Clinton MO - Benjamin Crawford Simes died at the Clinton General Hospital at 3:00 Sunday afternoon, January 7, 1945, after an extended period of failing health. His last real illness began on December 4 when he was taken to the home of his son, Ben C. Simes, Jr., but on the 81st birthday of the long-time business leader of Clinton, December 30, he was taken to the General Hospital. Since boyhood Ben C. Simes has been closely connected with the business life of Clinton, and he has been a leader in every civic movement, his judgement, tempered with the wisdom of many years, advising his friends of the proper course to follow in civic matters. He was born in Sweet Springs, Mo., on December 30, 1863, the son of Benjamin Schreeves and Louisa Voorhees Simes. The parents had come to Missouri from Ohio, their native state. They moved to Clinton and Benjamin Crawford Simes, then only 15 years of age, got a job as clerk in the William Cox dry goods store getting his first experience in the business world in which he was later to become so outstanding. He went into business with his brother-in-law, Will Vaughan, having a shoe and harness stock on the north side of the square, a business that became one of the Clinton leading commercial firms. In 1896, Mr. Simes bought out the interest of his partner and the store name of Ben C. Simes was established in Clinton and has remained outstanding throughout the years. Mr. Simes was progressive and added other lines to the shoes, harness and leather goods, but he was always conservative and looked ahead on every step forward. He retired from the store in 1940, turning this business over to his son, Ben C. Simes, Jr., and devoted his attention to the harness and leather goods, over the store. He was married December 26, 1888, to Miss Jessie Brown, who died in 1937. There were four children, Zadelle, who was Mrs. W. E. Farmer, who died in 1930; Mrs. Tom Wilson and Mrs. Lorraine Littlefield, and Ben C. Simes Jr. There are eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The grandchildren are: Lieut. Col. W. C. Farmer, at Aberdeen, Md.; Pvt. Wallace E. Farmer, at an army camp in Nebraska; Mrs. Paul Schmidt, of Harrisonville; Pvt. Ben Farmer, in an army camp in Kentucky; Mrs. Robert C. Walker, Jr., and Mrs. John C. McDonald, Jr., of Dallas; Mrs. Roy C. Speer and Ben C. Simes III, both of Clinton. There are two brothers and sisters, Richard M. Simes, of Encino, California; Charles F. Simes and Mrs. Sam Woods of Clinton; and Mrs. Mary Hahn of Kansas City. Mr. Simes lived a full, a happy and a useful life. He worked very hard for many years at his business and his home, knowing well that the secret of happiness and success lies in earning those achievements. He was a genial and kindly man and a very interesting conversationalist. He was an intense patriot, and took an active civilian part in the two world wars, holding nothing back in his efforts to aid in the victory, while his loyal expressions stirred enthusiasm in others. His success in business gained for him a high position in the community and his advice was often sought by his fellow business men who respected his sound business judgment, his conservative opinions. His life was full and complete. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Funeral services for the late Benjamin Crawford Simes were held Tuesday afternoon at the Consalus and Peck Funeral Home. Graveside ceremonies and burial were in Englewood cemetery.

Clinton MO - Mrs. Chas. F. Simes died at her home on South 8th street, at 7 o'clock the morning of July 4th. She had been very ill for two weeks with a complication of diseases, which seriously affected her heart. She had been in failing health for nearly a year and with the grief, which had just recently came to her through the death of her sister, Mrs. John Datweiler, and other cares, perhaps hastened the end. Bertha Augusta Johnson was born at Newcastle, Ind., April 17, 1868, where she grew to womanhood and came to Henry county with her parents in 1886. Oct 15, 1889, she married Chas. F. Simes. Her husband survives her with their children, both of whom are grown. Raymond, who lives on Ohio street, and Miss Louise at home. She is also survived by her parents, A. N. Johnson and wife, two sisters - Mesdames C.N. Knoles and Owen Taylor and one brother, Charles Johnson. Clinton had been her home ever since her marriage. She was converted and united with the First M. E. church a number of years ago. She possessed a charm of manner and sweetness of disposition that made her loved by all her acquaintances. In fact she was a most lovable woman. This was part due to the part that she was so unselfish. Since the death of her sister she had tried to help make up to those nieces the loss of their dear mother and gave them wise council and guidance. Her father is nearly helpless, so she thoughtfully had her parents move next door to her, so she could help and care for them in many ways. Hers were busy hands and it seems that she was needed so, but the Father in Heaven knows the best way, so we dare not question. The funeral services were conducted at the home last Saturday morning and her body was laid in Englewood underneath a mound of flowers.

