Clinton Eye, Clinton MO - John Peter, oldest son of Mr. And Mrs. W. H. Wankum, was the first Bear Creek boy to make the supreme sacrifice for his country in this emergency when, only 15 days after he returned to army service following his 14-day induction furlough, he passed away at Ft. Sill, OK., according to word received by hiss parents Saturday forenoon. John Peter Wankum was born August 23, 1902, at St. Thomas, Cole County, Missouri, and died September 4, aged 40 years, 11 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his parents and eight brothers and sisters: Sister Hubertina of Papillion, Nebr., Sister Wilfreda of Denver, Colo; Ida (Mrs. Fred Distler) of Jefferson City, MO; Urban and Paul of Marcus, Iowa; Ann (Mrs. Ben Wiesmann) of Kansas City, Ks; Pfc Joseph of Ft. Rosecrans, San Diego, Calif; and Caroline (Mrs. Jimmie Johnson) of Kansas City, Kansas. A year old brother and three-month-old sister preceded him to the better world. John answered his country's call gladly and went to its service with a smile and words of hope. Not one of his fold or friends heard him utter a word of complaint because of having to give up a good job to fight for freedom and he was ready to go and to do whatever was needed. His death places an even greater responsibility upon those who are likewise called; to live as he would have lived and to die even as he, in the fulfillment of their duty. The body was accompanied to the home by Sergeant Alexander and arrived Monday night. Funeral and burial were Wednesday morning when requiem high mass was held at Immaculate Conception Church at Montrose. The arrival of Pfc. Joseph Wankum Tuesday evening from his post at San Diego completed the gathering, at the home, of all John's brothers and sisters for the funeral. Burial was at the Catholic cemetery.

WARD, Melvina Fern HARNESS
b: Aug 8 1899, Missouri
d: Aug 18 1921, SW of LaDue, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Bear Creek Cemetery, Bear Creek Twp, Henry Co, MO
Fern Harness Ward died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harness, southwest of LaDue, at 8 a.m. August 18th. About a year and a half ago when she was living in Oklahoma, she wrote to her folks that she was ill and gradually growing weaker. Her parents and sister went and after an examination the doctors told them it was tuberculosis and she had probably had it for a number of years. They took her at once to Phoenix, Ariz., and Pasadena, Calif., but climate, physicians or nursing could not cure and her desire was to be brought home. This was done and she was brought to the beautiful old brick homestead on the hill that had been in the family for several generations. It seemed appropriate that her going should be in the morning, for she was just in the morning of her life. She called her mother and asked to be lifted up. Her mother started to lift her head to put a pillow beneath and Fern's spirit went to Heaven. She was but 22 years and 10 days old. A life but very short, but in it crowded experiences that seldom come to one so young. When but a tiny girl, she showed great musical talent and also for drawing and painting. Her parents desiring to give their little daughters the best life had to offer started them to Cottey College at Nevada, when she was just about 8. At 9 she was converted and gave her heart and life to her Master. As the years went on she led in scholarship and became a violinist of unusual skill. Her fingers talented, too, with the brush, produced many pictures for her loved ones to treasure. For six months she had known she was not going to get well, but never had complained, just been so ready and willing for the time to come, as she often stated, ti was no use to worry over her going away as she knew in Whom she had believed and it was but a more beautiful city that was awaiting her. She chose the scripture lesson, the songs and the subject for Rev. Patison to speak on at her funeral. She had known him when he was pastor at the Montrose Methodist church. She chose her cousins for pall bearers but part of them were unable to be present. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Harness near LaDue and one sister, Miss Faye of Kansas City. The funeral services were held in the Bear Creek church Saturday afternoon. Burial in the cemetery nearby.

