MILES - PAXTON - GOSSETT - LYTLE - GILMAN posted 7/15/2005 Laura Anderson kalkowski@mindspring.com Stephen MILES and wife Nancy "Nannie" Ann PAXTON arrived in Henry County around 1880, give or take a couple years. They lived there until their deaths in the 1920s. One of their daughters, Clara F. Finks Pearson, also stayed in Henry county, until her death in the 1970s. I think the rest of the MILES children went elsewhere, to Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. Nanny (Nancy) MILES, daughter of Stephen MILES and Nannie PAXTON, was born about 1874 or '75 in (I think) Cass Co., MO, and was raised in Henry county. She married William Nalley GOSSETT on 21 June 1893 at Lewis Station, Henry Co., MO. William and Nanny GOSSETT had three children - Beulah, Florence and Della Gossett - in (or near) Lewis Station, and then Nanny died in 1900. William remarried, to Margaret "Maggie" LYTLE, on 19 Feb 1902 at Huntingdale (in or near Lewis Station). Margaret LYTLE was the daughter of Spencer LYTLE and wife Harriett LOWRY or LURIE or LURA or some other spelling. Marrgaret LYTLE was born 1873 in Sedalia, Pettis county MO. Her children with WIlliam Nalley GOSSETT were Leland, Owen, Nellie Alice, Wilbur, Ella and Ralph. Sometime around Dec 1911, the GOSSETT family moved to Manderson, Big Horn county, Wyoming. The children mentioned, Nellie Alice died 8 Sep 1909 and Wilbur GOSSETT died 26 Mar 1911, but I haven't been able to find them in the Henry county cemeteries. I also cannot find them in the family plot in Wyoming. I still think they died in Missouri, though. (W. N. Gossett's Public Sale at the Spencer Lytle farm was dated Wed., Nov. 1, 1911. The farm was 5 miles west of Calhoun, MO, 2-1/2 mi. N of Lewis Station, 10 mi NE of Clinton.) I have done a bit of research on the MILES family, the GOSSETTs and the LYTLEs. Harriett LOWRY's mother was Martha PAXTON, a sister to Nannie PAXTON who married Stephen MILES. Buelah GOSSETT married H. H. GILMAN and my contacts in the GOSSETT family seem to think that Beulah and her husband stayed in Lewis Station. I have found nothing about them so far. If anyone is interested in these families, please contact me. I would still like to know more about the families' time in Henry County. I found Stephen Miles' homestead in the very north part of Deer Creek twp, north of Lewis Station, and I think the Gossetts and Lytles were in Tebo twp. I would love to know if they are mentioned in those Henry County History books, but I haven't been able to find one yet. They would be in the books covering 1885-1900 and 1901-1911. I wonder also if there are any remnants of the old farms left. Pictures would be great! I'd be happy to share any of my data if anyone is interested!

FOSTER posted 5/7/2005 Victoria Sills southronlady@4state.com I have been trying to find the family of my ggrandfather, John P. FOSTER, who was born, March 3, 1846, in MO. We have always thought that he was born in Benton Co., MO, in Warsaw, but I have exhausted all of the census records from that county, with no John FOSTER listed in any of the census that would match his age, or even be close. I found a John FOSTER, matching the age of my ggrandfather, who was in Henry Co. in 1850, living with his mother Franky, and brother William FOSTER. I also have found the same family in 1860 with mother being listed as Frances FOSTER. I know that my ggrandfather's mother was born in VA., and his father in TN. The Frances (Franky) listed in the 1850 and 1860 Henry Co. census was born in VA. However, no father is listed on either of these census records from Henry Co. My ggrandfather, John P. FOSTER, named his first daughter Frances. Also, he had a son named William. This is the first shred of hope I have found in all the years that I have been searching. If anyone knows anything about this family, I would surely love to hear from you.

COTRILL - COTTRILL - COBILL posted 2/20/2005 Jim Yell ethanyell@hotmail.com I am looking for validation that the Henry county 1870 census transcription is correct in naming Watson and Mary J. COTRILL, instead of the apparent COBILL that is written on the actual census page? I can't say if Watson COTTRILL is related to the Elias and Oliver that are also listed in Osage township, but I wonder if this Elias is the one buried in Confederate cemetery. As the birthplace and ages are correct for this Watson and Mary J. COTRILL to be the one I search it would attach this pair to the family in Chariton county 1860s on and explain where they were in 1870. I have found recently that this Chariton county Watson served with Holtzclaw Guerrillas in Civil War.

DAILEY - MOONEY - DAVIDSON posted 2/20/2005 Fern Poe Davidson enola1850@cebridge.net According to the 1910 Federal Census record of Henry county, MO there was a John DAILEY - age 55 years old and born in Virginia. He was a forman at a coal mine. His wife was Margaret - age 44 and born in Illinois. Children (taken from an earlier census) were Mary - born 1882; Jennie - born 1883; Bessie - born 1885; John - born 1888; Victor - born 1894. On the 1910 census record, Victor was the only child still living in this household. Also listed in this family was John's mother-in-law Janet MOONEY - age 80 and born in Scotland (believe she was actually born in Nova Scotia) but parents were from Scotland. Janet was also listed as Jennet or Jeanette, her maiden name was DAVIDSON. Am very interested in hearing from anyone that might have any information on this family.

BELT - WESTFALL posted 1/21/2005 Lyndon Irwin lirwin@prodigy.net This is in response to 2001 query on the Henry County list for the BELT and WESTFALL surnames. The email address on that query is now a dead link. Hopefully, the person who posted it will find this. I found an 1884 article in Vernon County, MO that tells of the death of a Mrs. BELT in the house fire of the home of her daughter and son, Mr. and Mrs. WESTFALL. The family had moved to Vernon County in the spring of 1884. The story is: On December 20, 1884, J. M. Meyerscame to Nevada to send a telegraph. It was brief and sent on behalf of Mrs. George WESTFALL and was sent to Walter A. BELT, of Montrose, MO. The telegraph simply read: "Our house is burned and mother perished in the flames." I'm interested in knowing more about this BELT family and also know if Mrs. BELT was related to Marcus BELT, Confederate soldier and acquaintance of Henry County's Warren C. BRONAUGH.
