GREEN, Beulah Stella GREEN
b: Apr 28 1915, Deepwater, Henry Co, MO
d: Aug 20 1996, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery GA-GU, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
arr: Consalus Funeral Homes

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - Beulah Stella Green, 81, died August 20, 1996, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clinton after a long illness. She was born April 28, 1915, in Deepwater, the daughter of William and Della Belle (Simmons) Green. Her mother died when Beulah was a very small child. Times were difficult for her and her brothers and sister, without a mother, but her father, with the help of her uncle, Lemon Green, raised them. On December 23, 1933, in Osceola, she was united in marriage to Clarence Ivan "Shorty" Green. To this union nine children were born. Being a mother had to be tough when she herself did not have a mother to teach, correct, love and care for her, but she did the best she could with love and perseverance. Beulah and Shorty were unselfish in giving of their love and kindness to neighbors, friends and family. One granddaughter, Sharon Sue Pitts, was taken into their home and was raised like one of their own children. They also helped in caring for other grandchildren from time to time. To Beulah her family meant everything, but when she lost her son Larry, in a tragic automobile accident, both she and Clarence realized that there was something missing in their lives. They were comforted by the great amount of strength and love shown them by the caring members of Allen Street Church. They began attending church and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and joined the church. Soon after this on July 25, 1971, Clarence died. To most people losing a son and a husband would make them want to give up. But Beulah had never been a quitter and now was no time to start. Her strength and strong will was even stronger with the help of her Lord. His loving hand has sustained her through many years. Beulah loved her home on the edge of town. The farm-like setting had a certain air of comfort and coziness to it. Through the years she raised many farm animals. She sold eggs, milk and rabbits to help bring in extra money for her family. Her homemade bread, rolls and cooking will never be forgotten. Her love for flowers was evident when in the spring jonquils, tulips, lilacs, peonies and roses were blooming all over her yard. She had a smile for anyone who would stop by and a hot cup of coffee awaited you, if you could sit a spell and visit with her. She made you feel welcome and nothing will be the same without her. She loved the simple pleasures of life, like parades, county fairs, fishing, the 4th of July and Labor Day Deepwater Picnic (which she seldom missed during her life). She also enjoyed family cookouts and get-togethers at holidays. She was very content with what she had or with anything you would give her or do for her. I know there were times when she would be lonely, but they would soon pass. She was always glad to see her grandchildren and they were always glad to see her and to see the newest addition of chicks, puppies, kittens or newborn rabbits. There was always something to do at Granny's. She is survived by two sons, Donald Eugene Green and Ivan lee Green, both of Clinton; four daughters, Shirlene Greer, Mound City, Kansas, Beulah Ruth Trenary and Sharon Kay Green, both of Clinton, Linda Sue Holek, Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, Clyde Green, Windsor, and Roy Green, Clinton; one sister, Minnie Benson, Piggett, Arkansas; 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, an infant, Clarence Edwin Green and Larry Green; a daughters Mary Ann Moeller; two brothers, Lee Green and Harry Green. Funeral services were held Friday, August 23, at the Consalus Chapel, Clinton. Burial was in the Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.

GREGG, Dorothy Juanita
b: Mar 20 1926, Dayton, Cass Co, MO
d: Jun 28 1941, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO
bur: Parker Cemetery, Creighton, Johnson Co, MO

