Hildreth had many hobbies and interests. She loved to paint ceramics and made each of her granddaughters a keepsake china doll. Gardening was another of her favorites and she always had a special place in her heart for wildlife--from the flowers that she tenderly cared for, that always gave her home a beautiful blanket of color, to the different species of birds which made their home and raised their young with the same loving tenderness that she nurtured her own family. Funeral services for James Paul, 87, prominent farmer and stockman of the Huntingdale community, were conducted April 21, 1956, at the Huntingdale Methodist Church. Burial was in the Paul Cemetery at Huntingdale. James Paul was born Nov. 3, 1868, at Huntingdale on the farm which remained his home until his death. The last of nine children, he was the son of Squire William and Angeletty Barker Paul, prominent pioneers of Henry County. Squire Paul, who died at the age of 103, was known as one of those successfully restoring civil authority to Henry County after the War Between the States. On May 3, 1917, he married Annie R. Godwin. They had no children but showered their affection on their nieces and nephews. One niece, Mrs. Harry Hutchens, the former Lucie Ann Drake who lost her mother when three years of age, was taken into their home and reared as their own. Devoted to his family and home, Mr. Paul was deeply interested in the young folk, their education, social activities and affairs in their world. His advice was often sought and his teachings, words of wisdom and sound judgment, were most valuable. Typical of him was this sound advice, "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything," or "Talk about things not people." He was most active in the support of schools, as well as all community affairs. In drives for worthy causes, such as Red Cross, etc., the community deeply appreciated his willingness to assist and a check was ready without the asking. He farmed successfully, having a deep interest in his work, and kept in step with modern ideas and practices. He was a staunch Republican, and was a member of the WOW and IOOF Lodges, in both of which he had received 50-year pins. Definitely an individualist, Mr. Paul will be remembered for his honesty, his high integrity, dependability, and his deep regards for his fellowman. Although in declining health for some time Mr. Paul and his wife had accompanied his niece, Mrs. Chester Ake and Mr. Ake to Kansas City April 18 for the day and thoroughly enjoyed the outing, returning home by 5:00 p.m. About 9:00 p.m., he was suddenly stricken and rushed to the Clinton General Hospital where death claimed him at 7:00 the next morning. Surviving are his wife of the home; nephews and nieces, William Paul and family, Uel Paul and family, Mark Paul and family, Mrs. Chester Ake and family, all of the Huntingdale community; Mrs. Harry Hutchens and family, 8727 Sleepy Hollow Rd., Kansas City, Mo.; two cousins, George Paul, Clinton, and Mrs. Mary Beaty, Blairstown; other relatives and a legion of friends. Brothers, Sam died in 1936, and John in 1939.

Clinton MO - John T. Paul, two miles west of Huntingdale, one of Henry County's finest citizens and extensive landowners died at his home at 11:15 Friday, June 16, 1939, venerable in years and rich in experience. He had been confined to his bed since February 10 with the complications of his many years. The end for which he was quite ready came to him peacefully. John Thomas Paul was born February 5, 1859, a half mile west of Huntingdale, the son of Angeletty Barker Paul and that notable pioneer, Squire William Paul, who died in his 105th year and was justice of the peace 52 years. He came on horseback from Kentucky in 1842, crossing the Mississippi at St. Louis, then only a small town. J. T. Paul was educated in Shawnee Township where he grew to worthy manhood following in the footsteps of his splendid father, developing similar ability for he too successfully farmed, raised stock and fed cattle. He was well known all over Henry County, a man of influence, generosity and the soul of honor. In February, 1895, Mr. Paul married Miss Lucy Hampton, who lived near Huntingdale, daughter of David and Mary Beaty Hampton and sister of Dr. J. R. and George Hampton of Clinton. Mrs. Paul died in March, 1897, when their infant son, Mark, was three months old. In January 1910, Miss Dophe Howerton of the Huntingdale neighborhood became his wife and to them one daughter was born, Angeletta. Both son and daughter survive their father, also two grandchildren, John Clinton and Anna Lee, children of Mark, and one brother, James Paul of Huntingdale. Mr. Paul was a notable man, possessed of the finest character and principle. He lived by a strict code with simple, modest tastes. His life and actions attest the love of his family and the esteem of his neighbors, among whom his influence will be felt through future years. Since the death of her mother six years ago, his granddaughter, Anna Lee Paul, had made her home with her grandfather and his love for and interest in this charming girl and his promising grandson whom he had been sending to college were among the happiest experiences of late years. Surrounded with great love and gentle care, this early Henry Countian closed his eyes for his long sleep, a noble, honorable, Christian gentleman. Funeral services were Sunday at Huntingdale and the body was laid to rest in the Paul Cemetery. Consalus & Peck in charge.

