He died December 18, 2004, at his home in Clinton at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer. He graduated from Lakin High School in Kansas in 1950 after repeating his senior year due to a motor scooter accident that resulted in a long hospitalization and rehabilitation. It was during this time Clinton decided to become a doctor. In 1953, he married Helen Cochell and to this union five children were born, Michael, twins Daniel and Melinda, Timothy and Amy. In 1956 he graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery and in 1957 young Dr. Glaspy began his practice in Clinton. During his 36-year career, ending with his retirement in 1993, he became popular for his compassionate and genuine bedside manner, not to mention his expertise at nurturing and delivering thousands of babies into this world. The latter was what he loved best and it provided him countless precious memories and proud moments. On March 12, 1983, he married Darlene Campbell, who survives of the home. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting with friends and family and he has passed these devotions on to his kids and grand kids. He loved to laugh and tell jokes and he was well known for his trademark whistling. Upon retirement, he and Darlene began to winter in Texas, creating new friendships and wonderful memories to cherish. However, Clint had a strong commitment to his community as evidenced in his motto "You don't take - you give back to your community" and he gave willingly of his time to help in many civic projects. These include building the Homestead, renovating the Dorman House and one of his favorites, playing the country doc at the Henry County Museum each Christmas as he wrote out prescriptions for candy canes. He also was an active member of First Baptist church and served on various committees there. GLASS, Freeman Harrison
b: Jul 28 1853, near Butler, Bates Co, MO
d: Mar 24 1934, Deepwater, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Fairview Twp, Henry Co, MO
Aged Deepwater Man Passes - Death came to Freeman H. Glass as a release from intense pain Saturday night at his home in Deepwater. He had been seriously ill with pneumonia and complications several weeks, and his advanced age was against his recovery. Freeman Harrison Glass was born in Bates county near butler, July 28, 1853. He was the descendant of two pioneer families who came to Missouri from Kentucky. His father was Dr. Rankin Glass and his mother, previous to her marriage, Miss Martha Dunning. Mr. Glass received an excellent education at the State Teacher college in Warrensburg, which he attended when a young man. For many years he lived in Pettis County near Sedalia and taught school. He was especially brilliant in mathematics, quick and accurate in his calculations. March 3, 1879, he was united in marriage with Miss Lura Rice, who survives him with three children - Conway, Oren, and Floyd Glass, all of Deepwater, and five grandchildren. Five other children preceded him in death. Mr. Glass came to Deepwater many years ago and operated a dray several years. As his age advanced he gave up this work and began to farm a small tract of land in Deepwater, which he planted in various crops, usually corn and pumpkins. He was a familiar sight as he trudged up and down the rows of corn behind his horse-drawn plow, carefully tending his crop, sometimes taking a minute to rest and converse with a neighbor with a surprising understanding of life and human nature. As a young man he united with a Baptist church in Pettis county, then placed his membership in the Deepwater Baptist church when he came to that town. He was a faithful Christian, always serving his Master to his utmost. As long as his health permitted he was a regular attendant at the church services, Sunday school, and B.Y.P.U., in which he took great interest and was happy to be a child of the Lord. A diligent Bible reader, he had nearly completed reading his Bible through for the fourth time. During his last illness he often stated he was ready to go to that brighter land, and tried to sing favorite old hymns. The funeral was held at the Baptist church on Sunday. Burial was in the Albert Dunning Cemetery.

