RUCKEL, George Baxton
b: Jan 12 1872, Rose Hill, Johnson Co, MO
d: Oct 6 1943, Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO
bur:
Page Cemetery, Bogard Twp, Henry Co, MO
The Missourian, October 14, 1943 - George B Ruckel Dies Near Creighton Prominent Farmer of Sherman Township Died Friday From Hospital Illness - The death of George B. Ruckel removed a well known and prominent farmer and stockman from the community west of Creighton who had lived there many years and stood as a landmark in that community. George Baxton Ruckel, eldest child of George W. and Ellen Smith Ruckel, was born in Rose Hill, Johnson County, Mo., January 12, 1872 and departed this life October 6, 1943 at the age of 71 years, 8 months, 24 days. When he was four his parents moved to a farm near Creighton, Cass County, where he lived with them until he established a home of his own. Mr. Ruckel and Miss Elizabeth L. Little were united in marriage April 10, 1912 at the bride's home, near Blairstown, Johnson County. Her parents were John and Harriett Quick Little, pioneer residents of that community for many years. The marriage service was read by the late Rev. D. W. Britton, a will known and beloved Methodist minister. Hardly more than two months had elapsed when a terrible tornado swept away nearly all their possessions and he and his wife barely escaped with their lives. He set to work, and steady and uncomplaining labor built up the fortune he had lost. His home was his kingdom and he was tireless in his efforts to maintain and improve it. He was a good neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand. he was the soul of integrity, and one of those rare persons whose word as good as his bond. He was a peaceable nature, never entering into controversy or taking up cause against a neighbor. He liked to attend Sunday school and other services of the church and had a great respect for the Bible and its teachings. Saturday, October 2, he underwent surgery at St. Luke's hospital, Kansas City. He seemed to be recovering rapidly, Wednesday evening when his wife went to her lodging she was most hopeful for his ultimate recovery. Between 7 and 8 o'clock his spirit took it's flight with no sadness or farewell. Besides his faithful companion of over thirty years he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ida Hopkins, Yakima, Wash., and Mrs. Chas. Wade, Creighton, Mo., and his brother, Clarence Ruckel of Creighton. His younger brother, Mark B. Ruckel passed away in 1917. Also he leaves four nephews, seven nieces, two great-nephews, one great-niece and one great-great niece, for all of whom he had a deep affection. To those nearest and dearest are added many other relatives and friends who will always cherish the memory of all the sterling qualities of George Ruckel. An honest man's the noblest work of God. The funeral service was conducted Saturday afternoon at the home of Rev. Ira McClymonds of Knobnoster, Mo. Flower bearers were nieces, Misses Eleanor Wade and Clara Ruckel, Mrs. Harold Jenkins and Mrs. John Koch. Interment was in the Page Cemetery.

She had one sister, Cheryl, who died at 16 months of age after battling leukemia. Among highlights of her childhood were her birthday celebrations that usually fell on "Mule Day" at the Missouri State Fair with cake and ice cream in the mule barn. Marcia attended grade school and high school in Calhoun. She graduated in 1962. She then attended William Woods University in Fulton and graduated in 1964 with an Associate of Arts degree. After graduation she enrolled in the Electronics Institute of Kansas City and became skilled in computer science. Upon completion of her training, she accepted a position with Mobile Oil. In 1965, she married John Frank Rufenacht of Deepwater. She then moved to Seattle where Frank was stationed in the U.S. Army. She rode the ferry to work each day while continuing her employment with Mobile Oil. She also visited the Cascade Mountains and went to British Columbia with her uncle, Veryl. The couple moved back to Missouri after Frank's tour of duty, where Marcia worked for General Services Administration (GSA) while Frank completed his college degree. The couple then spent a year in Topeka and another year in Wichita. The couple later moved back to Grandview and Marcia resumed her job at GSA as a computer analyst. Marcia was thrilled to see her family grow when Mindy married Robert Smith in 2000 and she welcomed triplet grandsons, Elijah, Aldan and Owen, in September 2007. Clinton MO - Mrs. Wm. Rusk died Monday, April 22, at her home near Deepwater, following a brief illness which began with a stroke the week before. Mary Sarepta Harnit, daughter of Samuel and Sara Cory Harnit, was born September 9, 1846, at Edenberg, Pennsylvania, and was 88 years, 7 months and 13 days at her death. She was married to James Swayze in 1867 who died in 1871. To this union were born three sons, one dying in infancy. The other two, J. M. Swayze of Waverly, Kans., and Ira T. Swayze of Kansas City, survive. In 1878 she was married to Wm. Rusk and came to Missouri to make her home. Mr. Rusk departed this life 12 years ago, the same date and almost the same hour that she passed away. Two children blessed this union, Sara Rusk Faris, deceased, and W. H. Rusk, who lives near the old home. There are 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was the youngest of a family of seven and the last of her family. She made a confession of her faith in Christ in early childhood and grew up under rigid discipline of the Christian church, but when she came to Missouri she united with the Presbyterian church at Westfield in order to labor with her husband in the Lord's cause. She gave most unselfishly to any work that pertained to the following of the Master. She was a gifted musician and gave generously of her talent in that way. She was a militant worker in the temperance cause and as an ardent prohibitionist, believed in voting as she played. Her greatest ambition was to help make the world a better place in which to live. For many years she had been an active worker in the W.C.T.U. also a member of the G.A.R. While her going marks the closing forever of a home that always had an open door for friends and strangers alike, its memory will live long in the minds of the many who have enjoyed its hospitality and influence. Mrs. Rusk had a busy life. The duties of her home were many. She not only reared her own four children, but the four motherless children of her husband. Several others had found a home at various times under her roof. However, with all her tasks she found time to go outside her home to assist her friends and neighbors in any way she could. She was never too tired or too busy to minister to the suffering and the dying. She had felt for several years that her life's work was finished and asked God daily to take her home. It can be truly said by all who knew her that she was a wonderfully devoted mother. The funeral was preached at the Deepwater Presbyterian church Wednesday of last week. Burial was in Englewood.

