bur: Pleasant Mound Cemetery, Osceola Twp, St. Clair Co, MO
arr:

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Oct 24 2003 - Avid gardener, pecan hunter, daughter, dedicated mother and friend, she was born Mary Marcia Ambrose on September 10, 1925, as an only child to Tom and Adel (Ehlen) Ambrose in Kansas City. She fell asleep in death September 27, 2003. Marcia lived her early years in Kansas City and Miller County. In the early 1930s, the young Ambrose family had a Midwest-to-California dust bowl trek with highlights including orange-blossom scented air, horses and her aunt's cattle ranch. Her father would long tell stories of Marcia being one of the ranch hand's favorite lasso targets. Returning to Missouri she was enrolled in the Iberia Academy from which she was graduated and Drury School of Business in Kansas City. Working most of her career for the federal government she traveled to Berlin, Germany, at the end of World War Ii with the military occupation forces as a civilian contractor from 1946-1948. Being there during the blockade she remembered watching the famous "candy drops" from American aircraft bringing in supplies. This is where she met and married her husband William J. Esderts in 1948. From this union came two daughters, Yvonne and Joyce. The family moved with the military for a few years. Coming back to Missouri as a single mother she settled her children with her parents on their farm between Lowry City and Osceola. She worked in Kansas City for various federal agencies such as Social Security, EPA and the Corps of Engineers coming home to the farm every weekend for many years to spend as much time as possible with her daughters. She retired in 1980 to share a home with her mother in Clinton until Adel's death in 1989. Together they enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning, as well as traveling to see children and grandchildren. Marcia spent many volunteer hours with the Bloodmobile, reading with elementary students at the Catholic School, secretary to the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Church of the Brethren outside of Osceola. The week before her death she traveled to the Denver area for her only granddaughter's wedding. She enjoyed herself immensley while spending time with all of her grandchildren and attending the wedding. Following a short respiratory crisis she passed away peacefully with both daughters and son-in-law, Richard, at her side. Marcia is survived by daughter Yvonne, her husband Richard Gilstrap and their children Christopher and wife Heather and Amy and husband Gabriel Guy, all of Denver, Colorado area, and daughter Joyce, her husband Bill Rupp and their sons Thomas and Michael from Orcas Island, Washington. EVANS, Edverda "Gyp" McCARTY ALLISON
b: Dec 27 1860, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO
d: Aug 12 1928, Carthage, Jasper Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery EA-FU, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Aug 1928 - Mrs. O. D. Evans died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph D. Cline, at Carthage, Sunday night, at 11:30, after an illness of several weeks with malarial fever and complications. She had been living in Carthage since the spring of 1927, moving there with her daughter, when Mr. Cline went into the furniture business there. Mrs. Evans had been homesick for Clinton and her old friends as here she had lived many years. She was one of those delightful women of the old south, of gentle spirit and kindly manner, who had a wide circle of friends. She was devoted to her home and her church and gave herself to every good work. Under her sweet spirit the Ladies' Aid Society was led many years during the time of raising funds for the new Presbyterian church. They cooked, baked, sewed and quilted to help raise the needed money. No task was too hard for her to do for her beloved church. It was a happy, smiling service. Well do we remember her supervising the various activities that were necessary to make the funds these dear good ladies had pledged for their church building. Edverda McCarty or "Gyp" as she was known to relatives and close friends, was born in Kansas City, Mo., on the corner of Ninth and Harrison street, December 27, 1860. Her father, Edward C. McCarty, was cashier and treasurer of one of the two banks that were in Kansas City at that time. She was a pretty little black-eyed baby, surrounded with every seeming luxury. Her parents were Virginians, and had settled a number of years before in Saline county, near Arrow Rock, where Ruth McCarty, now Mrs. E. A. Allison, the oldest daughter was born April 7, 1844. Their father had vision of what a wonderful center of population Kansas City was to become and had planned to make his home there. He was from the old South, but a staunch believer in the Union. State after state seceded during those black days of Civil war. He still stood by the Union until his mother state, Virginia seceded, then his sympathies went with the great Southland, still loving his country and his friends of the North. Those were troublesome days. After the great war was started the young Virginia banker's life was threatened, also that of his family. Not by the real Union people who fought squarely, but by the outlaws in Kansas that were invading Kansas City. He fled to Independence, and his wife and their children, left under the care of "Uncle Jim," the faithful old slave, who was really free as he was never bound by his good master. They had to leave their beautiful home with only one change of clothing in company of the faithful old darky, who drove the family carriage. The master met them in Independence