FRANCIS, Jesse Sherman
b: Apr 7 1889, Maries Co, MO
d: May 12 1926, Clinton, Henry Co, MO

bur:
Englewood Cemetery EA-FU, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Jesse Sherman Francis was born in Maries county, Mo., April 7, 1889, and departed this life at his late home, 408 E. Franklin street, Clinton, Mo., at 12:55 a.m., Wednesday, May 12, 1926, at the age of 37 years, 12 months and 5 days. When he was quite young, the family returned to Osage county, Mo., for a few years, coming then to Montrose, Mo., from which place they moved to Clinton in 1901. He received his education in the Clinton public schools. On March 9, 1914, he was married in Montrose, Mo., to Miss Essie Thomas, who together with the little daughter, Nadine, age 6, and the little son, George Robert, age 4, survive. He had been employed at the City Light Plant for the past four years, and was well liked by all his fellow workers. During these last years in the City's service, his health had been gradually failing, although he never complained. On Monday morning, April 12, he went to work as usual, although really not able to go, and about 9:30, returned home and had his family physician called, who advised him to go to bed, as his fever was so high. for several mornings of that week he would insist on getting up, but could not stay up long. Not until the following Saturday did pneumonia develop. All that loving hands, the skill of several of the best physicians, a trained nurse and most valiant fight for life, on his part, could not lengthen his stay on earth. Early Tuesday morning, coming out of a night of stupor, he looked up at his wife and asked, "Have they given me up?" and said, "I am ready to go." He said he wanted to tell all good bye and called for Rev. Lindsey, who arrived in a short time. He wanted to make the good confession and in the presence of his little children and several other members of the family, he made the good confession and took his first and last communion with his pastor and his wife. Many were the restless days and sleepless nights and during all of these and all the delirium never a vile word passed his lips, demonstrating the purity of mind and heart, and thus calling forth only praise from his faithful nurse. About 5 p.m. Tuesday, he was taken with a smothering spell and under the influence of medicine, became quiet and went to sleep about 9, passing peacefully away at 12:55 a.m. The funeral was conducted on Thursday, after which the remains were conveyed to Englewood and laid beneath a wealth of beautiful flowers. Thus from our midst has gone a kind and considerate neighbor, a devoted husband and a father who idolized his children. He is survived by an aged father, T. B. Francis, and five brothers, Will, Joe and Charles of Clinton, Taylor of Appleton City, and Allen of Wichita, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Geckeler and Mrs. J. Kurtz, both of Kansas City, Mo.; one half brother, T. J. Howard of Ravenden springs, Ark., and one half sister, Mrs. S. B. Pointer, of Appleton City; one half sister and the mother having preceded him to the better world. Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. Emma Geckeler, Kansas City; Mrs. Bettie Pointer and Taylor Francis and family of Appleton City; Charles and Lewis Francis and little son of Belle, Mo.; Ira Francis of Byron, Mo., and Tom Foster and wife of Moberly, Mo.

FRANCISCO, Matilda DICKINSON
b: Mar 22 1894, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
d: Jul 9 1923

