POAGUE, Henry Fewel
b: Mar 17 1868, Benton Co, MO
d: Oct 18 1939, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery PF-RH, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Henry F. Poague, well known attorney in Clinton and Henry County for almost a half century, died at his home, 207 North Washington street, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 18, 1939. Mr. Poague, whose health had not been good the past few years, contracted a cold October 12, which had help him at home several days. Neither he nor his family realized that his condition was serious until late Wednesday afternoon, when about 3:45 a blood clot formed and death laid its hand on the shoulder of the devoted father, fond husband and good citizen. His death was without pain or suffering and his family was with him, as he would have wished, for one of the finest things in his life, that was replete with many admirable traits, was the great esteem in which he was held by his family and the pride and pleasure he found in his children. Henry Fewel Poague, son of Kentucky parents who came to Missouri in 1858, settling in Benton County, after short residences in Lafayette and Johnson counties, where they were substantial farmers, was born March 17, 1868, near Ft. Lyon in Benton Co. As a boy about 16, he left school to help manage the farm of his widowed mother. He was ambitious to continue his schooling and having settled his mind on the law, saved his means to that end and in 1892 graduated from the law school of the Missouri University and passed his state bar examinations. Returning to Benton County, he resumed farming for a year, after which he came with his beloved brother, the late Dr. S. A. Poague, to Henry County and settled in Clinton. They began their professional practices side by side, and this close fraternal bond was broken by the death of Dr. Poague in 1935. August 25, 1895, Mr. Poague and Miss Hattie Haysler, daughter of C. H. Haysler, prominent Clintonian and business man, were married and established their home in Clinton. She survives with their two children, Judge Haysler Allen Poague and Mrs. R. S. Hollingsworth of Clinton, also two grandchildren, Miss Peggy Poague and little Ann Hollingsworth; also two brothers, Fred Poague of Greeley, Colo.; Will R. Poague; one sister, Mrs. Lawrence Crotty, of Clinton. Mr. Poague was an ardent and unswerving Democrat, who moulded many opinions of those he contacted and offered wise counsel in party politics. For many years he was the country chairman of his party and also Democratic chairman of the Sixth Congressional and the 29th Judicial District. For four terms, he served his county as prosecuting attorney, meting out justice with office and wisdom and tempering always the stern interpretations of the law by his dominant humanity, whenever it was possible, especially toward young offenders. He realized the crippling burden of debt carried by Henry County in the heavy railroad bonds that had drained their surplus for years. So advising with the county court he worked out a financial plan whereby the bonds might be retired, and no man felt more satisfaction in that historic bonfire, when the bonds were burned, after payment, than he. But farther reaching still was the effecting of his financing idea, for from it grew the budget system of Henry County. It was further said by various officers in the state that he could handle more prosecutions with better success and less criminal cost than any man holding the office, yet was brief and rigorous at all times. Mr. Poague was also active in other phases of community life. He was a member of the Christian Church, a Mason, and held memberships in the W.O.W. and Modern Woodmen. For many years in addition to his law practice, Mr. Poague handled much real estate, and over a long period was associated in these transactions with Frank Carter, now living in the Rio Grande Valley,m Texas. He was a man of excellent business judgement and through the years accumulated considerable property. An able lawyer and fine counsellor, Henry Poague was ever known as a kindly, charitable man, moderate of speech and softly spoken, ready to excuse his fellowman for any shortcoming or foible and was generously disposed toward all. The flag at the courthouse was at half mast in honor of Mr. Poague Friday and funeral services were at the Christian Church on Friday.