Clinton MO - John Goddard of McLane street died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, having been ill with the flue about three weeks. Mr. Goddard, though at times suffering intensely, had not been continually confined to his bed. His good wife, who has also been ill, was only a little stronger than he and Mr. Goddard's constant concern was for her well being. He even walked to the square Friday, for a few errands and returned home quite exhausted. The next day he was not able to be up and gradually slipped from earthly scenes and his faithful and devoted wife. John Jefferson Goddard was born February 22, 1863, at Versailles, Mo., the son of good and exemplary citizens. About 1888 Mr. Goddard came to Clinton where he continued making his home and January 21, 1891, he and Miss Margaret Lillie Brott of Laclede, Mo., were married. Miss Brott had visited in Clinton, where they met and had become friends. As a girl she lived across the street from the Pershing home in Laclede, was in the same class with General Pershing at school and was one of the guests at the farewell party given for him when he left the home town to go to West Point, the beginning of his splendid military career. Mr. and Mrs. Goddard were members of the Clinton Baptist church and owned a pleasant modern cottage on East Grand River street where they lied until reverses brought on by the depression made them lose it. Mr. Goddard will be remembered as an efficient and capable restaurant man, owning his own business some 15 years. He was always interested in people and had many friends. His home was also important to him and he prided himself on his fine garden and beautiful flowers. A deep and close companionship bound Mr. and Mrs. Goddard close together, making them quite self-sufficient and the severance of this band brings a sense of deep loss to her brave heart. One sister, Mrs. Lucille G. Spencer of Kansas City, and one brother Thornton Goddard of Norton, Kans., survive with his wife and many relatives in the Versailles community. Funeral services were Wednesday at the Wilkinson Chapel. The body was laid to rest in Englewood.

Clinton MO, Oct 1934 - Death of W. M. Godwin - An Outstanding Citizen - His Kindly Guidance Had Helped Many - A founder of the Clinton Y.M.C.A. and a Staunch Advocate of Prohibition - The life work of W. M. Godwin was brought to a close at 11:25 Thursday night, October 25, at his home on South Third Street. He had been ill since October 12 with a serious stomach trouble. When he first became ill, his two sons were called home, but after their arrival he rallied, bolstering up their hopes until the last day. He had suffered from this stomach trouble many years and five years ago had a very serious attack. Mr. Godwin was one of the outstanding citizens of Clinton, always standing for what he thought was right, regardless of how it affected him or his business personally. He was the friend of children and for many years was the juvenile truant officer, giving the children gentle and wise counsel and getting underprivileged children back into school or into home where they could be cared for properly. In this work, Mr. Godwin and his wife worked hand in hand and their home was often a haven for little ones in times of distress. For many years he was in charge of the charity work of Henry county, the greater share of the service being given without compensation. He had been engaged in welfare work since 1887, and organized and for years headed the Associated Charities of Clinton. Born in Cooper County, Mo., March 6, 1860, Mr. Godwin came to Henry county with his parents the late Wm. and Amelia Ann Moore Godwin when very young. He grew to manhood near Lucas seizing every opportunity for an education. He attended the University of Missouri and in 1884, 50 years ago, graduated with the degree that was then called Principal of Pedagogy. He was a natural teacher and combined with this the best training that Missouri had to offer at that time. As the days and years grew, Mr. Godwin was ever a seeker of Knowledge and not only received it but gave the things he knew to those with whom he associated. He was a teacher for many years, a part of the time in Clinton's historic Lampkin Academy where Miss Jean Audrey Blakemore also taught and who became his wife June 27, 1889. Soon after he left college, Mr. Godwin came to Clinton and was employed as reporter on the Democrat for some time. During that time he was correspondent for the New York World and other newspapers. He wrote with a brilliancy of style and human interest seldom found in such a young man. The rest of his life he retained his interest in newspaper work. Perhaps the service that he enjoyed most was rehabilitation work with injured soldiers in St. Louis following the World war. He planned occupation for which the soldiers would be best adapted for life occupations, following the great sacrifice they had made for their country. He had a sympathetic understanding of their problems and in traveling over the state today, one meets many men who owe their bright outlook on life to the kindly guidance of Mr. Godwin at this critical period of their life. He served Henry county as fuel administrator during the war, also was one of Henry county's "Four-Minute Men", who spoke in behalf of the sale of Liberty loans and in the Red Cross campaigns. Mr. Godwin also served as the county school commissioner from 1887 to 1889 and was secretary of the state school book commission under Governor Francis. Ever interested in youth, he was one of the founders of the Clinton Young Men's Christian association and served as one of its directors during its operation. He led a group of young men of the organization, who termed themselves the