DILLON, Catherine CLARY
b: May 15 1857, near Maple Park, Kane Co, IL
d: Jan 15 1933, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery DA-DY, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Another mother has been taken into the shelter of the fold, for Sunday night, at 9:20, the spirit of Mrs. John Dillon was released from earthly life. She had been bedfast for ten days, but the past year she had been very frail. All possible was done to save the life of this gentle mother, by her daughter, Miss Margaret Dillon and daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Dillon, both nurses, and other relatives, but to no avail. Catherine Clary was born May 15, 1857, at Maple Park, Kane county, Ill. There she grew to young womanhood, born a quarter of a mile from the man whom she was later to marry. The childhood comradeship grew into love, and November 4, 1884, Miss Clary became the wife of John Dillon, capable young farmer. They were wed in Maple Grove, but soon came to Clarion, Iowa, where they made their home on a farm for ten years. The companionship of Mr. and Mrs. Dillon was beautiful but as years passed, a tender and subdued sweetness replaced the warmer ardor of youth. She was a woman truly made to keep a home, ruling her household with a firm hand, keeping it immaculate, and above all, with the great gold of mother love stored in her. The two had four children; a son died when eight years old, but the other three Miss Margaret a nurse; Gus in the post office, and John an electrician for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, have fulfilled the expectations of their parents, grown into splendid men and women, have carried and will carry, the teachings of a pure mother and good father. They moved to Missouri in 1895, and lived on a farm six and a half miles southeast of Clinton, then 13 years ago moved to 800 North Second street, which has been their home since. Wherever the home was made, Mrs. Dillon was sure to become a beloved neighbor, for next to her husband, whom she placed first ever, and then her family, there came the neighbors, and her loving kindness to them afforded much pleasure. She was always busy, not one to go out of her home often, but alert and kept up with the latest news up to the latter days when her eyesight grew dim. She found peace and contentment in her home, and was happy and cheerful. A beautiful thing in this home was the devotion between the mother and only daughter. Miss Margaret would be away or nursing and when she returned, the mother's heart was filled with happiness. But it is to the husband who has been so near these 48 years, that the sorrow has come and no matter how full those years have been the breaking of this tie brings a pathos that fills the heart with sympathy. Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Dillon had remained a faithful member of the Catholic church, and in that church the last funeral rites were conducted Tuesday morning. Interment was in Englewood Cemetery. Mrs. Dillon's cup of happiness was full, when the son John Dillon and his wife, from Pittsburg, Pa., came to the Dillon home Christmas, accompanied by their son Pat, who was the idol of his grandmother's heart. He returned but Mr. and Mrs. Dillon remained. The other sisters, Mrs. John Sullivan of Elburn, Ill., and Miss Julia Clary of Rochelle, Ill., have been here to assist in caring for Mrs. Dillon, also her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Esser of Kansas City, and Mrs. Frank Weess, Clinton.

Clinton MO - J. J. Dillon died at his home, 800 North Second street at 10:45 a.m. Sunday, following a brief illness of three days which climaxed several years of declining health, first noticed since the death of his wife in 1933. Friday he was able to have dinner with his family but death had marked him and his passing on the Sabbath was like his life, peaceful and serene. John James Dillon was born April 16, 1857, at Maple Park, DeKalb, County, Ill. There he grew to manhood, on their farm and attended the local schools. In 1884 he was married to Miss Catherine Cleary of Maple Park and soon after they moved to near Clarion, Iowa, to establish their new home. There their children were born, Patrick, deceased in childhood; John, of Pittsburg, Penn.; Miss Margaret and Gus Dillon of the home in Clinton. In 1896 Mr. and Mrs. Dillon and their family moved to a farm six miles south of Clinton, where Mr. Dillon farmed successfully until January 1919, when he moved to Clinton. For some years, Mr. Dillon worked with his team for the city, then he devoted his lessened energies to his home, where a fine garden always rewarded his efforts and where his family claimed his most devoted attention, for his home was truly his castle and it was there he was happiest. He never recovered from his grief over the loss of his wife who was called home in January, four years ago. Mr. Dillon, reared in the Catholic faith, was a member of the Holy Rosary church, where he was regular in attendance until recent years when his strength began to fail. Mr. Dillon and his pure bred Boston Bull dog, who was his constant companion and diversion, were a familiar pair in the neighborhood where they took daily walks, visiting with the children with whom they were great favorites and for whom Mr. Dillon always had a kind word or act of kindness. Mr. Dillon always had a great many pets, making friends of them all, his horses included. He was a good man, kind, gentle, considerate. Besides his children to mourn his loss is an only grandson, Patrick Dillon of Pittsburg, Penn.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Esser, Kansas City; Mrs. frank Weess, Clinton; four brothers, Tom, Kearney, Neb.; Dan, Pat and Henry, Belmond, Iowa. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Holy Rosary church. Consalus and Peck were in charge. The body was laid to rest in Englewood.

Clinton MO - Death has again entered Calhoun and taken one of the loveliest and the best. Mildred A. Dillon was born in Virginia in 1825 and came to Missouri when she was 12 and was raised three miles north of town. After a lingering illness of three or four months, God in his infinite wisdom and love sent his bright angels on the night of Dec. 15 and took the weary traveler home. Brokenhearted husband, son and daughter, weep no. She has gone where sickness, sorrow and farewells are unknown. Mrs. Dillon was a woman above the average, with a pleasant word and smile for everybody and she bore her long suffering without a murmur. She was buried in the Askins graveyard December 17.

