Howard County, Missouri Marriage Abstracts Book 4 (White) 1860-1881 abstracted by Carolyn Gibbons. The book is softbound, 134 pages including one page introduction and 4 pages of listing of officials. There are 2,230 marriage entries, including a few duplicates where the name was spelled two different ways on the record (and a couple where it was spelled wrong which I knew from personal and census sources). I entered those under both names. There is an alphabetical listing by groom, followed by an alphabetical listing by bride. $25.00 postpaid. The Best Bustle in Fayette, Sylvia Forbes and Mary Louise Forbes. $3.50 plus shipping. In the late 1880's Fayette had a "bustling" Bustle company, which was the biggest manufacturing company in the area up to that time. This booklet traces the rise and fall of the company, and is documented with footnotes. History of Central Methodist College, Frank Tucker. $10.00 plus shipping. Central Methodist College, in Fayette, Missouri, has its roots from the nineteenth century, and has played an important role in the history of Fayette ever since. Many Fayette citizens attended school there, where it shaped their ideas on morals, religion, and business; and many also taught there. This book covers 110 years of the college. LOCAL FAMILY HISTORY

The Birch Family History, Descendant of Rev. Jonathan Birch, Vicar of Bakewell, Derbyshire, England, by Bernerd L. O'Neil. This book traces the BIRCH family from 1695 to the present day and lists over 4100 persons. A large part of the book includes the children of Rev. Thomas Erskine BIRCH and his three sons; Thomas E, BIRCH 2nd, Weston Favel BIRCH and Judge James Hervey BIRCH who came to Howard Co. Missouri in the 1840's. A Country Boy at Heart, Mary Louise Forbes. $3.50 plus shipping. A story of an orphan boy, Kenneth Earl, who was adopted by a farm family who lived in the rural area around Fayette. He became a farmer and got so good training and using draft horses that he started winning draft horse pull contests locally. He won ribbons for many years with his teams. A County Girl at Heart, Mary Louise Forbes. $3.50 plus shipping. A story of Kenneth Earl's wife, Mabel, who also was an orphan. She grew up on a farm outside Fayette and became a farm wife. It contains pictures, stories and family trees collected from many connecting families which include the names: COSTLEY, COUTTS, DENNY, GOSE, INNES, SIMPSON and more. Jere Kingsbury, by descendant Warren T. Kingsbury. (Call for current pricing.) This book is about one of the first settlers to Howard County. Our Million Ancestors, by Dorthy Million Ketter, published 1996, $40 postpaid, hardcover, 326 pages, traces the ancestors and descendents of William Million, who is on the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census of Howard and Boone counties. Now There is One, Mary McCutcheon, 1993, $10 plus shipping (approx. 100 pages with numerous illustrations). This book is about six old homes in Howard County, Missouri, located in the vicinity of Highway 5, between Fayette and New Franklin. This book discusses the two-story brick mansions of Nicholas Selmon Burckhartt, William H. Long, John Kingsbury, Lemuel Leonard Kingsbury, Thomas Carr Boggs, and James Robert Estill, all prominent citizens of their time. Only the Estill home is still standing, and is on the National Register of Historic Homes. The book discusses the homes and families, their accomplishments, and life in these earlier times, when Howard County was first being settled. It contains footnotes and bibliography. LAND PATENTS & MAPS

Howard County Missouri Original Land Purchases 1819-1858, by Cecy Rice. The book contains hand drawn plats of Howard county, with a full name index. These are the land patents from the U.S. government to individuals, the first time the land was sold so they do not appear in deed books, as it is a patent and not a deed.
