FRANCES LOUISE PENDLETON Frances Louise Pendleton, 99, Warrensburg, Missouri, passed away Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at Warrensburg Manor Care Center. She was born March 19, 1901 near Holden, Missouri, the daughter of Harry Anthony and Clara Eleanor (Bluhm) Nawgel. On Christmas Day, 1919 she married Charles Henry Pendleton in Holden. He preceded her in death September 27, 1962. Mrs. Pendleton lived all of her life near Holden until ill health dictated her move to Warrensburg in 1992. She descended from two prominent families. Grandfather Nawgel descended from a Revolutionary War soldier; and grandfather Bluhm, born in Minden, Germany, came to Holden soon after the Civil War, and was instrumental in the organization of both the Farmers & Commercial Bank and the Bank of Holden. Mrs. Pendleton was a member of the Holden Presbyterian Church. Her horses, cattle, chickens and garden attested to her great love for nature. Mrs. Pendleton had no children, but she was a beloved aunt to nieces and nephews, Mildren, Leroy, Isobel, Edison, and Eleanor Kohler. Eleanor Tuepker of Holden is a cousin. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Reverend Henry Gower will officiate. Pallbearers will be Lenes Kohler, Winston Lambeth, Stephen Kohler, Larry Brunner, Mike Hanna, and Neil Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Cast, Joe Hanna, Wayne Carter, Bob Mickey, Jack Wharton, and Tom Williams. Interment will be at Holden Cemetery. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Holden Presbyterian Church. RALPH DONALD HARTER, JR. Ralph Donald Harter, Jr. 74, Holden, Missouri, passed away Monday, October 9, 2000, at home. He was born July 31, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Ralph D., Sr. and Bertie (Paul) Harter. On March 6, 1949 he married Bonnie J. Prue in Mission, Kansas. Mr. Harter was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He flew with the 35th squadron of teh 39th fighter group for 18 months. After the war he became a pilot for Trans World Airlines, where he worked for 32 years retiring December 18, 1983. Mr. Harter lived in Raytown, Missouri for many years and moved to Holden in 1975. He was a member of the Missouri Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Aircraft Owner Pilots Association, and the P 51 Association. Surviving his passing are wife, Bonnie J. Harter, of the home; one son, Michael K. Harter, Lee's Summit, MO; four daughers, Joyce L. Baker, Lake Ozark, MO, Sherry L. Wolzak, Independence, Gail L. Bowles, Kansas City, MO, and Linda L. McCool, Kansas City, MO; one brother, G.A. Harter, Decatur, IL; two sisters, Jeanette Reichard and Thelma Fanella, Chicago, IL; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12, 2000 at 7 p.m. at Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Father Ernie Gauthier will officiate. Cremation. RICHARD EDWARD LANIER Richard Edward LaNier, 77, Kingsville, Missouri, passed away Monday, October 9, 2000 at home. He was born June 20, 1923 in DeSoto, Kansas, the son of Lester E. and Ethel (Beard) LaNier. On May 20, 1945 he married Marjorie Anna Fletcher in Ottawa, KS. Mr. Lanier was a trade welder several years at Ottawa Steel Company, Ottawa, KS and then for 13 years at General Motors Corporation in Kansas City. He retired in 1988. He lived in Ottawa, Kansas, Kansas City, and Blue Springs before moving to Kingsville 13 years ago. He was a member of the Enon Baptist Church at Pittsville, Missouri, and of Local 93, United Auto Workers Union. Surviving his passing are wife, Marjorie Lanier, of the home; two sons, William Edward LaNier, state of Texas, and Michael W. LaNier, Blue Springs; three daughters, Shirley A. Brown, Ottawa, KS, Vivian Neilson, Dadeville, Alabama, and Peggy Fogarty, Holden; two brothers, Leonard Robbins, Yates Center, KS, and Wayne E. Hill, state of Colorado; two sisters, Dorothy Winters and Dalene Spaulding, both of Pamona, KS; nine grandchildren and several step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Atcheson and Opal Blow; and by one brother, Clifford LaNier. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12, 2000 at 2:30 pm at Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Brother Dwight Decker and Brother Bruce Snyder will officiated. Thornton, Sr., 82, of Holden, Missouri, passed away October 3, 2000 at his home from lung cancer. Mr. Thornton was born October 7, 1917, in Edler, Colorado. He was the youngest of eight children, born to Robert Lee and Rebecca Jane Thornton. Mr. Thornton served honorably in the U.S. Army in WWII. He was awarded the purple heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany. Mr. Thornton was employed for 36 years by United Metal Spinning Co. and retired in 1983. Mr. Thornton was an avid outdoorsmen for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a skilled craft maker and was always busy. He was always ready with a helping hand to anyone. Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anita Thornton, of the home. Also surviving are his sister, Adelle Neal, Springfield, Colorado; three sons, Joseph S. Thornton, Jr. and wife, Mimi, Ocala, Florida, Stephen Thornton and wife, Shirley, Sugar Creek, Missouri, and Michael Thornton and wife, Rhonda, Holden; his nieces, Joan Nichols, Garden City, KS, and Linda Naab, Ingels, KS; 11 grandchildren, Ian, Andrew, Steven, Mark, Gina, Sherry, Joshua, Lucas, Lynnellen, Alan, and Alexa. He also had 11 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Thornton requested no sevices. Memorial may be made to Hospice of Johnson County, Missouri. ORBIE WOODROW FARNSWORTH Orbie Woodrow Farnsworth, son of Samuel Allen and Birtie Rockhill Hixon Farnsworth, was born March 7, 1913, at Quick City, Missouri. He passed away Thursday evening, October 5, 2000 at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center in Pleasant Hill. He turned 87 last March. Orbie graduated from Holden High School. He was united in marriage with Miss Virginia Rector on September 8, 1937. They were married at Warrensburg, Missouri. To this union two sons were born, Orbie Gale in 1942 and Gary William in 1943. Also a part of this family is Virginia's cousin, Helen Marie Bonenberger who came to live with them at the age of 10 and Orbie's brother Paul, who came to live with them at the age of 14. These four and their families were a great blessing to Orbie and Virginia. Virginia passed away last July 30. Orbie worked at the Bendix plant in Kansas City for over 23 years prior to retiring in the late 1970s. He also farmed and hauled livestock and grain for others in additions to driving the Cass County library van. Orbie and Virginia lived on their farm near Blairstown prior to moving to a farm west of Pleasant Hill in 1954. They moved into town 16 years ago. Orbie was a deacon and member of the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church. He was active in the tape ministry of the church and enjoyed delivering audio tapes of each Sunday's worship service to shut-ins and those in nursing facilities. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Farnsworth who passed away in 1967. He leaves sons, Orbie Gale and wife, Mary, Sahurita, Arizona; and their daughter Denise; Gary William and wife Linda, Pleasant Hill, and their daughters, Beverly Conant and husband, Norm and Nancy Burris and husband, Todd, all of Pleasant Hill; Helen Marie Bonenberger and her late husband, Charles, Green Valley, AZ, and their daughter, Myra Phillips and husband Russell, Houston, TX, son, Bob Bonenberger and wife Linda, near Denver, CO; Paul Allen Farnsworth and wife Shirley, Pleasant Hill, and sons, Mark and wife Jane, Ft. Myers, FL, Keith and wife Cheryl, Moravia, NY, Scott, Lehigh Acres, FL. He also leaves 12 great grandchildren. In addition to Paul, he leaves two other brothers, Fern Farnsworth, Independence, Missouri and Gilbert Farnsworth, Tatamy, PA; three sisters, Sylvia Jordan, Parkville, Madge Bohannon, Citrus Heights, CA, and Wanda Wiskur, Hughesville, MO; other relatives and many, many friends and a large church family. All will have fond memories of the times they were able to spend with him. Funeral services were held Monday, October 9, 2000 at the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church, under the direction of the Stanley and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. Wyatt Shanks officiating. Burial was at Farnsworth Cemetery, Holden. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Farnsworth Cemetery Association. Pallbearers were Mark Farnsworth, Don Ward, Keith Farnsworth, Norm Conant, Todd Burris, and Harold Dean Jordan.
