Englewood Cemetery RI-SA, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Oct 17 2003 - Bernice L. Rice, Clinton, died October 3, 2003, at the Golden Valley Hospital at the age of 96. She had resided for the past two years at the Gran Villas of Clinton. Bernice Robison was born September 22, 1907, near LaDue. She was the youngest of seven children of Thomas Wilkinson Robison and Mary Laminda Moreland Robison. Several themes run very consistently throughout Bernice's life. She loved the Lord. Her life revolved around the church calendar. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was happiest when. she was helping someone. And she was very determined. When she made up her mind to do something, you'd save yourself a lot of time and effort by just getting out of the way. On May 8, 1927, Bernice married Bernard Rice. He was Bill to most everyone else, but was William to his wife. During their 65 years together they worked very hard. But they always made time for fun and friends, too. Their years together revolved around their church, family, friends. They both loved jokes (occasionally practical jokes) and would sometimes tell the same story together, much to the amusement of the listeners! Bernice was a devoted mother and was very proud of her children, Don and Bonnie. She was involved in their church and school activities. especially 4-H. In 2002 she received the "Most Experienced Volunteer" award from 4-H and was very. proud of that. When Bernice was in her mid 40's, she developed a burning desire to be a beautician. So, of course, she did it! After 10 years, she and Fern Cook opened a shop together. She thoroughly enjoyed her career and retired after 25 years in that field. She loved living in the house on South Second Street and threw herself into renovating it. She was proud of her creation. And enjoyed having lots of guests in the house. And it was good to be a guest in that house, because Bernice was a wonderful cook! Bernice doted on her grandkids, David, Diane and Allen. The arrival of her great-grandchildren ushered in a real renewal for her. Derek, Ryan, Katherine and Laura were her joy. Mamaw would hang out with the kids for as long as they were willing. Bernice was blessed to enjoy so many of her hobbies until her last days. She loved to play the organ at Drake's Chapel and at her home at the Gran Villas. She never learned to read music, but could play any tune that she knew. She also loved to travel and took lots of car trips in her life. She and Bill spent four summers with dear friends in Florida. Bonnie took her in recent years to New Mexico twice. Colorado was a frequent destination. Although it was much more about family and friends than travel, she spent last Labor Day Weekend at Bennett Springs with lots of family and friends. In 1999 she was named the Woman Of The Year for this district by the United Methodist Church. She also just loved to visit and keep up on people's lives. She was blessed by many visitors, including thoughtful nieces and nephews who always stayed in touch with "Aunt Bern". She was a faithful contributor to several charities, having a soft spot in her heart for children in need and veterans groups. She was generous with her time and talent and many little children did not go to bed hungry because of her generosity. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, Charles A. Robison, William R. Robison, Robert L. Robison, Mary Jane Robison, Olga Hull and Pauline Marks, and by her husband of 65 years, B.V. "Bill" Rice, and her son-in-law. Paul Pearce. She is survived by her children, Don Rice and his wife, Cleo, Clinton, and Bonnie Pearce of Kansas City; her grandchildren, Allen Rice, David Pearce and his wife, Carol, and Diane Barrow and her husband. Ed. all of Kansas City; her great-grandchildren, Derek and Ryan Pearce and Katherine and Laura Barrow of Kansas City. Certainly we will miss Bernice. Despite her age, she was active with her family and her community. She lived a long and happy life filled with purpose and helped so many people along the way. But we know she did not fear her own passing and is truly happy with the Lord right now.

Calhoun MO - Mrs. Richardson's Obituary - Emma May Finks, daughter of Milton D. and Betty F. Finks, was born near Calhoun, Missouri, June 21, 1875, and finished her earthly pilgrimage triumphantly at the family home in Calhoun, December 9th, 1927 at 10:15 a.m. She was converted and joined the Methodist chuch, South, soon after she was 12 years of age. She united in marriage with B. F. Richardson, April 4th, 1900, and to this union five children were born, being William, who preceded her in death eight years; Clay, Hazel, Betty and Lillian. Her husband, children, and her sister, Mrs. C. N. Richardson of Hughesville, and her brother, L. N. Finks of Muskogee, Okla., were all present at her passing. But she has builded a monument of memory that will live on forever, for she was at all times a good neighbor, a true friend, a patient loving wife and mother; never complaining about her suffering, but always trusting God. Calling loved ones and friends to her bedside, she gave them wonderful words of love, advice and comfort which can never be forgotten. Her beautiful thoughts were: "May the Sunlight of His love shine through the canopy of Heaven, making your days happy on this green garden of His." A dear one from us had gone, A vioice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in her home Which never can be filled. She longed for the land where partings are o'er, And death and the tomb divide hearts no more. Of what a glorious exchange for a Christian to leave this world of sin, suffering and temptation for the Holy atmosphere of Heaven. Thus closes a beautiful life. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, December 11th, at the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Calhoun cemetery by the side of her son William.

bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Mrs. M. E. Richardson died at her home in Calhoun Saturday, May 19th. She had been in failing health for many years, and death came as a release of early sufferings. Mary Elizabeth Holland was born March 26th, 1840, near Morgantown, West Va. She was a delicate girl. She attended the subscription schools when she was able, but most of the time had a private tutor. Nobody would have thought she would have lived to be 88 years old. She was married March 20th, 1862, to Francis Blackshere Richardson, on the old Virginia homestead. In April, 1869, her husband came to Henry county, putting in a crop on what was then known as the Bledsoe Mound, near Lucas. That fall he returned to West Virginia and in October that year, with their two small boys, they came to Henry county, which had since been their home. At first the family lived with friends until March, when they moved to a tenant house on the farm, living there several years, then bought a farm near George school, until they purchased a farm two miles west of Calhoun, where they built an attractive modern home and reared their family. After their sons were married they rented the farm and moved to Clinton living there until their health became so poor, their sons had them move to Calhoun where they could care for them. Her husband died several years ago. In her girlhood she made a number of applique quilts of beautiful and rare designs. this was the way the young girls amused themselves then, instead of running around like now. One is put together with muslin, which cost 75 cents a yard, which shows how cheap by comparison muslin is today. She is survived by the following children: L. L. and B. F. Richardson, Calhoun; L. C. Richardson, Calhoun; C. N. Richardson, Hughesville. She also leaves a number of interesting grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was a devoted member of the M. E. church, doing much good in the cause of her Master. She is the last member of her family to go. Her funeral services were conducted at the Calhoun Methodist church. Interment in the Calhoun cemetery beside her husband.

bur:
Calhoun Cemetery, Tebo Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Dec 1919 - A Young Life Ended - The home of Brice F. Richardson and wife of Calhoun, had the saddest Christmas of all their lives last week, because the death Angel had visited their home and took their eldest son, William Finks Richardson. He had been in poor health for some months and had lost his appetite completely. He gradually lost strength, as he was unable to eat. The case baffled home physicians and Dec. 17, his father took him to a Kansas City hospital. On examination there, it was found that he had so little blood that a transfusion of blood would be necessary to build up his strength before he could be operated upon for tumor of the stomach. So his mother, brother and sister, uncle and cousins all went, willing to give their blood that this dear young life might be spared. It all availed nothing and the night of Dec. 23rd his spirit left its earthly dwelling place. He was born 17 years ago last summer at the home of his maternal grandparents, M. D. Finks and wife, west of Calhoun. Then afterwards he lived several years at the home of his parental grandparents, F. B. Richardson and wife west of Calhoun. So when a tiny chap he endeared himself in their hearts and the blow of his death falls almost as heavy on them as on his parents, as this is the first death in their family of four sons and 15 grandchildren. William moved to Calhoun, with his parents, B. F. Richardson and wife, when his father became the cashier of the People's Bank at Calhoun. He got his grade school education there and started to High school, when he came to Clinton about the middle of last year, as he was eager to make four years work in three, so he could go to college, then take up his life work. He was more than ambitious and when so ill, was eager to have the operation, so that he could get back to school and do and study the things he loved. He was of the best type of young American manhood - gentle in manner, yet with high spirits, possessing an indomitable courage. He was converted several years ago and united with the M. E. church at Calhoun. He put into every day practice the teachings of the Master and his life became one of real ministry by this we mean helpfulness. He could not bear to wound another's feelings and would not see an animal hurt or abused. When about he was ever ready to lend his hand to any task. In speaking of him his grandmother said: "I shall miss him so. When he was here, he always wanted to help me with the dishes or sweeping or anything." He was held in the highest respect by his comrades at school, as they knew he was ever on the right side. His face showed the intellectual type with his wide, high forehead. He was eager to learn and very studious, grasping the hardest problems quickly. He had the highest respect and esteem of his teachers, and at the time of his death was a Junior in the Clinton High school. Words cannot comfort these dear loved ones in this hour. Only the Comforter can ease the pain. He leaves both father and mother, one brother, Clay, three sisters, Hazel, Bettie and Lillian, all at home. His body was brought to Calhoun and on Christmas day and laid to rest in the Calhoun cemetery.

bur:

John Rickett, brother of Charles Rickett, undertaker at Brownington for many years, gained freedom from mortal suffering at 11:05 a.m. Nov. 16, at the Rickett home in Brownington where he had lived several years, part of them spent in invalidism, always tenderly cared for by his brother who took him a few weeks preceding his death to a hospital at Humansville. There he remained about five weeks, seemingly much improved on his return home, but became worse the Thursday before his death, the burden of affliction becoming too great for human endurance, and his soul winged its way home to the Master. He was born March 27, 1871, the second son of John and Sarah J. Rickett, who lived near North Station in Henry County. He spent his childhood there but traveled over the western United States extensively in early manhood. He settled in Canada where he homesteaded in the then unsettled country. He came home in 1917 to be with his mother in Brownington and operated a garage about nine years; then since the death of his beloved mother, he and his brother, Charles, made a home for each other. He united with the Christian Church at Lilly, Illinois, at an early age, later moving his membership to Brownington where it remained until his death. He patiently bore his years of suffering, for his was an ardent Christian spirit. His finial love was equaled only by his affection for his brother, the two being drawn closer together by the hand of Death, which took away their brothers and a sister, then the beloved mother. Deceased had a brilliant mind and took a keen interest in all world affairs, especially those pertaining to government. As he had lived in Canada, he was familiar with its laws as he was with those of his native country. Reading was a pleasure to him, and he gleaned much from the high type of literature from which his keen mind retained a large store and enabled him to counsel wisely the many who came to him for advice. Friendship held for him a deeper meaning than to many, and he was sought again and again, ever willing to share another's burdens and help whenever possible. He leaves his younger brother, Milton, in Canada, another brother, Charles, and one sister, Mrs. C. D. Taylor, both of Brownington, to mourn his passing. Funeral services were conducted last Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Brownington Christian Church by Rev. S. W. Walkup, pastor there, who, at request of deceased brother, Charles, who is ill, used a text in keeping with his brother's life, My Grace Is Sufficient For Thee. Burial was at Maplewood Cemetery in the family plot.
