SHOMAKER, Mamie
b: Aug 1885
d: Feb 6 1903, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Bear Creek Cemetery, Bear Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Feb 1903 - Mamie is Gone - The black winged angel of death has again visited the home of Bud Shomaker, snapping the strong cords of parental love, taking from him the one whom he most trusted. Surely the hand of affliction has been laid heavy upon this home. Some three years ago his wife was taken from him leaving the care of his family upon his oldest daughter, Maude, who faithfully discharged her duty in caring for her younger brothers and sisters. One year ago Jan. 15th, Maude was taken from the home, and once again a sad gloom was cast over the home, thus made desolate by her death. Now the care of the family and household fell to Mamie the oldest daughter. Well and faithful did she perform the duties entrusted to her, ever looking and caring for the little ones that were left without a mother. Nine months ago the hand of affliction cane upon Mamie. Little did she think at this time that her life would be taken from her so soon. Hemorrhage of the lungs was the first signs, then followed with other symptoms until it soon developed into consumption of short duration. Realizing that she could not get well she tried to be as cheerful and pleasant as she could, always seeming pleasant to those who came to see her. Within a few hours of her death she told those that were with her that she could not live but a little while and wished that the Lord would take her and thus her suffering. Surely she was a faithful Christian sufferer. Death came to her at eleven o'clock, Feb. 6, 1903, age 18 years. Thus ends the life of one so young, but he who is wiser than us all has said "Suffer it to be so for when I bring a cloud a bow shall be in the cloud to give place to sorrow and grief." May this heart broken family gaze with delight upon this beautiful bow of promise. Her remains were laid to rest in the Bear Creek cemetery 'mid the sorrowing crowd of those who loved her most.

Clinton Missouri, Feb 22 1902 - Mrs. Shoemaker of Montrose, who would have been 72 on February 19, died suddenly at her home about 7 p.m. Monday, the 17th. She had moved to town and was keeping house and taking care of three small girls, daughters of her son, "Bud" Shoemaker, who lives in Bear Creek township, while the girls were attending the Montrose school. The two smaller ones had gone to bed upstairs. The other girl was in the room with her grandma and the old lady sat down by the grate to warm her feet before going to bed. Suddenly she fell out of her chair and the girl in the room ran to her and pulled her away from the fire or it is likely she would have taken fire and burned. She called the children from upstairs and then ran for help. Dr. Wallis was summoned, but could afford no relief and she died. The Dr. pronounced it heart trouble. Her son was notified and came at once and a message was sent to two other sons who live in Clinton, which they received just in time to catch the train due at Montrose at 9:30 p.m. Two daughters living out west in Colorado were notified but because of recent snow storms they were afraid to start for fear they would get snowbound. The body was taken to Bear Creek Cemetery on what would have been her 72nd birthday. It was a bad day for a funeral, as it snowed nearly all day.

Clinton MO - Charles H. Shopp died at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday, May 4 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Mae Russ, on Artesian Ave. Mr. Shopp had been a sufferer from heart trouble the past nine years, having become worse the past two weeks and of recent weeks was known to be in a critical condition. He had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Marion Steward of near Coal when he became so ill that she realized her father should be near a doctor, so she brought him to Clinton Monday, since which time he had been confined to his bed and slept away just before the dawn of a new day. The end, though feared, came sooner than his daughters anticipated. Charles Hershey Shopp was born December 4, 1871, at Plattsmouth, Neb., the son of sturdy Methodist farming families and as a boy began to learn the art of tilling the soil in a productive, progressive way. He was married September 6, 1899, to Miss Ella Chaffin of Imperial, Neb., and five children were given them, all being born in the home where first their father had seen the light. One son and daughter were lost to them in infancy and one son and two daughters survive their father, Mrs. Shopp dying in 1921 at Imperial, Neb. Mr. Shopp came to Missouri in 1926 and from about 1928 to 1932 was employed on the Bob Barr dairy farm in Independence, where he was valued in various capacities, for he was not only a good farmer with an embracing knowledge of livestock but a good mechanic, blacksmithing and carpentering being both hobbies and side lines. Mr. Shopp was well known in the Garland community where he had worked for many farmers in their fields or as mechanic. He became a Baptist while he was in Independence. He was a good and kindly man, generous with all his talents and material assets, ever ready to make a piece of furniture, or an implement for some neighbor who needed a bit of help. A devoted father, his children were loving and considerate and blessed his declining years. Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Mae Russ of Clinton, Mrs. Marion Steward of Coal, and one son, Charles R. Shopp, of Imperial, Neb., who will arrive Thursday for the funeral. Six grandchildren also remain. Services will be conducted by the Consalus and Peck Service at the Funeral Home Friday if no change in present plans are made.

