Englewood Cemetery UD-WE, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Samuel Vail's Funeral Held in Clinton Presbyterian Church - Clinton friends were shocked and grieved to learn that he had joined the heavenly hosts, at 1:50 p.m., Saturday, July 17th, 1926. He had been suffering from kidney and bladder trouble for several years, but did not become seriously ill until just a few days before his death. He and his wife had enjoyed a visit with their daughter, Mrs. Thomas, in Cedar county. He became ill after his return to Stotesbury. The illness soon became very acute and suffering intense. His physicians said an operation was the only chance, so he was hurried to Ft. Scott, Kans., where a minor operation was performed on Thursday, but son they saw that the end was coming. His son, Ernest, who was at his bedside, constantly, said he was able to talk only a little until Friday. Saturday, his spirit slipped away from the body, so pain racked, into eternity. He was born in Ohio, June 15, 1846, but moved to Iowa, when a small boy, where he lived until 1867, when he came to Clinton. Here he was married to Miss Susan Bodkin, Dec. 27, 1873. Four children were given to this marriage, all now in homes of their own. They have made the highest type of citizens, which reflects on the wholesomeness and beauty of the parental home. They are: Ernest Vail, Stotesbury, Mo.; Mrs. C. J. Thomas, Walker, Mo.; S. E. Vail, Blytheville, Ark.; Arthur Vail, Tulsa, Okla. In 1869, Mr. Vail started a brick manufacture, this he continued for 40 years, nearly all of Clinton's buildings being made of this famous durable Vail brick, which includes the old Baird College, Y.M.C.A., Holy Rosary Academy, the Eye office, and many other business houses. While he made brick, he built character as well. In 1871, he gave his heart to Christ and united with the Fields Creek C. P. church, near where he was living. After they moved to Clinton they united with the c. P. church in Clinton, then after the two churches united with the First Presbyterian church of Clinton. When they moved to Stotesbury, as there was no Presbyterian church, they united with the Methodist church, where he faithfully served his Lord and Master. His beloved companion will miss him, she most of all, for they have enjoyed real companionship for 52 1/2 years. Only a short while it seems it was our privilege to write of their golden Wedding Anniversary celebration, when all were present, without a break in the family circle. His body was brought to Clinton Monday morning, and taken to the Presbyterian church, where the funeral services were conducted. Interment in Englewood.

They located at Wooster, Ohio, and she lived there until after her marriage and later moved to North Missouri and came to Clinton in the fall of 1865 and bought an extensive tract of land just west of town. It was afterward known as the Old Cruce farm and is now divided into a number of fine farms, her nephew Samuel Rice, residing on one. Mrs. Vail's maiden name was Yager. She had no children but raised as her own William Vail of Kansas City and Samuel Vail of this city. Mrs. Frank Milton of Wichita, Kansas is a niece and an only surviving brother Henry Yager lives at Riceville, Iowa. VAIL, Susanna BOTKIN
b: Jun 12 1853, near St. Mary's, OH
d: Oct 18 1937, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Englewood Cemetery UD-WE, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Mrs. Samuel Vail Died - The soul of Mrs. Samuel Vail, widow of the owner of one of Clinton's first industries, took off on its final flight to regions of splendor on high where dwell the faithful in the Master's kingdom, at about 11:00 a.m. October 18, 1937, at the home of her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Vail, near Teays Chapel in the south part of Henry County. She suffered a stroke about seven weeks ago which affected her throat, making speech impossible and taking nourishment difficult. She retained a clarity of mind until a few minutes before the end, understanding all that was said to her, and making her loved ones understand some of her desires, the first of which was the presence of her daughter, Mrs. C. J. Thomas, of near Dederick, Mo., who came that evening, also a son, Arthur, of Amarillo, Texas, who was with his mother about five weeks. Her other son, Edgar, of Blytheville, Ark., came about a month ago and remained at his mother's bedside