GROFF, Susan Carolina FRENCH
b: Oct 11 1851, McDonough Co, IL
d: Apr 17 1930, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Bethlehem Cemetery, Bethlehem Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - In the early hours of the morning of April 17, 1930, the spirit of Susan Carolina Groff left the earthly body to dwell in the Heavenly mansion that God has prepared for his beloved children. Susan Carolina French was born October 11, 1851, in McDonner county, Ill. At the time of her death she was 78 years, 6 months and 5 days old. When just a small child she moved with her parents from Illinois to Henry county and settled in the Bethlehem neighborhood, where she lived the remainder of her life. She was united in marriage March 9, 1873, to Lafayette Jackson Groff, but she was only permitted to enjoy life with her dear companion for three short years, when death crept in and took him away, April 9, 1876. Two sons had blessed her home to comfort and cheer her long widowhood, so the mother and sons grew very close to each other as the days and years passed by and they were men, married and had homes of their own. From then on she made her home with the youngest son, Lafe and family, but she was fortunate in having George and family living near by, until two years ago, when he bought and moved to the old Reid home, near Clinton. So surrounded as she was, with every comfort, and recipient of the boundless affection and constant care of her children and grandchildren, we can truly say the evening of her life was beautiful as a summer sunset. Mrs. Groff had a most lovable disposition, making friends with everyone; finding good in all about her. She belonged to the pioneer type of rugged womanhood, who gave herself both to her family and her neighborhood. Good deeds and unselfishness will bring a crown of glory on the other side. Early in life she professed faith in Christ and united with the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, and remained a member until the church was dissolved. She leaves to mourn their loss, two sons, L. J. Groff and George E. Groff; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Bettie Martin, east of Clinton and Mrs. Milt Morris, of Saline county.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at LaDue. Mr. Groves was an engineer by occupation and was a very skillful mechanic and is the inventor of the Groves Rotary engine a machine that promises to be valuable to the industrial world. He leaves a wife and several children all grown to manhood. He was born in England. - Montrose Recorder, Montrose, Henry Co, MO, Friday, Jan 17 1913 - Arthur Groves Sr. died at his home in LaDue Dec. 28 1912 with cancer of the mouth. He was born in London, England Feb. 9th 1840. He came to this country when a young man, and married Mrs. Mary Zount, April 30th, 1878. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. Lizzie Martin, Arthur C. Groves of LaDue and Wm. S. Groves of Monroe City, Mo. He also leaves a stepson Louis, and four grandchildren. Memorial services were held at the Christian church and the remains interred in the cemetery nearby, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. He was an honorary member of the W.O.W. Camp 250, LaDue by which order the services were conducted at the grave. In early manhood he enlisted in the Royal Navy and served with credit, and distinction in the corps of steam engineering. At the close of his naval career he returned to England and in a short time decided to visit new lands. His destination being either Australia or America. While in the naval service it was his good fortune to be assigned to a man of war that cruised in eastern waters, and in his experiences visited the Island of Ceylon, the straits and the East Indian Archipelago. Of the beautiful scenery, and delightful climate of Ceylon he always delighted to tell. He was perfectly familiar with the Mediterranean ports and those of the North and Baltic seas. It was his good fortune on one of the many cruises to coast along the fiords of Norway, to near the region of the midnight sun. Reaching America through the St. Lawrence he was at Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, and lived in Ontario province sometime. Time at length found him in Michigan, Illinois, and finally in Missouri. During his visit to Quebec he saw the old battlefield on the Plain of Abraham where England and France contended in the final struggle for supremacy of the western world. At Calhoun, Missouri he began a long term of service for the Missouri Kansas and Texas Railroad being on over thirty three years in the pumping department and making his home at LaDue. Mr. Groves was a man who took a keen interest in public affairs. He was for many years a Justice of the peace and a member of the board of education. He presided at the trials of several important cases in Henry County and was always ready to labor for the betterment of the Public schools. He was perfectly at home in the discussion of historical, mathematical and philosophical subjects. English literature was his delight and he loved to linger long among the writings of Burns and Dickins, having been personally acquainted with the distinguished novelist. Had Mr. Groves chosen one of the professions for his life work, law, teaching or theology, he would have reached an eminence many never attained. Being a man of a mechanical turn, he solved the problem of a new improvement in the application of steam and a new device for pumping water and oil from deep mines and wells, these two machines he had patented, and models built to demonstrate their practability and later formed a company which was incorporated only a few months before his death. Mr. Groves believed in the fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of man, and labored in season and out of season to extend the principals of fraternalism among men. Believing in these principles, he became a member of the Woodmen of the World, and was one of its active, tireless workers. Much of the influence of LaDue Camp 250 for good in the neighborhood and its solid advancement and steady growth is due to his influence. He could fill any office, work anywhere in the team and perform any part with ease and precision. In 1898 during one of old Sovereign Manager Farmers lecture tours in southwest Missouri he came to LaDue to assist the then struggling Woodmen Camp and gave a strong and eloquent address on Woodcraft to a crowded audience at the Methodist church. At the conclusion Mr. Groves rising in his seat made one of his characteristic appeals which resulted in many applications being presented and the struggling Camp being firmly established. In appreciation for these words of approbation and good will Sovereign Farmer made Mr. Groves an honorary member of LaDue Camp No. 250 to which he ever afterwards gave his best thought and service.

