DALTON, Bertha L. SELL
b: Jan 29 1891, near Leesville, Henry Co, MO
d: Nov 4 1993, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Consalus Funeral Homes, Clinton & Urich, MO

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Bertha L. Dalton, 102 years old, of Clinton, passed away Thursday morning, November 4 1993 at Westwood Nursing Home in Clinton, where she had been for approximately 3 1/2 years. Bertha L. Sell was born June 29, 1891 to John Wesley and Laura Belle Sell near Leesville in Henry County. She lived her entire life in Henry County except for a few months spent in Colorado. Her elementary education was received at the rural school near Leesville. On October 11, 1908 she was married to Lee William Dalton, also a native of Henry County and to this union were born ten children. She joined the Tebo Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member. She loved her church and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. She lived a devoted Christian life and was a loving mother, setting a good example for all who came to know her. Her greatest joy was to have her children come home for a meal. It didn't matter if there were two or a dozen, she had prepared for all. She was a talented cook and well versed in the arts of homemaking. She had many friends and relatives visit her and even after entering the rest home they found her to be an inspiration to them. Her cheerful disposition always radiated sunshine, and she was noted for a loving smile which she was generous in giving to all who came. She was very patient and kind, never complaining and kept up with news of her family and friends. Although she lived to be 102 years, 3 months and 6 days, she put up a triumphant fight, but had said several times she was ready to go home to her Maker. What a heritage she has left for her family. She spent so much time in her last years in making crocheted tablecloths, bed spreads and doilies. It would be impossible to count the many beautiful quilts she has made, giving them to children and grandchildren to enjoy and treasure each stitch of love she put into them. Bertha and Lee were permitted to celebrate 60 years plus 3, together and in 1983 she was chosen as the Grandmother of the Year from Missouri, where 210 of her family were entertained at Jefferson City with a luncheon at the State Capitol with Mr. and Mrs. Kit Bond in her honor. Her husband, Lee, passed away in December 1971 and a son, Gene, only a few months previous of the same year. In 1983 she lost another son, Emmett and only this year in July she lost a daughter, Geraldine Witherspoon. What a happy reunion with all those gone before along with several grandchildren, one brother and five sisters. She will be sadly missed by three sons, Carl Dalton of Ault, Colorado, William Dalton of Kingsley, Iowa, and LeRoy Dalton of Deepwater; four daughters, Laura Mae Barrows, Margie Sheek and Pauline Wood, all of Clinton, and Doris June Evans of Deepwater. She leaves one brother, Hubert Sell, of Clinton, and a sister, Cora Bernard of Clinton, and Anita Lionberger of Greely, Colorado. Besides the seven living children she leaves 45 grandchildren, 131 great-grandchildren and 109 great-great-grandchildren, making a total of 292 living blood descendants. There are six adopted grandchildren and several step-grandchildren who thought of her as their own grandmother. The spouses of her children also loved her as she filled the vacancy of their own biological mother, as she accepted and loved them as her own. Funeral services were held Saturday, November 6, 1993 at the Tebo Baptist Church, Henry County. Pall bearers were all grandsons, James Dalton, Larry Barrows, Dewayne Witherspoon, John Dalton, Randy Sheek and Larry Dalton. Burial was in the Peaceful Cemetery at Calhoun. DARR, Martha "Mattie" E. WAUGH
b: Mar 17 1863, Montgomery Co, IN
d: Apr 25 1931, near Norris, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Carpenter Cemetery, Chilhowee, Johnson Co, MO