Inner Circle, in the study of the Bible and prayer. Several from this group gave their lives as ministers of the gospel and others have become prominent lawyers, doctors and entered other professions. In early youth, Mr. Godwin was converted. He came from a family of Methodists as his father helped establish the M. E. Church at Lucas, and in Clinton W. M. Godwin served many years on the board of deacons at M. E. Church, South, sponsored Epworth League, and was ready with hand and heart to do anything he could at all times. As a Bible teacher he excelled and during his entire residence in Clinton taught in the M. E. Church, South. At the time of his death, he was the Women's Bible class teacher on Sunday morning. He also taught in the South Side Sunday School in recent years. For a number of years, Mr. Godwin worked for the M. K. & T. railroad as immigration agent for the purpose of colonizing Texas. The past 40 years he was in the real estate and insurance business in Clinton, and during all that time he was a helpful counselor to his insurance customers, having himself a complete knowledge of the business and always ready to give his excellent advice for the customers best interests. He was a staunch advocate of prohibition and for a number of years led and spoke for the Prohibition party of this county and state. If he thought the cause to be right, he was unafraid to state publicly his stand on any question. His marriage to Miss Jean Audrey Blakemore resulted in a beautiful companionship for each which grew with the years. To their union were born three sons. One died in infancy and the other two, Blakemore Godwin, now director of the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio, and Jimmie Jean Godwin, who is an electrical engineer with the Westinghouse Company, at St. Louis, are left to comfort their mother. There is one grandchild, pretty little Jean Ruth Godwin, age 28 months, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Jean Godwin. Of course, this little lady was the idol of her grandfather's heart. Mr. Godwin put first things first - the will of God and his righteousness, and wise and sympathetic counsel to his own family, and an unfailing generosity toward humanity. He and his wife guided their own sons into fine, worthwhile Christian lives. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Franklin street M. E. church. Burial was in Englewood. The South Side Sunday school where Mr. Godwin was a teacher many years went to the cemetery in a body after their regular services in the afternoon. At the graveside each member of the group dropped a white flower into the open grave, demonstrating their love and respect for their friend.

GOFF, Jane Ann TEMPLETON
b: Oct 10 1840, West Virginia

bur:
Combs Cemetery, Deer Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Jane Ann Templeton was born in West Virginia, Oct. 10, 1840. She had the misfortune to lose her father when quite young. Her mother then marrying G. R. Powell, who emigrated to Henry county when she was 12 years of age. They settled on a farm close to Bronaugh church. When nineteen she was united in marriage to Ephriam Goff and with the exception of 4 years spent in Boone county, their lives were spent in the Bronaugh and Alberta neighborhoods. Four children were given to this union, all living - Mrs. Minnie A. Day of Missoula, Mont., Edwin L. Goff of Clinton, Mo., Mrs. Fannie Lee Hastain, of Chilhowee, Mo., Chas. F. of Luport, Idaho. She also raised her niece, Ollie Atwell Chalmers, whom she always loved as a daughter. She was converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Bronaugh about 55 years ago. In January 1914, her husband passed to the great beyond at what is known as the Eph. Goff place, one-half mile west of Alberta, where they had lived many years. She then went to make her home with her son Ed. who has a home on the same farm. After the death of his wife in 1921 she did all she could to make a home for him and Vest, and they all realized that she was overtaxing herself. Her beloved foster daughter, "Pet," took her to her home, and gave her every care possible until last fall, when on account of needing some one stronger to lift her, she was brought back to her son's, where she was tenderly cared for by him and his children until she passed away March 14. For some years she had been afflicted with dropsy. She went so easily that her son and daughter, Mrs. Hastain, who were near in the room, did not realize that the end was near until it came. Grandma Goff, as we who knew her best, loved to call her, was one of nature's gentle women, always kind and sympathetic. She was always so grateful and appreciated every little thing done for her. Those who served her always said "It is a pleasure to do for Grandma, she never finds fault or criticizes." What a wonderful tribute! As long as she was able she enjoyed going to the neighborhood gatherings and got as much pleasure as the youngest one present; and everything seemed a little happier and more complete if she was there to give you a friendly greeting. The funeral services were held at her son's March 15, at 2 p.m. Dr. Allen, of Lewis Station, who had been her physician and friend, conducted the services and paid a beautiful tribute to her memory. On account of the inclement weather and much sickness in the neighborhood, only a few of the many who would have loved to pay this last tribute of respect, were permitted to be present. The body was laid to rest in Combs cemetery, by the side of her husband. Thus a good woman has passed on, but her life will rest as a benediction on and an inspiration in the lives of her five children, 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and a very large host of friends.