Clinton MO, Aug 26 1899 - Richard Paul, youngest son of Wm. Paul, Esq. was born at the old family residence near Huntingdale July 21, 1871 and from consumption of the lungs, departed this life in the house in which he was born at 8:20 a.m., August 20, 1899. His health had been gradually failing for about a year and he has been permanently confined to his bed since the 14th of last April. He was a popular, promising and enterprising young gentleman, of more than ordinary intelligence, and endowed with remarkable presence of mind up to the very hour of his final departure. His father, Squire Paul, is one of the best known citizens of this part of the state and perhaps has contributed more largely of his extensive means toward building churches than any other man in Henry County. About everybody in this part of the world knows eccentric and large-hearted old Brother Paul and all sympathize with him in his bereavement. A short time before his departure, Richard was happily converted and exhorted the young men who stood around his dying bed to lose no time but to make their peace with God without delay. His earnest appeals were not unavailing. God was using the departing young man for His own glory. He was laid to rest in the quiet little hillside cemetery, within a few hundred yards of the house in which he first saw the light of day.

Clinton MO - S. W. Paul, one of Henry County's leading stock feeders, died late Friday afternoon, February 14, at his home north of Huntingdale, where he had spent most of his life. His health had been declining for sometime, and last December he entered the hospital at Kirksville, where he underwent two operations. His condition did not improve, so February 7 he was brought home, where he was tenderly cared for by his family and a nurse. Samuel Wood Paul was born June 9, 1866, on the farm southwest of Huntingdale, where his brother, James Paul, now lives. He was educated in that community, there grew to manhood and bought a farm for himself a few miles northwest of his birthplace. He had one of the most attractive and well improved places in the county. In 1908 he erected on his farm a modern ten room residence, which later burned, and in 1926 he erected another home, a large, well-built, attractive place. All the buildings on the farm were kept in first class condition and were up-to-date and convenient in every way. At his death, Mr. Paul owned a 750-acre farm, most of which was in pasture. He specialized in cattle feeding, also kept a few hogs, and shipped the stock to Kansas City, St. Louis, and Chicago. Many times cattle from the Paul farm topped the market, for Mr. Paul studied carefully the methods best adapted for stock feeding in this part of the state and kept abreast of new ideas, so cattle from this farm invariably graded high. He took a great pride in his work and enjoyed taking care of his farm and stock. Mr. Paul was cheerful, uncomplaining, a good neighbor and friend, ever ready to lend a helping hand. He was rather quiet, but always extended a hearty welcome to friends and delighted to visit with them, for he was a true Missourian in point of always evident hospitality. He attended both the Huntingdale Methodist and the Corinth Baptist churches, taking an active interest in the church work until his health began to fail. He was a member of the Agricola Masonic lodge at Petersburg and had gone into the Shrine. He was one of Henry County's most substantial and respected citizens, and he reared his daughter and sons to have the same fine high qualities of capability, honesty and dependability which he possessed. Mr. Paul was united in marriage January 31, 1893, to Miss Beulah B. Carr, who preceded her husband in death July 10, 1918. To this union were given three children, Miss Leah, Uel and William, all of whom reside on the home place. He also leaves four grandchildren, to whom he was devoted and two brothers, John T. Paul, west of Huntingdale, and James Paul, southwest of Huntingdale. Funeral services were conducted at the Corinth Baptist church Sunday. Interment was beside his wife in the Carrsville cemetery.