Clinton MO - Ross Ward, 36-year-old operator of a barber shop on South Main Street in the Poague Building, Clinton, was found dead in the rear seat of his 1933 Chevrolet sedan about three miles southeast of Clinton near the Fred Kayser farm about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday by Jack Craig and Albert Weess, Clinton WPA workmen, who were picking up road markers on WPA constructed roads. Ward had told relatives he was going quail hunting Wednesday. He was slumped on his right side in the rear seat, the 12-gauge Parker double barrel shotgun at his feet, and with his left shoe off, apparently having used this foot to pull the trigger. The charge entered his chest near the heart. After discovering the body, Craig and Weess immediately came to Clinton to notify Sheriff J. D. Teays, who notified Prosecuting Attorney Mark Wilson and Coroner Dr. W. T. Jennings, and who with his deputy, R. M. Eberting, accompanied them to the scene, where they found the car parked on the right side of the road headed west. The keys were intact and a few cigarettes were lying in a package on top of the front seat and a paper sack beside them, giving evidence a half-dozen shells had been purchased. Deputy Sheriff Eberting returned to Clinton and with Constable Robert s. Allen, summoned a jury composed of O. K. Clay, foreman, E. A. Vansant, J. L. Miller, Fred Ward, Bruce Rucker and Bob Eberting. An inquest was conducted at the scene after an investigation in which Craig, Weess, Sheriff Teays, Constable Allen, Henry Dickman and Frank Wagner were called. Craig and Weess stated the time they found the body at 2:45, leaving immediately to notify the sheriff. They saw no one about when they made the discovery. Dickman stated he saw the empty car parked there about 9:00 a.m. Wednesday as he went to Clinton in his pickup truck. Returning about 11:30 Wednesday morning he saw the car still there, but noticed a man coming from the Fred Kayser timber toward the car. He said he didn't pay particular attention as there were many hunters frequently in that vicinity, but believed the man was Ward. Dickman said he again went by the car at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday but didn't notice whether anyone was in the car. Wagner, who works for Dickman, stated he went by the car in a wagon about 9:00 a.m. and saw a man lying in the back seat, but supposed he was just sleeping. Sheriff Teays told of being notified by Craig and Weess and going immediately to the scene. Sheriff Teays testified he had investigated a report over a year ago, that Ward was about to commit suicide, but succeeded in discouraging the attempt. After the testimony of the witnesses, the jury announced a verdict of "Death by a self-inflicted wound." The body was brought to the Wilkinson funeral Home in their ambulance about 5:00 p.m. Ross is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ward, one mile northwest of Clinton on Highway 35 who survive with his wife, the former Fannie Allen, and two daughters, Shirley Glee, six years old, and Gloria Jean, 11, of the home at 207 North Carter Street; two sisters, Mesdames Sam Nuss and Grover Harrison, both of near Clinton. Unknown Newspaper article - Brothers Killed in Collision - Wreck Occured West of Windsor Tuesday Night on Crest of Hill - Two Windsor youths, brothers, were instantly killed in a car collision about 11:15 o'clock Tuesday night and the driver of the other car involved was injured, when their cars collided head-on about 100 yards west of the Windsor city limits on Highway 52, on the crest of a hill. Windsor is 25 miles southwest of Sedalia. Dead are Harold Glen Warren, 18, driver of a 1933 Chevrolet coach and his brother, Harley Roy Warren, 22, who was riding in the front seat with his brother. Injured was Jennings H. Palmer, 28, Leeton driver of the other car, a 1940 Lincoln Zephyr sedan. The Warren brothers are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Warren, who reside in Pettis county, four miles east of Windsor, on Highway 52. According to information received here, the Warren brothers had attended a social at the Baptist church in Windsor, and had taken Miss Doris Jean Lockard to her home, two miles west of Windsor on Highway 2. Both brothers suffered fractured skulls. Palmer was badly bruised and suffered lacerations. He was taken to a hospital at Clinton, where his condition was reported as serious, but it is believed, not critical. Sheriff R. M. Eberting and State Trooper J. A. Rick, of the highway patrol, made an investigation. Dr. R. S. Hollingsworth, coroner, was called and viewed the bodies, after which he called an inquest. It was held Wednesday afternoon the jury returning a verdict the two came to their deaths immediately due to a collision of automobiles. Clinton Missouri, Apr 11 1896 - George H. Warth, venerable and esteemed citizen, was born in Jackson, Ohio, October 12, 1806 and died April 7, 1896, at the home of a daughter Mrs. Dr. Kincannon in Walker, Missouri. He was married September 7, 1830 to Miss Mary English. They located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, engaging for years in the salt industry, then in 1856, he removed with his family to Henry County, spending a few months at Brownington, then known as White's Ferry. Mr. Warth finally located in Clinton in the hotel business, at the old Davis or St. Stephen Hotel for several years. He then spent a few years in Illinois, returning to Clinton to engage in civil engineering, a profession in which he was skilled and most devoted. He made the preliminary survey of the MK&T, then the Tebo and Neosho, from Sedalia to Fort Scott and the road was finally built on the line he had marked out. And to show the strong mental grasp he had on a subject, it will be remembered that a short time ago, a branch road from Eldorado Springs to Rich Hill, via Schell City, on a certain survey was being agitated. A few weeks before his death, when the matter was casually mentioned in his presence, he stated it couldn't be done - that he had gone over the line some years ago and found it wholly impractical. And the matter has since been abandoned. He is of a family of remarkable longevity. His oldest sister was the 1st white child born in Ohio - in Fort Marietta. Mrs. Hannah English of Jacksonville, Illinois, now in her 93 year. Mrs. Rebecca Michael of Calhoun is 84; Mrs. Julia Watson about 75 and lives in St. Paul, Minnesota; Judge John A. Warth of Charleston, West Virginia, an eminent jurist, is now 70 and all enjoy good health. September 7, 1880, Mr. Warth and his beloved wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. On March 5, 1891, the "mother in Israel" died at the age of 82. Uncle George then made his home with his son George F., visiting others of his children. Last fall he went to Walker and shortly after was stricken with paralysis. He was buried in Englewood.