GONNER, Frank Xavier
b: 1860
d: 1912

Durango Herald, Durango, CO - The entire populace of Durango was shocked shortly after the noon hour yesterday when the report that Frank Gonner, the well known music dealer and photographer, had committed suicide in Silverton, spread like wildfire. At first the report was not generally believed, but further telephone communication with the Silverton authorities brought a verification. The exact time of the terrible deed is not known. Last Friday Mr. Gonner boarded the train for Silverton to attend to business matters. On Sunday afternoon at 2:15 he was seen by ...an intimate friend, a Mr. Patterson, and then went to the depot supposedly to take the afternoon train for home. This he did not do and the last time he was seen was at 11:30 o'clock Sunday night. About 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning as Louie Fedal was delivering milk in the vicinity of the Silverton Northern railroad yards... [he] drove down the tracks by some box cars on a siding south of the depot, ...[and]... saw a hand sticking out of a box car door. The weather at the time was 12 degrees below zero. Believing that some man was sleeping in the car, Mr. Fedal went to the box car where he discovered a dead man laying in a pool of blood. He immediately notified Coroner McLeod and an investigation was made. The dead man's identification was soon learned as Frank Gonner of this city. Only one set of tracks led to the box car and there were no signs of any scuffle. It was a clear case of suicide. Beside the body lay a common pocketknife with its blad of three and a half inches opened. On the right and front side of the throat was found a ragged wound three inches in length which had severed the external jugular vein, according to the doctor who was called. The nature of the wound was such that Mr. Gonner had lived for approximately an hour before becoming unconscious and he slowly bled to death. The indications were that after entering the box at an early hour Monday morning, Mr. Gonner had taken off his overcoat and placed it against the side wall. He then took off his necktie and partly took his collar off. He then no doubt pulled out his knife and slashed his throat while in a sitting posture. The indications are that he remained seated until from the loss of blood he lost consciousness, sprawled out and died. So clear was the case of suicide that the coroner decided no inquest was necessary. The body was removed to the Prosser undertaking parlors where the clothes were searched. A gold watch, an Elk charm, an Elk pin, and $6.25 in money were found, and the presence of these articles exploded any other theory of death except by suicide. So cold was the temperature and so long had the body been exposed to the cold that when it was found the hands, feet, and other portions of the body were frozen stiff, while the face was frostbitten. Mr. Gonner had been dead for a period in excess of 24 hours when found. The late Mr. Gonner was a member of the Durango B.P.O. Elks, having joined that order on April 20, 1904. At one time he was the exalted ruler. He was also a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Mystic Circle, carrying $3,000 insurance in the former order. The remains of the late Frank Gonner were brought to this city from Silverton shortly before 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon, they being accompanied by John McKinnin, who had been sent up for that purpose by the local order of Elks. At the depot the remains were packed in the hearse and accompanied by members of the Elks lodge were taken to the Goodman undertaking parlors. The Presbyterian church was filled to its capacity this afternoon with the associates and friends of the late Frank Gonner as well as people who knew him, not intimately, but as a respected citizen of this city for many years. The center portion of the church was reserved for the family of the departed, for the members of the Durango band, who attended in a body, for the B.P.O. Elks, and the Woodmen of the World, a large representation from both of the last two named, being present. The casket was covered with flowers, most of them being set pieces from the organizations to which the departed belonged, and from personal friends. The Elks had charge of the services at the cemetery where they conducted the ceremony for burial of the dead according to their ritual. Then "dust unto dust" and the remains of Frank Gonner now rest beside those of wife and child in Greenmount. Frank Xavier Gonner was born in Luxemburg, Germany, on May 3, 1860, being