POAGUE, Samuel Allen Dr.
b: May 10 1865, near Ft. Lyon, Benton Co, MO
d: Feb 16 1935, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery PF-RH, Clinton, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - With the passing of Dr. S. A. Poague at his home on East Clinton street Saturday night, at 7:40, the life thread of the oldest and one of the best loved doctors of the community was cut. He had been confined to his bed for the past two weeks and continued to gradually lose strength and consciousness until he slipped away from his children, brothers, sister and other relatives who were there in silent sorrow to attest the unifying love that marks their family. Dr. Poague had not been well since the motor car accident of January 28, 1934, on the highway halfway between Montrose and Deepwater, when his wife was killed and he seriously hurt. After two weeks in bed at that time, he rallied and was up again, at his office and practiced as before but the hurt coupled together with the grief he bore were too much for his strength and years and he gradually failed until death claimed him Saturday. Samuel Allen Poague was born May 10, 1865, near Ft. Lyon, Benton County, of a fine line of ancestry that gave him as a rightful heritage splendid qualities of character and mind that made him the upright citizen whose death is deeply felt in both Clinton and Henry County. His parents were Eliza Christian Keller and George Samuel Poague of Ashland, Ky., who was a son of Nancy Allen Frame and Thomas Hoge Poague, son of Major George Poague, born in Augusta County, Virginia, descendant of General John Poague born in Ireland, 1726, who when coming to America settled near Staunton, Virginia. Dr. Poague, fourth son of his parents, was the oldest boy at home when his father died but he had made up his mind to become a doctor and with this purpose definitely fixed started as a lad of seventeen on his university course at Columbia, Mo. After his first winter he taught the next at Lincoln, Benton County, going back to the State University and then teaching a year at Roseland, before resuming his studies and finishing at Columbia. He then went to St. Louis to the Marian Sims Medical School, now a part of the St. Louis University, where he completed his medical education. Selecting Clinton as a town with a future he came here in the fall of 1891 and began his practice as a partner of the late Dr. Holcomb. They had their office in the Britts building on Franklin street across from the Cozart. Not long after this his mother, sister, Hattie, and brother, William Rhea, came to Clinton and made their home on the Blackford property on the hill, two blocks east of the old Barnhart nurseries. Here and later on East Ohio Dr. Poague also lived until his marriage June 1, 1904, to Ethel Edna Baugh in St. Louis. For a year they made their home over the old diamond block drug store, then he bought the frame cottage at 105 East Clinton street where they continued to live, remodelling it into the handsome English style home it is today. Here their two children, Martha Christina, now Mrs. James Omer Smith and Henry Frederick, were born and reared and now make their home. Dr. Poague was an indulgent father, providing liberally for his children in whom he took great pleasure and pride. Older residents will recall when he, after Dr. Holcomb's death, had his office over Ed Neal's drug store on the east side of the square and later with the late Dr. B. B. Barr on the second floor of the building, north side square occupied today by the J. L. Goss Clothing Company. After some years he moved to the diamond block where he shared his office rooms with the late Dr. Gibbins and managed the Diamond block Drug and Mercantile Company, a joint enterprise with his brother, Henry Poague, which included the old Poague drug store, fountain and large jewelry stock; a second building east with groceries, work clothes and general merchandise; and a third room with pianos, musical instruments and the first Victrolas ever sold in town while on the curb outside was also the first gasoline pump in Clinton. This business was dissolved and in 1918 Dr. Poague bought a building on the south side of the square to which he moved his drug store and established his office on the second floor. Here his son, Henry Frederick Poague was associated with him until they sold out to Mrs. Webb in 1930. In the death of this good doctor, passes a type of the old fashioned country physician whose practice necessitated countless trips, day or night, on all kinds of roads in any sort of weather. And when the call came, the house was never too humble, the distance too great or night too bad for him to respond and give the aid only the beloved family physician could render. He was gentle and kind with understanding sympathy for the suffering he labored most of his life to alleviate. He was unselfish and generous, often asking little or nothing for services rendered, but giving them with like consideration for all. Of his kind acts for the poor and unfortunate many are known and more have passed with him into silence but countless grateful hearts remain to attest his loving kindness. He belonged to the Christian church and the Modern Woodmen; and was for some years a member of the school board; and served two terms as mayor, 1928-32, being chosen to represent his party as the strongest candidate it boasted. He was nominated and then informed of the action by his party, and true to its expectations carried it to success. His memory will ever be green in the hearts of his fellowmen and family for the good he did lives after him. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. James Omer Smith; his son, Henry Frederick Poague; an only sister, Mrs. Lawrence Crotty; two brothers, Henry Fewel Poague and William Rhea Poague, all of Clinton, and one older brother, Frederick Cary Poague, of Greeley, Colo., who was not able to attend the funeral service; also Tommy Poague of Clinton, a member of the family since a young child.