The Creighton Banner July 3, 1941 - Dorothy Juanita Gregg was born at Dayton, Missouri, March 20, 1926, the youngest of ten children, to George and Pearl Gregg, and passed away June 28, 1941, at the Mercy hospital in Kansas City, Mo. The family, soon moved to Creighton, Mo. and Dorothy was enrolled in the cradle roll department of the Creighton Christian Sunday school. At eleven years of age Dorothy joined the Creighton, Christian church under the preaching of Mrs. Armstrong and was baptized August 1, 1937, into the communion of the church. Although she was only fifteen Years old at the time of her passing yet Dorothy lived a life beyond her years. Quite early she cultivated a taste for good reading and in this way she spent much of her leisure time. Through her reading experiences she fared forth with birds and flowers and trees, and the fairies of the child world. As a primary child she won a place in a reading contest by her very appreciative rendition of "There Are Fairies at the Corner of Our Garden." Because of ill health Dorothy was forced to be absent from school for months at a time. During these months she constantly looked forward to the day when she could go back to school, and when she was privileged to be in attendance, even though weak of body, it was always the opinion of her teachers that she did her work as well as it could be done. She had a willing mind and her mental ability was out of all comparison with her physical strength. Dorothy was not only a good little student but she cultivated the graces of an amiable disposition. All the children at school and in the community admired and loved Dorothy. There are also many friends of mature years who will miss her coming and going among them. A large part of this companionship was centered around her mother who so constantly cared for her little daughter during the years of her sickness, and whose hopes for her recovery sometimes ran high in spite of facts to the contrary. The tie between mother and daughter was a strong one. The mother gives us these quotations from a religious journal which Dorothy loved to read. "Somewhere today, among the hills of Heaven, She walks with all the stars around her, And we, who lost her here on earth, Grow happy, knowing God hath found her. "Our frail minds cannot comprehend the mind of the infinite God, and so we are often perplexed and we wonder why some are chosen, rather than others, but when the Great School Master of our soul says, 'School is out,' it is enough. We close our books and answer to roll call." In this same journal this passage was marked by Dorothy. "He sees when their footsteps falter, When their hearts grow weak and faint; He marks when their strength is failing, And listens to each complaint; He bids them rest for a season, For the pathway has grown too steep, And folded in fair, green pastures, He giveth His loved ones sleep." Dorothy leaves, besides her mother, Mrs. Pearl Gregg. Two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Glenn Ewing of Urich, Mrs. T. M. Bugg of Independence, Paul Gregg of Independence, Raymond Gregg of Creighton and Theodore Gregg of Creighton. Mrs. Addie Stewart, her maternal grandmother, and Mrs. Nancy Peterson, her paternal grandmother, are still living. Services were at the Christian church Monday afternoon. Burial was made in the Parker cemetery beside her father, two sisters and two brothers, with Arnold's funeral service in charge.

Creighton Banner, Creighton MO - Mrs. Margaret Ann Earhart Gregory, daughter of George and Matilda Earhart, was born at Wytheville, Virginia, December 15, 1849 and departed this ife at the home of a daughter, Mrs. O. E. Douglass, Urich, March 25 1931. She came with her parent to Bates county in 1856 and in 1868 went with them to Dennison, Texas (as a result of Order No. 11), returning to Mingo township, Bates county in 1866 where she was married to Benjamin F. Gregory January 28 1869.  To this union there were born twelve chldren.  Those who survive are: Mrs. Mary Miller, Mrs. Ollie E. (Olive Ellen) Douglass, George Gregory, Chester A. ("Art") Gregory, and Charles O. ("Hick") Gregory of Urich and Mrs. R. H. (Emma Bell) Ross of Creighton.  She is also survived by one brother, G. A. Earhart of Nevada, Missouri, and twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She professed faith in her Savior and united with the Cove Creek Christian church about the year 1895 and continued a faithful member of that body to the time of her death. From the time of her marriage till the death of her husband in 1927, a period of fifty eight years, her home was in Mingo township, Bates county and her home was intimately associated with the personal welfare of that community.  She was a noble woman and a tireless worker but never too busy to help the needy or to relieve the distressed.  She was kind, patient and indulgent.  Those who knew her best loved her most. After the death of her husband she came to Urich to make her home with her daughter, Ollie.  A little more than a year before leaving the farm her health gave way and she never regained her strength.  In the home of Mrs. Douglass, she was tenderly cared for and had proper medical attention, but neither the skill of the physician or the gentle touch of her attendant could stay the hand of the grim reaper.  She went out to obey the final summons that await us all. Funeral services were held at the Urich Christian church, Thursday, March 26, and burial was made in the Mullin cemetery by the side of her husband and six children who preceded her to that land where the weary are at rest. - Note: Information between "()" has been added. Drakes Chapel Cemetery, Deer Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton Missouri, Oct 18 1902 - The sunset of life came to Alexander B. Griffith at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. G. V. Berry, at 9:30 p.m. Sunday from general debility and the disease attendant upon old age. He only took to his bed Tuesday, October 7, and his sufferings were severe until unconsciousness came, which lasted 30 yours before the spirit took its flight, leaving a smile upon his countenance so sweet just to look upon it was a benediction. His work was all done. His wife is content in her sorrow - just a little longer shall we labor, love and wait. The 5th of this December would have been their Golden anniversary. Bose Garth, who came to pay his last respects to his departed friend, remembered and was present at their wedding, which occurred at the home of the bride's father, David R. Drake, near Lewis Station, Dec. 5, 1852. Margaret Drake was the bride and the only other witness in the county now living is Mrs. Dr. Royston of Huntingdale. Drake's Chapel was named for the bride's father, who gave forty acres of ground to the church for a camp ground. Mr. Griffith was born in Allegheny County, Va. September 8, 11819 and came to Cass County at the age of 20, where he eventually built the town of Dayton. Most of his life was spent in the mercantile business and he was unusually successful. In 1849, he went to California, where success, as usual, crowned his efforts and he returned home three years later, married and purchased 1000 acres near Lewis Station and erected the first house about the year 1868. His was a naturally bright mind, cultivated by travel and rich experience. He had been in nearly every state of the Union, was in the Mexican War and fought four years in the South with the boys in gray and was quartermaster under Gen. Rains. His wife and daughters said of him, he never had a sorrow, his disposition was all sunshine. He was charitable to the poor and always ready with a merry jest and joke. He was postmaster at Creighton, under Cleveland's administration. His profession of Christianity took place at Drake's Chapel 30 years ago. The only deaths that occurred in his family previous to his was that of his daughter, Mrs. G. W. Bates at Lexington and one little grandchild. Twenty-seven grandchildren are living. The surviving children are Dr. D. R. Griffith, Manila, Arkansas; Dr. C. E. Griffith, Windsor; Mrs. Sallie Davidson, Stowell, Texas; Dr. J. K. Griffith, Manila, Arkansas; Mrs. G. V. Berry, Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. Griffith have been the past year with their sons at Manila but foreseeing the end and wishing to breathe his last amid the old familiar scenes and have his tired old body rest at his beloved chapel, they arrived in Clinton two weeks ago and the last chapter of a wonderfully eventful life is closed. The funeral was under the auspices of the Masonic order. Jack Thornton of Clinton and Col. A. M. Tutt, now deceased, initiated him in this order, in what was then known as Tebo lodge, which consisted of between 70 and 80 members.

