Daily Democrat, Clinton MO, Jan 24 2005 - Carroll R. Wetzel, D.O., 74, Clinton, died Friday, January 21, 2005, at Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton. "Dr. Carroll", as he was affectionately called, was born June 29, 1930, in Kansas City, the son of Gus S. Wetzel Sr. and Beatrice Estelle (Lomax) Wetzel. On December 4, 1982, in Clinton, he married Myrna Beck, who survives of the home. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1948 and went directly to Westminster College, Fulton, to pursue his medical degree and finished up at the Los Angeles College of Osteopathic Medicine, then took his residency at Rocky Mountain Osteopathic Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He began practicing medicine in Clinton in 1959, at the old Wetzel Hospital, where Clinton City Hall is now located and had recently retired in June 2004. In addition to his wife, Dr. Carroll is survived by two sons, C. Rob Wetzel, M.D. and his wife Allison, Clinton, and John Wetzel and his wife Lisa, St. Louis; a daughter, Patricia Wetzel Schaaf and her husband Kendall, Leawood, Kansas; a stepson, William A. Kemper and his wife Susan, Clinton; a stepdaughter, Lorna Kemper Koehnlein and her husband Donald, Mesa Arizona; 11 grandchildren, Andrew, Nathan, Samuel, Christopher Casey, Kathryn Janie, Camille Nicole, Camryn Beck, Samantha Ray, Roger Owen and Zachary Allen; a brother, Gus S. He served on the Board of Healing Arts and the boards for the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians (MAOPs), the Citizens Union State Bank, the Intermed Insurance Company and the Kirksville School of Osteopathic Medicine. He leaves behind his dear wife, family, friends and valued patients. He will be remembered for many things including his dry wit, voracious appetite, enthusiasm for driving, his rose garden and his gift for woodworking. He also loved traveling, but enjoyed returning home even more. Dr. Carroll also leaves behind a legacy where he was blessed to work with his father, brother and son in a career that was his passion. He treasured the many people who touched his life through the Golden Valley Hospital and Wetzel Clinic. He was a gifted surgeon who at retirement was overheard telling a patient, "You don't know how much I will miss you." And he meant it. One never had to guess where they stood with him and he approached life's ups and downs with faith, hope and perseverance. He was tough, yet tenderhearted. A key to his success was finding joy in common day-today rituals and obligations. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 25, at the Clinton United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton.
