Eleven Point River

The Eleven Point River is considered by many to be the most pristine river in the Ozarks. A portion of the Eleven Point River is one of the original eight rivers chosen to be part of the National Wild and Scenic Riverways System. Today, over twenty five years later, only a quarter of 1% of the nation's river miles are protected as National Wild and Scenic Rivers.

This beautiful river, located on the eastern edge of the Ozark Mountains, originates in Missouri and is fed by many large springs on its journey to the Spring River in Arkansas. Greer Spring, the second largest in Missouri, adds on average over 200 million gallons of water per day to the river. The erosion of the dolomitic rock that created the many caves and springs in the area also makes this region particularly vulnerable to man's activities.

    Howell County Courthouse

Howell County organized in 1857. In 1866 all county records were lost in a fire. The first court met in a log cabin east of West Plains. The first courthouse was built of wood, on the square in West Plains in 1859; it was damaged during the Civil War in 1862, and in 1863 guerrillas burned the town of West Plains. A second courthouse was built in 1869.

In November 1882 work was begun on a third courthouse. Cornerstone ceremonies took place on July 4, 1883; the court accepted the completed building January 14, 1884. An explosion in the West Plains Halstead block caused extensive damage April 19, 1928, and the building was condemned and abandoned before being razed in 1933.

In June 1935 county officials considered accepting the government's offer for help in constructing a new courthouse. On October 12, 1935, the current courthouse was commissioned to be built.
