bur:

Calhoun Missouri, Feb 4 1905 - J. E. James Meets Death by the discharge of his own gun. No sensation more profound and no sorrow more sincere has enshrouded Calhoun or even Henry and its adjoining counties in all their vicissitudes than that which was caused by the fatal gun shot wound which befell J. E. James on the morning of Jan. 27, 1905, near the hour of 8 o'clock. Mr. James went very early that morning, over to his youngest daughter's, Mrs. W. C. Moore's, and told her that he was going to take a drive out in the country, asking her if she wished to go along with him. She told him she would, as she wanted to go out to Mr. Dannett's anyway, so he went to the livery barn and ordered a rig, asking them to have it ready by 8 o'clock and telling them he was going to Lewis Station or to Frank Diehl's. From the barn, he went directly to his residence, got his gun down, saying he would take it along, which was nothing unusual for him to do, and asked his wife for some rags for wiping the gun. She entered an adjoining room to get them, when she was shocked by the discharge of the gun. She rushed into the kitchen, saw what had happened and with agonizing shrieks, ran out on the front porches of the building and proclaimed - "Die Fatality!" Mrs. W. C. Moore, who had come over and was already to go with her father to the country, ran into the kitchen where her father was lying prone upon the floor and in her feeble efforts tried to check the ebbings that flowed from the wound with one hand and raising his head with the other one, hoping to see him rally, but it was all in vain, for he soon expired. Dr. Barr was phoned at Clinton and he deputized Henry Slack to hold an inquest. The jury's verdict was that the deceased came to his death from a gun shot inflicted by his own hand. John E. James was born May 18, 1854 near Jacksonville, Ill., and emigrated to Mo., with his parents, Mrs. Nancy and Nelson James, when but a small boy. There ware 5 girls and 2 boys in his father's family at one time but their home was visited by an epidemic and took the girls one by one until the whole five of them were laid in the family graveyard near their home, leaving the 2 boys, John and Ephraim; the last named one is located somewhere in Indian territory but could not be found in time to be notified of his brother's death. Deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. Named as follows: Miss Olivia, who is now teaching her second term of school in one of the public school buildings in East St. Louis; Mrs. W. S. Bowen, who resides in Windsor; Miss Nannie, the only one that is now at home, and Mrs. W. C. Moore, who resides in Calhoun. Some time in the late 80's, Mr. James confessed Christ and was baptized by the late W. W. Warren and taken into the Christian Church, after which there seemed ever to exist in his heart a strong love of friendship for this above named brother. Mr. James loved the open fields and the might woods; he loved the wild pleasures and recreation of the hunt, he loved the blue sky, the flowers and nature, to him, spoke a various language whether peopled in the bud and blossom of spring, or teeming with the wealth of summer, whether clothed in luxury of autumn or wrapped in snows of winter. He was an industrious man of increasing energy and push, a good and kind husband and a devoted father, that which gave his children pleasure being his pleasure and interest. With the exception of a short stay at Butler, he had lived in and near Calhoun a greater portion of his life. On the third day after his death, his funeral took place at his home. As old friends, relatives and neighbors of the deceased arrived, they were given an opportunity to view the remains, which lay in a handsome casket. The features appeared as natural as in life, except that he was somewhat paler. Otherwise, he appeared to be in a deep sleep. After the remains were borne to the hearse, in spite of the piercing northeast wind that was blowing a quite a gale, and of the many persons shivering with cold, a large funeral procession was formed and followed the remains to the Calhoun cemetery, where, with a beautiful burial service, they were laid out to rest.

Maplewood Cemetery, Osage Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clementina M. January died July 27, 1927. Thus ended the wonderful life of a wonderful woman. Aunt Cleminie, as every one who knew her, lovingly called her, was born in Boone county, near Columbia, this state, September 15, 1834.  Had she lived until September would have been 93 years old. She was the daughter of P. M. and Nancy January. She moved to Brownington with her parents in the year 1870.  She professed religion in early life and joined the Presbyterian church in Columbia, later moving her membership to Brownington, living a consistent Christian life until her death. By her works she was known, always thoughtful for the comfort of others. Resigned to the will of the Lord her life has indeed been an example for all. Aunt Clem was never married, as her years of young womanhood were spent in caring for an invalid mother whom she nursed forty years. She had made her home the past twenty years in the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Boles, who passed away within five months. It was more than her frail condition could stand and she commenced to rapidly fail. She was tenderly cared for in her last days by her niece Mrs. George Jackson and great nephew Charles Boles. It was very interesting to hear Aunt Clem talk of the early days. She had watched the country from the ox cart to the airplane. She had interesting relies of early days. She was the last of a Christian family and I know they gladly welcomed her to their Heavenly home where the family circle is now complete. Her funeral service was conducted at her late home, after which her remains were laid to rest beside her loved ones.