for some time. Everything was done that could be done but the spirit, which had for 84 years, been alert for opportunities to rise to heights of Christian service, sought freedom, and burst from earthly bonds, gladly winging its way upward to meet its beloved mate, gone on before, and other loved ones. Susie Botkin was born June 12, 1853, near St. Mary's, Ohio, and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Botkin, came to Missouri when a girl of 16, two years later moving to west of Clinton on what is known as the Walkley place. Here she met a neighbor lad Samuel Vail, who lived on what is now the Rice brothers' farm, and December 24, 1873, pledged her troth to him, who was then operating a brick yard across from the Cornick Greenhouse, assisted by Pete Freund. Their married life began on what is the Will Dehn farm, on highway 18, just west of Clinton, where their daughter and son, Ernest, were born. Later they moved to a home opposite the Cornick greenhouse on Hudson street, which was the birthplace of their other two sons. They returned to the farm for several years, twice moving to the home on Hudson street, also living at the corner of Third and College, just west of the Booth hatchery, where Mr. Vail built the two-story brick house in 1890. In 1905 he erected the attractive brick house on their farm, adjacent to Mr. Vail's brickyard which he operated for about 35 years and where handmade brick were made that was used in the construction of Baird college, the Holy Rosary Academy, several of the churches and the greater share of the business houses about the square. The superior quality of the Vail brick is evident by the many years it had stood. Mr. Vail not only made bricks but he and his wife built for eternity in the community by putting the Christ into their lives. Mrs. Vail was a true helpmate to her husband, possessing an inherent gentleness which left its influence for good upon all who knew her and became the vital point about which was woven their home life. Their house was the center of the social activities of the Presbyterian young people as well as others who lived and sought clean fun. Here, too, this gracious gentlewoman welcomed those who suffered rebuffs from the world and who never departed from her presence until healed by Mrs. Vail's soothing touch and lesson on Christian forbearance for she was so attuned to the spiritual needs that she saw past the outer, physical appearance into the innermost needs of the heart, and with a kindliness, which was her royal heritage from the true King, she supplied those needs. She had a bright outlook on life; she knew and loved people and during the short time she had lived in the Teays Chapel community, she had become a part of its activities, saving as always, her church and God first place. She was converted and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Clinton after her marriage, and after the two church divisions united, joined the Presbyterian. After she and her husband moved to Vernon County, she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church, south, of which she remained a member until death. Mrs. Vail had a strong character and keen mentality; giving essential things of life first place and not overshadowing them with unessentials. Upon such is founded the great American nation. Her interest in life never flagged; she saw and seized every opportunity for service, ever keeping her finger on the pulse of life, drawing within the circle of her great understanding heart, all, and ministering to them with a master human touch. Hers was an exemplary life of the beauty, joy and satisfaction of keeping one's body a fit temple for the soul. She was an aristocrat, always daintily groomed, and possessed a sweet simplicity of manner. She was familiar with every homemaking art, both in the appearance of her home and the spirit of her hospitality. She realized that her life was drawing to a close, and at a recent visit with her daughter, talked of the final arrangements after she had gone to join her beloved husband who died in 1926, and the old friends. She is survived by her four children named above, also a brother, Jack Botkin and sister, Mrs. May Smith, both at St. Mary's Ohio, and another sister, Mrs. W. D. Leitz, Newark, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Teays Chapel. Her body was brought to Clinton and burial was in Englewood beside her husband.

