NAYLOR, Alfred
b: Feb 1840, near Fincastle, OH
d: Feb 2 1909, near Spokane, WA

Died at his home near Spokane Wash., Feb 2, 1909, from injuries sustained in a fall, Alfred Naylor, age 69 years. A few days ago a message was received here by Mr. Staples conveying the sad news of Brother Alfred Naylor's death, no particulars being given. From later information it appears that he was precipitated from his wagon by a sudden jerk of his horse while loading baled hay, the fall bursting the main artery of his neck. He quickly regained his feet, not realizing that he was hurt, but soon complained of serious injury. His neighbor, from whom he purchased the hay, hurriedly conveyed him home. He soon lost all consciousness, dying in a few hours without apparent pain. Poor, old grief-stricken wife and three children, who can portray their sorrow for they all loved him with a tenderness truly beautiful to behold and indeed he merited it all! His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Colfax, Wash., his last earthly home, having removed to that State from Clinton, Mo., a few years ago. Brother Alfred Naylor was born near Fincastle, Ohio, early in Feb, 1840, being one of eight children, two of whom survive him, Andrew Naylor, of Carthage, Mo., and Mrs. Lafe Massie, of St. Louis. Early in the Civil War, he enlisted in the 10 Ky., V.O., maintaining a record second to none for bravery and soldierly qualities among his comrades. Later he joined the 38th O.V.I. and participated in all the hardships and many of the engagements of the famous march to the sea and thence to Richmond under the great Sherman. In 1866 he was married to Mrs. Lide Collins, of Repley, Ohio, and in '67 he migrated to Missouri, settling on a farm near Ladue. Three children were born to this union - James, Lilly and Laura, all of whom reside in Washington. Bro. Alfred was a quiet, retiring man and greatly respected by all who knew him. As City Marshal of Clinton, being twice elected, he was a faithful, efficient officer. A kind, true husband, a tender father and a good citizen crowned his life - His stepbrother, Jerome McCoy