Clinton MO - Mrs. Ben Simes Sr. Dies After A Short Illness - Had Been A Resident of Clinton Many Years - Active in Club and Church Life and Wife of Prominent Clinton Merchant - One of God's angels stooped near the earth at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to close the eyelids and lift the soul of Mrs. Ben C. Simes, Sr., to the realms of Life's Tomorrow. Mrs. Simes, who had not been well since a year ago last fall when she had pneumonia, had been critically ill only since Saturday, a week past, suffering a heart attack shortly after her daughter, Mrs. Tom Wilson, and granddaughter, Miss Lilburne Wilson, who had been with her for a week's visit, had started for their home in Texas. Realizing Sunday that the end was near she had bade her family goodbye with the sweet courage and resignation that had stamped her life as beautiful. Conscious up until almost the last, she quietly slipped into oblivion. Jessie Brown was born August 18, 1867, on the farm of her parents, four miles east of Clinton, on what is known today as the England place. When a girl of fourteen she moved to Clinton with her parents, who made their home at 503 South Second Street on the site of the present Barnett home. Her father, then in the contracting business, built the old Baptist church, the McLane and McBeth homes and the old Dr. G. Y. Salmon house on North Main Street, the latter three the oldest brick residences of the community; also in Texas, he built the Grayson County courthouse, the Brinkley House at Sherman, Texas, and one of Ft Worth's oldest hotels. She attended the Clinton Schools and the Lamkin Academy, teaching school a year in West Plains Mo., after graduation. December 26, 1888, she became the bride of Ben C. Simes, established merchant of Clinton, and to their union four children were born, Ruth Zadelle (Mrs. W. Farmer) deceased; Mrs. Tom Wilson and Mrs. R. J. Littlefield of Dallas, Texas, and an only son, Ben, of Clinton, whose home and family across the street from his parents has been their happiness and comfort. From childhood Mrs. Simes was a member of the First M.E. Church, where she delighted to work, taking comfort and pride in her denomination and rearing her children in its beliefs. She was for years the teacher of a class of women organized by Mrs. E.P. Winters, former Clintonian, and took great pleasure in their organization as the attendance was usually about 30. The women were all devoted to her and made a memory chain for her of unique and antique buttons not long since. The chain at least two yards in length held great interest for her and she knew from whom every button had come. To them in her last conscious hours she sent a special farewell. Mrs. Simes was secretary of the Foreign Missionary Society and vice-president of the Home Missionary Society at the time of her death, entertaining the latter but a few weeks ago. Mrs. Simes was also active in the club life of the community, being an able member of the Clinton Shakespeare class for over 20 years and on the roster of the Tourist Club about 20. To them she gave faithful interest, and attendance, preparing her prigrams and lending a zest to the securing of excellent or unusual material that added greatly to the club life. In both she will be greatly missed. Her gentle spirit's absence create a void for her fellow workers. In her home life, however, she found expression for her greatest talents. A lady of sweet and refined instincts, she set the example for her children, trained her daughters in housewifely arts that has made them efficient homemakers and reared her only son with a practical hand that linked with his father's able tutelage, has made him one of Clinton's most efficient young business men. Between Mr. and Mrs. Simes existed the perfect sympathy and unity of feeling that begets happiness of the finest sort, making of the wife a real helpmeet and an inspiration to win life's best and fullest. To her children she was fully devoted, proud of their achievements and success, interested in all details of their lives. To her grandchildren she gave a love and concern that motivated their ambitions and growing talents. A needlewoman of art, she was always busy making lovely fancy work her last weeks of life. Mrs. Simes is survived by her splendid husband and the above mentioned children, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral services were Wednesday at the First M.E. Church, and the beloved body was laid to rest in Englewood Cemetery. Active pall bearers were her three grandsons, Messrs. W.C., Wallace and Ben Farmer, her nephew, Raymond Simes, and LeRoy Oskins, and Louis Freund.