Mrs. Frank Vansant entered eternity at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 1935, at her home northeast of Montrose, near the Bear Creek church. Heart trouble, which had made her frail for some time, caused her death, when she contracted pneumonia. Susan V. Miller, daughter of James M. and Artemesa Miller, was born June 20, 1860, south of Clinton. Susan V. Miller's ancestry is traced back through a line of distinguished pioneer families. Her grandfather migrated from Scotland and settled in South Carolina. He later moved to Kentucky where her father was born. Her father moved from Kentucky to Illinois and later to Missouri. February 24, 1885, she was married to George Franklin Vansant at Montrose. They lived on a farm on Grand River one year after their marriage, then returned to Montrose and moved to their present home the following spring, where they have since lived continuously for 49 years. Had she lived until February 24th they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Here they maintained a home founded upon honesty and frugality and tempered by a love which has made possible a happy family life. Seven children - three boys and four girls came to bless this home. Six survive: Mrs. Alden Zehnder of Delmar; Edward Allen and James Corbett of the home; Mrs. Deck Miller of Paola, Kans.; Mrs. Clarence Cornell of Montrose; and Bernice Cosette, also of the home. All the children were present with their mother in her last illness. Roscoe Bruce preceded her in death in early childhood. Mrs. Vansant was seventh in a family of ten children - four girls and six boys. Two brothers only remain to mourn her passing; John S. Miller of Carlsbad, Calif., and Dr. James M. Miller of Montrose, who attended her in her last illness. Her eldest brother, Bruce, made his home with her the last eight years of his life. Besides her husband and six children, she leaves six granddaughters, one grandson, one great-granddaughter and a great host of more distant relatives. The grandson, James Edward Miller, was taken into the home at the age of 22 months and reared until he entered high school. She loved him as one of her own children and one of her last joys was seeing him Christmas week. Mrs. Vansant's long life was devoted to one of the highest of vocations - that of building and maintaining a worthy home. She was always found in her place and her life was marked by loving and faithful service to her family and friends. Her desire was to share what she had with others, especially the hospitality of her home. Even through her last illness she was solicitous for the welfare of those around her - deploring to cause them trouble. She never forgot to say "thank you" for any service rendered her. Her keen intellect functioned up till the moment of her death. She loved to quote many poems and beautiful passages of literature. She joined the M. E. church, South, at the age of 18 and continued her membership throughout life. She knew that her life's work was over and waited for the Master's call unafraid. Her life was a beautiful example of a willingness and determination to adapt herself to whatever situation life might present. Loving care of family and friends comforted but could not keep her. She may not come bake to them but they can go to her. Funeral services were conducted January 5, at Bear Creek Chapel. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Earl Warner and Dugan Dale from Edwardsville, Kans.; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Frank, Bison, Mont.; Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Koelsch, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Overbeck, Mrs. Lille Miller, Mrs. Lillie Heldecker, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Miller and Jim Ed, Paola, Kans.

bur:
Englewood Cemetery UD-WE, Clinton, Clinton Twp, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO - Entered into rest eternal about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, May 31st, the spirit of Mrs. Mariah Jane VanWinkle left the earthly body to dwell in the Eternal Home. She had been in declining health the past year and a few months ago became ill of stomach trouble. She had gotten better of that ailment, however, but recently she had neuralgia in the arms, shoulder and side, which went to her heart and she only lived a few minutes. It was a shock to the entire neighborhood, for she had never been unable to get about the house and had seemed better that day. Deceased was 76 years old the 6th of March. She was born in Illinois and was the daughter of James R. and Mary E. Biggs, deceased, who were among the highly esteemed citizens of Clinton for many years. Her mother preceded her in death only a few years ago, just lacking about a month of being 89 years old. On July 3, 1865, she was united in marriage with Moses VanWinkle, at Carthage, Illinois, who died about 43 years ago. She is survived by seven children: Mrs. Mary Easterbrook, San Francisco, Cal.; J. E. VanWinkle and J. F. VanWinkle, of Clinton; W. T. VanWinkle, Coffeyville, Kas.; Mrs. Mishie Fowler, Pittsburg, Kas.; Sam VanWinkle, Golden, Colo., and Mrs. Maude Crawford, Stuttgart, Ark. She also leaves a large number of grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One grandchild, Mrs. frank Banning, of Kansas City, she raised from a small child. Three brothers and one sister survive - Alex Biggs and Mrs. Mary I. Smith, of California; Elmer Biggs, Clinton, and Alfred Biggs, Nevada. Deceased had resided on West Clinton street about 35 years. Previous to moving to Clinton she lived east of town. All who knew her loved her, for she was one of the noblest and sweetest of characters. Her life was one of loving ministry for those about her, always willing to give any service possible to help those in sickness or need. She was a member of the Methodist church. Nothing can prove her trust in God better than her own words when talking to a neighbor a year or so ago. She was telling of her hardships years ago, as she was left a widow at the age of 33 with her little children to raise. sometimes it was necessary for her to leave part of the children at the house while she would go to the fields or timber with the others. When asked if she was not afraid to leave them, she said: "No, I always left them in the care of the Lord," and in speaking of how good her neighbors were to help her, she said: "If we live right we will be taken care of." Her son, J. E. VanWinkle, and wife had resided with her for about two years, and she could not have had more tender and loving care than they gave her. Every wish was granted. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday, at the home, after which the remains were interred in Englewood.
