Her alluvial valleys and arable hillsides were covered with giant forests of oak, beech and chestnut trees, which must be removed by the woodsman's ax 'ere the vast area of wild wilderness was transformed into the beautiful agricultural garden. Amid these busy times and stern surroundings, Uncle Absalom was born and grew to manhood and it was during this early period of his life that the traits of honest, industry and self-reliance which characterized his whole life were formed. His father, John Vickers, came to Kentucky about the time it was admitted into the Union as a state and took an active interest in the formation of those statues of which every old Kentuckian feels proud. He served as a member of the Kentucky legislature between 1830 and 1840, when he retired from public life and resumed farming, which he followed until his death, about 1870, when he was nearly 86. In 1837, Absalom Vickers was married to Elizabeth Welch, with whom he lived about 62 years, only abandoning their native state in 1850 with the great tide of emigration which began to drift to the prairie region north and west of the Ohio, settling in Hancock county, Illinois. He left there in 1854 and settled in Bethlehem, then Grand River, township in the autumn, on what was known as the Barnes land. The greater part of this county was then government land, subject to settlement and entry under certain general laws. He took advantage of the conditions and entered a large body of land lying adjacent to the land he had acquired by purchase. And here began to erect a permanent home. In 1856, with few others, he conceived the idea of erecting a permanent house of worship, the outgrowth of which was old Bethlehem Baptist Church. This was the first church building built in the territory now embraced within Bethlehem, Clinton and Osage townships and, if we are correct, the third one in Henry County. He was one of the prime movers in the Tebo Association and the last surviving member of those who helped organize it. He lived to see a modern church structure erected upon the old site of the church of '56. He was one of those men who believed that religious persons should take an active part in public affairs, was broadminded and liberal on matters of a public nature. Not having the advantages of a liberal education, he felt the need for better facilities and it may be said to his credit that for many years his home district maintained the best country school in the best country schoolhouse in the county. At the time of his death, he had five living children - four daughters and one son. Two of the former, Mrs. Dr. Jennings and Mrs. J. L. Wood, are living in Clinton, one in Kansas, one in DeSoto this state, and John W., who resides in Kansas City. It was his self-appointed work to see that the old church at Bethlehem was swept and dusted, fires built, the church comfortable for any meeting and many times, he left the plow in the field and mounted his horse to carry the news of a funeral to some friend or see that the grave was dug, even for strangers he had never seen. He was not much of a person to be away from home. He visited in Kansas City in the spring of '87 and spent two days there again in June of '98 and, while there, remarked that he hadn't missed plowing and planting a crop each spring for seventy-five years, tho his crop that year was only a small one. During the year of 1880, the old church which had been built about '57 was sold to Mr. Vickers and a new one built and Jan. 1, 1881, Mr. Vickers started the first song, the Rev. William Weir offered the first prayer and B. F. Lawler preached the first sermon in the new church. About three years before he died, he moved to Clinton to be near his children and was unable to farm. Bethlehem churchyard and the burying ground is part of his farm, being set aside and deeded by him to trustees, and it was a labor of love to him to see that it was kept in as good order as his strength and time would permit.

Clinton MO, Nov 12 1887 - About four weeks ago, Edward Violette was here on a visit to his son, Thomas and when he returned home was feeling better than for months; but in a few days after his arrival he sent for the Methodist minister and together they talked of the future, Mr. Violette at that time not being a member of any church, though he said, "I have been a Christian but a few days and have made my peace with my maker and am ready to go." And on Nov. 4, 1887, his labors ceased and the portals of heaven opened to receive him. Before his death, he called to his wife to bring out some relics he had not revealed the history thereof, which had been handed down for generations, consisting of covers and spoons. Altho the quilts are over 150 years old, they are in good state of preservation and will outwear those made at the present day. The spoons are about 200 years old. The relics were divided between Thomas Violette of this city and a brother at Versailles and are highly prized. He was born May 1, 1800 at Harper's Ferry, Va. and at an early age moved to Logan county, Ky. In 1844, he came to this state and settled in Johnson county where he has since resided. Leaves a wife, aged 72, and 7 children. Burial in the Blackwater graveyard, 13 miles north of Holden, Sunday afternoon.