He was born October 6, 1922, in Woodlawn, Illinois, the only son of William Simmons and Tella Watkins Simmons. His only sister, Olive Kathryn (Simmons) Wilson, preceded him in death by just one month and one day. Jay graduated from Southwest High School in St. Louis and entered college, prior to the United States entry into World War II, at the University of Missouri, where Jay met his wife Jean Sutherland, who was to be his love, pride and his partner and friend for over 60 years. After our country formally entered World War II, Jay enlisted in the United States Navy and eventually became both a Naval aviator and officer. Flying became an infectious passion of Jay's for many years. Following his honorable discharge from the United States Navy at the end of the war, Jay adopted Windsor, his wife's birthplace, as his own hometown, finishing his college education at Central Missouri State College (now University) in Warrensburg where he earned and received a Bachelor of Science degree in history and business. Jay and his wife, Jean, eventually had two sons and one daughter, Bill and Jim Simmons and Jane (Simmons) Jadlot. Then, each of Jay's children had four children, for a total of 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey, James, Jamie, Janann, Julie, John, Jodi, Jordan, Jayton, Jeani, Jenna and Jackie Jean. He served on the Whiteman AFB Community Council for a score of years. Jay, in later years, had an active interest in Windsor Communications. As Jay requested prior to his death, his earthly body was cremated in Mesa, Arizona. His ashes were interred at Laurel Oak Cemetery in Windsor Sunday, July 4, with a graveside service only.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Apr 2 2003 - Joan Helen Simmons was born August 31, 1948, at Ellett Hospital in Appleton City and she died at St. Mary's Hospital in Jefferson City on March 14, 2003. She was the youngest child of Alfred and Helen Jenkins Neuenschwander. Joan was a joy and surprise to her parents for when her twin brother John was born the doctor said something like, "There's a second baby." Alfred had to leave the hospital and buy fabric that he took to the ladies of the neighborhood so that they could quickly sew more diapers and gowns for in that time you had to furnish the diapers and clothes the baby would need while in the hospital. Joan led the typical life of a child growing up on the farm in the 1950s. She went to church and school and learned the skills that she would use for the rest of her life. Joan joined 4-H where she developed her love of sewing. She became very talented and her sewing became recognized by judges, clients and family as exceptional quality. She made bridal gowns, bridesmaids' gowns and mother of the bride dresses. Her talent made many weddings a thing of beauty, but her most loved project was the beautiful hand-beaded gown that she made for Annette and T.K.'s wedding. She spent almost 500 hours sewing thousands of beads and pearls on lace that was applied to the gown. She also shared her talent with the church when she made all of the choir robes and stoles when the new church was constructed. Joan served as a Girl Scout leader for several years. Teaching girls the skills needed to enjoy the out-of-doors - going on over nights - and trying not to be afraid herself when the coyotes were howling and yipping and there was nothing but a thin canvas wall between them and the great outdoors. After Joan married she and Ken always lived away from the community but she and Ken returned as often as they could. They always took a week of vacation for Octoberfest so that they could both help with making brats and Joan would bake several batches of Schnitz Brodt using her Grandma Nettie's recipes. She would also donate handiwork for the bazaar. On July 17, 1966, Joan married Kenneth Wayne Simmons at the Valley Center Church and to this union was born their daughter Annette Dawn and later a stillborn daughter, Rebecca Ann. Joan and Ken enjoyed working together whether it was at home - at the farm - or working on a special project like the remodeling of Annette and T.K.'s home. They just enjoyed being together. Both Joan and Ken enjoyed watching Annette as she grew up - going to her track meets - Girl Scout camping trips - fishing - but most of all seeing her become the talented, self-confident young woman she is today. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her infant daughter, Rebecca. She is survived by her beloved husband Ken; daughter Annette and son-in-law, T.K. Hayes, who she always referred to as her son. Joan leaves her mother-in-law, Beulah Simmons; sister-in-law Mary Boan and husband, Bill Boan, brothers-in-law Kelly and wife Brenda, Roy and wife Eva Lee and Mike and wife Norma, all of Clinton. She also leaves her older sister, Ruth Fulwider and husband Harry, Lowry City. Joan always slept with Ruth and it was Ruth who became her second mom - getting up in the night to take her downstairs to get a drink of water because Joan was sure there were monsters that would get her. Joan leaves her big brother, Art and wife Judy, Deepwater. She always loved coming down to the farm and helping Art with transplanting in the greenhouse and working in the garden. Most of all she enjoyed being down when the sweet corn was ready. She also leaves her sister, Pat Stewart of Lowry City. Joan and Pat enjoyed going to country music concerts, especially George Strait concerts. She and Pat enjoyed their trips to the State Fair and they made the best shopping team ever. And last but not least she leaves her twin brother, John and wife Peg, Longview, Washington. She and John shared a special bond only known by twins. They went from biting each other in the playpen to becoming the best of friends. She always said that John made her ask Daddy for the car when they wanted to go somewhere because John was chicken. She also left nieces and nephews, aunts, uncle, cousins and a host of friends. Joan was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend - but most of all she was a warrior. When she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer she never asked, "Why me?" She faced surgery and chemotherapy with strength and courage - when she cried it was because she would miss us and knew we would miss her - but she was not afraid. She knew from the lessons she was taught in this church - that she would see her loved ones again - both the ones who had preceded her and the ones that she left behind. The funeral was March 17, at Valley Center United Church of Christ. Burial was in Valley Center Cemetery, Deepwater.

d: Jul 16 1938, Rose Hill Twp, Johnson Co, MO
bur: Wall Cemetery, Rose Hill Twp, Johnson Co, MO

Another of the few remaining pioneer residents of Johnson County has passed away. Mrs. Salena Wall Simpson of Denton, Mo., died at the home of her son Will Simpson, on her farm four miles north of Blairstown at 12:30 a.m. July 16 1938, aged 89 years. Mrs. Simpson was the daughter of R. Z. R. and Mary Jane Wall, natives of North Carolina, who with a caravan of 700 relatives and friends crossed the mountains, and after three months of travel and hardships reached Missouri in the fall of 1839. In the spring of 1840, Dr. R. Z. R. Wall and his family located in southwestern Johnson County near Bear Creek. It was then called Madison Township. Dr. Wall, being a successful surgeon, soon acquired large holdings of land in more than one township. Salena Wall, the 5th of a family of 13 children, was born on the farm which lies south of the home where she died. There she spent her childhood days with her labor in the pioneer farm home made light by the many Negro slaves owned by her father. She was schooled in the strictest discipline. Devotions around the family alter were observed each night before the family retired. And Sunday was a day of worship, no noise, no seeking of worldly pleasures. In her, the Presbyterian cults were deeply implanted, hence, she grew up with a deep religious consciousness, and she never grew away from that training. When 18 years of age, she was united in marriage to Richard Simpson who preceded her in death July 19, 1895. Left with a family of 9 children, 8 of whom were at home, the youngest being not quite 3 years of age, and with strained financial circumstances a weaker person then she would have failed. But not Salena Simpson. With undaunted courage and supreme faith she labored and struggled, held her family together and endeavored to rear her children as Christian men and women, as worthy citizens of her country. Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church at Denton Sunday afternoon. Interment was in the Wall Cemetery under the direction of the O. L. Cook funeral home.

Clinton Missouri, June 21, 1902 - The community was greatly shocked May 29 by news of the sudden death of one of the oldest and most highly respected women, Mrs. Hester Aultz Sisson, widow of the late James Sisson and mother of well known citizens John, Benjamin and Lee Sisson. She was one of the few remaining early settlers in this county and characteristic of the old pioneers who braved the wilds in that day when it took courage, energy and true manhood and womanhood to win a good name and build up a happy home. She was born in West Virginia May 8, 1824, married at the age of 18 and moved to Johnson County, Mo., in 1854, where they lived for five years, moving to Henry in 1859. She joined the M.E. Church south when young, in her native state. Her comfort in her old age was the 91st Psalm and her favorite song was We'll Never Say Good-Bye in Heaven. She died suddenly while eating breakfast with her son, J. A. and daughter Mary. Three of her children died many years ago and their mother has gone to love and caress them as in days gone by. Eight still live to realize how dark the world becomes when mother's light no longer shines and her voice is stilled. Laid to rest by the side of her husband in Bear Creek cemetery.