Clinton MO - Mrs. Harriet Elizabeth Shorthose, the subject of this sketch, was born near Richmond, Va., May 15, 1837. Her family name was McCaleb, which indicates that her ancestors came from Ireland. She attained the high age of 82 years, 2 months and 18 days. For many years she was known in her family circle and her community as Grandmother Shorthose, and was admired by everybody as a good woman. At the age of 15 years she had become a Christian and a member of the Christian church. Her children and friends tell of her that her life was a life of consistent Christian service. She was always a great bible reader and through her years became so well acquainted with the Book that it was a daily companion of hers and a constant guide and comfort. On April 11, 1856, at McLean City, Illinois, she was married to Herbert Shorthose. To this union were born 12 children, 6 sons and 6 daughters. Of these children 5 daughters and 4 sons are living. About 37 years ago, her home was made at Brownington, Mo., and here among her children she lived almost continuously. Her sons: William H., James, Charles and the daughters - Mrs. Robert Fifer, Mrs. M. J. Kerrigan, Mrs. E. J. Slattery and Mrs. Val McElwee, live at Brownington; George lives in Kansas City, and Mrs. Lizzie Gillespie, lives at ElDorado Springs. All these children, 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, one half brother, Andrew Lewellen, Lima, Ohio, and one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Waffelle, at Lawrence, Kas., and many friends mourn the passing away of this good woman. Her husband's death occurred July 9, 1898, reaching an age of 76 years. As Grandmother Shorthose had reached high age, she could converse very interestingly on events of our country's history. These events were really interesting to her, for she had lived through them. She could thus converse about the Mexican war, the Civil War, the Spanish-American war and also the Great War; the United States presidents from the first Harrison to Wilson, were all characters that figured in the country's history during her life time. One of her grandsons, Russell McElwee, was a soldier in France. It was her fond hope that she might life to see his return. All through the years, her health had been of the best until this spring when signs of decline became apparent. Among her loved ones, ministering to her comfort, she passed the last months very cheerfully, but as one prepared to obey the summons when they should come and willing to abide, if such should be God's will. To the writer of this sketch, who visited her a number of times, she made the remark, "82 years seems a long time, but it is only a short time now that it is past. Life is sweet. I shall be glad to live on awhile, but am willing to go when God wants me." As remarkable was her life, so was the close of her career. She had seemingly recovered from her late affliction and her family and many friends had gathered at her late home on Saturday evening of Aug. 2nd, and at her request a number of her favorite songs were sung. All her children except one, were present. After an evening of music in which "Shall we meet you up there" and "It is well with my Soul" were sung, this family reunion came to a close at about 12 o'clock. It was the last one for Grandmother Shorthose on earth. The family retired except the daughter-in-law, who watched at her bedside. Soon some moaning was heard and in about an hour her condition grew more serious. Soon the messenger of death called and she passed away peacefully at 3:15. Let us think that she heard the invitation "Well done, Grandmother, come up higher." On Monday evening, Aug. 4th, her funeral services were held at the family home in South Brownington. Her remains were laid to rest in the Brownington cemetery to await the resurrection morning.