Clinton MO - Death of Jimmie Gumm - For months now, frequenters of the courthouse and the stranger of high and low degree having business there have remarked how they have missed the intelligent little boy who gambolled around the offices. Since last fall, tortuous disease has racked the frail body of Jimmie Gumm and like a hero, he has borne it. But Jimmie died Saturday night, March 14, 1896, with heart trouble, complicated with rheumatism and dropsy. As Death touched his brow, he whispered: "I'm Papa's boy and Jesus' child ... " Jimmie was the youngest child born to Caleb Gumm and his wife, born June 2, 1884. Monday 'twas an affecting scene at the family residence on North Main, where midst the neighbors and friends, there stood beside the bier of the dead, the noble minister J. C. Given, who spoke words of comfort to the broken-hearted father and mother, yet himself weeping as for his own, for Rev. Given had long been attached to the little fellow and loved him. After the brief services, the remains were conveyed to Englewood.

The vast untilled prairies stretched out in every direction. She fought hardships and the storm as none but a pioneer girl could fight them. She conquered; beauty, endurance, womanly grace were the trophies won. Warm hearted and king, she gathered friends about her. She became the pride of a woman worthy of her love and abiding confidence. This was certainly proven when the test came. No man was more true and attentive to an afflicted wife than Wm. H. Gutridge was to his until the end. Amid the scenes of her childhood she lived and amid those scenes she died. The unselfishness of her character was shown in her attitude toward the poor. No home was too humble for her to enter. No one too poor to find a welcome and help at her door. Many a hungry child has been fed by her benevolence; many a ragged one clothed by her generous hand. Now the hungry and shivering will listen in vain for her coming. She saw the Baptist church spring into life in the town of Calhoun and from that time until death its history was her history. She was identified with its every movement. No work was undertaken that she was not ready to take the larger share upon herself. When they needed a house, she not only gave generously of her money but for the time turned her home over to hired help and took the field to raise funds for the building. She did not weary until it was completed from foundation to belfry and bell. She did not cease giving until every dollar was paid. Well-polished stoves, dusted pews and flower-bedecked pulpit was the work of her hands. Her home was also the home of the preacher, of whatever name - never too tired or overcrowded to welcome him to her door. Now the end has come. The preachers said some earnest words. The people wept. And she is gone. But not forgotten.

Clinton MO - James E. Gutridge, son of the late Wm. H. and Martha Buster Gutridge, was born in Calhoun, September 7, 1869, and died at 7:00 o'clock November 18, 1938, at the age of 69 years. He was educated in the Calhoun school and later attended the St. Louis School of Pharmacy, where he graduated with the honors of the class of 1891. After graduating, Mr. Gutridge entered the drug store of his father, which was established in October, 1868, and the firm became known as Gutridge & Son. Mr. Gutridge united with the Baptist Church in Calhoun, when a young man and was also a member of the Knights of Pytheus Lodge of Windsor and the B.P.O. Elks No. 1034, Clinton. Politically, Mr. Gutridge was a staunch Democrat and their drug store was the meeting place of their legion of friends, who would meet and discuss their views. People, who had lived in or near Calhoun and moved away, always went to the Gutridge Drug Store upon their return to Calhoun as the Gutridge's were pioneers. Mr. Gutridge had a large collection of photographs of former Calhoun citizens as well as an interesting coin collection. Mr. Gutridge was a man who lived close to nature and made frequent hunting trips in the country on the farms of his friends and would sometimes be gone several days on fishing trips. No one had done more to restock the local streams with fish than he. The Gutridge Drug Store always carried a line of sporting goods and fishing tackle that would have done credit to a larger town; also a full line of school books and supplies. Many readers will recall their parents buying their school books and supplies from this well known firm. No paper that was circulated for those in need or for those whom misfortune had overtaken was without Mr. Gutridge's liberal contribution. In addition to his drug store, Mr. Gutridge mined and shipped clay and mined some coal. He was well posted on the coal formation in this locality and was a tireless worker trying to get capitalists interested in the coal fields and clay pits. Baseball was a sport that he took keen interest in, always reading the daily papers and always ready to inform the local fans about the major teams. After the death of Mr. Gutridge's father in September, 1907, he conducted the drug store until the spring of 1915 when he sold to Overholser & Son. In May, 1925, Mr. Gutridge entered the drug business again and conducted a store at his former location on the north side of the square until fire swept his store in 1932. Soon after the turn of the century he was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Adams of Windsor. There were no children from this union. The funeral was conducted Sunday at the home, by the Presbyterian Church and was attended by old friends from Windsor and Clinton. Mr. Gutridge was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by his widow, three nieces and one nephew. Among those from out-of-town attending the funeral were his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Will Gutridge and Mrs. Edison and daughter of Clinton. The remains were laid to rest on the Gutridge lot in the Calhoun cemetery. James Housey was in charge of the funeral service.