bur: Jul 11 1923
Englewood Cemetery EA-FU, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Jul 1923 - Mrs. Matilda Francisco died at the home of her parents, Congressman and Mrs. C. C. Dickinson, Monday morning at 10:30. She had been in poor health for several years, and bedfast for three weeks before her death. She was born March 22, 1894, at the home place on the corner of Jefferson and 2nd streets. There she grew to womanhood, graduating from the Clinton high school. she attended the University of Missouri part of one year, but had to quit on account of poor health. She married William Francisco, December, 1915. One son was given this union, William Francisco, Jr., who is six years old. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dickinson; one brother, Seddon; and three sisters - Mrs. Uel Lamkin, of Maryville, Mo., who was with her husband in San Francisco, California, attending the National Educational Association Convention at the time of her sister's death; Miss Peyton Dickinson, at home; Miss Lelia, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who was in New York at the time of her sister's death. Matilda was a young woman of unusual winsomeness. She ever put her own self behind and thought of the happiness of her relatives and friends. From the time she was a tiny tot until her death, she was loved by all who knew her. She loved life and would have liked to live, but there was never a murmur nor a complaint when she knew she was going. She simply made her plans to go, asking that her most cherished earthly possession, little William, be raised by her parents. She was sorry to leave him motherless, but knew he was in good hands. Hers was a courageous life. No matter what trouble came to her she kept it, and gave to her friends and loved ones only sunshine. She always remembered to do the little kindnesses that make life so worth while. There was never a friend or a neighbor ill, but what she would remember them with a cheery visit and with something dainty to tempt the invalid's appetite. Rev. A. N. Lindsey had charge of the funeral services, which were held at the home of her parents, on South 2nd street, Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Englewood.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Mar 31 2005 - Violet Florence Freeman was born to John and Ruth May Price on March 3, 1910, outside Osceola. She died March 12, 2005, at Clinton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. violet's husband, A. R. "Gus" Freeman; her parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Thomas R. Freeman (and Luann) of North Oaks, Minnesota, Charles W. Freeman (and Shirley) of Alexandria, Virginia; three sisters, Elsie Drake, West Plains, Leona Harper, West Plains, Janelle Dunnum, Rancho Mirage, California; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren (and one expected in April). The second oldest daughter in a family of nine, Violet attended schools in St. Clair County. She moved to Clinton and married Gus Freeman August 20, 1931. While rearing their two sons, Violet worked with Gus at Byrum and Freeman Drugs and Sporting Goods Store. During their 26 years of business, she did a variety of tasks but her efforts were focused on women's cosmetics. Although much of her time was involved in helping at the drug store, she had a unique interest and eye for antiques. She started collecting antiques early - much before it became so popular. She could spot a treasure in a pile of junk. Later she privately bought and sold antiques on a small scale. As antiques became more expensive, she turned to collecting items such as dolls and other small items. She had great fun visiting garage sales, auctions and flea markets around town. She had an amazing talent for predicting the next popular collectible. Violet loved the game of bridge. After a number of years, she developed into a highly skilled and respected player of duplicate bridge. She enjoyed the companionship of the other ladies as well as the competitiveness of the game. As an excellent cook, Violet's delicious pies, yeast breads and cinnamon rolls were among her hallmarks. Family gatherings were always a feast. She insisted that her young grandchildren be seated along side the adults. Of course, the meal was not complete without the proper table presentation featuring fine china, silver, linens, flowers and candles. In general, Violet loved food. Sometimes she would reflect on a food preference by posing the question, "Is there anything better than a baked potato?" Throughout life, Violet demonstrated a warm, friendly, outgoing personality. She always encouraged others to do their best and persevere. She did not complain nor did she allow her sons to dwell on the negative without a corrective nudge. A loving wife and mother, her devotion and interest in her family never wavered. Even when her son's mischievous acts and accidents tested her limits, she demonstrated patience and a calm demeanor. As her sons grew older, she followed their careers and accomplishments. Even though they lived far distances, she never made them feel guilty. Being with extended family at the lake cottage in Minnesota, Violet loved watching the grandchildren play and swim in the lake. As they grew, she shared her craft of baking as well as her skill of cleaning fish. When Violet was faced with giving up her home and relinquishing her total independent lifestyle, she continued to be positive and handled the transition with the same kind of grace she demonstrated during other major life changes. At the age of 93, she once again showed her sons that she still possessed that strong independent spirit and keen business ability by marketing her own cherished automobile and other important possessions. Violet did not have a cell phone, internet account, I-Pod, or any of the trappings of a technological age. However, she remained fully engaged in the community and world in which she lived. At age 95, she remained tolerant, patient and connected with people. She loved to laugh, was slow to anger, did things in moderation and loved being around family and friends. In admiration of her long and successful life, her family says "Well done, Mom." Memorial services were held Friday, March 18, at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery.

He lived on the home place where he died for the past 41 years. It was a beautiful stock farm of more than a thousand acres. He loved the beautiful Henry county hills and the sleek cattle of his herds. His home had the typical hospitality of the Southland. Bro. French was a good husband, a true father, a kind and obliging neighbor. He was our friend 7 days in the week. We have dined at his table and slept in his bed, shared his generous hospitality. He was loved by all. He was married to Miss Mary Reed in 1872. To this union one son was born, C. W. French, who lived near the old home farm. His first wife died in 1878. Along middle life he made a profession of religion but never united with any church. He told us with his own mouth that he had made peace with his God. He was willing and ready to go at any time. By faith he was a Baptist. He had often said that the way was clear, there was nothing in the way, he had lived a life that he was not afraid to die. The funeral services were at Parks Chapel, Monday afternoon. His body laid in the lot he recently purchased, as he was preparing for his burial.

He doctored with home physicians; several seeks ago went to Wagoner, I.T. to try the mineral waters, and then to a specialist in Kansas City but all to no avail. Monday he said he felt much better and attended to his business duties until almost noon when he complained of feeling worse and fell to the floor. His wife ran to him but was unable to get him to get up so called her father A. C. Avery. They summoned Drs. Jennings and Haire but before they arrived he had breathed his last. Mr. Freund was born in Pennsylvania August 12, 1860 and became a member of the Lutheran church. His parents both died when he was about 11. His first wife died a number of years ago, leaving a daughter, Miss Livinia, who was visiting relatives in Shreveport, La., at the time of her father's death. About four years ago, he married Mrs. Evelyn Avery Joseph, youngest daughter of A. C. Avery and wife and to this union a baby son was born 15 months ago and became the delight of the father's life. Mr. Freund has been with the Emerson & Marlow Company about 12 years and has been located in Clinton six years as manager of the Clinton Produce Company. He had a bright cheery temperament, full of love and kindness and in his six years in Clinton, we have never heard one person say a word against him. He was a member of the K.P.'s, W.O.W. and Royal Arcanium of Chicago.