They settled in the home community, which has always been his residence. Ill health struck him about nine years ago, and a recurring heart ailment had brought on a continuous decline in health, and periodic stays in the hospital. He had returned to his home from Clinton General on Christmas Eve to be home for the holidays, but was forced to return to the Hospital the following Thurs. and succumbed on Dec. 29. He was a faithful member of the Huntingdale Methodist Church, uniting on Nov. 23, 1947. PAUL, William "Squire"

Clinton MO - Squire Paul, Henry County's Oldest Citizen Dead - Saturday morning, the spirit of Squire Wm. Paul left his earthly body for the Home on High. For many weeks he could hardly be roused and it was known the end was near. For a number of years he had been very feeble and not able to leave the house. During all that time his son, James Paul, and wife tenderly ministered to his every need and filled the life of this good father full of cheer and love. Mrs. James Paul has been like an own daughter in the work of love and ministration. Not only they, but the other sons and their families had a part in the care of this dear good father. He was born in Hardin county, Kentucky, January 5th, 1820, and would have been 104 years old had he lived until the coming January. Mrs. Jas. Paul never forgot to cook the things the Squire loved to eat. He always wanted plenty of fat meat, no matter what else they had. In the spring his favorite dinner was one of greens, hog jowl, buttermilk and corn bread. And what could be better. Nothing can equal it. Squire Paul died in the house he helped hew out of the timber more than three quarters of a century ago. He died on the bedstead with springs made of rope and in the room where the huge stone fireplace had warmed so many years. This home is one of the few remaining early landmarks of the county. Squire Paul was a man of the rugged type of honesty, who practiced the Golden Rule in everyday living. He was well educated, then made use of every talent he had. Among them was a clever wit, that made the life of each person with whom he came in contact a little happier. He loved children and people. He not only loved, but understood them in such a way that when they needed a friend most, they turned to him. After all, life does not amount to much unless those we love depend upon us for things. He always gave advise council and during all his years of service as justice of the peace he never had a case appealed to a higher court or a divorce suit from a marriage he performed. The loving advice and fair decisions counted for more than law with his people. He had no creed or politics in friendship. His friends were in all classes, all religions and all politics. He was a staunch Republican, but never knew defeat in any election, even though his party was in the minority. The Huntingdale Methodist church had in him a real guiding hand. Many churches often fail to keep their promises to their pastors, if they happen not to like them. Not so at Huntingdale, for whether the preaching was good or poor, no preacher ever left with but his full salary, a cheering word, a handshake and friendly counsel. He reasoned if the preacher was poor he needed more help, while if he was good, appreciation of his work should be rewarded, so all come in for an equal share. Would that we all might emulate the Squire's example in this as well as many other things. He never did hard physical work, but instead studied and planned so that his business was always financially successful. In fact he was always willing to help any of his neighbors in the same way. He always had money to loan to those in need. Most of the time he was repaid. But many a time as a borrower had misfortune and trouble the Squire would just "mark out the bill>" This was practical Christianity. He had a keen sense of humor and was a popular speaker on every public occasion. the last public speech he made was in the fall of 1919, when his 100th birthday was celebrated. Many also remember his speech on bond burning day, a few years before that. He often told on his birthday about on that many years ago, when the women of the neighborhood gathered in that little Kentucky home and said: "My what a pretty baby!" This good nature and joking made life a little happier for all. It was the fall of 1919 that the neighbors of Huntingdale decided they would like to celebrate the Squire's 100th birthday, also make it a home coming for the soldier boys. The celebration was held on the Squire's land. Seats, tables, a platform and everything was built, so that all the 5,000 people who came were comfortably seated and well fed. The neighbors paid for the barbecued meat, burgoo soup, pickles and bread. They invited Henry L. Morris, of Vega, Texas, the Squire's former neighbor and good friend, up to superintend the barbecuing of the beeves. Mr. Morris accepted the invitation, the trenches were made and the meat barbecued in a way that none shall forget, it was so delicious. The women of the neighborhood responded with 1,000 pies and 500 cakes, as well as salads and other good thins. It was a day of good fellowship. None could tell which was the happier, the Squire, the boys returned from war or the home folks and their guests. My how glad we were all there. It was a day that has gone down in Henry county history. The funeral services were at the Huntingdale church, which the Squire loved, and where he worked for so many years for his Lord. The church was filled and it was said more than 300 men stood in the yard to pay their respects to this beloved pioneer. Not one person in 10,000 ever sees a man over a hundred years old and it is indeed wonderful that he should live so long. His body was laid in the Paul cemetery on the hill above where the celebration of his 100th birthday was held. The graveside services were in charge of the Clinton and Carrsville Masons. Mr. Paul had seen much of the early life and development of Henry county. He saw this county in almost its primitive state and had not only lived to see the marvelous improvements and advancement of considerably more than half a century, but had done his part towards the building up of Henry county. Mr. Paul recalled many early day conditions, incidents and pioneers. He said Aaron and Samuel Cann started the first store in Huntingdale and were merchants there for a number of years. Mr. Paul remained here during the Civil war and always gave his influence to the maintenance of law and order and did much for the restoration of civil authority after the great conflict ended. He was justice of the peace for 52 years. He had done his part nobly and well and the present and future generations of Henry county cannot do better than to indelibly write the name of this noble pioneer in the imperishable record of Henry county. Squire Paul was the oldest living Mason in Missouri, having been made a Mason about 66 years ago.