Clinton MO - Mrs. S. T. Neill's life journey completed. The end came Tuesday, July 3, at 10:59 p.m., at her beautiful home on East Green Street, where she had been tenderly cared for since May 26, by her beloved husband and their only son Steve. The latter part of July 1927 she underwent an operation for cancer, then a second one, upon indications of its return, then this spring another, when it was known that science could not arrest the terrible disease, so she gave up and planned her home going. For every operation Mrs. Celeste Wilbur had been her beloved nurse. When she took worse in May, Mrs. Wilbur was unable to come on account of illness of relatives, then became ill her self, so Mrs. Neill would consent to no one coming, preferring the cheer, companionship and comfort of her husband and son. Rich are they in memories of this privilege in providing for her comfort. She unfolded to them richness of life in a way they had never known it. One day she awakened out of a deep sleep, and gave Dr. Neill these words, "You see now, the lesson we have learned, we have all aimed too low," which he has kept and treasured in his heart. For eleven days previous to her death she took no medicine. For nine days before her death she suffered no pain - a blessed relief - there had been so much. About three o'clock Tuesday, when her husband wakened from a nap, he saw a great change had come, and as the shadows deepened she went to her last sleep. Miss Cannaissa Adair was the youngest daughter of the late William and Dorcas Fuqua Adair. She was born at the Adair homestead near Shawnee Mound, June 4, 1868. She attended the Lamkin Academy, then the Baird College, from which she graduated in 1891. She was married to Dr. Stephen T. Neill, February 24, 1892. They went immediately to her present home on east Green street, where she enjoyed all those sweet years of companionship and understanding since. To this union one son, Stephen T. Neill, Jr., was given, who is left to comfort his father. She also leaves one brother, Clay Adair, of St. Louis, and one sister, Mrs. Hale Montgomery, Clinton. She was devoted to her home and child. Being a well educated and bright woman, she found much pleasure in the Clinton Shakespeare Club and the Tourist Club. She was also a member of the Baptist Bible Class and the Missionary Society. She was converted in her girlhood, under the ministry of Rev. Menefee, and united with the Baptist church. here she had belonged since. The writer never met her but she gave me a word of cheer or a commendation for something she liked in the Eye. She remembered to do those little kindness for neighbors and friends that make life so worth while. She belonged to the Baird College Alumnae Association and attended the luncheon in June 1927, leaving before the social part for a month's tour of the West with her husband, where they enjoyed the scenic beauties. On her return she underwent the first operation. Her funeral was held on the beautiful lawn Thursday morning. Interment in the family lot in Englewood. She had her house in order. During the last weeks she had her husband get the house entirely cleaned, the curtains taken down and washed so they would be ready for the funeral. She planned her dress, every detail. She was ready to go. Her earthly work was completed.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO - William Raymond Eugene Nelson, 84, Clinton, died Thursday, October 1, 1992, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. - William Raymond Eugene Nelson was born December 23, 1907, in Trego County, Kansas, to Axel and Emma Nelson. He was the third of seven children. Immigrant families relied heavily on their faith and the Nelson's were no exception. After establishing their homes, they built a Swedish Lutheran Church in Ogallah, Kansas, near their farms. It was here that Ray was baptized and confirmed. Growing up in a farm family, he learned the importance of hard work and family values, that we realize now, should be the base of our society. In those days, farming didn't mean just raising crops; you had to be a carpenter, stone cutter, rancher and general handyman. He was talented in all these areas. With his good looks and sense of humor, it was easy for him to win the heart of Helen Lois Campbell. They eloped August 3, 1930, and settled near his family home in Ellis (Ogallah). It was there that they gave birth to and raised their three daughters, Larae Alice, Kathleen Ann and Barbara Ellen. In 1959, Ray, Helen and Barbara moved here to Clinton where he became service manager for his son-in-law at Stayton Chevrolet. He retired in 1970, but wanted to keep busy. He started rasing cattle and enjoyed being outdoors. His 10 grandchildren remember riding out to the farm in his old gray truck and having to help find and count all the cows, especially touching the electric fence. He finally quit raising cattle, but kept active with his daily walks. He cared for his wife, Helen, until she passed away in 1988. His family, Larae and Bob Stayton, Kathleen and Ron Davis, and Barbara and Don Donnohue will miss his joyful and humble spirit. His grandchildren will miss the tickles and fun. And his six and a half great-grandchildren will miss the hugs and smiles he gave so generously. Funeral services were Saturday, October 3, 1992, at the United Methodist Church, Clinton. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery.

Bethlehem Cemetery, Bethlehem Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Mrs. Martha A. Newell was born three miles south of Leesville, henry county. Her ancestors came from Virginia and were among the earliest settlers of this country. Her maiden name was Gilmore and her father went to California in '49. She was an ardent Southerner and could relate many thrilling incidents of the civil war. In her early days she was a school teacher. Shortly after the close of the war she was married to James L. Peelor and to this union were born three children, two of whom survive - Dr. E. C. Peelor of this city, and Mrs. Thomas J. Rogers of Brownington. In 1880 the family moved to Brownington, Mo., where they lived until the death of the husband in 1899, after which she moved to Eldorado Springs. She was again married to Col. J. W. Newell of Joplin, who died November 9th, 1910. She continued to reside at Eldorado until 1919 at which time she moved to Clinton, where she has since resided until her death which occurred Sunday, March 30th, at the home of her stepdaughter, Mrs. W. K. Hurlbut in Joplin, Mo. Mrs. Newell was known all over Henry county and had many relatives as she was kin to the Parks and Logan families in the southeast part of the county. She was a devout member of the Christian church. She always liked boys and for years taught a Sunday School class of boys and young men at Brownington, guiding their spiritual welfare with love. After she moved to Eldorado she again taught boys. She was never idle, but always about her Master's business and ready to do her part. For several years she had been a member of Mrs. Camplin's Sunday School class at the Christian church and if her strength permitted she was always at the service. Her mind was rich in experience, as she had made extensive travels over the United States and always loved books, people and flowers. Her gentle influence will ever be felt. Her funeral services were held Wednesday, April 2nd, at the home of her son Dr. E. C. Peelor. While the body sleeps in the silent city of the dead by the side of her first love in the Bethlehem cemetery, her soul goes marching on in those who cherish her memory.
