d: Oct 7 2006, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery CO-CU, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, MO

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Oct 19 2006 - Goldie Opal Cromer, daughter of Bert Reuben and Gertrude May (Meadors) Bryant, died October 7, 2006, at Golden Valley Hospital. She was born December 4, 1909, near Deepwater. Goldie was always a quiet and respectful young girl and grew into a loving, gracious, beautiful woman. On July 17, 1926, she married Charles Russell Cromer. They built their home next to his parents' home place and they were hardworking farmers until they retired and moved to Clinton in 1970. They were married for 64 years. Russell preceded her in death January 26, 1991. I'm sure all of us remember going to the farm and staying for a time. It was always such great fun. Gathering the eggs would be one fond memory, as well as candling them in the storm shelter. And Goldie's homemade cottage cheese was a very special treat. Goldie and Russell sadly did not have children of their own, but were blessed with loving nieces and nephew, Eugene Singer and wife Esther, Vickey Batschelett of Clinton, Betty Ann Stephens and husband Gary, Gladstone, and Shirley Underwood and husband Lynn, Sedalia. She has many great-nieces and great-nephews, plus children and grandchildren of her nieces and nephew. Also surviving are the wives of Chester and bud, Geraldine Bryant of Clinton and Ann Bryant of Gladstone. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell; brothers Roy, Chester, Reuben and Raymond (always known as Bud); sisters, Atha Young, Rosa White and infant sister, Jewell Marie. After moving to Clinton they did not exactly give up farming. They had a very nice vegetable garden that they both enjoyed working in. They also enjoyed taking care of and watching the hummingbirds. After Russell's death, Goldie was talked into moving into an apartment, leaving all the hard work of keeping up a big house and she soon grew to love it. Her very good friend Alberta Shepard was able to get the apartment next to Goldie and that was perfect for both of them. Brother Reuben would come to Clinton and they all would take their Saturday or Sunday trips around the countryside. They would go to adjoining towns and have lunch at different favorite eating places. When Rube didn't make it to Clinton they would go to Deepwater and enjoy some of his excellent cooking. Sadly Alberta also preceded Goldie in death and that was devastating to Goldie and the rest of Goldie's family, as she was loved by all. Goldie's mind and soul remained excellent until death, but her body began to let her down. It was difficult for her to walk and do everyday things she was used to doing. Then she had an angel step up to bat and that was her great-niece Lynette Kreisler. Lynette has been a Godsend to Goldie and the rest of Goldie's family. She arranged 24-7 care for Goldie for some time, took her to the doctor when needed and the beauty shop as long as Goldie was able to go, then arranged for her beautiful hair to be taken care of at home. The caregivers Lynette was able to find were also angels. They have given their heart and soul to Goldie and she loved them all. They were there for her to the very end, coming to the hospital, visiting, fixing her hair, reading to her. The family expresses great feeling of gratitude to them. The passing of our loving Goldie is such a sad time for family and friends, but she was ready and is now in a pain-free place and we thank God. Funeral services were held at Vansant-Mills Chapel Tuesday, October 10. Interment was in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.

CROOKS, George F.

d: Jan 15 1954, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Shawnee Mound Cemetery, Shawnee Twp, Henry Co, MO
Death of Prominent Shawnee Mound Farmer. Funeral services were held Jan 17, 1954, at the Shawnee Mound Cumberland Presbyterian Church, for George F. Crooks, prominent farmer of the Shawnee Mound community, who died Jan. 15. The pallbearers were nephews and cousins, Denver Crooks, Rawleigh Crooks, Brack Crooks, William Howard Jones, Billy DesCombes and Walter Bailey. Burial was in the Shawnee Mound Cemetery. George F. Crooks, one of the four children of Ferdinand and Mary DesCombes Crooks, was born Dec. 21, 1875, in the Shawnee Mound community, only about 500 feet east of the spot where death claimed him. He began his schooling at Shawnee Mound, and then attended Hickory Grove when his parents moved to that community. He was later enrolled in the Normal School at Warrensburg. In the fall of 1893, he professed his faith in Christ as his Saviour and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Shawnee Mound. He was always interested in the work of the church, serving as a deacon several years and as an elder 40 years. On Jan. 15, 1901, he was married to Miss Dora Mae Elder, who was his faithful companion for 47 years, or until her death in May, 1948. Just 53 years to a day from the date of their marriage, they were reunited - this time in the home eternal. It was a reunion to which he looked forward, one that would bring the happiness earth had not held for him after her passing. The Crooks home was blessed with three children, two daughters and a son, all of whom survive and reside in the immediate community; Mrs. John Harclerode, Charles Crooks and Mrs. Wallace Gray. Six grandchildren will sadly miss their "Granddad," as he had made his home with his children after his wife's death. The grandchildren are: Don and Carl Harclerode, Alvin and Wayne Crooks, and Virginia and Floyd Gray. One sister, Mrs. Della Holiday, survives, and lesser relatives. A sister and brother preceded in death. Mr. Crooks had spent his life in the afore mentioned communities with the exception of the years he spent in Imperial Valley, California, looking after interests there. In 1935, he returned to Missouri, called by the illness of his younger sister, and following her death returned to California only for short periods. He had been in failing health for some time, but a heart attack Jan. 9, at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Gray, took his life. As a farmer, Mr. Crooks was an outstanding success. He loved farming and created in his children too a love of the land and country living. He was happy to see all three well established on farms, with his son on the old home place. Mr. Crooks was a farmer of the old school, never having used a tractor, yet he watched with interest and approval the scientific practices and modern methods employed on his children's farms, and he felt a pride in their achievements. The life of Mr. Crooks was an open book and needs no eulogy. Honor, loyalty, kindness, understanding, helpfulness - these were his attributes. A large crowd from far and near attended last rites, attesting their esteem for the good man.

