DEMPSEY, Eliza Ann CURD
b: Nov 10 1841, Louisville, KY
d: 1937, S of Brownington, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Maplewood Cemetery, Osage Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Feb 1937 - Mrs. E. A. Dempsey, one mile south of Brownington, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. D. Reese, in Brownington at 2:40 a.m. Monday, slipping into Eternity with the same serenity and calm that marked her long earthly journey. Her body was weary after almost a century spent traveling her life's highway, but the light of her spirit was undimmed, every faculty was alert and her love for God's children strong. Mrs. Dempsey was a diminutive person, never tipping the scales at quite a hundred pounds, yet possessed of a force and firmness that made her life a success. She was a wonderful mother, tempering her strict adherence to principle with gentle love that endeared her children to her and taught them honor, truth and happiness in living. she had a buoyancy of spirit that spread gladness about her for she had learned that art of cheerful living, the futility of worry. Indeed, this was the secret of her length of years, so her children feel. Eliza A. Curd was born November 10, 1841, at Louisville, Ky., daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. John Wesley Curd, both Kentuckians, who came to Missouri when Eliza was ten. They first lived at Germantown, then moved north of Mt. Zion, where the mother later died and the father then moved to a farm east of Brownington. December 6, 1886, Eliza Curd and James A. Dempsey were united in marriage and made their home nearby on a farm south of Brownington. There their children were born and reared and there her husband preceded her in death 14 years ago. Since Mr. Dempsey's death, she had made her home with her children, going for long visits to each of them in turn, but always preferring to be where there were children about, for she loved little folks, and their laughter and problems were a great pleasure to her, for with the wisdom of age she had learned tolerance and never read harm into anything they did. she had 24 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, the last little boy coming just two weeks before her death. Mrs. Dempsey led an active life, energy filled, loving her garden and working in it whenever she could. She never felt her children had outgrown her authority and usually "bossed" the jobs they undertook. She loved to sew and put real artistry into her quilt making, piecing 12 wedding ring patterns for her grandchildren as well as many others. She also did much quilting on her prettiest ones, being very particular of each stitch. she found time for reading and enjoyed stories, even following a serial shortly before she closed her eyes for her final rest. Mrs. Dempsey loved company and liked to visit and was the first one in the car when it was ready to go. With her fine memory, clear mind and joyousness in life she was excellent company, an ever welcome guest. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church. she is survived by her son, Claud Dempsey of Osceola, and four daughters, Mrs. F. M. Sands of Warsaw, Mrs. R. L. Denzler and Mrs. W. D. Reese of near Brownington and Mrs. Rue Baughman, Fresno, Cal.; her other child died in 1926. One sister, Mrs. Ella Jackson of Brownington also survives and the children above mentioned of the third, fourth and fifth generations. The funeral services were Wednesday at the R. L. Denzler home near Brownington.

d: Feb 8 2000, Red Bud, IL
bur:
Ladue Cemetery, Davis Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, MO

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Feb 11 2000 - Ruth Agnes (Grinage) Denison was born at Glasco, Kansas, on January 4, 1905. Her parents were William and Lucritia (Colton) Grinage. She had a younger brother Harold, and a younger sister Lucy. All preceded her in death. Grandma and her family lived in the country and in town at different times in her life. She attended one-room schools until high school, when she and her brother drove to town and boarded with a family until going home for the weekends. Grandma took Normal Training in high school to be a teacher. However, when she graduated there were too many teachers and not enough jobs locally. She close to stay at home with her parents, rather than seek a job farther away. Grandma wrote short stories and had some of them published in newspapers and magazines. One story was published in the Missouri Ruralist, a farm magazine read by my future grandpa, Paul Denison. He was healing up from a broken leg and had lots of time to read and write. He wrote to the editors of the magazine and asked about the author. They responded with the information and mentioned that she was single! He wrote to her, she wrote back and a correspondence began. After visiting her a few times, they got married on September 11, 1944, in a minister's study with his wife as witness. Grandma began married life at age 39 on a farm near Clinton. Her mother-in-law shared their home for nine years until her death. Her first child was Mark Evan Denison, born April 22, 1947. Three years later Rosemary Frances Denison was born on April 15, 1950. Some of Grandma's daily chores were hard because she had no electricity until 1964. She used a wood cook stove, a kerosene cook stove, a washboard, a wringer washer, ironed with a sad iron heated on the wood stove. Later, she used an iron heated with white gas. Grandma sewed most of her family's clothes on a treadle sewing machine. She made lots of quilts. She raised chickens, sold fryers, eggs, milk and cream. She canned food and froze food to put in the locker in Clinton. In 1959, she started working as co-janitor of Davis R-12 School where her kids went. Paul drove a bus. In 1970, Grandma published a story in Capper's Weekly, a newspaper distributed nationwide. The local newspaper convinced her to let The Printery in Clinton print in the paperback. 100 copies! She sold a few, but didn't advertise them very well. Apparently she destroyed all remaining copies without telling her family. One copy was kept. On September 19, 1970, Mark married Patricia Otersen. Tawnya Sue was born on March 8, 1973. She was the first grandchild! Next came Pamela Faye on October 22, 1975. On May 23, 1981, Michael Bradley was born. Grandpa got sick with congestive heart failure and died six weeks later on July 10, 1975. Rosemary married Carl Peterman on May 14, 1977, Suzanne Leigh was born on January 27, 1987. After Grandma saw a man stealing her grandson's bicycle, other items were found missing. Her family decided it was time to move to town. She moved to senior citizens' housing in 1993. After it became difficult for her to care for herself, she moved to Illinois to live with her son Mark, in 1997. After nine months, she moved to a nearby care center. She lived there until her death on February 8, 2000. She was 95-years-old. Funeral services were held at the LaDue Christian Church on Saturday, February 12. Burial was in the LaDue Cemetery.

To this union one child was born, May 31, 1931, a babe of 6 weeks at the time of her death. She was a devout Christian, an outstanding one in character and disposition, among those of near her age, and although never strong in body, was noted for her patience and cheerfulness among all who knew her. Her home life was of short duration, but long enough for her to endear herself to her husband, new relatives and friends beyond the average, and all because of her sweet Christian character. In spite of her youth she could say with St. Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." She has gone to be with her Heavenly Father, and although our loss is His gain, we shall miss her greatly. Her life in its godliness was an example we all may follow until we too go the way of all the earth and await His coming in that glorious day when we shall again be reunited for eternity. She leaves to mourn her departure: her husband, Loyd Edgar Dickey, her son, Loyd Vernon, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