DILTS, J. W.
b: abt 1871
d: Sep 6 1938, Calhoun, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO - Mr. Dilts, Calhoun's photographer for about a quarter of a century, died about 7:30 a.m. September 6, 1938, at his rooms behind his shop on the north side of the square. He had been ill some time with a serious organic disease, but was cared for by friends, Mike Edwards and family, who live nearby. Mr. Dilts would have been 68 years old this fall. Throughout life he was afflicted with deafness but had developed a fine adeptness for lip reading and though speech was difficult he would utter words of encouragement to his patrons when they especially pleased him when before the camera. He was known over wide territory for the excellency of his finished work; also out-of-door photography; as his friends and patrons of Calhoun went out into the world, they sent back films to develop, and successfully recommended him to their friends. For a number of years Mr. Dilts lived with his mother in Calhoun, but since her death, had lived alone. During his youth he worked in one of the small pottery shops at Calhoun, becoming an expert turner, molding the clay into various shapes. As is the clay molded into different shapes, so are lives molded daily, and Mr. Dilts kept an interest in humanity and its vanities and sentiments, striving for perfection in each piece of finished work.

The old Dodge home was one of the brightest and sweetest in Clinton; it was on the corner 2d and Gr. River, where Dr. Powers now has his handsome home. Mr. Dodge died 15 years ago, since which time Mrs. Dodge has made her home with her children. She had two brothers to live past 90, one of them Rev. James DeLaVergne, who came as a missionary to Clinton at the close of the war, and so lovingly remembered by all residents of that day. She was the youngest of her father's family and the last to depart. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church for 60 years. She let her light shine as only a woman good and true and born of the faith can. She greeted her friends always with a smile and their interests were always hers. The funeral services were conducted at the home of A. C. Avery on South Third street, Wednesday. The casket was half covered with beautiful lilies and rare roses. The remains were laid in Englewood beside her husband.

Clinton MO, Mar 1922 - Elizabeth, daughter of Uncle Neddie and Aunt Kitty Delozier, was born near Gerster, Mo., Jan. 28, 1845, and died March 3, 1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Miers, in Calhoun, Mo., aged 77 years, 1 month and 3 days. All her childhood and early girlhood was spent at the old home near Gerster, Mo., and just at the breaking out of the Civil War and at the early age of 16 she was married Dec. 26, 1861, to Thos. Milton Dodson. The young husband being called to service in a short time after their marriage she spent the three years of the war in the home of her brother, James Delozier, of Leesville, waiting patiently and prayerfully for the coming of her soldier husband and together they spent 51 years of blissful and happy wedded life, the husband passing to his reward in July 1912. To this happy union twelve children were given, all of whom are left to mourn this grand old Puritan mother. The children are: Mrs. Frank Duvall, Coal, Mo.; Mrs. Chas. Miers, Calhoun, Mo.; Mrs. John Sanders and Mrs. Geo. Sanders, Deepwater, Mo.; Mrs. Virgil Dunning, Ohio P.O.; Francis, Commerce, Okla.; Ben and Griff, Neck City, Mo.; Thomas and Karry, Deepwater, Mo.; Henry and Walter, Ohio P.O. Besides these children there are 48 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers - jams and Crum Delozier, and one sister, Mrs. Tize Jacobs, Oklahoma; one brother, Beck Delozier, and one sister, Mrs. Ann Wilson, of Leesville, Mo. She was converted and joined the Tebo Baptist church some 30 years ago, later removing her membership to Pleasant Valley Baptist church, where she remained a faithful member until her death. Grandma Dodson, like all pioneer mothers, saw a great deal of the seamy side of life, but her greatest joy was in administering to the needs of her family and giving them the care and guidance that only a mother of her type can give and her family of honorable, upright men and women, stand as a monument to her untiring and faithful council. Children grieve not, for this dear one but so live that you may join her when it comes your time to leave this old world, for you know that had been her prayer all your lives and only think how happy your mother is today to be able to join hands with the dear companion she has so deeply mourned, and think of her joy at having her family in an unbroken circle. All her children were present for the funeral except one son who was confined to his bed with the flu. The funeral services were held at the Brownington Baptist church, March 6, 1922, after which she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Maplewood cemetery.

Clinton MO - J. W. Dodson died Monday afternoon at Hot Springs, Ark., where he had been taking the hot baths since about five weeks ago. His wife had been with him constantly and his stepdaughter, Mrs. Fred Fewell of Clinton, and sisters, Mrs. Ona Maupin and Mrs. Pearl Payne, of Kansas City, had been with him since Friday. His death came unexpectedly; apparently he had improved in health, and was to have returned to his home Tuesday. The deceased had lived the most of his life in Henry county, his earlier years at Calhoun, where he had a grocery store. Since 12 years of age, he had been in a store. Mr. Dodson left Calhoun about nine years ago, and went to Springfield, Mo., where he remained two years, then came to Clinton and was employed in the Martinville store. For the past three years he had been in the grocery store at Deepwater. No words of complaint were ever heard from Mr. Dodson. If he had troubles or was ill in body, no one ever knew it. The genial proprietor of the store was always "All right", with a joke and a smile for all, and a witty retort to bring laughter. The Dodson store has been a favorite trading place. His dealings were always honest, and business men and salesmen who were associated with him, knew him as a keen business man, one whom they delighted to work with. Mr. Dodson was married to Mrs. Nora Washburn about 33 years ago. He leaves her, a loved, stepdaughter, Mrs. Fred Fewell, and his two sisters, in addition to his innumerable friends. The body was brought to Clinton on the noon train Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday (today) at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fewel, 716 East Green Street.