Two sons were born - Harold, who has been sick and is 3 years old; Myron, who died on the 20th inst., six months old. C. W. Peck and family came to LaDue last February from Beebee, where he still owns a 120 acre farm, and he bought the dwelling house and livery barn at LaDue, formerly owned by C. M. Adkins. All went well for some months and Mr. Peck and lady, by their Christian lives and amiable manner, grew into the hearts and affections of their fellow citizens. About ten weeks since, Mrs. Peck, who had been nursing a sick child of her sister, Mrs. Steinhammer, who had moved to Clinton, returned to LaDue and was stricken with typhoid fever. Her two children were soon down with the disease. There are hopes that Harold, with proper care, may fully recover. Charles W. Peck is a deeply stricken man. He has been afflicted with deafness and impediment of speech for some years and now the hand of death has snatched from his side all that life held dear to him, except his first born. His wife's mother, Mrs. Garner, carefully and lovingly tended her daughter thru her last illness and was with her, through the seven weeks to the last. Albert Steinhammer, the deceased's brother, attended the funeral from Appleton City, where he is professor of grammar in the Appleton City College. Another brother, Will Miller, came from Illinois in time for the funeral. Burial in Englewood.

He became ill following a vacation trip with his family about 18 months ago, but he tried valiantly to carry on his medical practice until he became so much worse that he was confined to his home and then his bed. bur:
Englewood Cemetery NA-PE, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton, MO - Mrs. Alexander Pengilly passed way at her home on West Gravel street at 8 p.m., Friday of last week, from cancer of the stomach and other complications. She had been in failing health for years but was only bedfast for two weeks. Deceased was born May 28, 1856, on a farm west of Deepwater, where she lived until grown. Her maiden name was Sarah Jane Hughes. She was married 46 years ago to Alexander Pengilly, of Wisconsin, who was an Englishman, having been born in Cornwall, England. They lived in Wisconsin for a short time, after their marriage, then came to Clinton, which was her home for 56 years. Her husband preceded her in death September 25, 1906. Two daughters were born to them: Mrs. Rosetta Hagman, who died Nov. 15, 1910 and Miss Daisy, at home. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Sarah May Hagman, age 14, of Burley, Idaho, whom she raised from a little child and her whole life seemed centered in this little girl. She has missed her very much since she moved to Idaho with her father about a year ago. She also leaves a brother, John F. Hughes, and one sister, Mrs. F. M. Raines, both of Clinton. The daughter, Miss Daisy, gave her the tenderest and most loving nursing a daughter could give, never leaving her bedside for ten days and nights only to get things as her mother needed. Her mother wanted her to be near all the time. She gave her the first dose of medicine and the last drink of water. Mrs. Pengilly was ready and willing to go; her only thought being about leaving her daughter, and during the last days talked about going away and advised her what to do. She was conscious to the last and talked to her dear ones until her spirit was called to the Home above. Mrs. Pengilly was a good Christian woman, having united with the M. E. church in Wisconsin. She loved her home and her neighbors and was happiest, when doing things for the comfort and pleasure of those dear to her. She was lonely many times, as her health was such that she was kept at home so closely, but she loved the birds and flowers and talking to the little ones of her neighborhood, who will so sadly miss her. The daughter and other relatives have the sympathy of all in their sorrow. Funeral services were held at the residence Saturday, and the remains were interred in Englewood cemetery.