Clinton MO - Mrs. "Mattie" Darr passed from this life, Saturday night, April 25, at 11:15, (1931) after an illness of four months. Mrs. Darr was one of our most highly respected and useful citizens, having spent the greater part of her life in this community. She has a host of friends by whom she will be greatly missed. Martha Waugh, the daughter of J. W. and Mary Waugh, was born March 17th, 1863, in Montgomery county, Indiana, and came to Missouri with her parents, in early childhood and has been a resident of this vicinity every since. She was joined in wedlock to Edwin F. Darr Nov. 1st, 1882, and to this union were born three daughters and one son; Mrs. Edna Carpenter, Yakima, Wash; Mrs. Mabel Vance, Blairstown, Mo.; Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, Kansas City, Kans., and Paul H. Darr, Brenham, Texas. She leaves seven grandchildren, two of whom have preceded her in death. They were Forest Dan Goodwin and Margaret Ruth Goodwin. Those living are as follows; Mrs. Kenneth Stewart, Jakima, Wash; Mrs. Jess Thacker, Yakima, Wash; Mr. Raymond Vance, Tyler, Tex; Mr. Jean Edwin Vance, Blairstown, Mo.; Mr. Paul H. Darr, Brenham, Tex.; also one great grandson Kenneth Jr., Stewart, Yakima, Wash. The brothers and sisters are Wm. Waugh, Pampa, Fla (should be Texas), James H. Waugh, Blairstown, Mo.; E. R. Waugh, Blairstown, Mo.; Richard Waugh, Clarksville, Iowa, Mrs. L. L. Smith Urich, Mo; Mrs. James Adair, Chilhowee, Mo. She professed Christ and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church in early life and had taught the Ladies' Bible class for ten years. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon. Six nephews were pall bearers. The remains were laid at Carpenter Cemetery, Johnson Co. Mo. - The Clinton Eye, Apr. 1931: Mrs. Mattie Darr At Rest - The spirit of one of Henry County's most beloved women, Mrs. Mattie Darr went into eternity Saturday night, April 25th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Vance, near Norris. She had been suffering with heart trouble, dropsy, and complications several years, but was only seriously ill four months previous to her death. Her husband E. F. Darr, died four years ago and since that time she had been staying with her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, in Kansas City but this year she became so very homesick that as soon as possible her daughter brought her to the home of the other daughter near Norris, where she spent her remaining days on earth. Mrs. Darr expressed the desire repeatedly that she wanted to die in Henry County among the people with whom she had spent so many years, and whom she loved. Mattie Waugh was born in Montgomery Co. Ind. about 68 years ago. She came with her parents, the late Mr & Mrs. John W. Waugh to Henry Co. in 1866, when they settled in the Norris neighborhood, and she lived there and in Blairstown the remainder of her life except a few months when she lived in Kansas City. Her beloved husband, the late E. F. Darr, ran a delivery stable in Blairstown for years, also for many years ran a daily hack line from Norris to Clinton taking freight, passengers and carrying Uncle Sam's mail for which he received $150 a year. Even in this time when so many people are complaining of the low wages, one can scarcely conceive of this, and it would be impossible to find a man to take a contract as mail carrier from Norris to Clinton daily for $150 a year, which is less than 50 cents a day. Mr. & Mrs. Darr knew both happiness and hardship, and she was a woman of exceptional graces endowed with a cheerful spirit that radiated happiness to all. Her life was one of helpfulness and doing the task that was nearest, not as a duty but as an opportunity. She was devoted to her husband and children, but found time to participate in the activities of the Presbyterian church, of which she was a member, and for ten years taught a class of ladies, whom she always referred to as "her girls." These girls acted as flower bearers at her funeral. It was good that she could return to die in the community that she loved, because during her last days on earth friends and neighbors daily visited her, giving her bits of news and happiness and the love that she so deserved. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Paul Darr, Tyler, Texas, and three daughters, Mrs. Edna Carpenter, Texas, Mrs. Nellie Goodwin, Kansas City, Mrs. Frank Vance, Norris. She also leaves the following brothers, W. B. Waugh, Texas, J. H. and E. R. Waugh, Norris, R. L. Waugh, Clarksville, Ia, the latter came for the funeral and two sisters, Mrs. L. L. Smith, Urich and Mrs. James Adair, Chilhowee. The funeral was conducted in the Presbyterian church in Blairstown and the burial was in Carpenter Cemetery. (Note: Mattie's mother the former Mary Henderson, died in Indiana before her father and his second wife, Julia Ann Hamilton came to Missouri.)