Mr. Gutridge had been a very successful farmer and businessman. He had accumulated quite a fortune, which he disposed of by will, satisfactory to his family. He made the members and friends of the Methodist church of Calhoun happy by leaving them $500 to erect a new church. This was a timely gift for the congregation and they are very grateful. Clinton MO - W. W. Gutridge, well known figure in Clinton and Calhoun, who had not been well for some time and a month ago returned from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., died suddenly at the home of his sister, Mrs. W. A. Tarr, in Calhoun, at 6:15 p.m. Friday, August 18. Mr. and Mrs. Gutridge had driven to Calhoun in the afternoon and at the insistance of Mrs. Tarr remained for supper with her. At the table he was stricken and leaning over, put his head on his wife's shoulder and closed his eyes to scenes of earth. By strange coincidence, the house of his sister stands on the same lot as did the home in which he was born. William Walter Gutridge was born October 15, 1866, the eldest son of John W. and Mary Elizabeth Pigg Gutridge of Calhoun. His father, who had come as an infant of six months to Henry County, with pioneering parents, was one of the outstanding farmers, stockmen, merchants and businessmen of Calhoun and organized the Bank of Calhoun of which his son was later the cashier for 16 years and under whose management never a dollar was lost. Mr. Gutridge was educated in the Calhoun Public Schools and, as a young man, clerked in his father's general merchandise store. He then went into the bank as bookkeeper and in 1896 was made cashier. Confidence in his ability and integrity was never misplaced and few bankers could look back over 16 years of such splendid service to a community as could W. W. Gutridge. He was a man of excellent, farsighted business judgment, honest and fair, and being thrifty and simple in tastes, was always conservative in thought and act. In 1910 he sold his interest in the bank and retired from active business life, to manage his own personal property and affairs. Two years later he moved to Clinton where he continued his residence, having been for a time in both Greeley, Colo., and Waggoner, Okla., before coming to Clinton. June 10, 1896, Miss Edith Cameron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Cameron, prominent Henry Countians, became his wife. One daughter was born to them, Mary Shirley, now Mrs. Boyer of Miami, Okla. In 1921 Mr. Gutridge successfully closed the affairs of the Western Missouri Trust Co., in Clinton. He, with his wife and daughter, held their membership in the Franklin Street Methodist Church, and were always active in the work, attending regularly. He was a man of quiet, modest manner, reserved in his opinions, devoted to his wife and daughter. He enjoyed being out in the open, and he and Mrs. Gutridge took many short trips inspecting his many farms, often cooking their meals in the open. Mr. Gutridge is survived by his widow, his only daughter and two grandchildren, Bette and Bill Boyer of Miami, Okla.; also three sisters, Mrs. W. A. Tarr, of Calhoun, Mrs. Clay Adair of Clinton and Mrs. H. E. Duncan of Kansas. Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday. Six nephews were his pallb earers: Neil Graham and John Cameron of Sedalia, Howard Cameron and Gene Adair of Kansas City; Hine Cameron of Topeka, Kans., Dwight Cameron of Clinton. The body was laid to rest in Englewood. Among those here from out-of-town for the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Boyer of Miami, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Adair, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cameron and Mrs. Charles Duncan of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Tarr and Mrs. Edith Simpson of Calhoun; Messrs. and Mesdames John Cameron and Neil Graham of Sedalia; Messrs. and Mesdames Logan Wall, Gene Pigg, Misses Agnes and Hattie Pigg of Windsor.

Guynn "Doc" died at his residence in Montrose at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, February 22, 1903, aged 25, and was buried in the Montrose Cemetery after services at the M. E. Church. He was born near LaDue and was named Richard Noble Guynn for Dr. Noble, who was the physician and intimate friend of the family. The family and acquaintances called the boy "Doc" and everybody knew Doc Guynn but very few people knew Richard Guynn. He grew up in the Montrose community and had many friends. He was always fond of athletic sport and at one time gained a local reputation as a baseball pitcher but he hurt his arm in one of their games and was forced to give up the sport. In September, 1896, he was married to Miss Cora Gutridge, who survives him. He took instructions of Mr. Scholtz, now of Appleton City, as jeweler, which trade he followed until forced to give it up on account of failing health. There seemed to be a taint of consumption in the family and more than a year ago, friends tried to persuade him to go to a different locality, but he refused, and for the past six months he has failed steadily until the end came. His devoted wife stood by him until the last and has the sympathy of the community.