He was stricken with a heart attack, while before one of his classes at the University, and death follow soon thereafter, closing a life that was replete with scholarly attainment and service in the educational fields of his country. Eugene Morrow Violette was born in Johnson County, Missouri, 1874, the son of the late Tom Violette, who was a shoe merchant in Clinton many years. When he was about six years of age he moved with his family to Pleasant Hill, MO. and then to Kentucky where they resided until they returned to Missouri, locating in Clinton about 1879. Eugene attended the public schools in Clinton from which he was graduated and then became a student at the old Lampkin Academy, where the Phi Lamba Epsilom was conceived by Uel and Charlie Lampkin, the late F. B. Owen of Oklahoma City, R. L. Covington and Mr. Violette. He continued his studies at the State Teachers College at Kirksville; Central College, Fayette; Chicago University and then Harvard University. Choosing the teaching field he became pre eminent in his field of work. At the time of his death he was at work on a new History Of Missouri. He was married to Miss Hallie Hall of Trenton, Missouri, who preceded him in death in 1935. He will laid by her side in Maple Grove Cemetery at Trenton, Friday afternoon. His second wife died about two years ago. He is survived by a son, Homer Violette, Bowie, Md., and daughter, Mrs. Charles Campbell, New Orleans; eight and Mrs. Jeanne Violette, Clinton, MO. - From the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College Records, Kirksville, Missouri, (Truman State University) The Eugene Morrow Violette Collection (1875-1940) Eugene Morrow Violette, the eldest son of Thomas Henry & Julia (Horn) Violette, was born September 4, 1875 on his Grandfather Violette's farm near Pittsfield, MO. He died March 26, 1940, at his home in Baton Rouge, LA. Eugene grew up in Clinton, MO, where he worked in his father's shoe store while attending Clinton High School and Clinton Academy. In 1892, while a student at the Academy, he joined a group of friends "the gang" in his diaries) to become one of the six founding members of Phi Lambda Epsilon fraternity. In 1895, he entered Central College (now Central Methodist University), Fayette, MO, and earned a BA which was awarded in 1898. He then moved on to the University of Chicago for an MA in History the following year. After teaching several years, he twice took sabbaticals to work on his PHD at Harvard; he completed the course work but was unable to finish the degree program. Violette began his long teaching career as an Assistant in History during his senior year at Central. Upon completion of his Master's, he was appointed Acting Associate Professor of History at the University of Missouri for one year, then accepted a permanent position as Professor of European History and Head of the Department of History and Government at the First District Normal School (now Truman State University) in Kirksville. Except for a year's leave to teach at Washington University, St. Louis, 1920-21, he remained in Kirksville from 1900 until 1923 when he went to Louisiana State University as Associate Professor of History. He was Professor of English History there at the time of his death in 1940. Although Violette's professed areas of interest and training were British and medieval European history, he became one of Missouri's premiere state historians. His extensive works on Missouri history include A History of Missouri (1918), the standard public school textbook for many years. While in Kirksville, he created the Normal School archives and began collecting artifacts for what would eventually become the campus historical museum (later named the EM Violette Museum in his honor). Off campus, he initiated the drive for an Adair County Historical Society, was a founding Trustee of the State Historical Society of Missouri, served on the Mississippi Valley Historical Association's editorial board, was on the Missouri Centennial Commission, and was a very active member of the American Historical Association, the Missouri Teachers Association and numerous other professional organizations. In 1902, Eugene married Miss Hallie Hall (1870-1935), the daughter of George and Rachel Abbott (Smith) Hall of Trenton, MO, and an English instructor at the Normal School. The couple had two children, Homer Newton (1903-1982), and Rachel Eugenia (1905-1992). His second wife was longtime family friend and Kirksville school teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth "Bessie" (Smith) Starr (1886-1938). She died during their honeymoon voyage to Europe, only two months after their Christmas 1937 wedding. When Eugene Violette died in March 1940, his children donated his personal library and papers to the two schools where he had spent the major portion of his career, Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (the old Normal School) and Louisiana State University. The LSU library was to select the documents and books related to Louisiana that they wanted for their collection and the rest, including personal diaries and scrapbooks, were to come to Pickler Memorial Library at Northeast Missouri College, Kirksville MO.