Clinton MO, Oct 1927 - Many hearts were saddened last Thursday when they heard of the sudden death of Mrs. Fritz Datweiler. This occurred at her home on West Ohio street at 4:35 that morning, after an illness of less than an hour from heart trouble. The last few weeks she had been bothered with asthma at times, but was as well as usual the evening before, and had sat up and talked and joked with her son Ernie, and wife, until 10 p.m. She took suddenly ill at 4 a.m., her spirit only lingering a few minutes until called to the eternal realms. Her maiden name was Lenora Christena Guenther, and she was born in Montrose, June 2nd, 1856. On August 27th, 1876, she was united in marriage with Fritz Datweiler, residing on their farm, east of Clinton, until moving in town in 1917. Mr. Datweiler preceded her in death May 3, 1924. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. M. D. Coates, of Los Angeles, Cal., and two sons, Fred and Earnie, of Clinton; two sisters, Mrs. Rosalie Berneker, San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Theresa Brownsberger, of Montrose; two half-brothers, A. M. and N. B. Conrad, of Montrose; also six grandchildren. She loved all her grandchildren most dearly, and was so devoted to the little grandson in her home - Bobby Gene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Datweiler. She seemed most happy when watching over him at his play and listening to his childish prattle. Mrs. Datweiler had been a member of the Christian church for a number of years, living a quiet, unassuming Christian life; kind to all about her, and was held in the highest esteem by her many friends and acquaintances. The sympathy of all goes out to her children and other loved ones, who are so sadly bereaved by her death. May the love and the precious promises of the Savior, whom this good mother trusted and served, sustain them in this time of grief. The funeral services were conducted at the residence last Friday and the remains interred in Englewood cemetery.

Clinton MO, Nov 1925 - Otto Datweiler died at his home on the corner of Jefferson and 7th streets, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, after an illness of 18 months. A complication of troubles baffled the skill of specialists everywhere he went. He was surrounded by every care and attention, nothing was left undone. Months ago his malady was pronounced incurable, but he never gave up hope and used every means possible to effect a cure. He was bedfast two weeks previous to his death. Mr. Datweiler was born four miles east of Clinton, on the home farm Jan. 26, 1872. He married Miss Florence Nivens, Jan. 15, 1901. They went to housekeeping on a farm near his home place which is three miles east of Clinton. They lived there until five years ago they moved to Clinton and built a most attractive home on the block they bought on Jefferson street, that was for years known as the Barnhart place. He leaves to mourn his death, his beloved wife, and one brother John C. Datweiler. Henry county has lost one of our most dependable citizens. He was a man of quiet and studious nature, who put the things he knew into practice. He had a vision for his county and knew how to realize good things for an entire countryside; it required individual effort. The everyday things must be kept up to the highest standard in order to get ready for the larger things. He and his wife were devoted companions, sharing joy and sorrow. They worked and planned together. Life was a joy to them, as all their interests were the same. Their farm was a joy to the entire county. The soil fertility was kept up to the highest standard. They specialized in Jersey cows and butter making. Mr. Datweiler was not satisfied unless his cows were the highest type. His meadows were free from weeds, the barns and water supply were perfect and everything in equipment was up-to-date. After they moved to Clinton they took great pride in their place here. Mr. Datweiler was absolutely unselfish and worked with equal ador for neighbor and friends or a cause in which he believed. although he had made farming and dairying so profitable, he realized that to make farming as a whole profitable, farmers must organize. For that reason, he gave his time unstintingly and without renumeration for the upbuilding of the Missouri Farmers Association. He was a follower of the Christ being converted early in life and uniting with the Presbyterian church. He was a citizen of the highest type. To his beloved companion he leaves behind, we only can pray that the comforter may make it possible for her to bear her great sorrow. The funeral services were conducted from his late home Wednesday. Interment in Englewood.