the youngest of a family of three, and the only son. his parents were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gonner, the later dying when Frank was quite small. After the lapse of some years, Mr. Gonner married again and with his second wife he is still living Luxemburg. Both daughters are married, one residing in Luxemburg, the other in Berlin. The first seventeen years of the boy's life was spent in the city of his birth, where he was carefully educated, being destined for the priesthood, since his family were devout Catholics. The life did not appeal to the lad and he rebelled. Paul Gonner, like the heads of so many German families, was a rigid disciplinarian, and gave his son his choice between the church and the army as a future career. Since Frank cared for neither, and some of the things he might do were not agreeable to the family, his father consented to his making a trip to the United States with an uncle, who is at present located in California. Doubtless, the elder Gonner thought that the boy would, after a time, grow tired of this country and, returning to his native land, serve his time in the German army as all able-bodied youths must do, and then settle down to one of the professions. But Frank's prejudice against serving in the army was deep seated, more so than his father knew, as events proved, for he never returned to serve the allotted time. The subject of our sketch remained with is uncle for a year or two after reaching the United States, and then struck out for himself, visiting a number of cities and finally drifting to Albuquerque, thence to Durango. ...[He] went to work for Henry Shrader in the bakery. It was in the late 80's that he obtained a position on the Home ranch in the Animas Valley, at that time owned by Mr. Archdeakin. Later, he went into the Express business in Durango in which he was engaged for a couple of years. In 1889 W. H. Roberts came to Durango from Clinton, MO., and opened a photograph gallery. Mr. Gonner studied the business with Mr. Roberts, first as an assistant, then partner, and finally when Mr. Roberts returned to Clinton in 1891, becoming sole owner of the business. He was actively engaged in conducting a photographic studio in Durango continuously since that time, and did some remarkable and beautiful work. During his time in that business he had several partners and a number of years ago he added a music department to the studio.

GONNER, Hattie Estelle ROBERTS
b: Jul 3 1869, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
d: Jun 9 1897, Durango, CO

Clinton MO - Mrs. H. Estelle Gonner, died in her home in Durango, Colorado, Wednesday noon. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Roberts [Susan Jane and William Henry], who now reside two miles northeast of Clinton. She was born in this place July 3, 1869, graduated from the Franklin school at this place and one year a student at the college, when she went to Durango, arriving immediately after the death of her brother-in-law, A. J. Faris. Since that time to the present she has been the constant companion and comforter of her eldest sister, Mrs. Faris [Regina Ella Eddins]. At Durango she was a successful teacher in the public school for two years, when she married Frank Gonner, at that place. Three children have been born to them, Henry, Dorothea, and a little babe, whose flight drew the mother with silken cords to the world where there is neither pain nor sorrow. Her mother, left this place for Durango Monday, in answer to a telegram stating the seriousness of her illness, but the sweet spirit had left the body several hours before her arrival. Only those who have suffered like bereavements, can realize the mother's sorrow, the husband's desolation, and the sister's heartache for their darling dead, and the little ones who call for mamma, cannot be answered. As she set out to work she worked to the end. There was no time in her life to which she rested. The blade wore thin, and broke and fell, but there was no stain upon it. Frank and fearless but with much mercy for want and sorrow. Her mental and moral fiber was wonderfully healthy and fine and seemed to deserve more years on earth, than she has passed for its perfection. Hattie Estelle Roberts was born July 3, 1869, at Clinton, Missouri, and died in Durango, Colorado, June 9, 1897. A short life, but full of action, love, and worthy efforts. She was graduated from the Clinton high school at the early age of sixteen, finished college with high honors [her diary indicates she had to quit school in the spring to come to Durango]. She joined the