Holt County, MO Biography

M. M. SMITH, formerly sheriff and collector of Holt Co. presently operates a large mercantile business at Mound City. He is a native of Montgomery Co., Ohio. His father was Samuel SMITH and his mother's maiden name was Mary WILSON. His parents were residents of Penn. before moving to Ohio. M. M. SMITH was born July 31, 1841, lived in Ohio until 1855, then moved with his father to Rockville, Park Co., Indiana, where he received his education in the common schools of the area. He came to Holt Co., Mo. in 1860, but returned to Indiana the next year. During the Civil War, he served about 1 year in the 31st Indiana Infantry. He was discharged due to disability in 1862 and returned to Holt Co. From 1862 to 1865 he clerked in a store in Mound City and there learned the mercantile business. In 1865 he went back to Rockville, Ind. and was employed in a store for about three years. He returned to Holt Co. in fall, 1868 and worked for James L. ALLEN in his store at Oregon. In 1869 he bought the store from Mr. ALLEN. He sold the store in 1870 so he could stand for election to position of sheriff and collector. After election, he held these offices for two years and, after the positions were separated, held the office of collector until 1874. In 1876, in partnership with M. S. NORMAN, he opened a large and thriving store in Mound City under the firm name of "SMITH & NORMAN." The store has a full assortment of goods of all kinds. In Sept. 1873, Mr. SMITH married Miss Fannie HART of Petersburg, Ind. He has always been a Republican.