Clinton MO - William Rusk, whose tired body we consigned to its rest last week, was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. Was born in 1834, of staunch, old blue-stocking, Presbyterian blood. Located in 1868, with one or two other families on the prairie, six miles southwest of where Deepwater is now located, and continued to live there until called to his Eternal Home. He was a charter member, and first Elder in the Westfield church, over the line in St. Clair county. This church did a great work in establishing law and order, as well as Christianity in that "Younger Family" neighborhood. By reason of many removals, it so happened that Uncle Billy was not only the first, but also was the last Elder in the church. A movement was started the very Sabbath of his departure, looking to repairing the church building and also to revive the church itself that it may again become the power for good, for which it once was so well known. In the campaign of 1880, Mr. Rusk identified himself with the Prohibition party, and he and his good wife were loyal and earnest members of, and workers in the W.C.T.U. and happily both lived to see the fruition of their great labors and sacrifices in the abolition of the nefarious liquor traffic. Mr. Rusk was an inspiration, not only to his local community, but also to the county, state and national workers in that great cause. Few men have ever lived so long, so quietly, so unobtrusively and yet so effectively, as did the subject of this sketch, and the outpouring of the entire community to his funeral, was a most telling evidence of how effective was that life.

RUSS, Martha A. TORBUT JENNINGS

Kind companion and dear mother thou art gone. No more to dwell with us, And hast thy kindred spirit flown? The loss--how great to us! Gone - From the home circle of William Russ, in Speedwell township, February 20. Mrs. Martha A. Russ, a kind wife and a loving mother. Mrs. Russ, once and so lately known in the society of Clinton, was born in Knoxville, Tenn., May 29, 1849. Her maiden name was Martha A. Torbut. In the early part of her life she came to Clinton, and in 1863 was married to Robert A. Jennings. Unto their union were born five children, three girls and two boys, all of whom survive their mother. In 1885 she was married to her second husband, William Russ, who will be long and kindly remembered by his friends and the citizens of Clinton as the foreman of the Tebo flouring mill. Unto this union were born one boy and one girl, the latter having preceded her mother beyond the skies. Mrs. Russ was for many years a member of the Missionary Baptist church. She leaves unusual regret in the minds of all who knew her virtures that so kind a neighbor, loving wife and gentle mother is lost to her noble husband, amiable daughters and kind sons, who have the sympathy of all who know them. Mrs. Russ died as she had lived, in the triumph of a living faith. When she called her husband and children, one by one, to bid them farewell and commend them to the keeping of a loving Savior, she calmly looked death in the face, and every action seemed to say - If this be death, I soon shall be From sin and sorrow and danger free And my ransomed soul, from earth roam Far, far above the starry dome. Call not back the dear wife and mother Anchored safe where storms are over, For we will try and trust to find her In our Heavenly Father's mansion fair. - From the Osceola, MO. paper : She died Feb. 20, 1894 She is buried in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in St. Clair Co. She died 2 years after moving from Clinton. The Clinton Eye, Saturday, February 24, 1894: Mrs. Wm. Russ a former resident of this place, died at her home near Schell City, Tuesday. She was a most estimable lady and her death is universally regretted. For many years her husband held a responsible position in the Tebo Mills, but failing health caused him to move to his farm. (Her children were: Decatur Jennings, Elizabeth J., Emma A., Nettie A., John Claude Jennings and Walter Russ, a daughter died young and her name is not known at this time.)

Rebecca Ann Russell, the widow of Richard Russell, deceased, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 1929, at her late residence on North Washington street, Clinton, Mo., at the ripe old age of 84 years, 4 months and 20 days. She was the widow of Richard Russell, who departed this life in February, 1900, a very generous, lovable and kindly man, and who was loved by all his neighbors and friends. Mrs. Russell, since the death of her husband, had lived in Clinton and was much attached to her church, being a member of the Presbyterian church which she attended with much regularity until she had grown too feeble to attend, yet she felt that she should be there, to lend what little help she could in the cause of the master. What noble ideas mothers of her age had, of the life one should live here, that to so live, they would inherit eternal life over there. These mothers, such as she, are fast passing away. They were your mothers and mine, such love, inspiration and hope they had for us, their constant teachings, was directed towards the pathway that ever led to the promise of eternal life. The services were held by the pastor of the Presbyterian church Friday, February 1, and interment was in Englewood cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside her beloved husband. All her children living, were at her bedside when she passed away - George S. Russell, William Russell and Mrs. Jas. H. Wilson, and a number of her grandchildren.