Baptist church at the age of twelve years. She removed to Durango in 1888 and taught in our city schools, being at one time principal of the Whittier school. In 1981, she was united in marriage with Frank Gonner and leaves by her death a devoted husband and two little children, Henry and Dorothy. A tiny babe precede her to her heavenly home by a few short days. The dates that bound this young life are not far separated, but they mean so much, they hold a lifetime of love and devotion to parents, sisters, husband, children, and friends. Truly in this instance life was measured by "heart throbs, not by figures on a dial." As one who knew her from her childhood and observed her in the Sunday School, in the everyday classroom, in her social relations, and last and best in her home, I can speak of her sterling worth, energy, steadfast character, and her wonderful mental equipment. The only regret being that her light might have shown further, that her circle that she jealously kept for those she loved best might have been extended so that others could have shared in her many gifts. Friday the last sad duties were paid to our friend. At the home she cherished many friends gathered to look once more on her lovely face. The most beautiful flowers were there, tokens from friends and from the lodges to which her husband belonged (the Woodsmen and the Maccabees) to brighten the abode of death... The Rev. J. J. Keeler of the Baptist church, of which Mrs. Gonner was a member, conducted the funeral services. From her graduating essay entitled "Windows From Jerusalem," I find the closing lines as follows, which she has verified. "We will soon come to the last bar in the music, the last act in the tragedy, to the last time and the very last word in the history of our life and we will stand on the bank of the river..."

bur:
Urich Cemetery, Bogard Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Sophia Hillegas was born at Miamisburg, Ohio February 9, 1836, and departed this life January 10, 1925, aged 88 years, 11 months and 1 day. Into this span of years has been crowded all the labor and love of a good mother and a successful homemaker. Most of her girlhood was spent in Ohio and Indiana, states for which she always had the fondest love and memories. Her days were more than the average number allotted to man and they were filled with the vigor and ambition of the true pioneer. In the fall of 1856, her father, Samuel Hillegas, brought his family from their home in Illinois and came to Missouri - in a covered wagon - and found a new home. They settled on the farm now belonging to Herman Weber. On February 8, 1858, she was joined in marriage to Charles I. Gooch. To this union were born eight children, seven of whom survive her. They are Mrs. Martha Jenkins, Kansas City, Mo.; Wm. Gooch, Urich, Mo.; Miss Mary Gooch, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Lucy Jefferson, Creighton, Mo.; George Gooch and Henry Gooch, Urich, Mo., and Edward Gooch, Denison, Washington. She leaves also eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. As a bride, she and her husband founded their home on the virgin land which he had entered from the Government. There they reared their children, tilled the soil and prospered. They saw new settlers come and new homes built and the country developed from wind-swept prairie grassland to neat farms. They saw their children go out from the homestead to make homes of their own. They lived religiously, for both had been members of the Christian Church at Old Urich for many years, and they had adhered strongly to its teachings. In August, 1908, Grandpa Gooch, after being an invalid for eleven years, passed away. During this time his wife was his constant companion and nurse, doing all for his comfort that could be done. She has followed him now and it is comforting and wonderful to believe that with their infirmities behind them their spirits are together again. Death came to Grandma quietly and peacefully and brought her tired, age-worn body and mind rest. Life here on earth could not promise her more but God has in reserve for those who love him, new life and new hope. Grandma lived long and well, giving freely of her strength for her family and having the honor and respect of all who knew her. She has gone now to her loved ones. May God rest her soul in peace! Funeral services were held at the Urich Christian church Sunday afternoon and burial made at the Urich Cemetery.

She was a kind and loving neighbor and friend, always ready to help in time of need, easily winning the respect of all who knew her.