CROOKS, Harvey Allen
b: Mar 10 1869, Shawnee Mound, Henry Co, MO
d: Jan 11 1950, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
arr: Wilkinson Funeral Home, Clinton, MO (Historical)

Harve Crooks at Rest. Outstanding Citizen of Shawnee Mound Vicinity Succumbs at General Hospital. In the death at 5:30 a. m. Wednesday, Jan 11, of H. A. Crooks, the county has lost a staunch citizen, the Shawnee Mound community, one of its most estimable and best neighbors and his family, a devoted father. Crowned with venerable years, ever keen and alert, he kept abreast of the world happenings to the end. Mr. Crooks became ill about two weeks ago and had been in the Clinton General Hospital since Monday, Jan 2, suffering from bronchial pneumonia and heart trouble. Administering to his every need and remaining at his bedside constantly, were his devoted daughter, Mrs. Sam Pickering, beloved principal and first grade teacher at Jefferson Park School, and Mr. Pickering, who with their son, Bobby, lived with Mr. Crooks on the old homestead just southwest of Shawnee Mound. Harvey A. Crooks was born March 10, 1869, the only child in his family. The historic old homeplace where he was reared to young manhood was his home at the time of death. Immediately after he was married March 26, 1890, to Anna May Paxton, he took his bride to this sightly location on the top of the hill overlooking Shawnee Mound. The large house that still stands on the hill was built 10 years after his marriage. Except for a short time spent in Sedalia and Clinton, his life was lived on his old homestead. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. Surviving, besides Mrs. Pickering is a son, Raymond Crooks of Pennsylvania, who visited his father last month. After the death of his son, Dr. Harry Crooks, and his wife; their young daughters, Louise and Mildred, were taken into the home and given the love and affection of real parents. Louise is now Mrs. Vernon Gregory, who has a newborn babe, and Mildred, now Mrs. Paul Musgrove of Iowa, came last week with her husband, Dr. Musgrove, to help in the care of Mr. Crooks. They returned home Sunday. He leaves in all five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Until Mr. Crooks' retirement in 1927, he had one of the best equipped and well stocked farms in the county. The Crooks home always radiated with hospitality and it was on this lawn that for several years the Shawnee Mound annual chicken dinners were served. Thrifty, and industrious, Mr. Crooks sought the best in life for his family and community, where he was always a valued citizen. A staunch member of the Shawnee Mound Cumberland Presbyterian Church, for many years he taught the Men's Bible Class. Mrs. Crooks preceded him in death in December 1941. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Shawnee Mound Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Benny Bartlett Crowder died Tuesday, August 26, 1997, at Golden Valley memorial Hospital in Clinton at the age of 76 years, one month and 17 days. He was born July 9, 1921, in Deepwater, the son of Ben Eli and Lee Kerns Crowder. He lived in and around Deepwater all of his life. Benny was a veteran of the United States Army. During World War II, he served in the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. Benny worked hard all his life. He was a coal miner, farmer, truck driver and also worked at Kansas City Power and Light while it was being built. He was married to Roberta Shaffer in 1969. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and was a friend and comrade to many. Hunting and fishing were two of Benny's favorites, but his great love was coon hunting. Of all his memories, this was his most cherished - hunting with his trophy-winning dog "Bomber" and his buddies. He was a great storyteller, both truth and fiction. Usually no one could tell the difference - his friends gave him plenty of competition. In later years, he spent a lot of his time at the Deepwater boat ramp, which he helped build. There he not only fished, but loved to supervise all the others. He was a member of the Brownington Baptist Church, American Legion and Henry County Coon Hunters Association. He is survived by his wife Roberta, of the home; four daughters, Carole Krewson and husband Jesse, Shirley Schmidt and husband Joe, Linda Hamling and husband Gilbert, all of Clinton, and Jodi James, Osceola; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Haldor Lee Crowder was born November 25, 1923, youngest son of Oliver Kilburn Crowder Sr. and Rosa Lee Davis on the family farm east of Appleton City known then as the Rosedale Stock Farms. He peacefully departed from this world there May 13, 2008. His entire life had been spent on this family farm being a Missouri Century Farm in 1979. Haldor