Clinton Eye, Clinton, MO 1931 - Ed R. Waugh passed away at one a.m. Tuesday in the Wesley Hospital, in Kansas City, following an operation for what was thought to have been a stomach ulcer, but when he was operated on, they found it to be a cancer in a very advanced state, and his relatives were told that he would soon pass into eternity. When he was told about his serious condition, he had but one request, and that was to go home to die, but his condition was never so that they could move him. Mr. Waugh had suffered with a stomach trouble for many years, and since March the pain had been intense. When he became much worse, July 7, it was decided that an operation might help, and his brother-in-law, Dr. L. L. Smith, of Urich took him to the hospital, where he underwent the operation July 14. Ed Waugh was born February 16, 1868, at the home of his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Waugh, who came to Henry county, April 1866, and settled 1 3/4 miles west of Norris. The Waughs were of English lineage, the great grandfather (actually it was a gr gr gr grandfather) coming from Northern England. Ed's first wife was Miss Mamie Witt. Five children were given to this union, a daughter dying in infancy. The surviving children from this marriage were Harold, Orrick, Mo., Royston, Archie and Neal Waugh of near Norris. There are eight grandchildren from the first marriage. His first wife died April 15, 1899, and he was united in marriage July 28, 1901 to Miss Pinkie Martin. Six children were given to this union. One son, Boyd died two years ago. The others are Milo, who lives at Lamar, Frank, Charles, Walter Martin Waugh and Eddie Elizabeth, all at home. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. L. L. Smith, Urich, and Mrs. Jim Adair, Chilhowee, three brothers, Dick Waugh, Clarksville, Ia; Will Waugh, Pampa, Texas and J. H. Waugh near Norris. The deceased united with the Norris Methodist Church when he was a young man, and had served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was a liberal contributor, both of time and money, to this church, never sparing himself. He had strong convictions, and was frank to state them on all occasions. Mr. Waugh was held in high regard by his neighbors, which is always an index of true worth. He was just and ever ready to defend anybody or anything he thought was right, disagreeing often with his best friends, but everybody knew where Ed Waugh stood, and there was never a shadow of a doubt of his "being on the fence". His word was as good as his bond. His neighbors knew that Ed was the man to go to for help. He was hospitable, and enjoyed company in his home. He enjoyed conversation and was bright in repartee. A shrewd businessman, but one who never took advantage of anyone. He was a prosperous farmer, and no matter what the price of farm products were, he knew the way to make money, and at the time of his death owned a 490 acre farm, one of the best in the county. He will be missed much in his community, as he was public spirited and ready to do his share. A few months ago, when a new road was suggested to cross his farm, he not only donated a right-of-way, but said he and his boys would keep the road in good shape. He was fond of music, and the better things of life. He not only supported his church, but also his school, being one of the substantial patrons of the Norris consolidated district, and ever ready to help toward its progress. The Clinton Eye was always cheered by his visits, and we enjoyed the discussion of any issue that he might bring up. In fact, we know that one of our friends has passed into his reward. We do not feel that he is dead, as he had a spirit that shall live on and as we sit at the desk writing this we can see the keen flash of his bright black eyes, and the interest he had in life and folks. He loved his home and provided the best for his family. All were regular in church attendance, as he believed in "seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things will be added unto you." His children having had the rare privilege of being under his guidance to learn of the best things that life has to offer. He thoroughly understood his farm, and the raising of livestock, sharing his knowledge and the advantages of thorough study with neighbor and friend. He was a prominent Republican and counted it a high privilege to vote and have a part in the government of the land. Rev. Hargis, pastor of the Methodist church at Windsor, preached the funeral at the Norris church. The burial was beneath a wealth of flowers in the Carpenter cemetery.