"Aunt Sallie" was born in Muskingom, Ohio January 25, 1837 married to Alfred Grigsby January 16, 1852; came to this county in 1870. She joined the M. E. church, south, in 1859 while living in Ohio and united with the same church at Bear Creek. There is no doubt but what she is now safe in the blood-washing throng whose robes are whiter than snow. In her home, she was a most pleasant woman and the caller, whether neighbor or stranger, was soon made to feel at home and tho it was humble, it was richer in sunshine than the home of a king. Her life was a fountain of hope and overflowed to brighten the pathway of all who came within her sphere. She leaves a husband and four children to mourn the greatest loss one can known in this life. The aged husband is heart broken, to him she has not grown older but has ever remained the beautiful bride whom he led to the altar 48 years ago; nearly half a century she has been at his side, his joy, his life, his all.

Englewood Cemetery GA-GU, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Bert Grimes drowned. His body was found by an Evans and Dukes boys near the Katy Grand River bridge Tuesday morning, when they were fishing. They noticed an object in among the willows, which looked like the body of a man, and notified Sheriff Glen Runner immediately, who with Deputy Sheriff W. T. Runner and Coroner Dr. W. R. Campbell, went to the scene at once, finding the body face downward with his feet next to the bank. As the river was very deep here, it was with great difficulty that they got him out, and then did not recognize him. Undertakers Sims & Wilkinson were called, who brought the body to their undertaking rooms. The body and features had swollen so that it was impossible to tell who he was. Bert Grimes had been missing from home since May 11th at 8:30 p.m., so as soon as it became known that a body had been found, it was thought it was possible that it was he. At first even those who knew him best could not identify him, but he finally was, by an injured finger, his ears, that had been partly frozen at one time, an injured foot, and by his clothing. He had been in poor health for five years, and had become despondent. Lately he had been saying that he was going to Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was not going to pay his way, as work had been scarce this winter. He talked with his wife and mother that night before leaving home, but did not tell them where he was going. They told him to draw the money from the bank and go on the train if he should decide to go and let them know when he went. He said he would write them right away if he went, but never told them if he was going that night. As he often stayed at the poultry house at night they were not alarmed when he did not return, and even since then they thought he had decided to go and were hoping for a letter. It is thought that he could have boarded a train and fallen off, or could have in his downcast mood, walked out the track and fallen in the river. There were no signs of violence on his body. The coroners' inquest was held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, and returned the following verdict: "We the jury find that Bert Grimes came to his death by drowning, cause unknown." Deceased was born in Park County, Indiana, May 29, 1877. At the age of 14, he came to Clinton with his parents, which had been his home since. He was for years a bridge builder, but ever since the Armour & Co. plant was opened seven years ago, he had been employed there as a box maker. He was married May 21, 1921, to Miss Maggie Daniels. This devoted wife survives, also his mother Mrs. L. F. Grimes; his grandmother, Mrs. Ann King; one brother Arthur of Clinton; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Short of Kansas City, and Mrs. Gertrude Ware of southern California. His sister Mrs. Stella Short and his uncle, Warner King of Nottowo, Texas, returned the first of this week having been called here by the serious illness of Mrs. Ann King. Deceased was a member of the W.O.W. He was most devoted to his wife, mother and grandmother. He had most tenderly cared for this dear mother and grandmother since a small lad, providing with every comfort that was in his power to give. He was a faithful worker. All deeply sympathize with his family, on whom his death falls so heavily. The funeral services were conducted at Englewood on Wednesday, after which his body was laid to rest.