and they drove to Arrow Rock to the home of Mrs. McCarty's father, Judge Bernis Brown. The old darky returned to Kansas City, but the only thing he managed to save for the white folks were a few family portraits. All the rest were lost. They decided to again brave Kansas City, and returned in 1863, but were forced to leave under the historical "Order No. 11". Some of the most valuable property in Kansas City in the central business district belonged to the McCarty's, but they never could get it as their deeds were lost during the war and the public records destroyed. After their return to Saline county, Ruth married E. Allison, May 28, 1868. Their honeymoon was spent on a Missouri river steamer and they returned and spent that summer in the famous old Arrow Rock tavern. Mr. Allison clerked in the store until fall and came to Clinton. They first lived in a cottage owned by Dr. Britts, where the Catholic Academy now stands. He first went into the grocery business and later into the dry goods business, and was a merchant here for many years. Her parents and brothers came to this county a little later and bringing with them little Gyp. They first lived on what is now the Judge Calvird farm, north of Clinton. About 50 years ago her father bought the farm where the McCartys still live. Little Gyp married O. D. Evans about 38 years ago and lived on a farm near the parental home until their children were old enough for high school and they moved to Clinton, and this was her home until the last years. Mr. Evans died five years ago. Their two children survive - Mrs. Ralph Cline of Carthage; and William Evans, northwest of Clinton. There are four grandchildren. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. E. Allison, Clinton; Miss Nannie McCarty, who lives with her two brothers, Charles and James, at the family home, northwest of Clinton, and Patrick Henry, in Nevada. Her body was brought to Clinton, Tuesday and taken to the Presbyterian church where the funeral services were conducted. Her body was laid beside her husband in Englewood.

Clinton MO, May 1925 - Mrs. Monk Evans died at her home on East Jefferson street at 11:24 a.m., May 14th, after an illness of four months. January 17th she suffered a stroke of paralysis and apoplexy and during that time she never regained her former strength. She got better for a few days and was able to be up when the second stroke came. A trained nurse was at her bedside all these weeks, nearly constantly. Her loved ones and skilled physicians did all within their power to prolong her stay, but God knew best and took her home. The night before she died heaven was revealed to her and she called her loved ones and said, "It is such a beautiful place, I wish you could all see it." Mary Lydia Allison was born in Clinton July 6th, 1873. She spent all of her life in Clinton. She was a musician of unusual talent, which she developed by attending the old Baird College in this city. Oct. 1897 she married Allie Campbell, who died in 1908. Two children were born to this union - Allison and Mrs. Helen Campbell, both of whom survive. May 2, 1912, she married Monk H. Evans and their's has been a happy union. He is left to mourn her departure. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. E. Allison; two sisters - Mrs. Anna Elsner of Clinton, and Mrs. J. C. Wyatt, of Carthage; also one brother, Charles Allison, of Los Angeles, Calif. Her education was begun in the public schools and completed at Baird College. Her's was a happy contented girlhood surrounded by ease and luxury. Early in life she developed excellent traits of character, which have remained through life. She was gentle, proficient and untiring in her ministrations to her family and to many less fortunate, loyal to her friends, faithful in a marked degree to the organizations to which she belonged, notably the Baptist church, in order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the confederacy. She was always ready to serve the community and has spent much of her time in so using her splendid musical ability. When 16 years of age she united with the Baptist church under the ministry of the beloved Dr. Skillman and from the age of 18 she had been active by living for it, much of the time being organist, for the last five years rarely missing a service until her illness. She will be sorely missed by this congregation. From her first stroke of paralysis she worried for fear she never could play for the church again. As a neighbor we knew and loved her best. She seldom visited, but if anyone in the neighborhood or among her friends became ill, immediately she thought of the most kind and helpful things to do. All others might forget, but she always remembered and even in her busy life found time to do those things that make earth's pathway less rough to travel and comforts your heart because you know somebody still cares. She was queen of her own home and worked unceasingly for her loved ones. She was known the city over for her culinary skill, and nothing was too hard for her to do. She comes of one of the oldest and most aristocratic families of Missouri, her father being the late Capt. E. Allison, and her mother was Ruth McCarty before her marriage. During her girlhood, she lived in the beautiful brick mansion at the corner of Second and Jefferson streets, that was recently rebuilt by the VanCleaves. Her great concern during her last illness was her children, whom she worshipped. Only the Comforter can heal the broken hearts of her devoted husband and children, but they know she is with Jesus. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the M. E. Church, South. Interment in Englewood.
