DEATH OF HON. T.E. NOELL. - We have to record the death of the Representative of the Third congressional district of Missouri, Hon. Thomas E. NOELL. He expired in this city a few minutes before one o'clock yesterday morning, in only the twenty-ninth year of his age. The public has already been apprised of his dangerous illness, and is therefore in some measure prepared for the sad announcement. Thou distant from his home, he was attended in his last days by his mother and a circle of devoted friends. Mr. NOELL was a native of south-east Missouri, where he early won admission to the bar, giving promise of great success in his profession. But his legal pursuits were interrupted by the war, and among the earliest of our Missouri volunteers he hastened to the defense of the Republic. In the first organization of Missouri six months volunteers he served as major, and then accepted the commission of captain in the regular army. Upon the death of his father, the Hon John W. NOELL ---- ---- ----tive of the Third district in the thirty-eighth congress of whom loyal Missouri will ever be proud--young NOELL returned, on leave of absence, to Missouri, and received a hearty welcome from the patriots of the Southeast. In 1854 he revisited Missouri on recruiting service, and was honored with a nomination and election to Congress by a constituency who were then, musket in hand defending their homes from raiding rebels. Young in years, and inexperienced in political life, at a time when novel and complex problems of the gravest moment were forced upon Congress, it is not strange that he failed to fulfill the sanguine hopes of his Radical friends; yet his personal qualities of ingenuousness and sincere patriotism were such as to secure his re-election in 1866. The character of Mr. NOELL was unmarred by vicious habit. His associations were pure, his tastes those of the true gentleman, and his social qualities such as to attach strongly to him a host of personal friends, though many of them felt compelled to oppose him in political contests. This warm attachment of friends was manifested during his last sickness by the anxious care with which they watched day and night at his bedside, and endeavored to alleviate his sufferings. He died in the faith of the Catholic church, and the Sisters of Charity also rendered to him every attention that benevolence of piety could suggest. The remains were attended to the steamer by some of the most respected citizens of the State and of St. Louis, including Governor FLETCHER and lady, G.R. TAYLOR, J.W. NOBLE, United States District Attorney, C.M. ELLEAR(?), ---- DREYER, Erastus WELLS, and many others ---- Missouri Democrat. |