Clinton MO - Mrs. J. C. Datweiler Died In Kansas City - Clinton and the surrounding community bowed in grief last Saturday when they learned of the death of Mrs. J.C. Datweiler in the Wesley Hospital in Kansas City. that morning at 3 o'clock. She had suffered with gall stones for a number of years, but the last four weeks she had grown much worse until her physician deemed an operation the only chance of saving her life, so she went to Kansas City on Wednesday with the hope high in her heart and that of her family that the operation would make it possible to live without pain. She underwent the operation on Friday afternoon, and it was found that her condition was much more serious than they had thought and she died a few hours later. Susan Elizabeth Johnson was born in Henry county, Indiana, Dec 1, 1870. At the age of 16 she came with her parents to Henry county, Mo., and they lived on a farm 2 miles east of Clinton. It was there John C. Datweiler wooed and married her Jan. 30, 1895. He survives and their four children - Horace, who lives east of Clinton; and their three daughters - Misses Evelyn, Ruth and Helen. She also leaves her parents, A.N. Johnson and wife, who live on South 8th street; one brother, Chas. Johnson, east of Clinton, and three sisters - Mrs. Clyde Knoles, who live just east of Clinton; Mrs. Chas. Simes, on South 8th street, and Mrs. Owen Taylor, 6 miles northwest of Clinton. The first years of the married life of John C. Datweiler and wife were spent on a farm near Garland, and they later moved to the place 4 1/2 miles east of Clinton, known as the John Datweiler home. A year ago they moved to Clinton and have an attractive home on South 3rd street. She had been a member of the Christian church for years, and ws interested in all the departments and activities of the denomination. She possessed the kindest heart and her neighbors and friends loved her so, She could always be counted upon in the community to take a part in every good work with a ready hand and heart. Her life was one of helpfulness. Her influence was ever for righteousness. She was a favorite member of the Homemakers' Club, always performing the tasks assigned her with ease, and manifested the same ability common to her elsewhere. Her true self shown best and brightest in the home circle and here after all, is what counts the most in the life of the woman, for it is her influence that makes life outside what it is. Our hearts go out to the three beautiful daughters, who are just in the happy time of girlhood and blossoming womanhood. On them the blow falls hardest. Their home will never be the same. No mother heart will hear their joys and sorrows. Altho bereft they are old enough to forever hold in their lives the happy memories and wise council of one of the best women, who ever lived and they and Horace will follow the paths of righteousness in order to some day go home to her and Christ, she loved and followed. The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. A. N. Lindsey after which the body was laid in Englewood. - Died in Kansas City: Her many friends in Clinton and vicinity learned with profound grief Saturday of the death in Kansas City at 3 o'clock Saturday morning of Mrs. J.C. Datweiler. She passed away at Wesley hospital following a severe operation. The remains were brought to Clinton on Saturday, arriving here at noon and were conveyed to her home on North Third street. The funeral service will be at the Christian Church on Sunday afternoon. Deceased is survived by her loving husband and four children, who will have the tenderest sympathy of all in this time of dark bereavement. She was born in New Castle, Ind., in December 1869, and was consequently 49 years of age.

Born January 22, 1920 in Creighton, he was raised in Clinton, the son of James D. and M. Alene Crawford Daugherty. Besides his parents, his sister, Margaret, predeceased him in 1941. In his retirement years, Chief Daugherty enjoyed reunions for the USS Black Hawk, reminiscing with his shipmates about their experiences during the war years. One story he told was of sleeping on the deck topside. The ship didn't have bunks for the crew so they slept anywhere except the Quarter Deck, rolling up and stashing their bedrolls during the day. If they blew tubes during the night (blew soot out of the smoke stacks with steam jets), then anyone who had slept near the stacks looked like they had been cleaning firesides wire brushing the inside of the boilers). He said they quickly learned where not to sleep. He is survived by his wife Barbara; daughter Ann Beckham and son-in-law Gregory Beckham, South Riding, Virginia; granddaughter Catherine Hall, Charlotte, North Carolina; two grandsons Thomas and Jon Beckham, Atlanta, Georgia; sister Betty Lou Williams; brothers Joseph, James Lewis and Robert Daugherty, Clinton, and nephews and nieces.