Henry County Scrapbook - Tommie Poague, as he was familiarly known to the whole community, reached the close of his earthly journey, Easter Sunday, April 12, at 2:20 p.m. Monday, April 6th, about 7 p.m. he was stricken with a blood clot on the brain and his entire right side was paralyzed. For two days he remained unconscious, then seemed to rally, and recognized members of his family and though he was unable to speak, showed by his eyes and movements of the left hand the gratitude he felt for their ministrations and the love he bore them all. His strength gradually became less and he sank into oblivion with ease and without pain. Thomas Cude Poague was born December 13, 1886, at Ft. Smith, Ark., and in January 1893, was adopted by Mrs. Eliza C. Poague, making his home on the Poague farm in eastern Henry and western Benton counties, the line running through the farm. He was educated in the Clinton schools and became so endeared to all the family of his adoption by his industry, pleasant disposition and amenable nature, that he was like a real brother to his foster sister and brothers. October 28, 1914, he and Miss Ruth Greenhalge were united in marriage. Theirs was a perfect union, each unselfishly devoted to the other and with all interests and pleasures the same. Tom Poague was one of those exceptional characters who radiated to the world the sunshine that was always in his heart. He shared the joy he felt in every day living with each person he contacted and left that person better for the association. He knew the art of being happy today, he did not wait until tomorrow. From the day he first came to Clinton with his sick mother, who was on her way to her childhood home in Indiana, but who died within two weeks, leaving the little lad homeless, his life was a blessing to all who shared theirs with him. His devotion to "Grandma" Poague was beautiful to see and the warmth of his sunny soul and genuine smile illuminated his own life and reflected itself in that of others. Being a natural mechanic, Tom first found work with the Clinton Gas and Water company, in the gas department, where he was ever courteous and efficient. Following a change in ownership he went into the plumbing business and by his conscientious and excellent work was depended upon by many home owners to do all their plumbing. In 1930 he bought a home site south of Clinton on Highway 13, and each year he and his wife added some improvement to the pretty cottage they erected there, or to the yard to make it more home like and comfortable. Ever industrious and hard working he filled all his waking hours with activity, going beyond his strength in the opinion of his doctors. He was a member of the Franklin street Methodist Church and his life extolled his Christian character. He belonged to the W.O.W. fraternal order, where he will also be greatly missed. He is survived by his widow, H. F. and w. R. Poague and Mrs. Lawrence Crotty, all of Clinton. The funeral services were conducted at the Franklin Street Methodist Church on Tuesday. Consalus and Peck in charge.

Clinton MO, Mar 19 1887 - R. A. Portis died Sunday night at 10 after an illness of only a few days, of typhoid pneumonia. He came to the county about 12 years ago and was a native of North Carolina. His wife died two years ago, followed in a few months by an infant son, leaving him with five little girls and one boy, the youngest 8 years old. He was an earnest Christian and was always cheerful, working hard to keep his family together. Only a few days before his death, he was telling a friend his plans for improving his garden and making the most of his few acres of ground to supply the early market. His little home is in the suburbs of the southeast part of town, where he could always be found busy when not on a necessary errand or marketing his vegetables and fruit. Mr. Portis was over fifty years of age. He had a dependent family and one daughter sadly afflicted from birth. It seems the trial of life must have been particularly great for him but, with him to labor was to pray. Buried by his wife in Oak Grove. (Later News Article: S. Jones, who was appointed guardian for the Portes children, has found homes for four, as follows: Rachel E. will live with Mrs. Henderson, the milliner; Annie L. with Henry Lane; Myrtle M. with Mr. Richards, the engineer of the pottery works, and Charley R., with a Mr. DeWitt.
