Holt County, MO Biography
Henry SHUTTS, editor of the Holt County Press (see Wm. KAUCHER
biography), and mayor of Oregon was born in Columbia Co., N. Y.
on Dec. 29, 1843. The family moved to Ill. in Sept., 1855. Mr.
SHUTTS received an academic education and lived at Joliet, Ill.
until coming to Mo. in May, 1864. He resided at Forest City, Holt
Co. about one year and taught school there. He moved to Oregon
in 1865 and began to study law with Daniel ZOOK. He was admitted
to the bar in 1866 and practiced in Oregon until 1873. He then
moved to De Soto, Johnson Co., Kansas where, for a short time,
he practiced law and taught. He returned to his law practice in
Oregon in 1873. In Aug., 1876 he purchased the Missouri Valley
Times newspaper and began the publication of the Holt County Press.
He was elected mayor of Oregon in 1875 and re-elected in 1876.
In the campaign of 1876, he was the Democratic candidate for representative
in the state legislature from Holt Co., but was defeated, the
county being largely Republican. On May 6, 1868 he married Tillie
COLLINS, the daughter of S. C. COLLINS, one of the old residents
of Holt Co.
