Clinton MO - Mrs. Amanda H. Padfield, who had been confined to her bed just a week, passed to her Heavenly Home at 4 a.m. Monday from the Mrs. A. C. Loudermilk home, 324 North Main street. Mrs. Padfield, whose blindness had been complete the past 15 years, had every care and attention that her devoted daughters, Mrs. Loudermilk and Mrs. John Biggs, could give. Since September 1, 1935, when she came to make her home in Clinton, her daughter, Mrs. Loudermilk, had eased her affliction and made her days as cheerful and bright as true filial love could. Amanda H. Fike was born at Mascoutah, Ill., March 7, 1842. She was reared and married at Mascoutah, where, as a girl, she was taught by the old time itinerant school masters and attended the singing schools of a bygone generation. She became a member of the Northern Presbyterian church as a girl, and was always comforted and strengthened by her belief in things eternal, especially was this evident when the curtain of blindness shut her from the outside world and the real beauty of her spirit was superior to her affliction. Amanda Fike and James H. Padfield were united in marriage August 28, 1862, and lived in Illinois, until the close of the Civil War, when they came to Missouri to establish their home, settling on what is now known as the Gregory farm near Lewis Station. Mr. Padfield bought the farm at $5 per acre from Mr. Woods, who had homesteaded the land. Their daughter, Bertha, now Mrs. Biggs of Clinton, was born in Illinois and their other two children, Corrington, the only son, deceased in March, 1922, and Mabel, now Mrs. Loudermilk, were born in Missouri. Mrs. Biggs and Mrs. Loudermilk survive their mother, also two grandsons, Murhl Padfield of Independence, Colo., and Rolla Loudermilk of Clinton and one great grandson, Arthur Clinton Loudermilk of Clinton. In 1885, Mr. and Mrs. Padfield and family moved to a farm 1 1/2 miles northeast of Clinton on highway 52, and in 1890 came to Clinton to educate their children. Here they lived for 13 years returning in 1903 to their farm where they lived until March 1923, when they broke up housekeeping as years were beginning to take their toll of strength and vigor. They went to make their home with their daughters, Mrs. Loudermilk on her farm a mile north of town on highway 13, and Mrs. John Biggs of Clinton. In October of that year to her sorrow of fading sight was added the grief of parting from her husband, whose devotion to his wife had more than 60 years brightened her pathway. A year ago last September Mrs. Loudermilk brought her mother to Clinton, the residence at 324 North Main street becoming their home. Mrs. Padfield was always a woman whose home was her chief and greatest interest. She was an excellent cook, a perfect housekeeper, an expert needlewoman, most of whose stitches were taken not in fine embroidery or on fancy work but in mending garments that preserved them for family use. Her chickens and garden she tended with care, and taught her children thrift and frugality and the wholesomeness of industry as cardinal virtues, that proved assets in their success in life. She was always contented, never complaining, but cheerfully accepting her cross and interested in the neighbors who came to visit her. She was lavish in her appreciation of little kindnesses extended her, took a part in all conversations and fully enjoyed the many friends who were so generous with their time and courtesies. The funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the First M. E. church, according to her request. The body was laid to rest in Englewood.

bur:
Sardis North Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Jan 3 1891 - A telegram states that the funeral of Mrs. Mary A. Palmer has held at Sardis church in Tebo township yesterday afternoon. She lived with her son, Wm. W. Palmer, on the old homestead six miles west of Windsor, which was pre-empted by her husband, Drury Palmer, in the pioneer days of Missouri. She came to this county with her husband in 1831 from Christian county, Kentucky and settled on the farm where her son, Walker now resides. Thirteen children were born to her but only four are living; Mrs. R. L. Avery of this city; Mrs. Matilda Osborn of Macon county; Mrs. Vandergrift of Kansas; and Dr. Gray, of Springfield township. Her husband was shot in his own home by bushwhackers during the war in 1863 and for more than a quarter of a century the deceased has walked alone, but let her light so shine as to lend encouragement to many whose path would else been a dreary one. Surely bright-faced spirits of loved ones gone before will greet her on the other shore and her 78 years of labor in this world of ours is o'er.