Clinton MO - In Memory of Jonathan Friend - He was born; he is dead! How unalterable are these two great truths. Jonathan Friend was born in Virginia September 4, 1813; married Mary A. Dean January 6, 1836; emigrated to Illinois for several years; moved to Ionia, Missouri; thence to Henry County in 1870, where he spent the rest of his life, which closed Sunday morning, May 8, 1892. He was 88?. He united with the M. E. church in early manhood. His wife preceded him to the better world December 9, 1899, and was born in 1818 and professed religion at an early age. They had nine children, all living but one boy who died in infancy; two daughters living in Ionia; a son in the Indian territory and the rest of the children in Henry County. After his companion died, Mr. Friend was never satisfied and told his children at different times that he had thought of putting an end to his life but they prevailed on him not to think of such a thing and watched and tenderly cared for him. Still he was not satisfied and at times his mind seemed affected and it is thought he was in this state when he put an end to his life by taking an overdose of laudanum at the residence of his son-in-law, Milton Garrison, where he was making his home. Prayers ascend to Heaven for blessings on those he left behind. Monday, May 9, at 3 p.m., services were held over the remains at the M.E. Church in Lewis Station by Rev. Flummer and Mr. Friend was placed in Lewis cemetery, to await the resurrection morn.

Clinton MO - Martin Friend of Brownington, who was bitten last March by a rabid dog, died last Sunday morning at 8. Married and leaves a wife and two children, one about six months old and the other six years old. At the time he was bitten, the wound was a very slight one and paid little or no attention to it but about a week prior to his death he began to develop a genuine case of hydrophobia. His sufferings for the last five or six days were agonizing in the extreme. For about 24 hours before death, the convulsions became much more frequent and he was almost continuously unconscious and it required several men to hold him and he was finally bound down to the floor. Those who witnessed his sufferings say that was a sight they never wish to see again. Dr. Russell did everything in his power for the unfortunate man.

Englewood Cemetery EA-FU, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, 1928 - At 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, the spirit of Mrs. W. H. Fryling left its earthly abode to dwell in the land of the blessed. This dear wife and mother had been in poor health the past several years, having strokes of paralysis at different times. On Wednesday, June 20, the fatal stroke came, and she was unable to talk from that time on. Her death came as though closing her eyes in sleep. The husband and children were with her constantly during her last illness, ministering to her every want, and they with physician and others who loved her, did everything possible for human hands to do to prolong her stay on earth, but God had called for her. Deceased's maiden name was Lois Combs, she being a daughter of W. H. and Elizabeth Ewing Combs, who emigrated from Clark county, Mo., to Henry county in 1851. They were among the oldest settlers in this county, residing eight miles east of Clinton, where Mrs. Fryling was born on September 19, 1862. In the year 1879, she was united in marriage with W. H. Fryling, they locating on the Combs homestead east of town, where they resided until coming to Clinton in 1917. This happy union was blessed with three children, all living to comfort the lonely companion. They are: Mrs. A. B. Munday and Mrs. E. H. Loft, both of Sedalia, and Curtis Fryling, at the home. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. C. D. Hutcherson, of Hepler, Kans., who was here for a week during Mrs. Fryling's illness, and one brother, W. H. Combs, of Gilman City, Mo.; also two grandchildren - Pauline Munday and Jack Loft. Mrs. Fryling had been a member of the Baptist church for many years. A gentle spirit has gone on, one that was kind to everybody. Her influence will be ever felt. She gave herself, on all occasions, unstintingly to her Lord, her home, her neighbors. Her home was ever open to all with its real Christian hospitality. It can be truly said that she was loved by all who knew her. The ladies of the different organizations of the church were always glad whenever a meeting was to be held in her home, as she made it so pleasant for them. She was of a quiet, unassuming nature, but so willing to help in any way. She loved flowers, and her yard and garden contained some of the most choice kind, as well as potted plants in the house. These she unselfishly shared with neighbors and friends. It can be said of her, that she has fought a good fight she has finished her course, she has kept the faith and there was laid up for her a crown of righteousness. Her numerous friends grieve with the husband and children in this time of deep sorrow. Funeral services were conducted at the home, at 320 North 3rd street, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, by her pastor, Rev. J. R. Blythe. Burial was in Englewood cemetery.

Clinton Eye, Aug 1886 - Passed Over - Saturday morning, August 21, at 10 o'clock, the spirit of P. W Fulkerson, after long years of suffering, passed over to its Maker and is at rest. He was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, in 1824. Came to this state in the fall of 1855 and located in Cass County, where he lived until the war broke out and in 1861 joined the Confederate Army, serving through the war as Captain. After the war, he came to Clinton where he has made his home ever since. He has for the past eight years been afflicted with cancer of the face, and every known remedy was tried. For four years the Eureka Springs waters were tested, but to no avail and the last two years he has been confined to his home, suffering intensely at times, until the Great Redeemer called him home. He leaves a wife, a companion who has watched and tenderly cared for him through all these years of sad afflictions, to mourn his loss, and in her bereavement, the community extends its sympathy. After the sermon at 3:30 at the Southern M.E. Church, the remains were taken charge of by the Masons and conveyed to Oak Grove for interment.