It was with deep regret that his many friends heard of the death of Howard Waugh which occurred at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1948. He had undergone two major operations, one at the General Hospital in Clinton, and the second in Kansas City. He had been home only a few days after his first operation when he again became ill and was taken to St. Joseph Hospital. Howard Harrison Waugh, son of the late James H. and Gertrude Haines Waugh, was born February 27, 1889, and died June 19 of this year. He was born and reared near Norris, Mo., and had resided all his life in the same community, with the exception of a few years in Johnson County. At an early age he united in marriage to Gertrude Albin who died Oct. 14, 1935. To this union three children were born; Sylvia (Mrs. Ray Wehmeyer), Blairstown, Gloria Jean (Mrs. Robert Norcross), Clinton, and Raymond Lee, of the home, all of whom survive. On Oct. 8, 1939 he was married to Mrs. Mabel Park Butcher who survives. Howard was a substantial farmer and stockman, public spirited, always ready and willing to help in the betterment of his community, being a member of the school and township boards and a trustee of the Carpenter Cemetery. He will be sadly missed but his earthly labors were finished and the Heavenly Father has called him Home, leaving an influence for good that will extend through the years. The family has the sympathy of all in this time of deepest sorrow, but theirs is a rich heritage, the memory and blessing of a life well spent in service for the Master and his fellowman. Funeral services were conducted at the Norris Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon, June 22. Interment was in the Carpenter Cemetery.

Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Sep 25 2002 - James B. Waugh was born August 28, 1933, in Springfield, son of Frank M. and Jessie M. Edmondson Waugh. He died on September 14, 2002. He had a humble upbringing and made his home at Norris on the Waugh farmstead. His father, Frank, instilled in his boys, Jim and Pete, the value of hard work, the love of family and the love of God. Jim worked hard on the farm and loved it. It was a hard life coming from the Depression. Money wasn't earned on the yield of the farm, but survival. There were no extras, but they were full from the earth's bounty and with the love of their parents and the love of their Lord. After returning from the United States Army in 1955, he found he could do better by going to Kansas City, Kansas, to work, but his heart was always at the farm and vowed someday he would come back to live on it. In 1956, he met the love of his life, Patty Russ. He was working in Kansas City at the time and met her while visiting his parents, as he did every weekend. They were married the next year at the Norris Methodist Church by his friend and pastor, Rev. Bob Windsor. They made their home in Kansas City, Kansas, and raised their family there while Jim worked in the water department of the Board of Public Utilities. His sons, Frank Boyd, Charles David and James Dwight, were born within three years. Jim loved kids and he truly loved his boys as he tried through work, going to church and visiting his parents, to teach his boys the values that he learned from his parents. They were members of the Stephens United Methodist Church where Jim and Pat served as sponsors for the Youth Fellowship. Jim served young people in many ways, as a coach for 3 and 2 baseball, Webelos Cub Scout leader, camping chairman and Scout Master of Troop 5, a troop that had a history of producing many Eagle Scouts. He not only supported his sons in cross-country, swimming and track, he also supported the other boys on those teams and encouraged them to do their best. He loved those boys too and was there for them, also. He also served the kids in the church youth group. Besides wanting kids to be their best, he also wanted to show them the importance of God in their lives and how they could give their best to Him. God truly used Jim Waugh in making a better world for future generations by reaching to kids everywhere he went. It was by the power of the Holy Spirit that he was able to show the love of Jesus to all children, so they could experience God's unconditional love. This was Jim's way in serving the Lord. It was giving of himself. He has truly succeeded in this area, for now there are eight grand kids and they are all hard workers, they all realize that God was important in Grandpa's life and they know and practice the importance of family. In 1993, he fulfilled his vow to return to the home farm and to his home church. He was so happy here, teaching the grandchildren about his farm, teaching them to drive the tractor, hunt, fish and about the work that was needed on a farm. They all looked forward to the summer vacations when they could spend their time with their hero on the farm. I say that the life of Jim Waugh was a success in that he let God use his life to touch others, he was not his own. His thoughts were always to his family, neighbors and what he could do for them, without a thought of being too busy to care. His presence will still live on in his grandchildren and that they in turn will pass on the values of hard work, love of God and love of family. He may be gone but he is not forgotten. He lives within our hearts. Funeral services were held September 18 at the Norris United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Carpenter Cemetery.