d: Jul 2 1910, Clinton, Henry Co, MO

Clinton MO, Jul 9 1910 - James Terrel Grimes died July 2, at 2:50 p.m. at his home on North Main street, bidding farewell to the fading flories and splendors of this earth. He was 43 and his time was all too short among use. Born in Moberly on October 25, 1866 and spent his entire life there except the fourteen or fifteen years, happy ones, in Clinton. Married to Dora Mae Elsea in Moberly and she was called to "come up higher" just nine months to the very day and almost to the very hour of his going away. Two children - a son Charles now just 21, and Ada 16, so tenderly loved by all. Brother Jimmy is survived by a dear old tender hearted mother; a brother Arthur, and his faithful devoted sisters, Mrs. J. W. Thaxton, Mrs. Omer Martin, Mrs. Joe Garrett and Miss Minta. Like Mary and Martha of old, they mourn the going away of their dear brother. He built a good home on North Main Street and numbered his friends by his acquaintances. Many a man, on a cold wintry day, has been attracted by the cheerful fire of his great base burned, has knocked on the door and was warmed by the fire and his genial hospitality. In poor health for two years and consulted physicians in Clinton, Moberly and St. Louis. His body was frail and disease and suffering had settled on his frame and he spent weary days and sleepless nights and lonely silent hours we know so little about because he was brave and told it not. But Jimmy Grimes never gave up, never peddled his troubles and was calm and cool to the end and his only regret in going away was that he was so much needed for the good of his children.

Mr. and Mrs. Grimes first came to Clinton from Illinois in 1885. They were here but a short time, then moved to Nebraska, then to Indiana, on to Illinois and again to Clinton January 30, 1889, which remained her home. Mr. Grimes followed the carpenter trade. They had four children, Bert and Gertie, who are deceased; Charles Arthur of Clinton, now an invalid, and Mrs. Stella Short of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Grimes is also survived by six grandchildren, Orville, William and Viola Grimes of Clinton, Lena Marie Grimes of Kansas City, Mrs. Myrtle Kugler of Chicago and Frances Grimes of Fresno, Calif. Five great grandchildren also survive her. Into the long life span of Mrs. Grimes was written splendid examples of high courage, industry and patience. She was a member of the Christian church, belonging some thirty years. She was very active and her garden, which she tended herself, was always productive of fine vegetables and beautiful flowers which she greatly loved. She raised chickens too, and took pride in her thrift. She loved pretty things and liked to sew, quilting a great part of her time. The last quilt she made was a wedding ring pattern for Mrs. Clara Grimes. She was also a great reader and was never at a loss in discussing any subject with any person who might stop to see her. Brave and courageous, she had a happy spirit that shed hope and good cheer upon all who were in trouble and throughout her years of illness she was patient and uncomplaining, keeping her interest in all things that touched her life up to the end. Hers was a many sided life of unusual worth and goodness. The funeral will be held Thursday at the home and the body laid to rest in Englewood beside her husband and parents.

d: Oct 2 1909

Clinton MO, Oct 9 1909 - Death of Mrs. J. T. Grimes - It is with deep sorrow we print the above headline. One of Clinton's happiest homes has been devastated. About two years ago a serious nerve trouble made Mrs. Grimes helpless and caused her to be placed in the hospital for the best medical help possible but a higher power than ours had taken to Himself. Mrs. Grimes breathed her last at 5 p.m. Saturday, October 2. Mr. Grimes, her mother Mrs. Elsea, Monk Evans and Miss Anna Henry accompanied the remains to Moberly. Mrs. Grimes was the kindest of neighbors, always good to the needy, a tender wife and mother, a member of the South Methodist Church and Eastern Star. The neighbors sent a beautiful floral anchor by Mrs. Will Jarvis, who left for Moberly Sunday evening. The elks sent a floral pillow and the Fristo employees a wreath. The Eastern Star telephoned and had flowers furnished from the Moberly Lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Grimes had lived in Clinton nearly 15 years and had a beautiful home on North Main street. Two children, Charley the eldest, just about grown, and a daughter Adda, just 15, survive her.
