory's chamber overflows with reflections, we are consoled by the thought that her contribution to the world was a blessing.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - James D. Clay, 80, formerly of Clinton, died at the Alpine North Nursing Center in Kansas City Thursday, August 22, 1991. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Consalus chapel, with burial in the Hopewell Cemetery. - James Dudley Clay was born October 24, 1910 in Yale, Oklahoma. He was the son of James Thomas and Marvella Sallee Clay and was one of thirteen children, all of whom have preceded him in death. Life in Oklahoma, as Jim so often recalled, was filled with hard work and wonderful family times. His heritage cultivated a lifetime interest in our country's western heritage. the open range, and man's ability to use the earth productively. Jim Clay was part of a generation who, as a child, experienced World War I, the war to end all wars, and to grow into a young man during the twenties - a golden age of reckless abandon - that eventually resulted In the Great Depression. It was during this time, 1931, that James Clay met, courted and married Georgia Fay Roberts in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. This was a union, likes most marriages of this era, that held fast to the vow of "through sickness and health, through richer, or poorer, till death do us part." The thirties in Oklahoma offered very little but hard work, when you could get it, and a promise that times had to get better. The early years of their marriage found Jim and Georgia in the oil fields of Oklahoma and the start of a family, beginning with their daughter, Lorene. Other children quickly followed, Mary. Ruth, James Henry. Betty, Patricia, and Virginia. During these years Jim worked for Champlin Oil Refinery in Naval Reserve, Oklahoma. Like countless millions of young men born into this era, World War Ii brought an abrupt halt to any plans or goals they might have had. His services in the United States Army began in 1944. He served in Central Europe and African campaigns as a heavy machine gun operator in the 304th Infantry, part of General George Patton's Third Army. Jim was awarded three bronze stars, a good conduct medal. entitlement to the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaigns ribbons and an overseas bar. After his honorable discharge in October of 1945, Jim Joined his wife and young family in Clinton. It was here that he began his career in the construction industry, first with the R.J. Wastell Construction Company as a heavy equipment operator. Jim Clay was part of numerous major construction projects, ranging from the country's new interstate highway system, government missiles bases, Kaysinger Dam, Kansas City Power and Light expansion, to the street system of Clinton. Jim Clay was an ambitious man. He gained a reputation within the construction trades as a top-notch heavy equipment operator and was admired for his precision, dexterity, and speed. He was a member of Hoisting Engineers Local 101 and retired in 1973. In addition to finding a new career in Clinton, Jim and Georgia Clay also added fives sons to the family tree, George, Ben, Jack, Jerry and Bill. Jim Clay had a great love for the outdoors, and during lulls in the construction business took opportunities to work with cattle, ranching, and farming. Jim and Georgia Clay were very good parents, instilling in their children the virtues of honesty, loyalty and hard work. Theirs was a union that held fast to the idea that the family was the cornerstone of a productive society. Both found great joy in the accomplishments of all their children and in the later years, even greater joy in their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was great depth to Jim and Georgia's personal commitment to one another. Shortly after Georgia's death in 1990, Jim was stricken with a massive stroke, leaving him unable to walk and very limited ability to move. But far more frustrating was the inability to speak, for it was his great talent to relates stories of his boyhood. to talk about the many changes he had seen in his life, and to voice an opinion, something he was never hesitant to do. The last months of his life were I spent in Alpine North, a skilled nursing center Kansas City. Even here Jim quickly won the hearts of the nursing staff and gained a reputation for his sense of humor, sly smile, and compatibility with other patients. Let us not shed tears for his passing. We can takes comfort that he has at last joined his beloved wife and mother of his children, and even though the span of his life saw two world wars, a great depression, a country coming of age. and a modern era that is often perplexing, Jim Clay was part of it all. His was an exciting and momentous life, and the legacy of his existence is richly assured. Funeral services were held Sunday. August 25, 1991 at Consalus Chapel, Clinton. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery, Henry County.