had been nicknamed by an older cousin as "Steve". He attended a one-room school near the farm. He graduated from Appleton City High School in 1941. He immediately began farming. Haldor married Edith Zeiler on September 9, 1945 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Appleton City by Rev. G.A. Moss. Their life together began 63 years ago on this family farm. They were blessed with two daughters Antionette Lee 1949, and Mary Ann 1958. Haldor had farming running deep within his veins and breathed production agriculture and the farm life. Recollections noted his farm experiences and the adventures of the Crowder boys on the home place east of town. He and his brother, O.K. Jr. had Allis Chalmers Roto balers and became known as "experts". He had made many threshing runs with a grain separator in the community. Haldor was blessed in knowing his labor helped provide bounty and food for others. His labor was performed without any promise of growth or harvest to come. He planted with faith – in God, believing God would provide the needs to bring forth the abundant harvest. His ability to communicate enthusiasm, encouragement, and patience to others brought fulfillment. He felt in time his efforts would yield positive results and knew God would not be offended by excellence. He extended himself to the community by serving two terms on St. Clair County R-2 School Board. Other areas were the Appleton City Road Board, St. Clair County CFAS, Church Board and a property trustee at Church of God Holiness where he faithfully attended. Haldor was also the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for the church for many years. In later years, he pursued antique tractor restoration of International Harvester, John Deere, and Oliver tractors. He enjoyed using them along with his threshing machine as part of demonstrations during the landmark year celebrations of Appleton City. Haldor took much delight in his entire family and felt he owed God his very best having been blessed abundantly. He counted his wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as his richest and greatest blessings. His concern and compassion reached to his extended family, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He shared many stories of growing up as the youngest son, his threshing and farm stories from horses to tractors. He was awed by the wonder of God’s handiwork and creation. The delights of his eyes were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing was better than watching, talking, and being in the midst of the merriment. He felt his life richer because he experienced a bit of joy from them that belongs in Heaven. Haldor’s heavenly welcoming group included his parents, Oliver and Rosa Crowder, three brothers, O.K. Jr., David, and Allen and a nephew Don and many friends Surviving are wife Edith; daughters Mary Ann, of the home, Antionette Lee and husband Larry Bracher; grandchildren Steve (wife Delores), granddaughter Annisa Bracher and grandson David Bracher; great-grandchildren Ethan, Emily and Evan Bracher all of Appleton City and a host of other relatives and friends. He did not tell us how to live, he lived it – and let us watch him do it. Greatly missed, but not forgotten; Lives forever in our hearts

Clinton MO - Mrs. Jennie Cruce died about 1:45 a.m. May 7 at her home, 505 East Grand River, from advanced age and complications. She had been in ill health for some time, gradually growing weaker. Her daughter, Mrs. Ella Clary, had been with her constantly since last September, devotedly caring for her beloved mother in every way possible, assisted during the last few days by her brother, Paul Cruce, and another sister, Mrs. E. O. Hedlund, Warrensburg. Jennie Strickland was born September 21, 1862, in Indiana and shortly afterward came to the Bethlehem community in Henry County with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Strickland and family. At the death of both her parents, when about eight years old, she made her home with relatives, and as soon as she could, started making her own way in life. When about 21 she married George Cruce, and for a long time they lived north of Delmar. The rest of her life was spent in Clinton. Mrs. Cruce instilled into her children the fundamentals of a Christian life, teaching them by her example, patience with which to meet life's trials. She was always busy at some task which filled each day to the brim with homely work or with helping sick and troubled neighbors and friends and her children in their time of need. She was a faithful member of the Christian church with which she united in her youth. Between her and Mrs. Clary there was so close a bond of sympathetic understanding and love that Mrs. Clary could brighten her pain-filled days as none other.