WAUGH, John Wesley
b: Dec 13 1839, Montgomery Co, IN
d: Aug 14 1910, near Maurine, Henry Co, MO
bur:
Carpenter Cemetery, Chilhowee, Johnson Co, MO
John Wesley Waugh, son of Milo and Elizabeth (Kious) Waugh, was born in Montgomery County, Indiana, December 13, 1839, and died at his home in Henry County, Missouri, near Maurine, Sunday, August 14, 1910, after a serious illness of 48 hours duration. His age was therefore 70 years, 8 months, and 1 day. The Waughs were of Scotch extraction and in keeping with that noble race, of a decided religious mind. The families were Methodist, the given name of the deceased being that of the great founder of the Methodist church, John Wesley himself. The family of Mr. Waugh was immediately connected with that of Rev. Beverly Waugh, who was elected a bishop in the Methodist church in 1836 and served with distinction. "Uncle John" as he was familiarly called was well versed in history of Methodism as well as a well posted man in history and much of the best literature. He grew to manhood in his home county, and was married to Miss Mary E. Henderson, July 1860. Immediately after the civil war, in company with his brother-in-law, A.M. Butcher, leaving their families at home, the two men came west to hew their fortune in a then comparatively unsettled country. Forty-four years ago these two men settled in Big Creek Township in northern Henry County, and began the work of making homes for their families. At that time Henry county was in a great measure unsettled, and hard work was encountered by these men in building homes, but the forefathers had the stamina and will power to overcome difficulties that perhaps are lacking to some degree in the people of today, and soon had homes prepared for their families. The subject of this sketch, John Wesley Waugh, was married three times. By his first wife two children were born, William Waugh of Joplin, and Mrs. Mattie Darr of Holden. Six children survive from his second marriage, to Miss Julia A. Hamilton, April 20, 1865, J. Waugh, Edward Waugh, Richard Waugh, Walter Waugh, Mrs. Mary Smith and Mrs. Minnie Adair. All of these except Richard are residents of Henry County, he living in Iowa. All the children are honorable upright citizens, training their families in the Christian faith and devoting themselves to all things moral and high. A third marriage to Mrs. M. E. Shepherd was on September 26, 1888. She remains with the other relatives to mourn his death. In addition to the above two brothers and two sisters were present at the funeral, and one sister, Mrs. Alice Furman of Ill., was unable to be present. It is also a notable fact that there were in attendance at the funeral nearly one hundred immediate relatives. Mr. Waugh was always interested in church work, and up until 20 years ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis and lost the use of his lower limbs, no one was more faithful in attendance. The esteem in which he was held was well illustrated by the number of friends and neighbors attending his funeral which was said to be the biggest in point of attendance in Big Creek Township. Interment was in the Carpenter cemetery four miles north of Norris. Mr. Waugh loved his family perhaps as few men do, and in return, all his children thought that he was one of the greatest men that ever lived. By his industry and hard work he gained a competency. Mr. Waugh superintended the work of his large farm personally driving over it each week, and had great affection for his faithful horse, which always carried him safely on his rounds. In his last hours he thought of the faithful animal, and it will be well taken care of during its lifetime in payment of its services to Uncle John. Great sorrow has been thrown over his neighborhood by his death. He was well loved as a father, neighbor, friend, and his kindly words and deeds will be missed by those with whom he came in contact. He has been a member of the church from his childhood and though deprived of regular attendance for a number of years he has been a supporter of the church and in his last days talked of his communion with God and his hope for the future. A good citizen (the best asset of a community and a nation) has fallen. The funeral sermon was preached at Norris M. E. Church south, Tuesday Aug. 16, 1910, and his body now sleeps in a steel case in the Carpenter cemetery north of Norris, Mo.
